Mike Shanahan not sure who will start at RB

By Washington Post editors

Redskins coach Mike Shanahan said Monday he is unsure who will start at running back in the next game against the New York Giants, adding that he won't know until Wednesday whether Ryan Torain's hamstring injury has healed enough for him to play.

"We'll get a better feel for that on Wednesday," Shanahan said about the unsettled situation at running back. "Until they actually go full-speed, it's too early to tell" whether Torain can be ready.

With first-string tailback Clinton Portis out for the year and Torain sidelined for a third consecutive game, the Redskins gained just 29 yards on 13 rushing attempts in their 17-13 loss to the Minnesota Vikings Sunday. That total is tied for the team's second-worst since 1994.

Starting running back Keiland Williams had just five yards on three carries, and his backup, James Davis, had 11 yards on six rushes in his first game for the Redskins.

Shanahan said the small number of rushing attempts was due primarily to the fact that the Redskins fell behind 17-7 and ran just 21 plays in the second half. "When you only have [21] plays in the second half, good things aren't going to happen," he said.

Shanahan said Davis ran more plays in part because the team was evaluating him.

"I like both guys," he said of Williams and Davis. "I've seen some good things in practice...I've got confidence in both guys."

Shanahan said Portis will have surgery Tuesday to repair a torn abdominal muscle and will need "a couple of months" recuperation.

Addressing the penalty incurred by linebacker Perry Riley for blocking in the back, which nullified a go-ahead punt return touchdown by Brandon Banks, Shanahan said that the mistake was made a young player going full speed on special teams.

"I was really pleased with his effort," Shanahan said after viewing tape of special teams play for 45 minutes. "His mistake was full speed. That's part of the NFL. That's part of the growing experience."

I say draft pick in rnd5 is RB....

Portis is done unless he signs super cheap

Got to get at least 5 guys between both lines via draft or FA. The more the merrier but 5 younger more talented players are a must

Agreed. The interior is the weak link of the OL and our DL is complete garbage. Problem is that we need another OLB to pair with Orakpo and an ILB as well. Hopefully we can trade our top 12 pick and get a couple 2nds to speed up the process. Without a complete upgrade to both units we have no chance at a winning record.

The next year they can go after the luxury picks of a WR/RB/QB and continue to add depth to the OL & DL.

Um that was the problem 13 rushing attempts and Casey Rabach and Artis Hicks should've went with the backups on the O-line. I kept saying during the game and most of the year Little Shanny is too pass happy defenses just T-off because they know this and the O-line is left standing there as if they had no idea it was a pass play...

Oh ya, I def think riley is a solid replacement for rockymac

I think hb blades could be a fletcher clone, although we've heard that for yrs, I wanna see what he can do

I go off of what I see, and what I saw was this:

Montgomery looked real good at center, while Heyer looked good at right guard.

These guys are still very young.

Barnes has not had the chance to play that much, but I'm hoping he can be good.

I like the homegrown talent.

So yes, I think we have a few "problem solved" guys on the squad.

We are yet to see Cook or Capers play, and I believe Capers was a projected top 5 tackle last year.

You got amazing vision. Because when I saw Monty play, he didn't remind me of Jeff Bostic. And Heyer didn't remind me of Mark Schlereth.

Barnes doesn't even remind me of Martin Mayhew.

Maybe if we have a team full of players like the Steelers or the 'Pats we can fill gaps on our O-Line with a top-tier C or G. That said, get back to me on that in 2015 Norman Einstein.

If there ever is a reality show that features flame wars between interweb boards, I think we've got it won.

I'll put sanctimonious a$$hats like Fowl up against the web's finest any day. Keep it up, Fowl, we may need you someday.

In the meantime you've a great boost whenever I feel my own cynicism level dropping.

"Mike Shanahan not sure who will start at RB"

Who cares who starts at RB. It doesn't matter with this OL.

These dopes are asking the wrong questions. They need to ask why this OL is such a failure with 4 new starters and if MS's version of zone blocking and "lighter more athletic" OL personnel can work in the NFC East.

Deisel.

Great point. I think we need ro replace 3 starters on o line and 3 more on d line.

Our starters give us good depth in year two.

We get a free agent WR playmaker, Vjax is a big target

Find a young big bowlingball body for NT/DE, think haynesworth with heart

Let rocky walk for a compensatory pick

Draft 5th rnd WR/RB think jacoby ford, dex mccluster playmaker

Add another cb/fs to replace b!t*channon

One more doosh nozzle with nothing substantial to offer.

Even though, that was a half-assed effort to offer me praise.

I can't help but think of that retarded kid from that show no one watched about 15 years ago when ever I see your name.

here's a question for all.

You can sign any of the current Redskins to a 5 year contract -- at market rates. Which guys do you sign?

My answer:
Orakpo, Lo (always room for a verstile guy), Rocky Mc, DHall, LL30 (though I'm not sure he'll be good value), Cooley, TW and Jammal Brown (watched him more these past couple games, and he seems to be doing well).

On the fringe are Armstrong, Banks and Doughty, but 5 years is more than I'd commit to for these 3.

That is just 8 guys -- and I'm not sure people will agree with me on Rocky or Brown and Lorenzo Alexander is more about versatility than about his play at OLB.

The Redskins should look to unload any player not a rookie and everyone not selected to the Pro Bowl within the past two years.....Total rebuild is due..

Who starts at RB???? ALBERT CHODESWORTH.... Let's get our money out of that diseased ridden piece of rat filth while we still can. He probably will run for 298 yards and 4 touchdowns. But then again hes a fat hurtin chode..Redskins running game....SOFT!...that is all.

I think Portis' return is up to Portis. If he dedicates himself to training as he did this past offseason AND is willing to take a reduced role (something he seems willing to do) AND (and this is the BIG 'AND') is willing to take a sizable paycut, sure, he could come back. Depends how bad he wants to compete and/or break the Skins' career rushing record.

IMHO, his pass blocking alone is worth the roster spot, but again, he needs to take a cut in pay as a 3rd down, no STeams RB.

*******

I THINK He is not HURT.... I know too many people who know him directly and they told me at the start of this season that he would not play the whole season and would be retiring at the end of the season... He is not injured..... want proof check him out at his party today at the National Harbor! pahahahahaha

Posted by: Ricoblaq | November 28, 2010 11:43 AM

*****

Could be the case RicoSuave - how can I check him out @ that party? Do you have pics? And unless they show him doing the limbo @ that party, they really wouldn't mean squat. I've torn ab muscles before, and there's nothing about that injury that would prevent one from standing erect, or sitting in a chair (the two most common postures one might assume at a party). Now, it WOULD prevent one from dancing w/o pain, especially a limbo-type motion, and I suppose doing the horizontal mambo could pose some problems as well, but sans those pics, I'm gonna need more than your hearsay from the "many people that know him directly" before I buy into the idea that Portis is faking and the Redskins are going along for the ride.

Tell me what happens next - do surgeons, nurses, anesthetists, hospital administrators, etc. all agree to slice open a perfectly healthy Clinton Portis, or does they merely conspire to all lie about it to the press? Either way, this conspiracy by necessity involves the Redskins, the NFL, Clinton Portis and the medical and insurance community. Riiiiiiiiight....

Btw, please give Jimmy Hoffa, Tupak and the space men @ Area 51 my best.

Don't know if anyone has said it yet but we could really use Ladell Betts

This is old news. Shanahan never says who is starting until game day. Why give the opponent time to prep for a back they no nothing about?

Shanny you are killing me! for sake of the football gods pick an RB. I'm trying to field a fantasy team here
