Mike Shanahan hopes Josh McDaniels bounces back

By Barry Svrluga

Redskins Coach Mike Shanahan obviously has enough on his hands in Ashburn that he can't afford to worry about what's going on in other NFL cities. But Shanahan took note of one move this week: The Broncos' dismissal of Josh McDaniels, who replaced Shanahan as Denver's head coach following the 2008 season.

"No. 1, it's always tough to get fired, you know?" Shanahan said. "...Josh lasted a lot longer than I did on my first job when I was with the Raiders. So I commend him for beating me.

"Hopefully, his career turns out like mine did. Sometimes, that first job's not right. I know Josh is a sharp guy, and hopefully he bounces back and gets his opportunity and takes advantage of it."

After coaching the then-Los Angeles Raiders to a 7-9 record in 1988, Shanahan was fired by Raiders owner Al Davis after a 1-3 start in 1989. (McDaniels was 8-8 last year after a 6-0 start, and 3-9 when he was fired this season.) Shanahan's 14-year run with the Broncos, from 1995-08, ended after he went 8-8 in his final year. He finished with a career record of 138-86 with the Broncos, and still has deep ties to Denver.

"This is a tough business," Shanahan said. "You're going to have your ups and downs, you just fight through those downs, and try to put the best organization you can together, and keep on fighting to get on top."

now for the IMPORTANT stuff: RI Insider Fantasy Football -- the regular season finale results!! Who's in, who's out? You're dying to know!! So here goes.

In the Peeps league, every week 13 game had playoff implications and the 4 way log jam at the top sorted out as 2 teams won and grabbed the BYEs.

The Futaleufu Swimmers (9-4) posted a 104-75 win over the Jackalopes (6-7) to grab the top seed. Sidney Rice and Arian Foster led Futa with 23 and 22, while Greg Jennings led the Jackalopes with 26. Still the Jackalopes managed to grab the final playoff slot with a tie breaker win over 35332's Zombie Hord. The tiebreaker, total points scored in the year, was ridiculously close, 1089-1085 in favor of the Jackalopes (gasp!).

Second seed went to Future Winners (9-4), once again led by Aaron Rodgers' with 24, in a 104-44 win over Fins East Skins (5-8). A series of rational decisions all came out wrong for Fins -- he had 3 guys combine for 77 points -- on his bench!!

In a quirky outcome, the 3rd seed went to South Hill Skulls (6-6-1), with a 120-88 win over the Zombie Hord. Skulls 'win and in' scenario was helped by Reggie Wayne's 30 and Chris Ivory's 26. Hord may be wondering why they benched Brees for Cassel, as the extra points from Brees would have been enough to win the tiebreaker for the last playoff spot.

The 4 and 5 seeds both finished at 8-5, with losses to teams that didn't make the playoffs. Sunday's Winner lost to Omaha Steers (5-8), 65-58. Despite a strong lineup, Sunday only had 2 slots hit double figures while Donald Driver's 14 led Omaha. Forever 4-12 (5-8) finished strong with a 103-68 win over He Nate Me. 4-12 had 6 players hit double figures, led by 28 from vick. Nate had 15 each from Peyton Manning and Jonathan Stewart.

Noone Tampa (5-7-1) lost his bid to claim a playoff spot with a 104-80 loss to Boston East Coast Shaft (5-8). Shaft had 6 slots score in double digits, led by Marshawn Lynch's 27. Moreno led Tamp with 18.

In the final standings, every team won at least 5 games. The top two scoring teams, Futa (96ppg) and Future (93ppg), were also 1, 2 in the standings. 4-12 had the dubious distinction of being the most scored upon team, while Future had the league's highest single game score, 122, which happened twice. Skulls and Sunday's Winner also reached the 120 point mark. Future also had the longest win streak, at 8 games.

Playoff matchups this week, #3 South Hill Skulls (6-6-1) takes on the #6 Jackalopes (6-7), while #5 He Nate Me (8-5) plays #4 Sunday's Winner (8-5). The Futa and Future Winners have a BYE.

Over in the RI Hamster league, a complicated playoff picture sorted out.

The top seed and BYE already clinched, the Carroll St F Bombers (11-2), fell to the Geelong Skins (5-8), 81-52. Geelong was led by Boldin's 18 points, while an injury plagued Bomber team was led by McFadden's 16.

The #2 seed and the other BYE was clinched by the Cal Salmon (9-3-1) impressive win over Here and Now Coproliths (4-9), 149-69. Salmon delivered the league's single game best point total with 7 slots in double figures, including 4 with 20 or more, led by Rodgers 28. Copro actually had the games top scorer, Chris ivory with 29, but no one else hit double digits.

The Shanallen Skins (8-4-1) netted the #3 seed, with a modest 76-39 win over E Funk All Stars (5-8). Adrian Peterson had 31 for Shanny.

Dealer grabbed the #4 seed despite AND because of their 128-97 loss to Moss City Santanimals (6-6-1), whose victory put Moss into the #6 playoff spot. Moss had 7 players in double digits, led by Greg Jennings 28. Moss's impressive point total was even more amazing considering he lost 2 players to in-game injuries, who combined for just 1 point. Moss's high point total also helped Dealer grab the #4 seed instead of the #5 seed, as the quirky tie breaker is 'total points against' for the season.

The #5 seed, the RalJohn Realskins, fell to the Trippin' Billies (6-7), 78-72. Jones-Drew led the Billies with 19, Forte had 15 for RalJohn.

Butz for Utz (5-7) was in a 'win and in' scenario, but fell short 74-45, to the Koolaid Kids (3-10). Brady led Koolaid with 27, while Butz struggled, with Dwayne Bowe going from 36 points last week to 0 this week.

RalJohn and Dealer play 1 playoff game this week, while Shanallenskins plays Moss City Santanimals in the other. The F Bombers and Salmon have BYEs.

Among the honors, Shanallenskins (101ppg) led the league in scoring, with the Salmon (98ppg) next. The highest single game point total happened this week, the Salmon delivering 149. Not surprisingly, second belonged to Shanallenskins, with 141. Though no team got to 130 points until week 7, several teams eventually got there, including Butz, Geelong, RalJohn, Bombers and Copro. The Koolaid Kids was the most abused team, having the most points scored against, a staggering 99ppg. The longest win streak belonged to the F Bombers, winners of 9 straight.

Thanks for the reminder of the awful beating He Nate Me endured at the hands of 4-12 last weekend, zeke.

Good luck to everybody in the playoffs, too.

"Hopefully, his career turns out like mine did. Sometimes, that first job's not right. I know Josh is a sharp guy, and hopefully he bounces back and gets his opportunity and takes advantage of it." Shanahan glanced left and right to make sure nobody was around, then continued, "And by take advantage of it, I mean win some Super Bowls and then go work for some idiot owner making an ungodly amount of money."

====================
I would bet there is much more to the McDaniels firing than has been disclosed. McDaniels brings his personal team video director with him from the Pats where they had worked together for many years... Then suddenly and allegedly unsolicited, this videographer hands over a tape of the opposing team's walk-through.

You have to wonder (if you're a Broncos fan) what transpired the days after the videographer's firing that led to McDaniels firing 4 days later? It was already a losing season and Bowlen had just said, prior to the discovery of the SF walk-through tape, that McDaniels was coming back. So, obviously the firing of McDaniels days after the revelation was directly related to the walk-through video.
Cudos to the Denver owner for showing some integrity... Whereas when Belichick was caught and fined, the Pats owner gave Belichick a salary raise which covered the cost of the fine (500k).

Not surprised to see McDaniels get fired, they never should have given him personnel responsibility.

Still, I like some of what he did -- he deserves another chance not to far down the line. What he did with Orton and Brandon Lloyd!! Did anyone think either of these guys were going to be among the best in the NFL this year?

He lost Dumerville (among others) on defense, huge loss. I think he led the NFL in sacks in 2009. Their feature back, Moreno, has been dinged much of this year.

Denver might actually be a sound defensive coach away from contending, given their offense.

Or: Maybe Urban Meyer is headed that way.

Uh...No.

This DEN team is a paper tiger on offense. I think that they have a worse running game than WSH if you can believe it.

The team frankly is in worse shape than we are with the Redskins. The personnel moves made here by McDaniels are worse than Cerrato over a 2 year period.

All the flashy #'s you see in the pass game are very misleading and the team will be gutted by the next administration.

Nowhere near a good team, not even close, and anyone in this market will tell you the same thing.

Dude was destined to fail... what with a name like that and all... Josh McDaniels... makes me think of an overly peaty Irish single-malt.

Then there's Phillip Daniels... who is reportedly some sort of distant cousin to Jasper Newton "Jack" Daniels, scion the world-renowned distillers in Lynchburg, Tennessee.

Of course, the name O'Shanahan doesn't inspire much confidence either... makes me think of some sort of watered down Irish stout.

Gentlemen, last call! Time for a drink!

I've complained on multiple occasions about your training camp diary and about your "press releases." But, I really want to compliment you on the quality of your rejoinders, both to me and others. You "rejoin" with a gentle, wry wit that seems completely disarming. Many of us could do well to imitate your style. It makes me want to heckle you more just to see your graceful responses.

Posted by: beep-beep | December 9, 2010 3:46 PM | Report abuse

Many of McDaniels personnel moves have been Cerrato-esque.

-NoShow Moreno w/ high first round pick
-Drafting Tim Tebow in the first round
-Passing on Orakpo and taking Robert Ayers (who? exactly)
-Trading Hillis to Browns and bringing in Brady Quinn
-trading a 2010 first round pick in order to move up to take Alphonso Smith in the second round of 2009, then trading him away to Detroit one year later for Dan Gronkowski

In his favor, he made the right call on Orton.

But his handling of draft picks makes Vinny Cerratto look like Jimmy Johnson in the hey-day.

scamp,
aren't you happy w/trent williams? i think that was a good use of such a high pick. this year i certainly would like to trade down and stock up, since everyone seems to think it'll be a "stretch" to draft interior linemen as high as we're likely to be drafting.

(btw, i think i recently saw a post about you being an architect from ga tech? me: architect from VA TECH)

Posted by: walter-in-fallschurch | December 9, 2010 11:44 AM |

Indeed I am happy with Trent. He wasn't enough though. We really needed quite a few more high rounders especially since we traded a few of 'em away.
