No cuts made by start of practice

The Redskins won't formally announce their roster cuts until Tuesday afternoon, and the team's practice this morning didn't offer any hints.

Just about every player was present during the portion of practice that's open to the media. Right tackle Jammal Brown was nowhere to be seen, but his spot on the roster should be secure.

A handful of other players were at practice but not wearing pads and not participating, including: Donovan McNabb (ankle), Mike Sellers (knee), Malcolm Kelly (hamstring), Perry Riley (ankle). Phillip Daniels and Maake Kemoeatu also did not appear to be participating.

Running back Clinton Portis was back in pads and appeared to be participating.

The Redskins are expected to announce their cuts later today and then will make further roster cuts on Saturday afternoon, the league's deadline for teams to trim their rosters to 53. So while at least a couple of players will lose their jobs at some point today, 22 more will be handed their walking papers this weekend.

I think the deadline is 4pm, so no shock that nothing's happened yet...

53 men is not enough for a 16 game season, as evidenced by the importance of the practice squad. When (if?) they go to 18 games, they need to address this.

In a game this violent, there's absolutely no reason not to field a prepared and able team.

Enough of the sucky. That is all.

gotta love cuts, mine are larry johnson, devin thomas, malcolm kelly, and terrence austin.

for some reason i see mk12 making this team. i dont know why or how. in two years in the nfl he could not stay healthy. what will change? nothing. i know he was drafted by a snake vinny cerroto. he was also coached by a coach that was way over his head. i also see DT11 getting cut. again i dont know why. but i think with Armstrong we will be ok. that boy has speed and can run roughts very well. he does remind me of deshawn jackson. i hate to sat that as much as i hate them dirty birds. i think we should cut 74Hyaer that kid just sucks.

So according to you our WRs will consist of:

MOSS
Galloway
Armstrong
Banks
??

Don't know about that group. And if we really are counting on Galloway to contribute my GOD we are in for a long season outside of Moss. Dude just doesn't have it anymore. On a much much better offense then ours (Brady and the Pats) they cut him in week 5. Dude couldn't handle playing the slot and dropped more balls then he caught.

D. Thomas will be a keeper, IMO. The others i'm with you.

Galloway may not be breaking any records (except iron-man?), but he's still got actual speed, so he'll stretch a D for the TEs & RBs to get busy. He's a good cog.

I think Banks should make it through on his speed. Armstrong on his pre-season performance. Moss is a given.

How may receiver slots do we carry on the roster?

________

I wouldn't think any of these guys will get cut today. I bet they'll cut at least one or two of our army of DTs/DEs, and maybe an older WR or two (Wade?)

Posted by: wireman65 | August 31, 2010 11:45 AM | Report abuse

I don't think they will do this. They really want to see what they have at WR in this last game before they make a decision on Kelly. Might as well cut some other long shot roster hopefuls before you depart with Kelly.

Such as:

James Dearth (LS)
Shay Hodge (WR)
Anderson Russell (S)
Darrel Young (RB)
Howard Green (NT)

Posted by: oh_boy1 | August 31, 2010 12:31 PM | Report abuse

Howard Green has not looked good at all this preseason. Vonnie Holliday has seen little time with the starters/vets, even in nickel packages.

These guys at 32 and 34 years of age could be roster casualties.

Bobby Wade and Roydell Williams (29) don't appear to be in the team's plans either.

But these guys may make it to Saturday because they need bodies for Thursday night.

The skins will be heavy run, mainly passing to the TEs................

While some of the young WR develop....

Galloway and quite possibly Williams will NOT be on the final 53.

Book it!

Why wouldn't you keep Galloway (besides the age). He performed well in his appearance. He's fast as SJK.

..and you need receivers.

I'm not schilling for the guy, but who's been better besides Moss & Armstrong?

Posted by: DikShuttle | August 31, 2010 12:39 PM | Report abuse

Beantown, when will they be trading Banks to the Pats for Mankins and Moss? My guess is before they cut Santana Moss on Saturday, as they'd like to keep a consistent number of WRs named "Moss" on the roster

Posted by: --swb | August 31, 2010 12:39 PM | Report abuse

I'm not sure about cuts... but

Practice squad:

Terrence Austin
Shay Hodge
Dennis Morris
Selvish Capers

Season ending IR (as I've been saying for weeks now):

MK12

The guy has never been a quick study of the playbook ... even you thought he'd be in game shape by week 4, he'd still need weeks of additional field practice before he'd be able to start ... its not worth holding a spot so he might play by wk 7.

Posted by: mac2j | August 31, 2010 12:44 PM | Report abuse

I doubt the Skins will carry MK's perpetually hurt butt another year on the IR..I'd rather have them bring in Coles or Bryant, but hope that Armstrong, Banks and Austin all make the team..There maybe some more quality sirloin cuts this weekend..

Posted by: frak | August 31, 2010 12:45 PM | Report abuse

What does "forcing Dallas to prep for Grossman" entail? Extra tip drills for the D-backs and fumble recovery drills for the D-Lineman?

Posted by: MColeman51 |

Funny line, but as you undoubtedly know there have been many examples of backup QB's coming in and playing well because a team hasn't prepped for them. Even some sad examples in Redskins lore.

And, of course McNabb is a much bigger threat to bring the ball down and run with it. So the 'pokes--if they expect Grossman--would spend more time on inside rushes, with less emphasis on outside contain.

And face it, just planting the seeds of doubt in the enemy is smart, especially when it can be done by an offhand comment in a press conference. Great coaches, it seems, take every advantage they can, large or small.

Posted by: TheCork | August 31, 2010 12:49 PM | Report abuse

sw, mankins is a holdout, and moss is going into a contract year, so no dice on either guy...I think what I'm hearing from PFT is that they're gonna send the Texans, Dennis Morris's practice cleats for Andre Johnson...you heard it here first...

Soooooooooooooooo glad you ain't coaching the Redskins. Kelly I can see, but Thomas has another game to redeem himself, and Larry Johnson is the only full-game backup for Portis if/when he gets hurt. Austin makes the squad or practice team.

==============================

There isn't a chance in he-l-l that Coles will ever put a Redskins jersey on again. Lombardi himself could rise from the dead and Coles would still say no.

Bryant can't turn on his knee so why would we bring him in?

Finally watched the Jets pre-season game...need to cut the entire Redskins team and start over.

Both teams played poorly, but the Jets starters beat the Redskin starters...what a meaningless win.

Look for a 4-12 season for this pathetic team.

I agree..everyone saying cut Galloway because of his age..but he still has speed and can run by most DBs...couple that speed with his experience and its a no-brainer but to keep him..if he had lost a step or two then i would age is a factor but he said he's faster than before so i don't see a problem with him being 38 or whatever...you can't teach speed...and he has it...

Lendy Holmes needs to make this team. He's a better safety than either 37 Reed D or 48 Horton. Film don't lie!
