Redskins, Chris Meidt part ways

Two years ago at this time, Chris Meidt was an obscure Division III head coach at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minn. When Jim Zorn, then the new coach of the Washington Redskins and a man whom Meidt had met at several coaching clinics, called to offer him an assistant's job in the NFL, Meidt jumped.

"I loved everything about the last two years," Meidt said Tuesday. "We absolutely loved it. I would not trade the last two years for anything."

Meidt, 40, was informed Tuesday morning by new Redskins coach Mike Shanahan that he would not be on the staff. Matt LaFleur, an offensive assistant with the Houston Texans, is expected to be named to the Redskins' staff within the next couple of days. LaFleur's relationship with the incoming offensive coordinator, former Texans' coordinator Kyle Shanahan, meant Meidt understood the decision.

"Kyle has to be comfortable with a person he's worked with, someone he already has a relationship with," Meidt said. "I've been a head coach. I understand the staff dynamics."

Meidt worked closely with quarterback Jason Campbell over the past two years, and he helped devise the intricate play-calling system - which involved a color-coded system on Campbell's wrist - when Zorn lost his play-calling duties in October and was replaced by consultant Sherman Lewis. Meidt felt his interviews with both Shanahans went well - "I think if he was starting a staff from scratch, I'd have a great chance," he said - and he leaves believing Shanahan will recommend him for jobs elsewhere.

"I'm wide open," Meidt said. "We're ready for everything. The Lord led us here, and He'll lead us to the next step. If it's a college coordinator's job, that'd be great. If it's a quarterbacks job in the NFL, I would love it. I know I'm a better coach because of this whole experience."

Former Panther Rinehart arrested in Cedar Falls

CEDAR FALLS - A player for the Washington Redskins was arrested early Monday outside a College Hill tavern.

An officer with University of Northern Iowa police arrested Chad Martin Rinehart, 24, for misdemeanor public intoxication.

According to court records, the UNI officer noticed Rinehart attempting to enter Mojo's Pizza House on West 22nd Street at about 2 a.m.

The officer asked Rinehart for his ID and noticed the odor of alcohol on his breath as they talked, records state. His eyes were bloodshot, and he was swaying, records state.

Rinehart declined a breath test and was taken to the Black Hawk County Jail. He was released a few hours later on a promise to appear in court with an arraignment date set for February.

Under the conditions of his release, Rinehart needs permission of the court to leave the state of Iowa.

Rinehart is a Boone native who lists his current address as Ashburn, Va. He played for the University of Northern Iowa, and the Redskins picked him up in the 2008 NFL draft.

He is listed as 6 feet 5 inches tall, weighing 310 pounds.

Campbell, or no Campbell? I don't care anymore. Shanahan will do what it takes to win and he has already said he cannot win without an offensive line and running game, so he'll start the reconstruction there. Campbell can win in a run first offense. More than half of the QB's in the league can win with a run first offense, so this is not an endorsement of Campbell, but rather an endorsement of Shanahan's system. Now, who will be the offensive line coach???

Chadly- innocent until proven guilty, however, guilty I say of injured and not completely rehabbing (except the right elbow).

Meidt introduced the color coded grr-animal code system for Jason Campbell to understand. The only problem was sometimes JC confused the plays with his jammies and Sherm Lewis' BINGO play calling....

Question:

Mike Nolan is no longer with the broncos and he helped turn that defense into a good 3-4 in one year. The question is do we pick him up as an assitant HC to assist hasslet?

Simply being intoxicated should not be a crime, if they're causing a disturbance because they're intoxicated, charge them with public disturbance! If they're driving, give em a DUI.

alex..thanks for the data.. I would agree campbell and garrard stand out as "best on the worst". JAX does have better OLine talent than Skins.
When GMs consider how poor Campbell's OLine was/is, he may surprise everyone by getting a better RFA offer than Orton even though they have been ranked the other way around on most RFA analysis boards.

Posted by: SkinsneedaGM | January 19, 2010 3:10 PM | Report abuse

Orton is an interesting case once you really look at that data. Of all the guys who were QB's on a 8-8 team the average rating for them was 80.72, Orton was better at a solid 86.8, almost equal to Campbell's 86.4 and both of their ratings are almost identical to the average of a 9-7 team QB (86.38).

So if a player was a team (not that that makes ANY sense) Campbell and Orton as QB's are equal to Baltimore, Houston, Pittsburgh, Atlanta or the Jets as a team.

If that does not blow your mind I don't know what will...

I live in a small seaside town 1 hour north of Boston..
A cable channel was here filming the winner of the new england Chowder contest.. (a restaurant in our town).
It was a big deal for our little town of 200. After the crew and host left... we pulled the tarp off the restaurant's trash cans in the back...which were hiding all the empty CAmpbells New England seafood Chowder cans.
So, save yourself a trip to the restaurant.. Grab a can, add more lobster meat with a little cracked peppah..... and you have a national chowdah winnah... haha..
Btw, Sam Adams goes well with it.. Ipswich Ale is better, though (non pasteurized beer).

You obviously did not get my point. With an excellent FS, LL can play adequate SS, with an average FS, LL is inadequate at best.

SS has to play in coverage at times so maybe he ought to bulk up and play LB, but even then they sometimes have to cover.

A SS that can only play the run is a detriment to the team aspect.
