Redskins plane headed home from Rockies (updated)

(Updated at 1:15 p.m.)

As one coach leaves, the search for another officially commences -- even if it unofficially started months ago. And there appears to be movement.

The airplane of Redskins owner Daniel Snyder left out of Dulles International this morning and landed in Centennial Airport in Englewood, Colo., at approximately 10:45 a.m., according to sites that track flight plans.

The team will not comment before today's news conference, but it's worth pointing out that Mike Shanahan lives in the Denver area. We'll keep following the plane and let you know of any developments. It would seem that Snyder's plane would have to leave Denver at some point, right?

And that plane now is back in the air. It was headed east over Kansas, as of 1 p.m. General manager Bruce Allen wouldn't offer a time line for the naming of a new coach, but he said the Redskins would be aggressive. Depending on the passenger list of that flight, will we learn later today just how aggressive?

McShay's top five mock draft per ESPN sportscenter:

1- Rams - DT Suh (Nebraska)
2- Lions - DT Gerald McCoy (Oklahoma)
3- Bucs - S Berry (Tennessee)
4- Redskins - QB Bradford (Oklahoma)
5- Chiefs - OT Davis (Rutgers)

Interesting that he has Davis ahead of Okung... and that he doesn't think the Redskins will take a lineman.

No further interviews needed for 'Skins to hire Shanahan

Posted by Mike Florio on January 4, 2010 12:14 PM ET
It's an issue that has ping-ponged for more than two weeks. And, finally, we think we have a definitive answer.

The Redskins may hire Mike Shanahan to be the team's next coach without conducting any any further interviews.

NFL spokesman Greg Aiello told us via e-mail this morning that "teams can interview during the season members of their own staff or coaches not working for NFL teams as prospective head coaches" and that "[s]uch interviews would count toward Rooney Rule compliance."

So if, at is has been widely reported, the Redskins interviewed secondary coach Jerry Gray for the job that until today Jim Zorn held, Gray will not need to be interviewed again, which is directly contrary to Sunday's report from ESPN's Chris Mortensen and sort-of contrary to the initial word we obtained from Aiello, who told us on December 20 that the Rooney Rule as it applies to head coaches presumes the existence a vacancy.

Though this development seems to close the book on the Redskins' efforts to satisfy the requirements of the rule, it does nothing to alter our belief that the franchise has made a mockery of the mandate by picking a new G.M. and a new head coach and then interviewing in-house minority candidates who had no chance of being hired for either job, and that the league office and the Fritz Pollard Alliance failed to keep it from happening.

The Rooney Rule was adopted in response to not-so-subtle threats of a lawsuit from Johnnie Cochran and Cyrus Mehri. In theory, the rule would serve as evidence supporting the league's diverse and inclusive hiring practices if/when a legal challenge occurs.

As a practical matter, however, the Redskins' handling of the ultimate hiring of Mike Shanahan (unless he gets a better offer or cold feet) will be used against the league if/when a racial discrimination suit is filed by a minority candidate who believes that the practice of allowing the current minority employees of a team to be interviewed for jobs that aren't yet vacant necessarily transforms the rule into a form-over-substance exercise in managing litigation risk.

So long as Shanahan gets hired, I'm okay with whatever direction he decides to go in. This isn't some first time around the block head coach (nor is this a head coach coming off a decade-long sabbatical), this is a seasoned veteran that knows who and what is needed to run his offense. If he deems a QB worthy of his system, then that QB probably is. For the first time in a long time, this franchise looks like it may have someone in charge that you can wholeheartedly trust with his decisions.

Agreed. Though want Shanny as HC, not president. He'll have plenty of influence as a HC. That 8 year, $400000000000000000000 guaranteed deal he's going to sign pretty much assures that

To those who say the Skins don't need another SS - Eric Berry is a once-in-a-decade difference-maker on defense. Think Ed Reed. Tennessee used him everywhere this year - he is a disruptor and the kind of palyer who elevates everyone else around him. The only problem is he may not be there at No. 4.

You're entirely missing the point here. We're talking about draft status, not free agency. Brees was already an established QB, so despite his injury, teams knew what he could do in the pro game: read defenses, move around in the pocket, etc. So the Saints were willing to take a chance on him because even if his arm strength was weaker, he could make up for it ala Pennington. You don't know anything about Bradford that would tell you the same thing. What other intangibles does Bradford bring to the table in the pro game that's worthy of risking a top five on him?? Huh? Hmm? What's that now?

If the Redskins take a QB with the fourth pick, I might be done with this team after 30 years. They are high enough they may be able to trade down and have two first-rounders. Even if they do that they can't afford to spend one on a QB. Re-sign Campbell, build the O-line. On defense find a solid (non-star) free safety (in draft or free agency) and re-sign Stonehands Rogers on the cheap.

You know it was quite a stretch for JOE GIBBS when he arrived as an unknown in D.C. from the west coast. I wish JIM ZORN all the best. He's got enough in the bank now or very soon to be independently wealthy if he lives a fairly simple lifestyle.

SHANAHAN I just can't get excited about. He didn't do well in DENVER after ELWAY and DAVIS were done. After all the mis-steps over the past eleven years by the ownership, I feel very uneasy about this HC.

And I'm not sure I'll survive another ten year debacle if this doesn't work out. After all my hero SAM BAUGH is not with me any longer. It's now or never for this REDSKINS fan.

Perhaps one of our biggest improvements is going to be getting the players on our roster to play better. But we're going to look at any and all means of improving our team through the draft, free agency, and trades. Anything that we feel improves us we'll look at. He expects that the players to give a commitment to the team that they haven't given before. He'll be aggressive in player acquisition: FA, draft, trades. IMHO. none of this years' QB's have got "IT" as JOHN MADDEN would have said. And BRADFORD's injuries are disturbing. The reports do not have him grade out as a top 5 pick other than the fact that it's a lean year for that position. But relative to other drafts its a weak one for QB's.

If the other three clubs grab tackles on both sides of the line, I would take CLAUSEN. He seems to be the one QB that may have a future in the NFL. But taking QB's in the first round is a real crap-shoot.

You can miss with linemen also, but they pan out a bit better IMO, and generally the better ones also last longer than all but the very top QB's. CHRIS SAMUELS comes immediately to mind.

"To those who say the Skins don't need another SS - Eric Berry is a once-in-a-decade difference-maker on defense." Where have we heard this before? Oh, yeah 2007! yeah, that hasn't worked out as planned.

The game is about Blocking and Tackling. We aren't any good at either, really. But offense is the issue over a solid (not great) D. Okung is a man that would help a lot for the next decade. And I'd look at McCluster(Ole Miss)in Round 2 instead of Spiller at #4/5 or interior O-line.

Lets also not forget that those were during years of very good Chiefs teams early, then very good Chargers teams recently and in the AFC which for quite a while has had stronger teams and tougher competition to get in the playoffs. Having to play the Colts and Steelers in round 1 of the playoffs is a little different than getting to play the Seahawks, or Bucs.

Basically:
"We're looking to add a passionate winner at head coach who can coach the players we have and get them to play better. Perhaps one of our biggest improvements is going to be getting the players on our roster to play better. But we're going to look at any and all means of improving our team through the draft, free agency, and trades. Anything that we feel improves us we'll look at. And the new coach will pick his staff, decide the fates of the current staff, and evaluate Campbell."
Posted by: zjfr2 | January 4, 2010 12:46 PM

Hopefully this means an open competition for EVERY roster spot, from starter to 3rd/4th string…..I don’t want to hear how Portis is automatically our starting RB despite his injuries and aversion to practicing…….make these guys earn their paychecks, and hold them accountable when they don’t play as well as they can.

Blache is done, so is Buges. The others are in play here or elsewhere, basically free agents. Shanny can keep them if he wants or send em down the road.

If Zimmer is a candidate for DC, will have to wait for the Bengals to finish the playoffs. Slowik can come in immediately. The only question left is: Will Redskin One route through Houston to pick up little Shanny on the way to DC, or will he have to get a commercial flight? Continental prolly has a seat outta Houston to Dulles, LOL.

I'd have a hard time believing that Campbell won't throw more than 20 TDs and less than 15 INTs with a real line, real running game, and real head coach. There will be more time to throw, more chances to throw in the red zone, and less defenders in coverage.

BA is probably going to let someone lese make the JC decision for him. Even if you like JC you have to admit that the team is better off trading him for a 1st rounder. So if we tender him and someone matches the offer he's gone. If they don't then he stays. From ESPN Insider

Shanny wheels already in motion?
12:59PM ET
Mike Shanahan | Broncos | Interested: Cowboys?, Redskins?
Top Email

With the news on Monday morning that the Washington Redskins have officially let head coach Jim Zorn go, the chatter is picking up that the official hire of Mike Shanahan as his replacement won't be far behind. As we know, the resignation of Vinny Cerrato weeks ago led to the hiring of Bruce Allen within 24 hours.

In a sign that perhaps the wheels are already fast in motion for Shanahan to be hired, ESPN.com's Bill Williamson emailed in with word from a Texans team source that Kubiak bid farewell to Kyle in front of the staff on Monday, and said that Kyle will be going wherever his father goes.

A lot is expected to shake out over the few days, stay tuned.

And hopefully it will come to light that Snyder isn’t making the decisions any longer. Other teams and player’s agents KNEW that when Snyder wanted someone, he would trade or spend just about anything to get his guy. For the past 10 years the FO has been “gotten” by other other GM’s in trades, and by agents who know they can get much higher contracts for their players when dealing with the Skins.

Who says they can't? With Shanahan running the offense and perhaps Zimmer running the D, what other pair could you get that's as formidable? Gibbs and Grilliams were a solid pair, but Gibbs offense was out of date. Whether you love or hate Shanahan, he's a proven offensive mind, something this team desperately needs. Who would you suggest as the coach, just out of curiosity?

In truth we really don't know what he will be. He is and has been a middle of the road guy now but with a pretty bad line or running game or as with this year - both.

How many more games do we win with just 4 more points this year? A better line certainly and the current stable of receivers/QB can get us that.

Dan Snyder's left testicle and an option on the right

Although I know its a done deal, I am not happy about Shanahan coming to Washington. Its just another case of finding some old guy who used to have the it factor, a name guy (no offense to St. Joe intended whatsoever)

Once again, Danny boy will go for the name and faded reputation instead of going for someone young who lives and breathes the football that is being played today. There won't be any Tomlin's for us but I think that where we should be looking, or in this case where we should have looked since Shanny is a freakin lock, is among the up and comers who are showing results in the here and now. Shanahan was let go from the Broncos for a good reason because he was yesterday's news and they wanted to go in a new direction. It was a smart move on their part to do it and to hire said up and comer. I despair, absolutely despair of that ever happening here. I can only wish. Instead we will get a guy whose best days are behind him but who is also Danny's big buddy. More of the same.

Of course, I wish Shanahan the best since I love my Skins and want them to succeed. I just don't see any hope in the situation just because a big name from the past is involved.

If OAKLAND wants a QB and BRADFORD's the REDSKINS pick, I say let AL DAVIS have him, and we take their first and a second or third from them for the right. That would be sweet. We can roll with giving up a fifth this year and third next year for the rights to DONALD PENN. Take a CB and RT in the second/second or third depending, a LG in the fourth and a FS in the seventh - TERRELL WHITEHEAD. Sign a solid UFA for SSLB, and three undrafted OG's for some new faces. Sign JC for two, and let PORTIS play another season. We have needs unmet at that point at FS with WHITHEAD, QB with CAMPBELL, and DT. Maybe MONTGOMERY steps up next year to be the player alongside MONEYSWORTH that everyone hoped he'd be.

You should put "when healthy" in bold letters, cause that's the major issue with him. I don't want to have to worry that everytime he takes a bone jarring hit, his shoulder is going to pop out like delicious toast out of a toaster.

Posted by: ga8085 | January 4, 2010 1:12 PM

Completely agree. I'd rather they do like Parcells did and go OT in the first round and QB in the second. I was only pointing out one of Bradford's positives.

Shanahan>Danahan=championship

Posted by: RomoShortball | January 4, 2010 1:19 PM | Report abuse

The only reason Shanahan hasn't had more success since Elway retired is that he has been in the same conference as the Colts, Pats, and Steelers. Come on, those teams have been great annually for a decade! I happen to think Denver jumped the gun in firing him and trading Cutler. You give the defense the Broncos had this year with the combo of Shanny/Cutler on the offensive side of the ball and they would be one of the best teams in the league. Instead you get Mcdaniels/Orton a major choke job and most likely they will be shipping Marshall out too and be in full rebuild mode next year. Shanny will turn us around and make us a consistently good playoff team annually by his second year. Let him shed the terrible contracts and most of the crap roster in the next two seasons and we'll be fine.

Posted by: zjfr2 | January 4, 2010 1:19 PM | Report abuse

Shanny got rid of the prima dona Portis once, I think it will be priority #1 again. Shanny knows that all he needs at RB is a couple of young backs with speed. I bet he keeps Mason and Ganther for a camp battle, signs a vet like Parker, C. Taylor, or McGahee, and then drafts a guy in the latter rounds.

Posted by: zjfr2 | January 4, 2010 1:10 PM

This makes sense. Shanahan's not gonna worry about a running back until he has a line for the guy to run behind.

Shanny has only been out of the league 1 year, and most were amazed he was fired in denver. By the way how is that up and comer doing in Denver he will be fired in a year or two.

Biggest difference between Shanahan and Gibbs?

Gibbs was out of football for 11 years and hadn't followed the game.

Shanahan, even if he wasn't employed for a year, has been very active in football for decades and is very much in touch with the game. There is no knowledge gap caused by an absence from the game -- something Gibbs struggled with during his tenure.

I think Campbell stays. Actually I am not sure, but I want him to stay. I think with a better line, better running game, better man calling plays, JC17 will be a better QB. 2TE sets with Cooley and Davis, bootlegs on the goaline. Shanny is great in the red zone. He needs a seasoned QB to run his system. JC is seasoned now. Coming off his first 20TD year. Plummer wasn't the best in AZ. Shanny made him better.

via ESPN:

Chris Johnson’s slated for $800,000 in 2011 and his base should jump from $960,000 to $2.5 million in 2012 because of an escalator.

The 24th pick in the 2008 draft is outperforming his five-year, $12 million deal, with $7 million guaranteed, but that’s what the Titans get for being smart enough to draft him.

Running backs have short life spans, Segal knows. If Johnson waits for his sixth year to get what he’s worth, odds are he won’t be worth it any more. Still it’s awfully early for any renegotiation.

“I think both sides will handle it well and get something done, because you definitely don’t want to break up this chemistry that’s going on with CJ. …He’s outplayed the contract and I think he deserves more money.”

General manager Mike Reinfeldt said the Titans haven’t even begun to ponder such things.

“He’s had a very special year,” Reinfeldt said. “But it’s also very rare that going into the third year people redo a deal.”

*************

As rare as a 2,000 yard season. Tennessee let Albert go .... are they willing to let CJ go ... ?

I'd keep Moss though. I just don't think we have enough resources to dump 15 players. We still need to fill out a roster and we only have 5 draft picks. The cap is coming back in 2011 so couple that with the limited amount of free agents I simply don't see a huge spending spree in our future. I could definitely see ARE, Samuels, Thomas, Portis, Betts, and Wynn gone though. Hopefuly we dump them and their contracts.

He'll be an RFA but I have read and heard they may not even tender him because of Peppers and the need to find a QB. Richardson (their owner) is pretty frugal and reportedly is pissed about the deal he just gave Delhomme, on top of what they spent to sign Gross, that they want to re-sign Peppers and find a new QB so the conjecture is they may just let Williams walk as they are comfortable with Stewart. IMO it would be silly not to at least tender him but we'll see.

Stumped,

Joe Gibbs - up and comer

so your point is what? Just because we hired some bad ones in the past doesnt mean that there are good ones out there. Now that we have a GM with some sense, we could get a good one. I wouldn't judge based on our results from the past. Like I said we need a guy who is totally plugged into how football is played today. The old guys no matter how hard they try eventually lose touch with that.

In Redskins history, we have developed talent more often than not just like we always managed to win without the big names going for team players with character instead. This is something that Dipwad Snyder has never seemed to understand but I would hope that Allen does. If he can't stop the Shanahan train then maybe he can apply this kind of sound philosophy to the rebuilding of this team.

No? Then can I assume that if/when something goes wrong that you won't be critical or say the team should have done this or done that or...?

What you wrote is considerably different than saying I have confidence that a proven head coach will make the decisions he believes are right based on his experience. And even then, it's nice to see that you won't question anything the new head coach will do; it will leave more room on the blogs and chats for everyone else to make their comments.

Make that seven for the secondary... forgot about Reed Doughty.

Since they've made advancements in migraine study, whats the likelihood of them bring back Terrell Davis to pair up with Portis in the backfield?

And Rod Smith just retired not too long ago as well, and he was only 35 when he retired... Jerry Rice played until he was 40... speaking of Rice, didn't he play for Denver while Shanahan was coaching there? Maybe they can get him to be the WR coach.

What is wrong with you people? Talking about a RB is pre-ma-ture.

The coolest thing would be to screw Al Davis by trading the No. 4 overall so he can pick Taylor Mays. Mays will probably put up a 4.4 or better at the combine, add that to 6'3" and 230 and Davis will discover that he doesn't, after all, need drugs to get a stiffee.

So, BA starts making noise about a Landry/Mays tandem, and what a dominating secondary that would be, etc. etc. Davis can't stand it and on draft day here's the deal:

Jason Campbell and the Redskins 4th over all.

Davis gives OAK first round this year, third rounder this year, and a first and second round next year.

Plus Jamarcus Russell. Book it!

Advice for the next victim on Danny's private "Survivor" show; draft a left tackle in the first round and a right guard in the second round who can actually block!

Oh lord trading to get Champ back are you serious? Just say no to drugs man. Bailey is past his prime now, I'd rather draft a top flight corner as trade for him.

Xpac69, let me define prime. when I draft a player in the 1st Round I expect that player to be around 6-10 years easily. Champ just finished his 11th season, he is already 31 so if you trade a 1st Rd Pick for him, and he lasted 6 years he'd be 38. I'm sorry, champ is good, but he is not going to last like Darrel Green did.

Not only are you a complete toolbag, you're also a wrasslin' watching assjockey.

"landry has 1 pick, doughty 1,rogers 0,smoot 0.now that shows how smart your not."

You really are some sort of crackbaby aren't you? Hello!!! There is this one CB, DeAngelo Hall who is part of the "backfield" that has FOUR, say it with me phonetic style: FO-WER, all by himself. The guy who makes seven is Justin Tryon.

i didnt say a first round pick.give them el rogers and a 3rd.

i guess you poobs can't read i said half and didn't include names.

I thought I read trading our 1st for Champ which would be ludicrous even as good as Champ is he's not worth a first for a team that is rebuilding. Rogers would be a RFA, I just do not see him being worth more than a 3rd or 4th rounder, and trading Draft picks for past prime players is what got us in this trouble to begin with...

Ah found it, it was BeantownGreg that suggested it.

"PFT is reporting that with the Redskins soon to be coached by Mike Shanahan, expect the Redskins to go after former Redskin, Champ Bailey. Shanahan was rumored to be so enamored by the skill set of Bailey, that he's reportedly willing to trade the Redskins first round draft pick in order to bring Champ back to DC"

how bout el and sign and trade rogers for bailey?

Posted by: xpac69 | January 4, 2010 2:21 PM | Report abuse

To all of those anti up and comers above:

Where in the hell did Gibbs and Shanahan come from? They were up and comers once. And Gibbs was the up and comer hire of all time for us here in DC or have you forgotten?

The difference is that Gibbs was hired by Beatherd, a smart GM. Spurrier and Zorn were hired by idiots (no offense to Zorn who I really liked.)

Somebody took a chance on Shanahan too. He didnt just pop out of nowhere already a superstar coach.

Get a clue.

Rogers is a restricted free agent, we would have to first tender him, and then they'd have to sign him. Problem is as a First Round pick, who would sign him to the kind of contract he could be required to receive?

Just announced on 106.7 that Shanahan was confirmed to be getting off the plane. Looks like our new coach has arrived. Albeit unofficially. For now.

Well it appears that Shanahan is in DC and the talks are underway and will go on into the night. I'm optimistic that a deal will be done and the era of bringing the Skins back to respectability can began. If Shanahan is hired, I hope the band-wagon riders don't expect a SB next season. I'm just glad that Snyder finally figured out that him and Vinny just didn't know what the hell they were doing and turned the keys over to more experienced drivers. You guys see any keepers from the old staff? I think GBlache is on his way back to Lousy-ass-anna or wherever he's from to use that new over-under shotgun Snyder used as a gift to coax him back as DC. Well here's hoping it's time to hail the Skins again. Cheers
