Redskins players arrive as Mike Shanahan's offseason program begins

Today marks a beginning of sorts. This is the first day of the Redskins' offseason conditioning program, and it's the first time coach Mike Shanahan will be able to meet and see many of his players in-person.

Some players have been rehabilitating in the area, make this their offseason home or have been lifting at Redskins Park, so Shanahan has met a few. But he's made clear how much he's been looking forward to today.

He's also made clear that though the workouts are technically voluntary, he expects everyone to be present. Matt Terl, the team's official blogger, tweeted that he has already seen Clinton Portis, Albert Haynesworth and Laron Landry this morning.

"I'm looking forward to the people that are there," Shanahan said last week. "People are there that want to get better, do everything they can to help our football team win in the future. Just kind of looking forward to spending some time and kicking it off on the right note."

We can't really tell you what all is entailed by the team's offseason conditioning program this year. We know there's some new equipment. And we know the weightroom has undergone a face-lift of sorts. And we know that the entire strength and conditioning staff has been overhauled. But the team wouldn't make Ray Wright, the head strength
and conditioning coach, or one else available to discuss the offseason conditioning program. Hopefully we can share more with you later in the week.

We've heard all about how the coaches supposedly plan to use Haynes, Carter, Rocky Mac.

We've yet to hear how the coaches supposedly intend to use laron Landry.

Given that he, more than anyone else last year, appeared to be misused/mis-positioned by the coaches it would be nice to get a little info from Haslett and Co. about where they see Landry lining up.

Particularly if we are talking about moving to a 3-4, is it possible to see Landry line up in an OLB position on some plays with Chris horton as SS?

Beware of any player that blows up on a perennially awful squad.

See Roy Williams' move from Detroit to Dallas and Archuleta's move from St. Louis to Washington.

That doesn't mean they can't have quality players over there, just that they might not be what people are cracking them up to be.

Let's hope the new conditioning program emphasizes cardio over sheer size, especially for linemen. There were some dragging a$$e$ out on the field last year.

Maybe this year, CP will also get serious about his cardio. There's not much he can do about losing a step, but he can make sure of his ability to take the next one.

One thing I thought Zorn was right about was the lack of tempo on offense. Part of the problem was that guys got tired too easily, and were walking up to the line of scrimmage after breaking the huddle. Part of the problem was that Zorn wasn't getting the plays in fast enough. And part of the problem was that Campbell took too long to read the defense.

Zorn was right about tempo, and his failure as a coach caused it.

Next, it'll be 'unnecessary, but you have to make sure you do it.'

p1... thats not an awful idea. Landry at OLB a couple of times a game would definitely confuse teams... only problem is it'd be pretty obvious what he would be doing at OLB. We all know he cant cover for his life... so his only real option there would be blitzing, or maybe gap control for a run but most likely blitzing...

Still though, it would be nice for the coaching staff to explain a little more about what their plans are for this defense... secrecy is nice and apprecaited around here (what with all the leaks we've had in the past)... but at some point its not a bad idea to give the fans a little something to chew on while we wait for meaningful games to start again.

According to MAyock, their are 7 A+ LTs in the draft and 5 really good ones after that.MAyock and Lombardi think one of those top teir guys would still be sitting there @ #37.

So why waste such a high pick on such a low value?? (Because we would only get the 2nd best LT available @ #4. Okung to the Lions)

Posted by: 4thFloor | March 15, 2010 10:20 AM

4th,

What if the Lions and Cheifs use your strategy and take the best player available in the 1st round then draft one of those A-grade tackles in the 2nd? They both draft ahead of us and both need O-linemen.

With a possibility of 6 or 7 offensive linemen being drafted in the first 36 picks, we may not find a starter if we pass on OT in the 1st round

I would like some amateur opinions about the draft. I am of the argument that if you evaluate a QB as a bonafide starter and possible game changer then you have to draft him if you get the opportunity.

Thus the dilemma, I really want the Redskins to draft a offensive tackle at the 4 spot but I realize that if Shanahan believes that Clausen is that type of player then the Redskins have no choice but to draft him. I could and would not argue with that choice.

I am hoping the Reskins will not be at this position in the draft for a long time and may not get an opportunity to address the QB position with an elite player. I guess I am preparing myself for the possibility that they have to take Clausen.

Any thoughts?

We wont know squat, until QB pro days. I would imagine that Shanny will ask alot of Clausen on his pro day.

Ok...how about your amateur opinion JCNJCNJ?

Posted by: gallrick | March 15, 2010 11:00 AM | Report abuse

Hah, Arch was awful for the Redskins.

On the Rams toward the end of his tenure, Archuleta was good for 3-5 sacks per season, 2-3 turnovers per season, at least 1 defensive TD per season, and being one of the team leaders in tackles.

There's a reason he was given the richest contract ever for a safety.

And Roy Williams put up a 1,370 yard season and averaged nearly 8 TDs a year in his first 3 in the league.

Atogwe fits the bill perfectly as a guy with one stellar season under his belt for an awful team, and a few solid looking ones from a statistical perspective. But if he was actually the impact player he's billed as, his team would figure to have more to show for it.

And it's not just the Redskins avoiding Atogwe...it's every team in the NFL.

So again, buyer beware. He may be the real deal, but he very easily could be just another mediocre player shining because of the awful talent surrounding him.

The Browns will try to move ahead of Seattle to take Clausen. We are ahead of Seattle. We can move from 4 to 7 and pick up a 2nd and possibly 4th or 5th rounder. Good for us.

I like the idea of trading back for a couple of picks. But once again you cannot pass on a franchise QB if one is available. It all comes down to Shanahan's evaluation of Clausen. I say Clausen because Bradford will go number #1 to the Rams.

I like Campbell, but as a back-up. He is not suited for the west coast offense...just isnt.

Seeing this, I wish we'd made a play for Hillis, especially if we could have had him for just a 6th or 7th rounder in next years draft...he was a Shanahan draftee in Denver, and is one of the quality young FB in the league - he can block, run, catch, and contribute on specials (i.e. would have been an ideal replacement for the aged Mike Sellers).

Here's the low down on Clausen. I've been researching. I consider myself the 'Brackotologest' of the Mock Drafters.

Clausen is pegged to us @ #4 by Lombardi and Kiper. Lombardi also says both top QBs won't pass The Browns.

McShay doesn't like Clausen and doesn't think he'll get picked until the 2nd round. Or should get picked until the 2nd round.

Mayock says their is too much unknown with Clausen outside of playing the game. But he thinks he can make all of the NFL throws. He questions his leadership of men. He heard of Stories as if he was born with a silver spoon in his mouth. (He arrived to sign his letter of intent to ND in a limo). He's unsure weather he can 'command' the huddle.

Don't you feel the way FA is going that Skins are heading toward #1 LT & #2 QB??

I don't see how this Lombardi has Okung going #6 to Seattle.

I Definitely could see Skins going Okung/Bulaga or whoever else they feel is the #1 LT then drafting a QB like McCoy.

Alot of people have the 'Skins taking Clausen, but where is the starting LT on our team?? If you wait til the 2nd round, nothing says your going to get that guy... RT yes, LT nope.

There has to be a team out there that has McCoy/Suh near the top of their board & be willing to move up. The absolute best option if your the 'Skins & Okung is gone is to move back & take best LT available, extra pick(s) & then draft QB with 2nd rounder.

I've said Clausen before at #4, but I didn't know too much about McCoy & his accuracy... plus last impression of him at the Rose Bowl was definitely cause for concern with his dead arm.

With the Bengals:

Larry Johnson

7 (games not as a starter) 46(atts) 204 (yds) 4.4 (avg.)

With the Chiefs (as a starter):

7 games 132 (att) 377 (yds.) 2.9 (avg.) 19

Where's the Buck Fiddy?

This guy looks like a guy who went to a playoff team and drew all the benefits that come with that.

Cedric Benson's back up in Cincy seemed to benefit from his beating up opposing defenses more than anything.

And as for Johnson's replacement in KC, Jamaal Charles:

190 (atts.) 1120 (yards) 5.9 (avg.)

Not bad.

Yes, Charles did have a monstah game that makes the numbers that impressive, but hey--isn't that the point?

Posted by: Vicc | March 15, 2010 10:53 AM

In my mock based off of a collective group of 'Mocks'......I have the Lions and Chiefs pegged at drafting a LT in the 1st round. If they don't and employ the same strategy, the same amount of players will be there.

That's 2 thrown back into the pool of available players. So, that would be a wash if we include those 'What ifs'. And we should still be able to get the last 5 star or 1st 4 star LT.

I think (IMHO) that is much wiser than getting the 2nd valued guy @ LT with the #4 pick......

I'd love more "inside info", too, but Shanahan seems to like to play things very close to the vest. I would guess he doesn't care too much about keeping the media or bloggers happy. Especially because the vast majority of fans don't care about this day-to-day stuff, and the best way to make all the fans, bloggers and non-bloggers, happy is to increase the Ws. I have a feeling we may start getting more info after players and coaches start interacting more--you know, anonymous sources and all.

I loathe the term "franchise QB" - seriously, it's so overrated. Of the 32 teams in the NFL, only around half of them have what could be deemed as a "franchise QB."

And Jimmy flippin' Clausen has bust written all over him.

Me thinks there is something brewing between the Rams and Redskins. Carriker, Atogwe, oh yes draft picks as well. What's Bruce Allen up to. For the record I would take both in a heart beat, trouble is for what in return.

Def feel it could go that way. 1st RD - LT, 2nd RD - QB.....or flip flopped....

I don't see how Okung last until the 6th pick either.....I personally don't think he'll last past #2....

Skins will draft OT with first two picks. Book that ish

I beg your pardon! I happen to be pretty good at this....won my office pool several times. Although I do admit to being pretty lousy in the RI pool last year.

Posted by: Lisa_R | March 15, 2010 11:29 AM | Report abuse

Moving back would be ideal. Its not easy to do, but hopefully Bradford/Clausen have great pro days, Okung heals quickly from his injury at the combime, Suh and Mccoy go off on their pro days and teams are just foaming at the mouth for those 4-6 players... enabling us to use that to move back. We could really use more picks, especially another 2nd... that would enable us to take LT in the 1st, RT in the 2nd, and possibly a QB/RB/ LB in the 2nd as well depending on whose left and who we deem the best player available at that point... It would just be too perfect for it to work out like that...

I think there are more like
5-6 Franchise QB's- Your Bradys and BBMs
3-5 young future franchise QB's- your Ryans and Flaccos
10-15 QB's who will have careers as starters in the NFL starting for many different teams- You Bledsos Testiverties (sp) and Brad Johnsons.

And then you have spots in the league for another bunch of QB's who can probably start for 2-3 years and thats it.

Hey Lisa...I dont like the term "franchise QB" either...but trying to hang with the peeps!! I guess the general consensus is to take a LT with the 4th pick and hope that Campbell morphs into a competent starter??

Posted by: gallrick | March 15, 2010 11:41 AM | Report abuse

Just love the idea of having a "Porti-John" in the backfield this season... and with JC17 stinking up the joint as usual... this is going to be one excrementally bad offense!

My God, what a polyglot assemblage of o-line talent; DOCKERY, servicable; RABACH, old; HICKS, unknown; and oh yeah, last years leftovers, WILLIAMS and WILLIAMS, and MONTGOMERY. RINEHART? Newbies like "Danger" WIL ROBINSON, and who? No wonder BUGES called it a career. Jeeze, what a scary bunch.

And we're gonna' have to draft a QB in the first? You've GOT to be kidding me. Maybe a little trade like HAYNESWORTH to a 4-3 club for an o-lineman worth his salt, and a low round draft choice.

No luck at ILB either. Another point of need in a 3-4.

Oh, and NT. A recovering achilles heel player, and I like the kid outta' EAST CAROLINA, LINVAL JOSEPH, but he's been moved up from the fifth to the second round by WALTER football which means he's out of reach for the 'SKINS unless he falls all the way to the fourth round.

Meanwhile the club has players on hooks in the water fishing for:

SOUP - a first.
HEYER - a ????
DOUGHTY - a second ????.
ROGERS - a first.
McINTOSH - a second.
WILSON - a ????
MONTGOMERY, A. - a fifth.

So far not so good.

Campbell will morph into a competent starter when the Skins get Ronnie Brown and Cadilac Williams. Shanny can coach-up Clausen to be more than competent

That's what I'm hoping for.....just can't see us drafting a QB at #4 when we have so many needs on the O line. Especially Jimmy Clausen :(

Let's hope the new conditioning program emphasizes cardio over sheer size, especially for linemen. There were some dragging a$$e$ out on the field last year

As the Redskins move forward:
Watching this coach do his thing has been
beautiful. Smart. Strong. Intelligent. Shroud. All the warriors are there and excited...the why he has looked and chosen these few FA (all strong knowing dudes)is a action of art and knowledge.
This team won't take no prisoners.
Go Redskins destroy dallas...punish dallas

"We can't really tell you what all is entailed by the team's offseason conditioning program this year. We know there's some new equipment. And we know the weightroom has undergone a face-lift of sorts. And we know that the entire strength and conditioning staff has been overhauled. But the team wouldn't make Ray Wright, the head strength
and conditioning coach, or one else available to discuss the offseason conditioning program."

This is the kind of Pulitzer-prize winning investigative journalism that gives the Post its good name.

I heard talk of redskins "ideal" draft going like this

Trading a 2011 2nd pick for T Jared gaither
drafting T Russel okung 4th overall and are you ready folks
drafting QB tim tebow 5th pick 2nd round (37th overall)
...thoughts!

Any update on who showed up for workouts??? J Reid, I'm pulling for you, but seriously, there's been a drop off in reliable and "new" information since you've been blogging.

Posted by: MadeRED | March 15, 2010 6:02 PM | Report abuse

where is the news about today's workouts? anything at all??

I've been checking this blog less and less lately...all it has is the same few people still bellyaching about which QB we should take...enough already...why don't we start talking about what is actually happening...like today....

the fact that clinton, landry and hanes(not)worth(milions) showed up and the tides are definitely changing??

it would be easier to keep the topics of conversation current if JReid was doing his job and keeping current information flowing...
