Shanahan could be introduced Tuesday

Mike Shanahan is expected to be named head coach of the Redskins, according to sources in the organization, and, barring unforeseen glitches, will likely be introduced in a news conference Tuesday.

That timeline makes sense, they said, because new General Manager Bruce Allen last week told people in the organization that the unsettled situation surrounding the Redskins' top coaching position likely would be completely resolved by Tuesday.

Shanahan arrived this afternoon, his flight from Colorado landing at Dulles at around 3 p.m., about 12 hours after Jim Zorn's two-year tenure ended.

As we previously reported, Allen instructed assistant coaches to begin completing their season-ending evaluations of players. Allen will provide Shanahan with the forms, the sources said, in an effort to help Shanahan get up to speed on the roster as soon as possible.

Several of Zorn's assistants are under contract for the 2010 season, but the staff will undergo sweeping change, according to a league source familiar with Shanahan's plans. What remains unclear is whether Shanahan will have the dual title of team president and coach, as Joe Gibbs did in his second stint with the Redskins under owner Daniel Snyder.

Regardless of titles, though, Shanahan is expected to have significant input in player-personnel decisions. Allen is an adept football administrator and a salary-cap expert, league sources said, but he is not considered as strong in evaluating talent.

"...trade down, trade down, trade down..."

This is posted on every blog featuring the witless thoughts of a fanbase whose team is not in the playoffs.

Like ours.

I like phrases like, "Trade a future pick to get more high picks."

I'd give up the 1st rounder in '11 if it yielded another 2nd rounder.

That gives 3 picks in rounds 1-2.

We need top round guys, the kind of offensive linemen guys that become pro bowlers.

Two tackles and a right guard would satisfy as much as a quarterback, tackle, guard.

The redskins don't have a true, dynamic offensive threat or the players to block for one should he be acquired.

Jason Campbell? Clinton Portis?: Shanny will wave good bye to them and all the promise they once held as redskins.

Santana Moss and Chris Cooley might want to amp up their games as a big name coach wants his own young'ns to make stars out of.

And don't put me to sleep with chatter about sacrificing the future.

Our sorry recent past and present justify creativity of any sort when you can't beat another team's second teamers.

And I'll be the FIRST to point that out.

Take a look at how many times Shanahan got the Broncos in the playoffs after Elway left. Or better yet, how many playoff games he won after Elway left. BTW - he was 24-24 the last 3 years in Denver. Get used to mediocrity!

in 15 years of coaching, how many playoff games has belichick won w/out brady. answer = 1

in 9 years of coaching, how many playoff games did jimmy johnson win w/out aikman. answer = 0 (even w/ marino)

how many playoff games did walsh win without montana. answer = 0.

you can play this game all day long. how many super bowls did reeves win with elway?

not saying shanny is the best or that i like the move, but point this fact out is irrelevant. guys got 2 rings. lots of coaches w/ better qb's have none. makes you appreciate what guys like gibbs and parcells were able to do with no hall of fame QB's.

Rocky 52 - has 290 tackles over 4 year and averages 14.4 games played. Thats 4 more games and 30 more tackles than the "truth"

Orakpo - has 50 tackles and 11 sacks - on par with Ray.

LFB has 1480 tackles in 12 years (2 more than Dahani) but 700 more tackles and is on his 3rd team as well.

So however you measure - the Skins - stack up just fine if not well above the Bangle's "Truth" team...

Well, the days of Gibbs and Parcells have come and gone.

Do you advocate Shanny drafting another quarterback or putting his faith in Jason Campbell?

Me?: I'd sign Campbell to a 2-3 year deal, pay him a nice signing bonus, and draft his replacement while the new offensive line gelled.

But I don't think this will happen.

Or will it?

Hey 4th,

Only because I think it is worth discussing - and for the record - I like the Cinci D - bu there's some food for thought...

I added stats to your comments.

Ray and Keith are the straight truth.
Ray - a great rookie season at 63 tackles, but is now on IR.
Keith - only 103 tackles and 20 games played in 2 seasons - missed 12 games.
Dahani (who I also played against in high school) brings in the Veteran Leadership to that Defense. And they be crushing dudes.....
Dahani is on his 3rd team in 10 years, but has posted two of his top 3 seasons in 08 and 09.

#52....He's good, but can he go beyond that? And LFB is getting old....You know the old saying, better to get rid of them one year early than one year too late.....

Why wouldn't you want the coach, especially a proven coach with Super Bowl titles and a strong winning percentage involved in the player evaluation and personnel decisions? As long as he's not the only guy that has the only say he and the GM should be working hand in hand and should both have a say. Cause if it doesn't work 9 times out of 10 they both get fired anyway. Allen was a player, and a coach at high levels of football and knows what he's doing. Shanahan was very successful and for all the "he didn't win anything without Elway" crap nobody won with Elway before him. Do good teams need good QBs? of course, do good QBs need good coaches? yes! This is a great day, all you whiners don't know this won't be a winning formula, all you have is guesses like lets get Russ Grimm (who has been passed over in 3 places for HC jobs) or some no-name of who you have no suggestion or idea if they can succeed "up and comer". Give this pairing a chance before you get on them, their experience and records deserve that at the very least. And that experience may just be what Snyder needs to trust them to do their jobs and stay out of it. We are better off today than we have been in since Marty was fired, give it time before you whine.

Posted by: FloridaCapsFan | January 4, 2010 4:49 PM | Report abuse

i'd hope that shanny would feel that he can keep campbell and coach him up so top draft pick can be used on OL or RB or something else. Drafting a new QB in 1st round would be starting from scratch, which might be necessary, but I'm not sure that JC can't be better with the right coach.

And it's posted by the dumbest fans in the witless fan base. Why are they dumb? Because they don't realize that NO ONE wants to trade into the top four picks. In the last five NFL drafts, only one team traded into slot number five -- the New York Jets last year to grab Sanchez. And no team traded into slots 1-4.

So all your draft dreamers, making your fantasy picks 14 weeks before the draft, need to realize one thing: We're picking number 4. That's ours. We earned it, and no one will give us doodly squat to take it off our hands.

from what i've heard from denver fans/friends, shanny's ego, wile, and will power will dominate everyone, including snyder. it's about time that snyder got a real football coach that isn't afraid to say, "you own the franchise but i own the team."

Posted by: chris_zz | January 4, 2010 5:03 PM | Report abuse

MistaMoe, you funny.

I think that you are on point about trading down. I don't agree with the guy who said that no one wants to trade up into the top 6. There always seems to be at least one team who wants to do that. For example, there will be someone who will be desperate to get Bradford, say, the way the Jets were desperate to get Sanchez. I definitely think that they should and will be on the lookout to make a deal like this. I believe that the influence of Allen and Shanahan will help. Even though they did strike gold with Orakpo and did not return immediate results with the drafting of the 3 2d round receivers, anyone can see that there are so many holes to be filled here that the trade down strategy needs to be a priority.

Posted by: rgj21 | January 4, 2010 5:03 PM | Report abuse

Nothing is certain, but even if it comes with an 8-8 record, I look forward to a coach that rarely smiles, and is willing to yell and swear, that doesn't compliment his players for "trying their hardest" in the worst of defeats, that has proven NFL coaching experience and a decent track record, and that injects some badly needed discipline among the players.

Is Shannahan B. Allens' choice or Snyder's? It seems to me that Snyder coveted Shannahan before Bruce Allen was hired. Given the speed at which this hire is being completed, I think I have the answer to my question. So, in his first act as GM, B. Allen is not distinguishing his tenure from that of his predecessor. This is what worries me. I am satisfied with both Allen and Shanny, but I am not happy if Snyder chose Shanny and then Allen said, "yeah, that sounds like a GOOD idea."

Not being pessimistic yet givein Bruce Allen's history and links to head coaches this is more a Snyder decision and his friendship w/ Shanahan.

The Skins need some stability. For better or worse, they need to keep the next coach for at least 3 years before firing him -- barring him comitting some horrible crime.

They should keep Campbell, but find a promising 2d or 3d rounder for QB who is a project and can learn.

Key priority has to be upgrading the O-line and probably a new running back, depending on Betts' and Portis' condition. I don't think Portis is going to play again though. They could use a combination receiving/running threat out of the backfield. But it starts with O-line.

The D is ok, but we could use more corner depth. I actually agree with Haynesworth in his criticism of Blache. We ran the most vanilla defense. I think a more creative coach is going to get this D into the top 5 next year.

I agree that 'the system' did not play to the D's strengths and that it was very basic, but it sure would sound better if Hayensworth didn't make those comments after resting 2 out of every 3 plays hooked up to an IV and oxygen tank.

Pick winners, develop winners. How do you do that? I don't know. That's why they're paying Bruce and co. the big bucks.
(None of that stuff meant anything before 2010, but I do believe pinhead Snyder's gonna keep his bugeyed face out of the decisions for a little while.)

Trading down the first pick is a great idea. Maybe get some team's QB plus their first, second and later round pick. Skins are not, I repeat are not one great QB from being great!. They could rebuild with an average, safe QB (Campbell) and draft/trade fro someone who will be a gem in a couple of years

I don't expect Shanahan to lead the Redskins to the promised land, but hopefully he can lead us back to respectability and build a foundation that his successor can build upon.

Granted I thought Gibbs did that, but Snyder tore down the foundation as soon as Gibbs left.

Shanahan was essentially hired mid-season after he first met with Snyder. Allen was then hired to jettison Cerrato and give some legitimacy to the 'hiring' of Shanahan. The whole Rooney rule thing with interviewing Jerry Gray was a joke. The league chose to look the other way so that Snyder could hire who he wanted without going through other formalities.

As for personnel evaluation, neither Allen or Shanahan has been strong in this area. A strong director of player personnel is needed to work under Allen and keep some checks and balances in the system. Allen's biggest role will be keeping Snyder out of Shanny's way and making sure he stays out of personnel decisions.

As for Campbell, who on this blog can say how good he would be behind a decent line with a running game? I saw him throw 20 TD's while absorbing more hits and sicks than any QB in the NFL. I'm sure he'll do fine if signing by a team like Carolina or San Fran who needs a good, stable QB.

Posted by: wizfan89 | January 4, 2010 6:11 PM | Report abuse

Allen and Shanahan can use Snyder as the "negative indicator". If Snyder gets excited about a certain player or draft pick, they should avoid that player or draft pick.

Trading down is the way to go, stockpile as many high-round picks as possible. Look back at how Jimmy Johnson built the dominant Dallas teams of the 90s. It all started when he traded an aging Herschel for a boat-load of picks. Trading Cooley because of the emergence of Davis as a receiving threat could yield some more nice picks. In the draft, O-line, O-line, maybe a good cover CB, O-line, and maybe a QB or an explosive RB depending on where we fall. Give Tebow a shot if he's still around late in round 2. Keep JC at QB for another year though. Who is better out there that we could reasonably get without mortgaging the future? Even if we do pick a QB, he'll need at least a year of seasoning on the bench and in mop-up time, and there's no way he'd be better than JC on the field in 2010. Moss still has a couple of good years left in him and could put up big #s in the right system under Shanny, especially if Thomas and Kelly continue to develop along with Davis at TE. Portis's tank is on empty and should be gone if we can find a younger and more explosive back through free agency or the draft to replace him.

The Shanahan move will prove to be yet another mistake, and its classic how often Danny Boy gets it wrong. So glad I gave up on this team till Danny Boy is gone, Go Caps, and pray Ted L takes full control of the Wizards soon

Trade Portis, Cooley and Moss
Cut ARE
Keep JC until a better option develops over the next couple of years

if this is going to be a no cap year, it is a great opportunity to unload the dead weights without taking a cap hit. Any free agent who wants to sign with Redskins should have a performance clause in their contract. (injury/disability is another issue, but make the compensation based on stats and team record) If the free agents don't like it, they can go somewhere else. Redskins should stop being the Hores.

Shanahan,

PLEASE use your scouts, unlike the previous administrations ever did.

PLEASE!

"does zimmer run a 34 or a 43 defense"

4-3

Here's the thing though. Marvin Lewis said Zimmer is the first coach that he never had to second guess his play calling, that they were on the exact same page.

That's ok by me.

Another washed up coach for a washed up owner and football team...

Posted by: FedUp8 | January 4, 2010 6:55 PM | Report abuse

As a life long Bronco fan and Shanahan supporter, I can tell you that the Redskins will be getting a pretty good coach. If Shanny gets hired, you will have one of the most dominant offenses in all of football. His only downside is that he puts little emphasis on defense and it tends to show up at the worst times. You’ll score 30-40 points a game, but give up almost the same. Hope that you keep or get a strong D-Coordinator and that Shanny will not meddle with the defense. He’s a great offensive mind and coach, but hard headed and stubborn to the point of failure if he hasn’t changed his ways after getting fired in Denver. Here's hoping that you have a great season and get ready to watch some high scoring games.

Posted by: bobalulaw | January 4, 2010 6:55 PM | Report abuse

The NFL merry-go-round continues. Didn't this guy Shanahan get fired by Denver? Why was he fired? Because he didn't produce; he didn't win. So now he triples his previous contract and will try again in DC. Boy...what a life!!
I trust that Allen will request ALL coaches to resign, and will allow the next Head Coach to bring in his own staff. If ANY of them are retained before the next Coach is hired, then we'll know that NOTHING has changed.

Cool, I hear John Elway is going to sign on too! Maybe he can get his # 7 back...Campbell better pack his bags! Onto the Show !!! We all know Shanahan won several more superbowls after Elway retired,WOW!!!!! Elway coming out of retirement to QB the skins under Shanahan's leadership!!!!!

BRANDON MARSHALL NO!!!!!!!!!!!!

Haven't we learned, good teams do not let true All Pro's go. If the player has talent and his own team doesn't want him, there is probably a reason. Jason Taylor? Adam Archuleta? Antwaan Randle-El? Dare I say, Albert Haynesworth?

We finally seem to have good WR depth at the top and do not need the headaches that would accompany Marshall. What we need are good, young #4 and #5 guys who will fill roles when Moss, Thomas or Kelly is injured, and will fill in on special teams. We do not need a prima donna like Marshall coming in and bumping 11 and 12 down the depth chart just when they are starting to grow as players.

Portis is done. Talk of trying to trade him is moot. No one would or should give up value to acquire a RB with that many miles (who is less talented at this stage of his career than the #3 man on the Cowboys or Eagles). NO ONE will trade for him so we need to go ahead and release him at the most advantageous time cap-wise.

Posted by: jksesq1 | January 4, 2010 7:04 PM | Report abuse

Mike Zimmer traditionally runs a 4-3, although he did run a 3-4 when Parcells worked with him in Dallas.
If Shanahan goes to his comfort zone, the zone-blocking scheme, we'll have to completely rebuild our O-line (if it doesn't need to be rebuilt already) but the interesting thing is it values different qualities in lineman, speed and versatility over raw, immobile power. I'll bet we can get O-linemen in lower rounds that fit the zone-blocking scheme better than more coveted linemen.
If we keep the pick, keep your eye on Colt McCoy - the staff will have Texas connections and Shanahan likes to build around a franchise QB, not a game manager. He had Elway and tried to repeat the experience with Griese then Cutler.

Posted by: minorthread | January 4, 2010 7:05 PM | Report abuse

Shanahan wont change things. The problem with the DeadSkins isn't the coaching. It is the owner! That's right Danny, I said it, and will say it again! DAN SNEIDER SUCKS! If he has any respect as the fan he claims to be, he should just sell the team and walk away. I am sure the fans (not to mention the players) will rejoice! And maybe, just maybe we will get peanuts in the shell back!

PORTIS POCKETS STRAIT!

Posted by: rlomax67 | January 4, 2010 7:09 PM | Report abuse

The fastest road to respectability: Keep Campbell, draft a quarterback to groom, work on fixing both lines and add a running back to groom.

There's no QB we could acquire who would immediately be a significant upgrade over Campbell. We have a ton of holes, so keep Campbell and address the lines first. Get a young QB and let him begin learning while Campbell starts for another season.

But don't pick Sam Bradford, please. He's way too fragile. Can you imagine him behind the line we currently have? It would be Boomer Sooner, all right, and Bradford would be on injured reserve after three games.

Shanahan is a smart guy, and I'll bet he's figured some things out while he was away. Especially about that poor playoff record after Elway retired. Shanahan has something to prove again, and that's powerful motivation.

I don't care if Vince Lombardi's ghost steps off the plane from Denver... The Redskins are years and years away from consistent playoff contention.

Until danny goes redskin fans will continue to have their hapiets moments from the last of of the season until the first day of the season.

We win the off-season sweepstakes each and every year.

Other possible scenarios tomorrow: (1) Joe Gibbs 3.0 (2) Jerry Gray takes over (3) Dan Snyder Owner/Coach (4) Snyder announces he's sold the team to a Saudi Arabian prince (5) Snyder gets assassinated by an irate Native American during the introduction of Shanny (6) Snyder gets a pie in the face from an irate season ticket holder (7) Jim Zorn gets arrested while streaking at the press conference (8) Vince Lombardi Jr. named head coach (9) John Riggins named head coach

Posted by: randysbailin | January 4, 2010 7:22 PM | Report abuse

Once again, no African-American coaching candidate even gets a sniff at this job. Snyder will pay a fine or give up a draft pick so he can get HIS GUY. THE GUY in the NFL is never one of color, no matter what we prove, and no matter how mediocre THE GUY is. Keep your place in line, Mr. Frazier. Someday, you'll be free.

I know it is easy to be negative after what we have seen the past 10 years under rule of the Danny BUT I have to say he has never seen the fanbase as pissed as we have been all season. Him letting go of Vinny and hiring a GM for the first time at least gives me a glimmer of hope. I mean it can't get any worse than Snyderatto had been doing the past decade.

I would also rather have a coach who has at least won a Super Bowl than one who thinks our colors are the maroon and black. Maybe finally change is coming. I think if we don't draft an O-lineman we can expect more of the same.

I wonder whether anybody has reviewed Coach Mike Shanahan's win-loss record over the past six years. The past three years he went 24-24 out of 48 games.

However, the three years prior to that his record was better 33-15. He hasn't been to the super bowl since 1998. Out of 13 years he has been to the playoffs seven times. Three times out-of-seven he lost in the wild-card games and lost two divisional championship games.

That proves he is better than Zorn. Is he the best coach for the job based on his past record especially within the least six to 10 years?

Oh boy, Bucky Beaver has landed at Dulles...8 & 8 here we come. I wonder how long it will take to for him to bring Jake the Fake out of retirement. Shanahan didn't do much after he won with Elway. He did sucker the Redskins on 2 trades Bailey for Portis and a second...we should have got the 2nd. Then trading up to pick Campbell. I wonder who will be dumb enough to fall for deals like that since he now WORKS for Snyder. Maybe he can sucker someone into taking Snyder...we can even throw in Vinny the pimp

Here we go again.
2000 again. Or it it 2001? Or 2003? Or 2005? Or 2008? A new coach in DC, whether Nationals, Redskins or Wizards. LOL

NY Giants beat Dallas twice.
Dallas beat Philly twice.
Philly beat NY Giants twice.
Who all beat the Redskins twice.

Historically, Redskins have losing records by far against the Giants and Cowboys. By a mile of at least 20+ games. Only a winning record against Philly at time, who is in a McNabb annual playoff zone.

So welcome to DC Shanahan. Hope you brought Elway with ya. Cause Gibbs came back without the Hoggs + Smurfs + Posse + Fun Bunch + Manley/Mann + Joe/Doug/Mark etc... and lost more games than he won.

Spurrier came here without the superior talent advantage he had in Florida. And lost.

Norv came here without Aikman, Irvin, Emmitt, Haley, Norton, Maryland, Washington, Woodson, Harper, Novacheck and a big talented O line. And lost.

Wish I felt better about this. I was hopeful when Turner/Spurrier/Gibbs were hired/rehired. ALL of them did better without Snyder as the owner, either at DC or elsewhere. Shanahan has proven himself, but Snyder-Gollum is too toxic. Been a fan since 1972, but our emperor has no brains, he does not deserve to be the owner. I know, life is not fair. Best wishes to you, Mr. Shanahan.

with Shanahan as Coach/GM/Prez, post Elway, 10yrs, 1 playoff win, no playoffs in last 3 years. Ego size of state. Good riddance. He should be able to find a 35k SF house to march his CO crib in DC easy enough.

The problem with the Redskins organization is consistency. Look at the eagles and such.

Now that Shanahan is here and if shanahan was smart he would get rid of some of the slacking a** players. My first move would be to get rid of Portis and get that new cat that got moved to first offense. However if portis loses some weight then I say stay but otherwise get ya whining butt outta here. Play some darn ball.
