Shanahan lands at Dulles

Updated at 3:48 p.m.

The unveiling of Mike Shanahan as the Redskins' new head coach could be imminent. On the same day that Jim Zorn was relieved of his head coaching duties, Shanahan arrived in Washington, where he's expected to conclude negotiations with the Redskins to fill their coaching vacancy.

Owner Daniel Snyder's plane departed Washington earlier this morning, just a couple of hours after General Manager Bruce Allen fired Zorn, and returned to Dulles International around 3 o'clock this afternoon with Shanahan -- long coveted by Snyder -- in tow.

Snyder's jet was spotted on the runway by Post reporter Zach Berman before quickly disappearing into a private hangar. NBC4's Dan Hellie found Shanahan at the airport, but the former Denver coach declined to comment. Hellie said he asked Shanahan if he'd like to talk. "No, not right now," Shanahan responded to Hellie.

Shanahan went from plane to car to short order and was whisked away to an unknown destination.

Allen said at today's news conference that he had no timetable for replacing Zorn, but promised that the search would be an aggressive one.

Citing an unnamed source, the Associated Press also reported that Allen and Shanahan spoke on the phone early this morning. Many in the organization and across the league have said for weeks that the hiring of Shanahan was inevitable. The Redskins' lost their
season finale, 23-20 Sunday, fired Zorn shortly after returning to Ashburn, making Shanahan's hiring imminent.

League sources say Shanahan has been quietly assembling a coaching staff for weeks and a major overhaul is expected.

Shanahan was fired as Denver head coach following the 2008 season and spent much of 2009 hearing his name attached to several head coaching jobs. But his options appeared to dry up quickly, according to sources. Though he interviewed for a position with the Buffalo Bills, and privately expressed interest in potentially joining the Dallas
Cowboys and Chicago Bears, those organizations were not interested in him, according to sources. If Shanahan is hired, as expected, he'd become the team's seventh head coach under Snyder -- and likely the league's highest-paid.

No way the Bengals D is superior to the Skins as far as talent wise. Zimmer has taken a bunch of no names and made them overachieve. Nothing that the Bengals have compare to the Skins D line or Fletcher. He'd be salivating at having a chance to utilize Orakpo, Carter, and Haynesworth

Posted by: ga8085 | January 4, 2010 3:35 PM

Have you watched a Bengals game??

The combo of Janathon Joseph and Leon HAll ARR WWWWAAAAYYY better than CR22 and DHall. Their LBs are WWWAAAYYY Better. And their secondary is a wash. (They have Roy Williams and we have his equivalent in LAndry).

Or front might be better than theirs, but that's about it....

I am guessing he is not catching a Wizard's game as is often the tactic...

Maybe a Caps' game? And then an introductory conference or vice versa.

This is a terrific hiring. If you like Zorn or not, it cannot be argued that Shanahan is a far superior coach.

Although most might say that you'll believe it when you see it, I think Snyder has handed control to Allen, and will let football people do their job. Just my gut feeling.

CBs are part of the secondary, no?

How can you say their LBs are WWWWAAAAYYYY better?

We have Orakpo (Pro-Bowl), Fletchter (should be a PB player), And Rocky 52 - who has played lights out...

Our front four is much better than their front four...

They had none, zero, nada, pro-bowlers - none. Even we had one.

So essentially the comparison is made to CR22 and DH23 and their two.

Posted by: skinsfaninWI | January 4, 2010 3:49 PM | Report abuse

This is a common misconception. Just because you are more familiar with the big names on our team, doesn't mean that other teams don't have just as much or more talent. It's about all 11 guys, not just a couple great players.

There are holes on our defense that we've hashed out all season, there's no way you can definitively add up all the talent on our defense and say it's better than the Bengals.

Posted by: REXskins | January 4, 2010 3:39 PM | Report abuse

I'm basing that statement off of watching them on HBO. The coaches even stated that the Defense didn't have alot of talent on one episode (I think directly to the players) and that they would have to make up for it with hard work and sound football. Go back and watch the show, its in there, I guarantee

tough schedule next year

NFC-E = Dallas, Philly, NYG
NFC-N = Minn, GB, Chi, Det
AFC-S = Indy, Hous, Tenn, Jax
x2 = TB, St.L

7-9 or 8-8 st best

Posted by: noonefromtampa | January 4, 2010 3:53 PM | Report abuse

This is fantastic, everybody go to Morton's and get the deal done!!!!! Honestly, look at the league, Shanahan is a top 5 coach in the league and the only other one available is Cowher who apparently wants to wait another year http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2010/01/04/report-cowher-is-inclined-to-wait-another-year/
so could we gamble and get the "young up and comer".....sure, but after having just tried that, I'm with Snyder on this one, lets get the best resume available and pair him with a experienced GM. If this goes down and Snyder does stay out of things going forward its a great day for the Skins. Argue over the semantics if you want to, but you can't argue that Shanahan/Allen in charge without Snyder meddling is about as good a situation as we could have dreamed about a year ago.

I'm disgusted by the ongoing drama and clandestine meetings, secret negotiations, etc. that Synder and his henchmen perpetrate. THIS is the problem...it's all about the surprise/splash.

Why not just have him arrive in town for an interview without the drama? What would be so bad about that? Redskins fans (and I'm teetering on the edge after 40 years) are SO gullible...we never learn our lesson, do we? Always getting jerked around, winning the offseason (notice that now Dan can't wait even one day to "win" the offseason)? This organization is a joke the way the do things - and until they act like other, professional sports franchises - I'm not buying in and neither should anyone else.

What a joke. So what exactly has changed? NOTHING. $nyder has just hired another puppet to do his bidding. Another big name splash signing. It's been no secret that $nyder has been after Shannahan well before Bruce Allen came in to town. So $nyder is going to let his GM call the shots? Yeah, pretty much.

All of you people that think this changes everything and that the Skins are a different organization today because Mike Shannahan is here to save the day are just dogs eating Dan $nyder's vomit.

NOTHING has changed. $nyder wants a toy, and then hires a lap dog to rubber stamp it.

THE PROBLEM IS THERE IS NO REAL GM CALLING THE SHOTS, and this hiring shows that $nyder is still the same loser, punk that has taken a dump over DC's beloved franchise.

I wonder if those of you that continue to buy Redskins products and keep going to these games can riddle me this - what is it about Dan $nyder's vomit that tastes so good?

The Skins wouldn't fire Zorn and hire Shanahan on the same day: no reason to. A savvy organization will leave a second day for the separate announcement, so that it gets its own media cycle. This is a two-day story, minimum.

What an organization - and not in a good way. The NEXT Savior is in town.

I remember when it was George allen, who brought respectability and one Super Bowl loss. Before his group of 50 year olds ended the 1970's without a Lombardi trophy.

I remember when it was Norv the Savior, who had won 2 Lombardi trophies with Aikman, Emmitt, Irvin, an offenive line that was the best be4 Denver's and after the Hoggs. With Novachek, alvin Harper and the Moose. But Norv came to DC alone, without them - thus lost.

I remember Marty was going to create discipline, the discipline that Norv could not create (but has in San Diego). 8-8.

I remember when Spurrier came here and the excitement here! Funny, he came here with his SEC playbook, but without the talent advantage he had in Florida. And lost.

I remember when Gibbs returned. Seemed like the return of Jesus. Returned them to the playoffs, won a couple of January games, but ZERO NFC East titles. And lost more games than he won. And left the titanic be4 it sank. Zorn got on the sinking ship.

Now Shanahan, who inherited Elway, made them a better team (see Gruden and Switzer and Seifert who all inherited championship teams and did nothing with their own teams). Without Elway, this guy won ONE playoff game.

So what's the fuss? Allen too has around a 500 record as GM. So Jerry and Jimmy they're not.

I'm sure this has nothing to do with the defensive scheme and everything to do with the level of talent on the team.

The Redskins could have all the talent in the world, but that doesn't mean anything if it isn't used right.

Fred Davis' talent had nothing to do with why he wasn't getting snaps when Cooley was healthy.

Our off posted 17 ppg with our defense yielding 18.

In short our offense let us down and other than total yards per game we stack up favorably to the Bangles...

Our division has two 11 game winners and 34 total wins to the Bangles 33 wins and they only winning 10.

But these are just facts - they get in the way.

I thought the comparison was Def to Def not other ridiculous "which stadium has better grass" or the like kind of evidence.

IMHO, WaPo usually gets beat to the punch by ESPN because they are better at rewarding snitches... Think about it: Where is an athlete with marginal literary talents more likely to get a gig after his playing career: WaPo? or ESPN?

Do the math: Reporters for ESPN and FOX are good at getting players and coaches to leak info because they have more incentive for the disgruntled whistleblowers than The Post, who is more concerned about getting it RIGHT than getting it FIRST.

So, stop complaining about Reid when he relays a report by ESPN or FOX. To me, The Post is merely validating it.

Call me Thomas, but I'll believe that change is happening when I see it! So far it looks like the same old ballgame to me.

Also, I'm concerned that Shanny's last several years in Denver were garbage, and that Denver was the another Buffalo when it came to winning Super Bowls before Elway finally mannaged a couple of wins. And Bruce Allen did nothing in Tampa Bay ... he won with a team he inherited, went downhill from there, and was fired. And what does "having the Redskins in his blood" have to do with anything? I'm nervous.

I hope Allen infuses the pure utter hatred of the despised franchise that's located in Dallas. When Deion was here, he expressed shock that none of the players were hyped up to play against Dallas. He also stated how hyped up players were when was at Dallas and they were preparing for the Redskins.

I want the smack talk back...from both sides. I remember at age 10 my parents quickly ushering me past a Dallas fan getting his Danny White jersey torn off his body in the parking lot of RFK and a few years later the brick through the windshield of some Dallas fan who had a Dallas bumper sticker...ahh the fabulous atmosphere of N.E. DC!

I want that atmosphere back.. .maybe not the Dallas fans being disrobed by mobs, but on the fence about the bricks through the windshields though. HAIL!

Umm..so Dhani Jones brings veteran leadership but LFB is getting old? That's a contradiction if I've ever seen one. How old is Jones? Not too much younger then LFB I bet. Maulaga will be very good, Rivers hasn't shown me that much to say he'll be any better then McIntosh. Once again, as an overall group, the LB's aren't that much better then the Skins. The only clear advantage the Bengals have is their CB's and that's it. They have less talent then the Skins but are coached better and make less mental errors.

I kinda think the same thing... get a young OC or DC who is fresh and looking to make his mark. But, I've looked through the list of current OCs and DCs and don't see much to get excited about. Don't see a youngish Gibbs-like OC. Shanny seems like the best option.

Eddie Royal
Peyton Hillis

That's not bad drafting in my book 11 current starters on their team were drafted by Shanny from 04 to 08, on the Skins from that same time period?
DT11 (totally out shined so far in his career by Royal and Marshall)
Cooley/Davis
JC
Dockery
Gholston
Rocky Mac
Rogers
Landry
Doughty/Horton/Moore

Over that same time period the Broncos had a better record as well. Orakpo doesn't make the list, he was an 09 pick and Shanny wasn't picking in 09.

I couldn't agree more. Sounds like this hiring is more based on the fact that Snyder is buddies with Shanahan, and on Shanahan's resume, than on any potential great future with him as head coach of the Redskins.

Until I see tangible results on the field, I'm going to view this as typical Snyder false hype.

"...trade down, trade down, trade down..."

This is posted on every blog featuring the witless thoughts of a fanbase whose team is not in the playoffs.

Like ours.

I like phrases like, "Trade a future pick to get more high picks."

I'd give up the 1st rounder in '11 if it yielded another 2nd rounder.

That gives 3 picks in rounds 1-2.

We need top round guys, the kind of offensive linemen guys that become pro bowlers.

Two tackles and a right guard would satisfy as much as a quarterback, tackle, guard.

The redskins don't have a true, dynamic offensive threat or the players to block for one should he be acquired.

Jason Campbell? Clinton Portis?: Shanny will wave good bye to them and all the promise they once held as redskins.

Santana Moss and Chris Cooley might want to amp up their games as a big name coach wants his own young'ns to make stars out of.

And don't put me to sleep with chatter about sacrificing the future.

Our sorry recent past and present justify creativity of any sort when you can't beat another team's second teamers.

My statement makes absolute sense. A GM is suppossed to go out there and interview candidates for the head coaching vacancy and make the best choice for the team. It's been no secret that $nyder has been after Shannahan for MONTHS, well before Bruce Allen was even named GM.

So it's business as usual. Dan $nyder sticks his fist up another "executive" backside and tells said sock puppet to go out and do his bidding. All the Allen hiring confirms is that Dan $nyder is trying to buff the tird that is his same old tired, failed business practice.

But hey, my friend. If you like the taste, keep lapping it up!!

Just watch. Two, three years from now, we'll be right back at it.

Rocky 52 - has 290 tackles over 4 year and averages 14.4 games played. Thats 4 more games and 30 more tackles than the "truth"

Orakpo - has 50 tackles and 11 sacks - on par with Ray.

LFB has 1480 tackles in 12 years (2 more than Dahani) but 700 more tackles and is on his 3rd team as well.

So however you measure - the Skins - stack up just fine if not well above the Bangle's "Truth" team...

I have to admit I'm really suprised at all of the posters completely trashing the hiring of B Allen and Shannahan. Shannahan has a proven track record, especially when it comes to developing O lines, RB's and running games. We finally have a real GM, which is the main thing that most of us have been demanding for years. If the attitude is that even if Snyder hires the reincarnation of Vince Lombardi, he will just be a Snyder "lapdog", then we might as well all just forget about the Skins until Snyder either sells the team or dies.

Posted by: mrapier1 | January 4, 2010 4:21 PM | Report abuse

Who'd you have in mind?

How Spagnulo do with the Rams? How bout Raheem Morris in Tampa? Jim Schwartz in Detroit?

Knowledge and experience count, and this team needs BOTH in a big way.

I'd take an experienced SB winning head coach over an "up and coming -- next great thing".

you fools dont know talent...letting CJ SPILLER past in the draft will be a huge mistake..Oline needs to be addressed but we cannot pass on CJ Spiller at pick number 4!!! im telling you..watch the kid play, he will be up there with ap and chris johnson

If the skins had an average oline, consistant wr's and was allowed to call audibles

Campbell would not be the problem.

Take a look at how many times Shanahan got the Broncos in the playoffs after Elway left. Or better yet, how many playoff games he won after Elway left. BTW - he was 24-24 the last 3 years in Denver. Get used to mediocrity!

Posted by: BroncoDano | January 4, 2010 4:30 PM | Report abuse

in 15 years of coaching, how many playoff games has belichick won w/out brady. answer = 1

in 9 years of coaching, how many playoff games did jimmy johnson win w/out aikman. answer = 0 (even w/ marino)

how many playoff games did walsh win without montana. answer = 0.

you can play this game all day long. how many super bowls did reeves win with elway?

not saying shanny is the best or that i like the move, but point this fact out is irrelevant. guys got 2 rings. lots of coaches w/ better qb's have none. makes you appreciate what guys like gibbs and parcells were able to do with no hall of fame QB's.

Coaching families are a fact of life, I mean I respect the ones that end up going out to many different teams, Kevin Gilbrides son is the WR coach at Temple, tells you something about his character.

velo, if you're that upset about it, 31 other teams to follow.....the time to act is now...

kenton, try researching who curt shanahan is, and then get back to us.....

I'm excited about this. Shanahan is a proven winner with an axe to grind. I'm still displeased with Danny's despicable business practices and rampant disrespect for his customers, but at least the team should improve in the coming years.

Posted by: Dellis2 | January 4, 2010 4:42 PM | Report abuse

And Shanahan would become the leagues highest paid coach? Typical Snyder. Spend more than somebody else would to get a big name. That means the big name is worth more. Check the list of worthless free agents he paid obscene salaries. Same thing can happen with coaches.

Posted by: jlhare1 | January 4, 2010 4:37 PM |

Shannahan is already one of the leagues highest paid coaches he is set to make 7mil a year for the next 2 years for doing nothing.

Coaches salaries don't effect the salary cap so why do you car e how much money he gets paid?

Posted by: Flounder21 | January 4, 2010 4:42 PM | Report abuse

LMAO. Wipe the foam off your mouth and pay close attention. Shanahan was in the works - and so was Allen. You don't think all of this was discussed well in advance between the three of them, given they way this is going down?

You act as if Allen was an impulse hire, while Shanahan was a months in advance plan. Both of these guys were talking to DS for a while now.

So no, your definition doesn't make sense. What makes sense is that you're so caught up in your hatred of the owner that you can't see right side up anymore.

Give Shanahan a chance. He is better than what we had. Allen is better than Cerrato. At least we have a chance to be better. The draft should be exciting for the fans this year. Hope we make the right picks.

Let's just hope Shanahan told Snyder to pack up his padded practice field chair and to stick it in his butt.
If Snyder shows up and plants his butt in that chair next year, we're toast.

Peyton Hillis

That's not bad drafting in my book 11 current starters on their team were drafted by Shanny from 04 to 08, on the Skins from that same time period?
____________
First, it was Darrent Williams, and in case you didn't hear, he was killed 2 years ago. Foxworth was never a starter in Denver, and Hillis only started a few games last year when every other RB got hurt.
You want to hear some of his good 1st rounders?
Marcus Nash
Willie Middlebrooks
Ashlie Lelie
Jarvis Moss

Yeah, I know you probably haven't heard of them before. Nobody has heard from them since either...

The classlessness and deception of the Redskin organization continues. First, they fire Jim Zorn in the middle of the night. Then, not 4 hours ago, Bruce Allen tells the public that there is no time table to hire a head coach.

Four hours later, Shanahan is landing at Dulles. Lil Danny is still pulling the strings, the proof is in the pudding.

Beantown, if you keep following and $nyder keeps printing money with folks that fall for this stupidity year in and year out, nothing will change. I know there are 31 other teams, but having been born in DC, I will continue to root for the Skins.

For me, the Burgundy Revolution is still in force until $nyder either sells or dies or changes his ways. Which is hire a competent GM and let him make ALL the decisions. Why is the time NOW? Because Shannahan might get away to another team? LET HIM!!! Why not let Allen use his alleged football expertise to go out there and scout for a young up and coming coach with a proven track record? What is SOOOOO great about Shannahan that we have to act now? Really, the answer is that what $nyder wants, $nyder gets, and that, my friend is the problem.

In the meantime, I will continue not to go to games, purchase anymore Redskins's products or patronize any business that is the official partner of the Washington Redskins.

Aren't you guys sick and tired of the same garbage? Aren't you tired of falling for the same thing, year in and year out?

The only way this will change is to hit $nyder in the wallet. He's two years younger than me so the odds of me seeing the Redskins under different ownership won't happen. But until then, I'll just root from the couch.

ESPN reported that the Skins are projected to select a QB with the 4th pick. If so, then Shanahan will be Zorn 2.0

And how well do ESPN's "projections" from the day after the end of the regular season track with actual selections over the years. Particularly for teams who haven't put their management team together yet. This is only about a notch better than a fake PFT post.
