Kerzon,

The goal in the top 3-4 rounds is to draft players who will become starters - maybe in the 1st year, or maybe in the 2nd or 3rd years. Yes, drafting a quality CB this year is critical, mainly because you need a replacement for Springs in 2009. Maybe you also need a replacement for Smoot in 2010. The jury is out on Carlos, so maybe a replacement will be needed there also. So the CB drafted in 2008 has to be a future starter - no Mike Rumphs can be selected. The same is true for DE, where Daniels is about done. We need a big body DE to replace Daniels on every down, handling the run and making the occasional sack. Speed rushers need not apply. Wide receivers and solid interior lineman are important, but you can create patchwork solutions if necessary at those spots. Without Daniels and Springs in 2007, it would have been ugly. Draft their replacements first then, even if they don't start immediately.

Hold up... that means we have to wait almost two months before getting any inkling as to how Soup and the gang are picking up Zorn's O... hmm... crud.

The idea of taking less for the pick would benefit us bc we could add the 2nd and 3rd round talent at a lower price while injecting the team with more youth for the future.

Posted by: rbruce | March 13, 2008 01:43 PM

I think you have a lot of people who would agree with you on this, rbruce. If the Redskins get an offer to trade down and their 1st round graded players are off the board, you can probably expect this to happen. Not paying 1st round money this year would be a good thing, and having an extra 1st day pick would be a plus.

Posted by: tafka | March 13, 2008 2:02 PM | Report abuse

taf/bruce, oh yeah, I'll take two, number 2 picks, and three number 3 picks over what we have now.

That would be a virtual coup for the team.

Posted by: tafka | March 13, 2008 2:08 PM | Report abuse

Call me crazy, but what about packaging Betts, our #1, and the compensatory pick (supposedly a 3rd) to move up and get an elite pass rusher. Gholston maybe, or even get Glenn Dorsey. It would cost you a pick you didnt have to begin with and a guy that hardly plays for you.

Tafka,

I think we are saying the same thing. Just no more busts.

I will start from the position that Vinny will select us some good players that can contribute for a long time. If not, then there is plenty of time to be negative about him. Now is not the time.

Posted by: Redcoat | March 13, 2008 2:21 PM | Report abuse

zf, that move is just foolish.

First, if you trade Betts, you WEAKEN, what is a strength, which is the RB's on the team. And in order to compensate, you now have to spend a pick on a player to make up for losing Betts. 1 step forward, 3 steps backwards.

The Redskins FINALLY have somewhat of a full compliment of picks. They need to utilize EVERY ONE of them.

Posted by: gregmarino88 | March 13, 2008 2:21 PM | Report abuse

zjfr2 - i actually wouldn't mind doing that, but only if it were for 1 of 2 players: jake long or chris long. gholston wouldn't really fit a 4-3 well, and there are no other truly elite prospects than the two mentioned before (mcfadden is, but there's no need for mcfadden with portis already lining up in the backfield). however, i don't think the 21st pick, a third rounder, and betts would be nearly enough to move up that high anyway.

Posted by: psps23 | March 13, 2008 2:22 PM | Report abuse

It is a NFL rule - compensatory picks cannot be traded.

college and pro's are two different levels. i don't think gholston could get away with consistently holding up against the run at 266 lbs as a down lineman. especially with carter on the opposite side, we would be pounded against the run.

oops, mistake by me, just read that gholston is actually 255 on espn.com. even more lightweight. i'm not trying to knock gholston, i think he'll be a fine player, just not for our system, or at least good enough worth trading up for. he'd be like a merriman/suggs type guy, rather than the bigger, stronger end that we need. he COULD be good for a 4-3, but not if we line him and Carter opposite each other on an every down basis. only my opinion.

Vernon Gholston was measured at 6'3, 266 at the Combine last month. Here is how he compares to other notable names.

Phillip Daniels - 6'5, 276
Michael Strahan - 6'5, 255
Osi Umenyiora - 6'3, 261
Andre Carter - 6'4, 252
Patrick Kerney - 6'5, 272

Chris Long - 6'3, 272
Phillip Merling - 6'4, 276
Derrick Harvey - 6'5, 271
Lawrence Jackson - 6'4, 271

I don't think it is wise to trade up to get him either. But he definitely has the size/skills to play DE in a 4-3.

So that would be Samuels, Portis, Fletcher, Cooley, Landry, and Springs.

That would net us Jake Long, Chris Long, Vernon Gholston, Darren McFadden, Glenn Dorsey, and a top 6 pick to deal for more picks.

I don't want Zorn designing new uniforms. It would like most black and maroon with yellow highlights. (Think about the Seahawks ugly unis with mostly dark colors and those lime green highlights.) Keep Zorn working on the playbook and let someone else do the uniform. (Like maybe our fashion experts, Portis and Cooley.)

2 DEs, 1 DT, 1 RB, 1 OT, alex.

Posted by: tafka | March 13, 2008 3:03 PM | Report abuse

fair enough tafka, i could be wrong. i was under the impression he was an undersized lineman, more suitable for the 3-4 olb. i read he was 6'3 255lbs on espn, which would put him right around where andre carter is. carter himself is undersized, so having both on the line at the same time could be hell for QBs, but gold for RBs.

FYI

Zorn on Hackett

David Elfin caught up with Jim Zorn today to discuss D.J. Hackett:

"This will all be up to him," Zorn said of Hackett, who declined comment. "We're not going to risk it all to try to pay him. The financial package has to work. But if we have a chance to get him, we'd like to have him. He's got two other teams plus Seattle that wants to match [his contract offers]."

"I tried to instigate this a little bit," said Zorn, a Seahawks assistant during Hackett's four seasons in Seattle. "Nobody was bringing him anywhere. I said, 'Let's try to get him out here.' We brought him out here and now [it's like] 'Oh, they're interested? Let's see if we're interested.' "

"When you run slants and things like that, you like to be big enough to where you can take a pounding," Zorn said. "[When] you're running inside on curl routes and crossing routes, you like to have a bigger target. And in the red zone when we're going for the end zone, you like to have a target that you can throw to. D.J. fits that bill."

"We've got a chance [to sign Hackett], but it's really a one in four chance right now," Zorn said.

We need the CB available hopefully DRC. The Guard position is thin. We need to get a Good G/C that could provide depth. We need get a good tackle (Duan Brown for Virginia Tech he plays RT and TE. he is a good for goal line situation.)he will free up Alexander Lorenzo so he can play his position DT and help move Stephon Heyer to LT position.)
WE need a 2 DE for depth. ILB possibly Tavares Gooden. a 3rd string QB.
Compensatory picks WR or another Tackle.

Posted by: patricklugo363 | March 13, 2008 3:09 PM | Report abuse

I agree with most of what you are saying, psps. The Redskins need a replacement for Phillip Daniels, and another DE of Andre Carter's size won't be good enough. Merling's size and skill set is the best fit, as he played Left DE in college, and is a strong run defender. Gholston played mostly on the right side, like Carter. I'm not convinced that Gholston will be the next Adalius Thomas, but I think he will make someone a fine Right DE in a 4-3.

HACKETT GETS OFFER FROM 'SKINS
Posted by Mike Florio on March 13, 2008, 4:50 p.m.
Seahawks receiver D.J. Hackett visited the Redskins, got an offer, and didn't accept it.

According to the Washington Times, Hackett will explore other options before making a decision.

"This will all be up to him," coach Jim Zorn told David Elfin of the Washington Times. "We're not going to risk it all to try to pay him. The financial package has to work. But if we have a chance to get him, we'd like to have him. He's got two other teams plus Seattle that wants to match [his contract offers]."

It's a dramatic change in approach by the Redskins to free agency. In the past, the 'Skins would close the deal quickly and decisively, usually by overpaying via a multi-year contract that was destined to be terminated in a couple of years.

Indeed, Hackett was the first free-agent that the 'Skins hosted this year. They previously have re-signed two of their own free agents -- quarterback Todd Collins and running back Rock Cartwright . . . Cartwright!

Hackett will visit the Panthers and the Buccaneers. The Seahawks also have an interest in bringing him back.

JONES OUT IN MOTOWN
Posted by Mike Florio on March 13, 2008, 4:02 p.m.
We've gotten confirmation from another source that running back Kevin Jones has been informed by the Detroit Lions that he will be released.

It's not known whether the move has been made official.

Jones was a first-round pick of the Lions in 2004. A serious foot injury suffered during the 2006 season marred much of the 2007 campaign for him, and we're told that there was concern that he might not be healthy for the start of the 2007 regular season.

The only other running backs currently on the roster are Brian Calhoun, Aveion Cason, and Tatum Bell.
