Mitchell has head-coaching offer from Southern

While the future of just about every member of the Redskins' coaching staff will likely be up in the air following Sunday's game in San Diego, running backs coach Stump Mitchell has an offer on the table.

Southern University in Baton Rouge, La., has offered Mitchell its head coaching position, according to a news release from the school.

The terms of a contract have not been worked out and the school didn't expect to make any final announcement until after the Redskins conclude their season Sunday against the Chargers.

"Stump Mitchell's 21 years in the NFL, 10 as a player and 11 years as an assistant coach, combined with his head coaching experience, will bring a wealth of diverse knowledge to our football program," Greg LaFleur, Southern's athletics director, said in the news release.

Mitchell told Joseph White of the Associated Press today that he'll make a decision after the season is concluded, but the quotes in today's news release from Southern sure sounded like the school was welcoming its new coach on board.

"I am very excited to have Lyvonia 'Stump' Mitchell joining the Jaguar Nation as our 17th head football coach. I am confident that he will help us bring the fans back to A.W. Mumford Stadium and that he will help us achieve our goal of strengthening the relationship between SUBR and the community surrounding the campus", said Dr. Kofi Lomotey, the school's chancellor.

And this, from Dr. Kassie Freeman, interim president of the Southern University System: "We anticipate Coach Mitchell joining the Jaguar Nation and we have the utmost confidence in his ability to lead our football program. Being a former student athlete, Coach Mitchell understands that our goal is to develop our team to their greatest
potential on and off the field," said Freeman said. "We are also very proud of the hard work and dedication of our Board Chairman, Chancellor, and Athletic Director during the search process. This is indicative of their commitment to ensuring the success of our athletic programs, along with working collaboratively to make the best decision
for our great institution."

Mitchell was one of head coach Jim Zorn's few coaching hires. He'd previously worked with Zorn on the Seattle Seahawks' staff and also served as head coach at Morgan State from 1996-97.

How does the Rooney rule work in the NCAA? Did Southern have to interview a fat white guy before they could make the offer to the Stumpster?

Stump went 8-24 as head coach at Morgan State. Congratulations to him for landing the Southern job -- good program and great landing spot after what he's been through here for the last two years.

Good for "Lyvonia". His miserable stint here aside, I'm always glad to see someone of color land a head coaching gig, especially in the college ranks. Hopefully, he takes that ass-clown "Z-Man" with him.

Who cares. Good for Stump, though. Maybe he needs a QB coach. Zorn will need a new gig about 9:05 Monay morning.

Zorn will be released from his duties on Friday (8th) between 10 and 11 ET.

Good for Stump. If he's smart he will change his phone # to avoid any calls from the rest of the soon to be unemployed coaching staff.

The press conference for the new hire will be scheduled right after lunch.

League, that's hilarious! I hope that non-Black candidates were part of the process but I doubt it...
But of 582 NCAA head football coaches just 23 are minorities (not all black & including HBCU's). Now that's a real joke.

I don't get the hostility over the Rooney Rule. Just because they have to interview a minority doesn't mean that a team is obligated to hire him as the coach.

Go Lyvonia and run as fast as you can to that team! You can do it and I know that you will be a good head coach for them! Happy new year to you!

Congrats to Stump. Unlike a bunch of the coaches, sounds like he gets to skip a trip to the unemployment line.

Congrats to Stump, but I can't say he exactly earned a fancy watch as recognition for his service to the Redskins. Maybe a fancy pen. Yeah, that feels right, a nice pen.

Perhaps with a nice pen holder in the shape of a stump:

League-Source, that was a good one up there :)

"Did Southern have to interview a fat white guy before they could make the offer to the Stumpster?"

I hope so.

The 6' 2" 245 fit black man in me sympathizes with the plight of downtrodden, discriminated against white dudes.

Everybody thinks they have good credit.

Everybody laughs when they try to dance to r and b music.

Everybody mocks their attempts at saying, "Wazzup!" at the bar.

People think they don't have erectile dysfunction problems.

Whenever I watch COPS, I shake my head in disgust when various police officers stop such men as they try drive home drunk without spilling a beer in the car.

Then there are the prostitution stings where white men get harassed for helping some crack hoe earn her next hit.

Can't the police see middle aged fat white guys have a history of shame and abuse not unlike that of the black or hispanic man?

Things are so bad for most bald fat white dudes that when my ignorant and uninformed children see them, they shout, "Look dad, it's Dick Chaney!"

"No," I tell them. "That's former President Bush."

"I know they all look alike."

Yes: things are that bad.

And I'm sorry for it.

In fact all us middle aged dudes should get together on Sunday afternoons in the Fall to share our pain.

sad but true. I grew up on the Skins. Best scenario is a loss.
I dont look at it as a loss for my team.. But a loss for an organization called "Snyder Media".

Whoever had the idea to cut time into the slices we call years, was a clever person. He industrialized hope, letting hope carry us even at the limit of exhaustion.

Twelve months is enough for any human being to be worn down and start to give up.

But here comes the miracle of renovation when everything starts afresh, with a new number and renewed belief that from now on everything will be different.

Happy New Year Redskin Nation…

Let him go. He was not going to be around next year. Zorn and crew better start accepting the first offers they get, because Shanahan will clean the house. I don't expect anyone to hang around form the trainer down to the secondary coach. Stump, thanks for the memories - though most of them were not worth recollecting...

Best case scenario is that we kick ol' mumble mouth up one side and down the other.

I do wish our Dauphine took advantage of this being his last game to relabel 'Burgundy and Gold Daily' as 'Maroon and Black Zorny'.
Inappropriate? Possibly.
Funny? Definitely.

It's great how people here are talking about racism and the Rooney Rule. Have you forgotten what the mascot for the Washington Redskins is? That's right, a Native American. If It was a black guy, or a hispanic, or an Asian, everyone would go berserk. But who cares about a Native American, right?

Wrong. No, its horribly sickening. Native Americans have been treated far worse than any minority group in American History. Get a life...

I don't know...I'm willing to bet the Japanese Americans (and non-Japanese Americans who just "looked" Japanese) who were rounded up and stuck in internment camps MIGHT just disagree with your point...

Thanks guys. We need to earmark a few topics to kill off the dark days between the supplemental combine and the pre-organized team activities. We can't afford to resolve this race issue now, when Zorn is still on the job. That would be foolish and come back to bite us later, like a squandered time out.

Posted by: SMACK1 | January 1, 2010 2:10 AM | Report abuse

Dang, SMACK, I had completely forgotten about the POTAs. We in the Portland contingent have this laser focus on our ODAs and tend to stray from the NFL's official calendar.

Here's to having plenty of good excuses to imbibe mass quantities in 2010...

Let's not forget the Hittites, Babylonians, Sumerians, Assyrians, Persians, Armenians, etc.

Some group has always taken advantage of another one for about the last 9,000 years of human existense. Right? No, but hopefully we as a people have evolved.

Now let's go and lock up that #4 or #5 pick.

Maybe they should interview an Apache Indian...or a member of another tribe? They are, after all, the Redskins Also, the rule states a minority candidate must be interviewed. Does it say he/she has to have football experience? Just asking..as I have not heard this area discussed.

Getting back to the subject at hand, Stump Mitchell deserves to show his outstanding talent as a coach, especially as a head coach. He has excelled with running backs in his past, and those he coaches have gone probowl. He has been a college head coach before, some students making it to NFL. With unknown job security, good he has an attractive offer to consider!

So your saying that forcing a certain ethnic group to live in a certain area is worse than taking a groups land, killing the men, raping their women, making fun of them through movies, and finally, adding them to the "honorable" position of football team mascot. Apparently you need to get an education, or, it I may quote you, "a nice set of encyclopedias"

As a Southern fan I'm disappointed in Stump Mitchell's choice as head coach (the will be better off with the outgoing Pete Richardson). He was a poor recruiter at Morgan State and had awful teams. If anything, I see this as a setback for the Jaguars. They can expect to lose to Grambling consistently. Hopefully, Mitchell will prove me wrong but I just don't see it.
