Moss Fined $5,000

Jason La Canfora reports:

Redskins wide receiver Santana Moss was fined $5,000 by the NFL for a personal foul in Washington's victory Sunday over the Seahawks in Seattle, according to a source with knowledge of the situation.

His personal foul, for striking cornerback Josh Wilson on the head after a play, put the Redskins out of field goal range in the second quarter.

"I got a chance and got real aggressive with [Wilson] on a block," Moss said in a postgame interview Sunday with Comcast SportsNet. "And as I'm leaving to get away from him, he's grabbing me, grabbing me, and we're kind of exchanging words.

"And he wouldn't let go, so I did the best thing that I knew at that moment. It wasn't the best decision, but I did it, and I'm glad that we don't have to sit here and be saying that cost the game or something. I did it and I apologize about it and I moved on."

Moss finished with four receptions for 74 yards.

Is this Moss's FIRST fine as a Skin?

Posted by: Section303 | November 28, 2008 4:21 PM | Report abuse

CL, thanks for doing my work for me. According to you, he's on pace for a career mark in fumbles, to date his longest catch is 28 yards which would be his lowest of his career, and I can't find a reliable source for drops but Cooley has dropped more passes than I've ever remembered and they have been some key ones, certainly I'm not a reliable source for data, but do you remember this many drops for him ever before? and its not like he's just a little low on TD's he's got 1 through 11 games....just saying while he's still having a nice season, he hasn't been as impactful as last year or as many of his peers. There are 27 tight ends with more TD's than him and while his yardage is good, he's still not lighting up teams with only one game all season with 100 yds in a game and only two games all year over 75.

A fair fine. Glad he wasn't ejected. And glad that we were still able to get in the end zone on that drive.

A belated Happy Thanksgiving to all. Was able to read the blog yesterday, but missed my window of opportunity to post (due to family stuff). I'm sure I was missed terribly. ;-)

Nervous as a cat in a room full of rocking chairs about tomorrow. If we ever needed a win...

Hope everyone's enjoying the long weekend.

I think its fair to mention that while the dumb penalty did "put the Redskins out of field goal range", on the next play, he drew a pass interference penalty which led to a skins TD.

Posted by: tedunni1 | November 28, 2008 4:28 PM | Report abuse

"Cooley has dropped more passes than I've ever remembered and they have been some key ones,"

They are paying more attention to him than in the past. West Coast means more short passes to an h-back type player. He is it. Noting that Zorn started going more to Betts when he was in ... and except for the fumbles he has been very, very effective in the passing game. The problem is the injury has kept him out, leading to fumbles et al.

It becomes less West Coast and more Gibbs-Henning-Zorn Coast or GHZ Coast ... :) 2 "h-backs" in Betts and Cooley much like Gibbs I. 2 wide outs, (early on Skins could did not have 3 as they did when they had Monk, Sanders, and Clark. Then it was Monk and Charley Brown, Washington and Walker or Didier type. Riggins as the lone back.

Now, you have Cooley and Betts, ARE and Moss, plus Portis as the lone back. Lots of similarities, same weaknesses, same strengths.

The Betts fumble cost me $200 on Sunday. All he had to do is hold on to the ball, let Suishim kick a field goal and we cover 3 1/2 points. Besides that, he scared the hell out of everybody until the "D" saved his butt!

5 G's????Snyder should take that out of his sock and send it to the league.

As for the Cooley talk, I don't think he's having an "off" year, but he has dropped some critical 3rd downs, which stalls drives, which takes points off the board. Not all his fault, but dropped passes are killers.

Oh...and on the previous threads there was talk about Landry being trucked by Jacobs. If you go back and look at the replay, he actually held on to trip him up for the tackle. Most guys would have wiffed on the tackle.

Posted by: icetotalpackage | November 28, 2008 6:25 PM | Report abuse

This game is not going to be a blow out!

We need to:

1. Stuff running game from the start and force Manning to beat us with his arm

2. Be creative enough on offense to give JC time to throw and take some deep shots

3. No screw ups on special teams

4. Score td's in the red zone.

We can do this. I don't know about you, but I'm not ready to crown the F'n gints just yet. Be interesting to see how they play from behind(I hope).

++++Offense: More work for Kelly (5 catches, 85 yds and a TD), with above avg number of quick hitting 4 wide set plays and an occasional 5 wide(empty backfield). Force the Giants to cover and account for more receivers. Instead of play action, I look for "pass action" draws to counter the Giants rush.++++

Are you kidding? Try 9 catches for 185 and three TDs for Kelly They didn't draft him for this kind of piddling effort.

++++Moss Fined $5,000

Jason La Canfora reports++++

If anyone ever doubted that the NFL is about the bottom line, you need look no further than this. Moss took a swing and hit a defender. He probably would have missed a game instead of given a slap on the wrist except without him the ‘skins would have NO CHANCE against the G-men in a nationally televised game.

The NFL doesn’t want to hurt ratings by ruining a marquee matchup.

If it had been a Cowboy in a similar circumstance they’d have given him a bonus and made him Queen of the Aragon Ballroom.

Hey Ice, that game was 37-29. If the Giants can put up 37 without Plax and Jacobs against AZ. they can put up 30 against our "D" WITH them, and the last time we scored over 30 points was...............................................................

Posted by: vegasskinsfan | November 28, 2008 6:55 PM | Report abuse

JM, maybe its because we eeked out wins over Detroit and Seattle when yesterday teams that we may face if we make the playoffs blew them off the field and crushed them. Maybe its because we haven't played very well in a long time pretty much since Eagles game. Maybe its because for the last 7 weeks our offense has looked very pedestrian, maybe its because since a hot start, we have backed up to being a half game out of the playoffs and we have matchups the next two weeks against two of the toughest defenses in the league and we haven't looked good in a long team against blitzing defenses that can get after the passer. Maybe its because the same problems this team has had for years it still has and it feels a lot like this season is starting to slip away because of them.

The only way this changes is if this Oline suddenly remembers how to pass protect and Kelly emerges as a viable threat. That's a big and necessary "if" that we'll see if it happens.

Posted by: zjfr2 | November 28, 2008 6:58 PM | Report abuse

Conspiracy theory RI:

Isn't it fishy that all of a sudden, Macolm Kelly was healthy enough to play and even supplanted Devin Thomas as the fourth receiver? He was headed to IR, now he's healthy enough to play. I wonder if Vinny or Danny got in Zorn's ear???

Posted by: rickyroge | November 28, 2008 7:02 PM | Report abuse

that's just dumb ricky, you think an out of nowhere coach in his first year with Bill Cowher around if he tanks would not play the best players available?

Posted by: zjfr2 | November 28, 2008 7:06 PM | Report abuse

Very good analysis zjfr2!

It's as clear as day that we have talent issues on the offensive side of the ball. Kelly and Thomas haven't offered much because apparently Zorn doesn't think they're ready, but both Kelly and Thomas must be better than James Thrash. James Thrash should have never been the third receiver. So what if Thomas or Kelly run the wrong routes. As the #3 receiver, it really doesn't matter cause Cooley is the 2nd or 3rd read anyway.

On another note, I want to talk about a very underrated Redskin and that's Fred Smoot...

Smoot talks a lot of trash and is a great quote, but he's a helluva corner. Most thought he'd be a good nickel corner at best, but he tackles well, and has been beat deep very little this year. He plays with swagger as a good corner should and he's got heart. I think Smoot is an underrated CB.

JM220

Posted by: icetotalpackage | November 28, 2008 7:26 PM | Report abuse

Let's be real.....the Giants can pass the ball...rush the ball (REALLY WELL) and sack the QB (REALLY WELL). They have lots of INTs - made by 10 different players (I just heard this on the NFL Network).

Our beloved Skins? Our D is good but they are banged up (except for the secondary) but even so they have allowed the opposing teams RBs to run all over them the past 2 weeks.

Our offense simply does not score many points and the Giants have not allowed a 100 yard rushing game this season (the most they allowed was 88 yards).

I hate to say this but I just don't see us beating them.

They even discussed the possibility of Eli Manning being MVP...

I say HAIL TO 'EM... we CAN win this game, we NEED to win this game... and I think we're GOING TO win this game. How's that for a bit of cockeyed optimism? Hell yeah...

Definitely a coping mechanism! I will be swinging from my rooftop whaling the fight song if we do pull this out.

However, I won't be on here whining about every single aspect of the game if we lose. They are a better team than us. We are supposed to lose to them. Do I think we can pull it off? Yes...but it will take one game of us playing out of our mind.

If we lose...well then next week will be do or die for us. If we lose that? Well then our future is not looking so bright unless we finish perfect and then well we will be in our typical...did X, Y, and Z lose, b/c of X loses and Z wins or ties then we are in, but if Z wins, X ties and well Y wins well then we will need X-Z+Y = MC2 / Y to 5th power.

I hate this crap!! Why can't we just win the Division and be fat and happy during December!

bigjofc, I love Santana, and I'm as big a homer as anybody, and I hate the overpolicing of the league in the Goodell era, but I'd never argue that taking a swing at somebody should go unpunished...

The bigger question in my mind is whether these fines, even the big ones, make any real impact to the player's future behavior. I would bet that the immediate negative impact of the 15-yard PF is far more effective in moderating most players' behavior than any postgame penalty short of suspension...

Posted by: NateinthePDX | November 28, 2008 11:30 PM | Report abuse

Santana was contrite after the game and has no history of this sort of behavior, thus the low fine and no suspension. There are no conspiracy theories here. The NFL has suspended many superstars for a variety of offenses.

Can we beat the Giants? Sure. Will we? Only if somehow the 'skins and the stadium can channel the same kind of emotion the Giants did when Wellington Mara passed on.

Is it the end of the season if we lose? Hell no. Losing to the Giants and Ravens then beating the Bengals, Eagles and 49ers would likely give the 'skins the last wild card by the way of tie breaker unless the 'boys get hot and two of the South teams get eleven wins. I just don't see that happening.

You guys don't get it. No way I'm saying the Cards D is even comparable to ours BUT the Giants D IS and their offense is AVERAGING more points than our highest point total in a game this year. I just don't see us staying within one score. We need to be plus two in turnovers and have more TD's than field goals. We can't settle for field goals in the red zone. And if we lose our next to games and win our last three to make the playoffs big deal. If we can only beat the bad teams the last five weeks of the season then we can't expect to win in the playoffs, can we. Don't hate me, I was born in D.C. and grew up in Bethesda but I'm a realist. I hope I'm wrong and we beat down the Giants so everybody can tell me "I told ya so"!!!!

Well, that's what all the negative-types say up here: "I'm a realist." And you might be right.

'Skins have proven that they can beat good teams, and lose to bad teams. Teams that do well in the playoffs are teams that get hot in December. Then stay hot in January. Last year the Giants did that.

This year it could be the 'Skins if they revert to early-season form. If not, then you "realists" will rule.

That's why they play the games. On any given Sunday.... And all that.

We all know that every team is battling key injuries this time of year...here's an update on Gints walking wounded:

New York Giants wide receiver Plaxico Burress will miss Sunday’s game against Washington with a sore right hamstring....Linebacker Jonathan Goff (hamstring) also will not play against the Redskins, while three players—running backs Brandon Jacobs (knee) and Ahmad Bradshaw (neck) and defensive tackle Fred Robbins (shoulder)—are listed as questionable. Coughlin said Jacobs was able to practice Friday, while Bradshaw and Robbins could not.

Those are some key cogs folks. If London and CP play, I think we have a good chance. They will be ready after 21 is honored. Hopefully the offense had a good week of preactice.

p.s. totally agree that the fine was appropriate for Santana - he has a pretty good track record so $5K and no suspension (plus the 15 yard pentaly of course) was adequate. If this had been the other Moss, it might've been stiffer

Posted by: Notorious_LMG | November 29, 2008 8:27 AM | Report abuse

Well since Sterling Sharpe and Brian Baldinger have made the 2008 Giants into the greatest team of all time, we may as well just forfeit tomorrow. The Giants easily could have lost to both Pittsburgh and Cincy earlier this year. They are a solid team who learned how to close out games during their run last year. Skins are not there yet. I doubt any of the guys in our locker room expect to lose to this so called "elite" team by the media and some folks on here. We played like complete garbage in the opener at NY and still only lost by 9. Have some faith.

Wow,

Why don't we just give the Gints the Lombardi Trophy now and get it over with!

Question:

How many times have the Skins been blown out this year?

Answer:

Once. vs Steelers. And it was close in the third quarter (10-6 half, 16-6 after 3).

We may not score many points, but our D is stingy and generally keeps us close. That's how it is with this squad.

So why is everybody predicting a blowout?

Oh this is just GREAT! Now Zorn is comparing Portis to Gardner, Rod!

COS,

Great points about the blowouts this year.... In fact, that game would have realy been in our hands if Carlos "NO HANDS" Rogers, picks that ball off in 3rd qtr ..... he could've crawled into the end zone, but that's asking too much from him!!! WE DO HAVE A CHANCE. THis is the same team we beat in December last year...

Multiple sources tell us that Giants receiver Plaxico Burress has shot himself in the leg.

Apparently, Burress was carrying a loaded gun. And the gun went off.

The incident happened on Friday night/Saturday morning. His condition currently isn’t known.

Jay Glazer of FOXSports.com also is reporting this one, and he’ll soon have a story up with additional details.

Though at this point the player’s health and well being is the primary concern, what the hell was he doing with a loaded gun

ESPN says the injuries aren't "life threatening",.... That's great news for his family and friends.

Beantown,if thats true that it isn't funny at all. That brings back some very raw emotions and memories from last year.I hope he's ok.

Thank God his injuries are not life threatening.

Yeah I'm catching it on ESPN now.You know,we don't have the whole story so I'm not gonna pass judgement, but these guys with this all this money hanging out in these clubs need to do what my Grandma used to tell us,"Get somewhere and sit down"!

Posted by: smittdiddy | November 29, 2008 11:47 AM | Report abuse

Smit,

I agree. In this day and age, these guys have to know they're targets. ESPN the Mag had a great article on a few players and their fear "off the field".... These guys have it tough, and every decision they make about the public has strong consequences...

Good news ... Burress out for tomorrow
Bad news ... One fewer Spartan alumni playing tomorrow

Hadn't heard that business about Tuck. So I figure now the Skins chance to pull this off improve to one in a million ("So you're saying there's still a chance?"). Seriously, key to this game is to flustrate Eli early and often and suddenly and violently, in both halves. And don't sleep on Boss. GOT IT?!? No sleeping.

CAN I TURN THIS INTO A HOKIE BLOG for the short term..... There are some Redskin similarities.... TWO 14 play drives and 0 pts. The fact the Bryan Stinespring still has his job is a freakin joke.... Glennon? WHY? Another pick in the end zone....

No, execution-style indicates premeditation, which indicates sentient thought. Not Burress' M.O.

CHECK THIS OUT FROM JOHN McCLAIN and the Houston Chronicle in his NFL Notebook Section:

• Redskins defensive end Andre Carter has 10½ sacks. He's the first Washington player to reach double figures since linebacker LaVar Arrington in 2002. He's the first lineman since Bruce Smith and Marco Coleman in 2000.

I THINK JOHN IS ABOUT 1 YEAR TOO LATE ON THIS STAT!!!! I THINK AC HAS 2 This year!!!
