Of Men and Man Crushes

Mike Wise revealed his Redskins Park mancrush the other day, and, surprise, surprise, he chose the dashing and debonair Jason Taylor (Wise can't resist star-smooching sometimes). But me, I'm drawn to the common man, a Joe Six pack type.

My Redskins Park mancrush is no longer in the building. My Redskins Park mancrush is Jerry Coleman.

I knew there would be changes, and maybe significant carnage, when Dan Snyder bought Sportstalk 980, an implicit confirmation that his fledgling radio empire wasn't exactly thriving. But why couldn't they just leave my boy alone? Why Coleman? Why now, just when we were about to form the carpool to trump all carpools from the motherland to Ashburn?

That's my homeboy. That spunky dude made this place more fun, no doubt about it. Dude was unafraid to ask any question or rock Joe Gibbs's boat, and he delivered content to his station every day. He'd mix it up when he had to and brought an edge to his station's coverage. The man knows radio, and I like Frank Hanrahan, his replacement (and a fellow soccer-head like me), a ton, but Coleman was the man. I'm sure he's gonna catch on somewhere else soon, and will be better for it, but in the meantime the media schlub room here suffers.

Found it very interesting, too, that on the first day of camp a week ago, when the Redskins make the big Jason Taylor trade, there wasn't a single person from Snyder's new radio station there to catch any sound after the second practice. How amazing was that? Vinny Cerrato announces the trade and no one from 980 is there at the second practice of training camp, even though everyone knew Phillip Daniels was seriously hurt and the Taylor rumors were swirling?

(Where was Mouthpiece Larry Michael? It was only the first major move of the Cerrato/Zorn era.)

The day after the trade, all through morning drive, Snyder's new crown jewel had no interview clips or filed reports on the trade. (This isn't on Frank - he had to leave to broadcast the Mystics game, but I guess no one in management figured they needed to have another reporter there despite all that was going on ... and it was the beginning of camp, for goodness sakes.)

All I know is Coleman would have been there no matter what, and the listener would have heard a truly unfiltered voice, and a pointed question or two. But I guess the people who own that station/the Redskins - who stuck you with Mouthpiece Michael in the first place - might not be so thrilled with that.

With any luck J Reid and the boys will convince Coleman to make a road trip with us for the heck of it. First Bacardi and Coke is on us, my man.

Randoms: Today was the day for autographs and actually watching practice. I pulled off the toll road in the fetal position, still having flashbacks from Saturday's fiasco, only to find order restored. It was just me and a dude riding a bike in a Doug Williams jersey cruising down the Loudoun County Parkway. What a relief. Pretty overcast and guess it might rain, but there is all kinds of room to move out here in the fan section, and no mobs to fight ... Call me crazy, but any time I go more than a few months without listening to "London Calling," the first time I put it back on turns into a sensory overload experience. I get the chills, I start screaming every lyric in the car, I attempt to blow out my speakers and by the time the first few notes of "Hateful" come on I'm on the verge of tears. You cannot beat that album. If I can remember I'm gonna ask Zorn for his opinion on it after practice. Gotta remember to find out if HB Blades will definitely be the second Redskins designated to wear the speaker helmet on defense should London Fletcher actually ever miss a play in his NFL careeer.

Jason,

It would be nice if you could make some time to write about training camp. What have you seen that has surprised you? What did you expect to see that you haven't seen? Which players are outperforming? Which players are underperforming?

Thanks in advance!

Dude, we get a new post like every hour, don't hate because Jason is taking a stab at someone to try and hook his boy. Most of us would do the same.

With that said - BONG! BONG! BONG!

Wake'n'Bake - well not really, but its fun to say.

All Jerry Coleman did was try to push people's buttons at redskin park by trying to ask "the hard question". It's easy to be mr. negative on sports radio. You guys rarely break down the actual games by plays and skills. You can arm chair quarterback the coaching decisions and drama in the locker rooms. Paaaaaleeze...Jason, stop crying about your job and how vinny can't whisper the truth into your ear.

Well, as media consolidation moves forward in D.C. all you folks who love to hate on the Post will have plenty of places to go and get the carefully crafted party line out of Redskins Park. Then you can stop complaining about Jason and go listen to Larry Michael and his 'source meter'. Give me a break, are we in middle school?

Posted by: Ehren | July 27, 2008 10:15 AM | Report abuse

Jason,

You are at the absolute top of your game when you're giving us new reasons to hate Snyder, strone when you're talking about injuries, and you're pretty good when you're talking about roster moves (although you didn't realize that Fitch is in his third year, not first).

Now show us your stuff on analysis and insight. How is training camp going for the Redskins? How does the team look? Will the offense come together? Will the defense change much with Williams gone?

Hey, at least Coleman would show his face in the lockeroom and not HIDE behind a computer!. He treated the skins fairly ( considering they LOST more than they won ) . His replacement so far, seems clue-less....Snyder's type of fella

Not that it matters, but it never seemed Coleman was popular among some of the other "reporters" on 980. It always seemed like he was the freshman in high school who would end up stuck upside down in the trash can. Czaban and Pollin (the ultimate wannabe frat boys) used to rip on him for no real reason on the air... the only guy who showed him any respect was Doc Walker. I don't know what he did to be treated that way, but even if he did annoy some of his colleagues (and some of the suits at Redskins Park), he is a solid reporter.

Bacardi and coke? A grown man drinks that? This is what they serve to underaged girls at fraternity parties.

And you're going to buy it for him? No, I read that wrong. It was plural -- "First drink is on us." You guys are really going to buy him a whole drink? I think the Post is way overpaying you if you can throw your money around like that. Hope your wife doesn't find out.

I was out at Redskins Park for this mornings practice - seemed to be a pretty light practice and only lasted a little over an hour.

Campbell was looking very accurate today. I didn't really see many incomplete passes from him. At one point he hit on three straight passes to Moss, who was catching everything thrown his way. After he caught a quick WR screen, someone on the offense yelled "BYE BYE!" as Moss had a ton of room to run.

Campbell fumbled a snap...ooops.

Fred Davis jumped offsides on a hard count.

They had Betts split out wide and lined up as a WR.

I saw Moss in the slot a couple of times.

Not only does Campbell look more assertive and decisive...more like a leader, but he also sounds the part. He's quite loud once he gets up on the line, especially if its a hard count.

Devin Thomas and Malcolm Kelly were hanging out together a lot while hanging back and watching practice.

Shawn Springs was playing a good bit of safety today and intercepted a Brennan pass. He made the right read and jumped the route perfectly.

On the next play, Brennan made a great throw into traffic and hit Fred Davis in stride.

They were switching Andre Carter and Jason Taylor back and forth a lot...I'd say probably 35% or 40% of the plays saw Taylor at right defensive end.

I'm not sure if the WRs were having trouble getting open or if the QBs weren't making the correct reads, but on a few occasions they were holding the ball for way too long. I only saw Campbell do this once or twice, but Devine was doing this on almost every play.

I took pictures again and should be able to post some links a little bit later today.

JLC, I've gone to bat for you on this blog before but you just lost me, dude. Jerry Coleman is the biggest nerd and most worthless douche I've ever met in my life. If there was ever a poster child for pro-choice, he's it.

Big deal: he had to get some sound bites in Ashburn. That was the easiest part of his damn job. He had no insight, couldn't give a worthwhile opinion, and I've seen him in "action" at the studio. There's a reason the other guys don't like him; he's there slurping coffee and making passes at interns all f-ing day. Even the board operators think he's a douche!

I blame Snyder for just about everything except 9/11, but I doubt he had anything to do with Coleman being fired. I'm sure the new GM there saw what a waste of 401K and benefits Coleman is and got him the hell out of there. If I didn't know the clown who was PD there when Coleman was hired, I'd still be looking for why he was even brought on to begin with! I've commented in this space before my hatred for Bram Weinstein, but that's mostly on a personal level and has nothing to do with his reporting abilities. He destroys Coleman in that regard.

And some folks on this blog will make the assertion that I'm bitter from my time there, but I'm really not. Scott Linn is a real asset over there and one of the most quality people I've met in this market. Czabe is a national treasure as far as I'm concerned. And there's several behind-the-scenes types that are truly good folks. But just like any job, there's a couple of turds that kind of stink up the joint, and Jerry Coleman is one.

So for what it's worth, you just lost A LOT of cool points with me for propping up this a$$ clown. If area radio stations (or anywhere for that matter) know what's good for them, they'll give this guy NO love.

++++6'6", 244 pounds?

Wow! That's a lanky dude. Can't wait to see what he can do, though; light on his feet, as we all know, and quick hands, and a penchant for sacking the QB.

All good...

Posted by: Chia Pet | July 27, 2008 2:44 AM++++

Oh I'd pick him tops for a two hand touch game. And he's great pass rusher, class act, and positive locker room presence.

All that goes by the board when the big uglies pound on him for 16 weeks in the big ugly NFC East. And unless he's going out there wearing a blocking dummy on his a$$, his 244 pounds doesn't offer much padding.

I have a GREAT idea for an investigative piece. Assign a budding Woodstein to find out how many people employed at Redskin Park are assigned to rip the Post on behalf of Snyder.

Snyder's not that different from Bush. He has Redskins.com and Redskins radio is his official mouthpieces, and tries to hinder the Free Press as best he can. Bush has Fox News.

From Jasno's football post, "With the starters likely to play one series, at most, it's looking like the third team could be playing the entire second half."

That' exactly what I want to see. I want to see who on the 3rd string can play a half of football and stand up the next day. Then, they can be the third string.

Posted by: bangkokben | July 27, 2008 11:51 AM | Report abuse

The two big questions out of camp are a) who is hurt? and b) who is going to make the team?

With that, knowing that probably 48 of the 53 man roster is already set, the thing to ask is are there any vets who could be surprise cuts and are there any rookies/FAs who could make the team?

Jasno has already given us plenty on the injury front. And it's too early to tell about the second part. No non-ex-player in the media (Jasno, Peter King, Bob Costas, whomever) can give you a critique of any player's technique or "how they look" in practice.

I suspect you'll get more analysis after the first preseason game when Jasno's league sources can weigh in on film of certain players. Remember, teams in the league can't attend or film training camps of other teams, so right now, apart from what folks at Redskins Park think, there is no way for Jasno to triangulate an opinion on specific players (his opinion, 'Skins opinion, and independent league-wide consensus)...

Corkczar,

Keep beating your tired drum. Jason Taylor has been in the league forever - always called a tweener - and always stopping the run. Yeah! Check out his injury history as well. The dude is too quick. There is more than one way to skin a fox.

Keep posting your negativity until it happens and then tell us your right. Eight years of stopping the run and playing every game - all of a sudden the guy will get hurt because of two games against the Giants? Maybe, if you keep the negative nellie chicken shcite mantra.

Don't give me that NFC east crap. This isn't your father's NFC East. The Eagles aren't going to run it but 45% of the time with a scat back. The Cowboys won't be able to run the ball any better than they did last year at FED-EX. They use the pass to set up the run which they won't be able to with two guys coming hard off the edge. They couldn't set up the run with T.O. out and this pass rush and secondary will neutralize it again. Giants are two games and you have Evans and Carter playing downs on the left.

Props to Golston for coming in for Montgomery and getting two sacks in the scrimmage.

Whining is good. Your critics are your best friends.

There are two kinds of posts this blog is great for:

1. The useless trivia that gives you background about a player. This is stuff that doesn't warrant a full article on its own (think Cooley and the whole "Heavy Metal Parking Lot" thing, or pretty much any outrageous thing Cooley does).

2. The stuff where Jasno quotes another anonymous league source to give you an independent assessment of a game, the team, or a specific player.

Everyone who knows anything about Dan Snyder's history with the team or with business in general knows that he's a major league a-hole. Jasno can keep beating the drum for all I care. I'm immune to it at this point, but then again, I don't have to deal with Snyder's shenanigans on a daily basis as part of my job.

Jasno is negative towards the Skins, not just the FO and as long as this space is open to comments from anyone, I will be commenting. Ignore if you don't like it.

Haha, cute. While I didn't luck out by selling my telemarketing and online spam firm to Havas just prior to the dot com bubble imploding, I seem to have done just fine and dandy for myself, thank you very much. I actually do know quite a thing or two about business, and while I may never own a professional football team, I'd stack my business acumen against Snyder's any day of the week.

For starters, I wouldn't buy a cheap burger joint that can't gain traction in a very crowded segment, a chain of roller coasters in an industry fast on the decline, or invest in a movie star's production company when said movie star is overexposed. Attempting to extend and cross-promote brands is one thing, but trying to do so by resurrecting moribund franchises in industries you know nothing about when you KNOW you have a control and delegation issue is a recipe for disaster.

Hmmm, come to think about it, investing in a pro football team, knowing nothing about football, having control and delegation issues with coaching staffs and front offices...

Yeah, you're right. I'm 1/100th the businessman Dan Snyder is.

As for the 53-man roster prediction from this link: http://was.scout.com/2/772206.html

I have both Rogers and E. James on the PUP to begin the year. Leigh Torrence is hands down the 3rd Corner, Justin Tryon gets the 4th corner. Chris Horton makes S over the injured Moore who ends up on IR or the practice squad. Byron Westbrook is in as the 5th corner and Rob Jackson makes the line at least until the guys come off the PUP. Nemo might make the team as 2nd FB but if he does, Matt Sinclair the 6th LB is the odd guy out. If there are any surprise vets gone it's Wade or Fabini for Crummey.

Posted by: | July 27, 2008 12:16 PM

Sure, Snyder was a good business man. But he's ruined the Redskins and taken hits on Six Flags and Johnny Rockets. Smooth moves from that guy.

I'm not sure why there are so many Snyder/Cerrato apologists on this board, but feel free to post your inane comments. Snyder has been awful for this team, just as Angelos has in Baltimore. Sure, Snyder is willing to spend money, but too bad he surrounds himself with cronies, mouthpieces and otherwise incompetent associates. There's still time for him to reverse his legacy, but we'll see if that day ever comes.

And JLC is right on for his criticism of Snyder's wont to buy all media outlets in Washington. I hate that he's doing that because I'm not looking for the party line when I turn on 980. I'm looking for reasoned and honest analysis. That no-talent hack Larry Michael won't give it to me. And yes, sometimes JLC won't, either, because he can sway too far in the other direction. But at least I get more from Redskins Insider than I do from Redskins.com or any of Snyder's awful radio stations.

Oh, and for some of the other complainers, JLC has been providing daily updates and analysis on this team. Pay attention. Not all his posts are like this one.

There's a post a little higher up about you're Jason Taylor bashing too. I was surprised he is 11 pounds lighter, though. But Khary Campbell at 224, God forbid we lose a starting LB.

Being a boundless optimist doesn't make you a true Redskins fan. Guess what? You're allowed to criticize the team even if you're a fan. This with-us-or-against-us mentality is idiotic, and it's also a reason this nation has been torn apart politically. People are allowed to have differing opinions. But the criteria for being a Redskins fan aren't that the team will be 12-4, the team will win the Super Bowl, Dan Snyder is an excellent owner, Vinny Cerrato really knows what he's doing. I can say that I think the team won't win the Super Bowl (but hope it does), that Snyder is an awful owner and that Cerrato, while a good judge of talent, has been a disaster so far and still maintain true Redskins fan status. Sorry, being a fan doesn't necessarily come with a complimentary pair of rose-colored glasses.

This is why trading out of the 1st round should be the modus operandi of this team for years to come.

From Pat Kirwan's recent nfl.com piece:

"Rookie money (guaranteed)
It sounds like veteran players are starting to realize that the rookie contracts are out of line with what veterans are making. Wait until they see what it looks like when all 31 players selected in the first round of last April's draft have completed their deals.

Back in 2006, first-round draft picks averaged $10.3 million in guaranteed money. In 2007, it was close to $11 million per first-round player. I ran out some projections on 2008 based on the top four rookies already being signed and the Joe Flacco (No. 18 overall pick) deal. It's conceivable that the top 10 draft picks will average $22-25 million in guaranteed money. The top 20 players could easily average $16-18 million in guaranteed money and the first round should average close to $13 million in guaranteed money.

No one can really believe 31 unproven college kids deserve close to $400 million in guaranteed money or that there isn't a better way of rewarding talent."

Now that you have my resume, my beef with Jerry is that he never seemed to take the most coveted job at the station (Skins Beat Reporter) seriously. When he started there, he didn't even know how to use the equipment. It ain't the damn Batcave; Cool Edit in radio is like Microsoft Word in an office: you should have known how to use that for years by now. And instead of boning up those skills, he was trying to bone up on the young cuties. And I'm not the only one who noticed. I'm just the only one on this blog who was there.

Last season, I (and a few others) were derided at just past the midpoint of the season when we said the Skins still had a shot at the playoffs.

Then, when they made it to the playoffs, the tone changed on here. People who were previously heavy in their criticism suddenly became optimistic fans again.

So I guess the lesson is: Until they clinch a playoff spot, expect a lot of whining and gnashing of teeth on here from September through December.

Posted by: | July 27, 2008 1:20 PM

I don't think that's true at all. Fans want to see their teams do well, but at the same time, they are allowed to take offense at how the ownership group/front office run the organization. Here's what you have to do: Differentiate between fans' criticism of the folks running the team and the players on it. I love the players, and I want them all to succeed. I would never wish ill on any of them. And if the Skins winning a Super Bowl somehow validates what Snyder has been doing for years (and I don't think it would), so be it because it would've meant that the Skins won the trophy. I hope this team does finish 12-4 and captures a Super Bowl. Do I think that happens this year? Not really, because there's no depth in the secondary or at linebacker, because the injuries always mount up, particularly with the skill players, and because the special teams, notably the kicking game, is so bad. So does that mean I'm not a "true" fan? I don't think so. But I guess to some of you, it does.

Here's my concession, by the way, because, while I can be critical, I can also give props to people who have done well. I think Cerrato's been awful, but I will say this about him: He's generally a good judge of college talent. I think his draft his year was pretty good; although, I would've preferred he take a DE in the second round, rather than Fred Davis. But other than that, I think he had a successful draft. He also didn't go crazy on the free agent market, which is clearly a positive. So it looks like he is on the right path with this team, which is probably more of a credit to how Gibbs did things. But, if in fact he is learning, then good on him for recognizing what didn't work in the past and changing his behaviors.

Happy to let you guys know what was going on at practice today. I wish I was able to make it out there more often...that work stuff got in the way though.

So another thing I noticed this morning was that anytime a pass was thrown in Smoot's direction, he would literally scream at the receiver as the ball was in the air. I guess he was trying to distract them? Pretty funny to hear though

Brennan got in a lot of reps against the first team defense. They were doing the same as they did in the scrimmage - first team offense against second team defense and first team defense against second team offense.

Devine looked pretty bad on a lot of his throws. Its still way too early to tell who's got the edge on the 3rd QB spot, but Brennan certainly looked better today.

I think Suisham, Frost, Brooks, and Albright got bored enough at one point to start running up and down one of the far fields. They didn't really do much of anything today, other than run back and forth.

Danny Smith busted out the volley balls again today for some special teams work. One of the gunners would start sprinting towards the goal line as a coach tossed the volleyball in the air. The object is to keep the ball from going into the end zone.

Oh, and I can confirm for everyone that players do actually stretch before AND after practice. Maybe they're not stretching enough?

He is the worst beat reporter the Post has had covering a local team in the 35 years I have been reading this paper. Why he is not replaced is beyond me.

Be honest cabraman, lots and lots of stuff is beyond you.

If you're so fired up about Jerry f-ing Coleman, why don't YOU give him a job? Or is Burger King not hiring?"....

Brownwood- No , not his roomate- never met the dude - just an EVERYDAY listener of the fomer Sportstalk 980....You write and sound like a bitter fool , that is all - you went to a SMALLER MARKET while Coleman stayed in a TOP TEN city - lol! . Do you realize how stupid and bitter you sound ? you worked as a freaking board -op ( Kudos for the admission!) - you push buttons FOR A LIVING ( a step below BK -BTW) ! So, what the heck do you know about what Jerry did in the field? the guy covered EVERY LOCAL DC TEAM 980 sent him to ...WHERE DID THEY SEND YOU ? to run a taped program ? no doubt . Yeah , thanks for sharing that IMPRESSIVE resume !

Look dude, last word on this subject. I don't have to justify my career choices with you. You obviously know NOTHING about radio because 1) you're defending Jerry f-ing Coleman to the death like he's Chris Mortensen and 2) you don't just wake up one day and end up on the #8 radio market in the country without experience unless you know someone. And since I'm just starting out and Jerry has a radio resume older than 5 years, he's got me there. However, I haven't been fired twice in the last 3 years by Top 20 markets. I'll take my consistent employment in a Top 100 market over getting sh*t-canned in D.C. and like it.

I've been around the guy, Steve. I know people who were around him EVERY DAY. So I know more about this than you do, whether you like that or not. I shared my feelings after our blog host got all gay on us and if they offend you, GET OVER IT. I'm not killing you over you liking him, so don't get all f-ing mad because I don't like the guy. Agree to disagree.

I think Jason should just have a disclaimer at the top of every post that says "I hate Dan and Vinny" and get it out of the way right there.

Many Redskins fans don't like Dan and/or Vinny but with training camp going on we don't talk about it constantly.

Also, Jason, for all he kills Dan and Vinny, never admits when he was wrong. He killed, killed, killed us for not upgrading the defensive line after the disastrous 2006 campaign and mocked the front office and coaches for sticking with the same defensive line last year in 2007.

Looked pretty good me.

None of us has a crystal ball, just a little perspective would be nice. . . .

YEAH - ENJOY PUSHING BUTTONS IN A TOP 100 MARKET ! While Coleman advances above you More - you write like a bitter , no-talent fool ....who is VERY jealous. Now, go ahead and push a buttom

Posted by: P Diddy | July 27, 2008 12:26 PM

The guy made more money last year than you will make in your entire life, and that's what "business" is all about. So yes, you're not even 1/100th the businessman that Dan Snyder is. Jealousy is an ugly thing.

Also, these guys ripping on Brownwood because he was "just' a board-op, obviously do not understand how the sports radio broadcasting business works. It is the norm that guys have to pay their dues as a board-op in order to advance into the on-air jobs most everyone wants. Thousands of on-air guys around the country have started out the same way as brownwood; first as a board-op, then on-air in a small market, hoping to eventually advance to an on-air job in a major market. I find it hilarious when guys who probably work the night shift at 7-11 try to rip on a guy for "only" being able to get an on-air job in a "smaller" market.

G- you are such a"radio expert" - Brownwood is a small market LIFER .

So, where do you board op ? lol . Talent can actually get you places , too .

MORE SO than showing some PD you can push buttons and answer phones- then post on a blog like a know it -all

ME think making a hamburger , or your job- might be MORE CHALLENEGING.
