Bruce Allen reiterates that Haynesworth, McIntosh weren't trade topics

Updated at 7:37 p.m.

Redskins General Manager Bruce Allen reiterated today that the Redskins did not shop defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth and said the team also did not have any trade discussions regarding linebacker Rocky McIntosh.

"Believe me, Albert's agent has known from the first week the league year started what our thoughts were," Allen said. "We know where Albert stands and he knows where we stand. We look forward to having him have a productive season."

Allen met with reporters at Redskins Park, while Coach Mike Shanahan made the quick trip to FedEx Field to address fans attending the team's Draft Day Party. (Dan Steinberg covered that at the D.C. Sports Bog.)

"Obviously we've had a busy day," Allen said. "I believe the Redskins over the weekend, the last three days, we've gotten better as a football team."

Of McIntosh, a restricted free agent who did not report to the team's first minicamp and has yet to sign his tender, Allen said: "He's an unsigned player right now. You can't trade an unsigned player. And we had no talks and we have not offered him anywhere, in case that rumor was out there. Yeah, I expect him to be a part of our team this year."

Allen also addressed Saturday's Jason Campbell trade and said he was pleased with what the Redskins received in return -- Oakland's fourth-round pick in 2012.

"The Jason Campbell situation obviously took a different direction once we acquired Donovan McNabb," Allen said. "Working with his agent and working with Jason, we were trying to find him the proper home where he had a chance to compete for the starting job. The trade worked out to the compensation that we felt comfortable with and it was the place that Jason wanted to go."

With Campbell's departure, the Redskins will lean on free-agent signee Rex Grossman to serve as McNabb's backup. "We are comfortable with Rex," he said. "Very familiar with the offense. He had a good minicamp last week...and he's working hard."

He said the team would seek to sign an undrafted quarterback as a free agent. Among those available are Jevan Snead, although he reportedly is headed for Tampa Bay, and West Virginia's Jarrett Brown. The Redskins made it a goal to add picks, as they began the draft with only four picks, fewer than any other team. They managed to walk away with six players, making trades with New England and Miami, and added a 2012 fourth-rounder as part of the Campbell trade.

Of the team's six picks, three were offensive linemen, and only one was used on a defensive player.

"You talk about the guy who hit the lottery, how about [offensive line coach] Chris Foerster?" Allen said. "Comes to a new team and gets three linemen in his first draft. Fifty percent of the draft is a Chris Foerster draft."

Allen also addressed each of the team's five draft picks from Saturday. He said Terrence Austin, the receiver and kickoff/punter returner from UCLA, has a shot at winning two return spots on special teams.

"[Special teams coach] Danny Smith's quite excited to get somebody of his potential," Allen said.

Perry Riley, the LSU weak-side linebacker, will begin his career as an inside linebacker.

"[Linebackers coach] Lou Spanos researched him to a greater detail than I would ever want to go into," Allen said. "Everything you saw on tape, you saw a competitive smart football player who will feel will be able to help us this year."

Dennis Moore, the tight end from Louisiana Tech, could find himself lining up at three positions: tight end, fullback and H-back. He said New Mexico center Erik Cook is versatile and might be able to play guard, but would likely begin the team's next minicamp focusing on the center position. And West Virginia's Selvish Capers could find himself moving around the line.

"We'll have a better idea on picks three through seven later on, but what we did in the first two rounds, we're very proud of and we feel it helped our football team," Allen said.

cattle markets took a dive this weekend, but are expected to be up as we get closer to the start of the season.

If I'm wrong I'm wrong but it seems to me the media can't report anything negative with the Skins these days so they are really reaching if you ask me....I mean they have said that it has been false like 4 times.

Yea sorry about that, 8-8 is what I meant. It's been a long week, baby in the hospital overnight, dog back for an overnight stay at the vet. Finally got a contract on our house...

nah, wasn't crackin' on ya, i thought 9-9's what you meant.

sorry to hear about the kid, man, a buddy of mine's got his in the hosp. too. i don't have any but that's gotta be rough.

You can tell there is a new regime. Snyder/Cerrato took 3 wrs...Shanahan/Allen took 3 offensive lineman. These guys know what they are doing.

Man it's nice to have smart people who know how to talk to the media, I think all these guys can make the team.

I think Shanny will play younger guys unlike Zorn.

We still have time to look out there and get some guys that can help in the short term, why some of these guys develop.

With the tight end being the only head scratcher (Davis, Ryan, Yoder, Cooley, Sellar...who else?), I like the moves and the selections.

Get them signed!

I just called Direct TV and renewed my NFL SUNDAY TICKET...No more going to fridge, le toylette (crapper), next door, corner store, etc during last four min of a game.

Looks like we signed guys who are versatile and can contribute at several positions. Austin was 2nd team Pac 10 kick returner. Had 1800+ all purpose yards in 2008 and 2009 at UCLA. Pretty good.

no worries, we're all allowed to be wrong here.... not anyone's day job, is it?

don't think anyone in the media has said "a deal is done!" and then been proven wrong (although Jasno came close). it's all rumors about potential deals, but the pattern is pretty consistent... AH is available for the right price.

no surprise it didn't happen if the reciprocal value wasn't there. pretty low this weekend, might increase once camps start and going through to pre-season. my vote is to move him, but we need to keep up the Potemkin village of him staying so the value doesn't plummet.

true true. ain't nobody gonna offer the 'skins enough to get rid of him, plus the fact that we know what he can do in the 4-3. also, in my layman's opinion, he would just freakin' dominate @3-4 DE.

I've thought about AH at DE in 4-3. Never have to drop into coverage, bull rush men in space and w/o 3x teams. I do think he'd be a beast there. Let him collapse to the middle on runs. Oh, AH, can't you just feel the love? Can't you just smell the fear?

Posted by: MrChili | April 24, 2010 7:12 PM | Report abuse

As i have so unelequantly (sp/word??) put it previously, it would be rediculous to trade AH. That being said, I heard somewhere from a very highly rated HC and GM that every player is tradeable. Just the price has to be right.

my cost - 1st & 2nd next year or equivalent in players.

He is that good to make those around him better. Look at the Titans. Vanden Bosch did not have a very good season after AH left. Great D to average D after trade.

Yesterday sometime (I looked and looked for it) I said we would take a LB next and preferrably an ILB if any decent ones were left. Next an OT and then the best available in the seventh. I also said there should be no QB's or RB's. Thank you REDSKINS brass for following my lead.

The trades netted A loss of SOUP and a gain of a sixth and two more seventh's. I wasn't anticipating any of that of course. BTW, I said several days ago we'd be lucky to get a seventh for CAMPBELL. What did we get in return from OAKLAND? I've been away for treatment.

For anyone who still believes that the Skins are actively trying to trade Haynesworth (even after all the direct denials on the record), I have an alternate theory.

Notice what Allen's quote was: "Believe me, Albert's agent has known from the first week the league year started what our thoughts were," Allen said. "We know where Albert stands and he knows where we stand. We look forward to having him have a productive season."

I think that all these rumors are coming from talks that Albert's agent is having behind the back of the Skin's FO. It's well know that agents are some of the most common "sources," directly or indirectly, for the reporters who seek-out rumors.

Haynesworth is a cancer and should be cut. This 54 year old, 20-30 lb over ideal weight fan challenges Albert to a jumping jack contest. Loser donates 1% of their total income from last year to the charity of the winner's choice. If I lose, I'll wear a 92 jersey to a Redskin game and lead the cheers. If I win, Albert attends the remainder of the voluntary workouts, and wears a KicksKarate Never Give Up tee shirt to all of the workouts. Bring it on, Albert. Before you guys go gushing over this draft - ask yourselves this question - why on earth would we waste a pick on a Tight End? Will this guy ever see the field with Cooley and Davis ahead of him? NO. Will he ever see the field with Portis, Johnson and Parker ahead of him? NO. Total waste of a pick. We needed a Running Back, a Safety, and a Quarterback. Did we get ANY of those three? NO. Shananhan/Allen may be just as incompotent as Cerrato/Zorn.

It's understandable why none of the reported suitors for Haynesworth's services are willing to admit that being the case. He's still under contract to the Redskins, denial at least publically keeps them within the rules.
