Mike Shanahan likens Trent Williams to Ryan Clady

When Redskins coach Mike Shanahan last selected an offensive lineman in the first round, he took Ryan Clady with the 12th overall pick in 2008.

Clady has since established himself as one of the league's top tackles, garnering all-pro honors in 2008 and 2009 and being selected to the Pro Bowl in 2009, and Shanahan did not shy away from comparing Washington's first-round pick Trent Williams on Thursday night to the Broncos' standout.

When speaking about Williams' ability to move along the line and whether that gives him more of an opportunity to find somewhere he can be special, Shanahan evoked Clady's name for a second time in the post-draft press conference.

"Well, obviously the more you can do the better off you're going to be," Shanahan said. "A couple years ago [Denver] picked Ryan Clady and I had not picked a first-rounder [offensive lineman] before and Trent has that type of ability if not more ability. So hopefully he can play at the level Ryan did coming in as a rookie and that'll be a great challenge to him because Ryan Clady played very well as a rookie. And hopefully Trent can come in and play at a very high level himself."

Asked how Williams compared to Clady when evaluating the former Oklahoma standout, Shanahan checked the physical variables -- "speed, quickness, size" -- off the list before tempering the Clady-level expectations somewhat.

"You've got to watch people play," Shanahan said. "I thought Ryan proved very quickly that he was in the NFL. Hopefully Trent can do the same thing. Part of [the] evaluation process is studying people and you're always keeping your fingers crossed that when they do come in [that] they play at the level that you think they're capable of doing and Trent's no different."

A League-Source explains why we didn't trade Albert Haynesworth to the Titans
...................................................
Here's how the conversation went:

Bruce Allen: Dan, Tennessee will give us their first round and third round picks for Albert, but they won't give us back any of the signing bonus.

Dan Snyder: Will you use the picks on wide receivers, running backs, and safeties?

Bruce Allen: We need O line. That's where we'll use the picks.

Dan Snyder: Tell 'em "No deal."

How many people do you see wearing Clady jerseys? I bet Williams will sell twice that number. I think the odds of that happening are 135%.

As I looked through the comments we had some cry baby b_tches before the draft, who wanted LT. We now have some of those same b-tches who think we took the wrong one. I think Shanny knows his offense better then some of you cubicle GM's.

I love the comments that Williams will be a RT, where did you people get that, did one of the suits from ESPN tell you that.

This guy is a LT who fits Shanny's blocking scheme end of story.

I hate that we gotta wait until Saturday to see what's next for us...hopefully we can land a pick or two for tonight in a trade.

Still can't believe it was the Broncos that stepped up and took Tebow...but come to think of it, that might actually be a good situation for both parties.

Posted by: brownwood26 | April 23, 2010 6:20 AM | Report abuse

Shanny and Stoops are boys and Stoops said he highly recommended Williams. Said he was a hard worker and that he would not regret taking him at 4. I like the pick. I really hope we can get into the second round somehow.

To be fair, I think some got that from the fact that Williams played RT for most of his tenure at Oklahoma. He only switched to LT this past season after Loadholt left.

That said, everyone says he's versatile...can play almost anywhere on the line, including center. He certainly needs coaching...he's probably not going to just hit the ground running at LT. If we can get a stopgap at LT and let him get comfortable with the speed of the NFL at RT, that may be a good option. But I wouldn't completely rule out having him pick up LT quickly and being a Week 1 starter.

Especially when we don't have sh*t else for options.

Brown,

I can see that but this guy is Shanny's kind of LT, I look for them to get a 4th or 5th round RT and it's on.

They could put him at RT for a year but I doubt it.

Okung is a big strong guy but I don't think he would be able to do the things Shanny needs from a LT.

Posted by: Flounder21 | April 23, 2010 6:39 AM | Report abuse

So did Jason Reid call it, or what? He was 80% certain that the Redskins would pick Trent Williams. Of course, he was 75% certain that they would take Okung. And, all told, he was 90% certain that they would take someone else. The guy is a true insider.

A fourth or fifth round RT is also known as "a project." It's not on with "a project" as a starter. They'll sign a free agent either from the existing pool or in the next few weeks when teams start cutting tackles to make room for the guys they drafted. I'm 90% certain of this.

Posted by: League-Source | April 23, 2010 6:46 AM | Report abuse

We should get Gaither from Bmore to play RT. Not sure what we'd have to give Bmore, maybe AH? Maybe we can sign Levi Jones again to play the right side.

LS,

You can find great talent in the 4th or 5th round, you might be right they might go veteran, but that 4th or 5th round pick will be starting before the season is over.

Signing Jones is more likely I think Baltimore was trying to scare Gaither. I don't think they were ever really going to trade him.

Just like the all mighty we only want character guys on are team Steelers, were never going to trade Big ben.

Great selection.
Now if Sir Shanaman can get us into today 's rounds maybe he can get us a bookend tackle.
Keep workin' baby.

What do the Saints want for him? He is a young guy, that would make starting Williams a RT a definate possibility.

Dez Bryant going to Dallas scares me. The guy's IQ might be 65, but he can play.

I'm speculating here, but I think the Skins made a last second run at Jamaal Brown because they would have plugged him in at LT and been satisfied with that enough to take Berry at #4.

And F Dez Bryant. By the time he's a legit star (IF that day comes), Romo will be in decline. Book it.

He was on IR last year, and they still won SB, so they are looking to pick up someone in a trade that would help them repeat.

Posted by: frediefritz | April 23, 2010 7:31 AM | Report abuse

Great 1st pick. It does suck we don't have a 2 or 3, but keep in mind we picked up Jarmon using our 3rd (he would have went late 1st to mid 2nd rounder this year) and McNabb with our 2nd. At least we got something for those picks. Watching Miami use our 6th (from the Jason Taylor debacle) makes me want to hurt someone.....

Send Haynesworth and Landry to New Orleans for Brown and their 2nd and 4th rounders and conditional pick in 2011. Boom.

I really hope he's a slackarse.

Like forgetting to bring cleats to his workout type slackarse...or different...

Like the pick, makes sense, best option for what they're running now.

Wish we had more, send AH to NE for a couple 2nds....

You're not the first guy who's suggested it, but all of you refuse to answer the #1 question: If Haynesworth doesn't want to play in the Redskins 3-4 defense, why would he want to play in Baltimore's 3-4 defense?

Yeah team. Quantity beats quality any day, especially up here. Quantity is my specialty.

I've done the math for you:

JReid -- 75% of the posts
CBoren -- 35% of the posts
PTenorio -- 85% of the posts
Rmaese -- 65% of the posts
Joint posts -- 45% of the posts

Frankly I'm disappointed. PTenorio was the best with 85%, but I frankly expected 110% effort out of all of them. Slackers.

Trading Albert Haynesworth at this point would be stupid. If there wasn't going to be a 1st round pick (plus more) involved in an AH deal, then the Skins would have been scalped.

Let's see what we can get for Rocky Mac, AC and/or JC17 - though with Clausen still out there, I wonder how that impacts the JC17 market.

I'm just happy to see some common sense for a change, after watching Vinney drafting 3 recievers. Good job Mr Shanahan now trade Fat Albert for a second or third and fifth. Trade him tonight please and get a safety taylor Mays if available.
