Redskins' prospects with No. 4 pick: Jimmy Clausen

With the first round of the NFL Draft just hours away, today we'll take a look at the prospects the Redskins could be targeting with the fourth overall pick and gauge the likelihood of each landing in Washington. Check back for updates.

Player: Jimmy Clausen, quarterback, Notre Dame

Basics: 6-foot-3, 222 pounds. Declared for the draft after a junior year in which he completed 68.8 percent of his passes for 3,722 yards with 28 touchdowns and only four interceptions. He had a 161.42 passer rating.

Why he might fit: He appears to be the most NFL-ready quarterback in the draft. For three seasons at Notre Dame, Clausen played in a pro-style system and became adept at reading defenses and understanding protection schemes. Clausen also has the requisite physical tools and, because he has been in the national spotlight since he was a high school junior, knows how to handle pressure.

Reasons against the pick: Coach Mike Shanahan is interested in drafting and developing a young quarterback, but he might be committed to Pro Bowler Donovan McNabb for another two or three seasons. Clausen could be ready to start in 2011. The Redskins gave up two picks to acquire McNabb from the Eagles - including their second-rounder Friday night - so that's a big investment for potentially only one season.

Chances Redskins draft him: 10 percent. After acquiring McNabb, the Redskins conducted their previously scheduled private workouts with Clausen at South Bend, Ind., and Sam Bradford in Norman, Okla. Even if the Redskins have genuine interest in selecting a quarterback with their first pick, Clausen makes more sense for a team that needs someone to step in quickly.

I'm with you Greg...you'll do better than this.

I mean, they go from positions the Redskins clearly won't draft to individual players. They can't even keep to the misplaced format they set to begin with.

There has to be a punter they'll take at #4, right?? I mean, that just makes too much sense.

Redskins plotting a surprise at No. 4?
Posted by Michael David Smith on April 22, 2010 8:15 AM ET
With less than twelve hours before the start of the NFL draft, everyone seems to have reached a consensus that the Rams will take Sam Bradford first, the Lions will take Ndamukong Suh second and the Buccaneers will take Gerald McCoy third.

With the fourth overall pick, everyone thinks the Redskins will take an offensive tackle, probably Trent Williams or maybe Russell Okung. But ESPN's Adam Schefter, who is close with Redskins coach Mike Shanahan and has broken several Redskins-related stories this offseason, says he thinks people are going to be surprised with what the Redskins do with the fourth pick.

"I'm not so sure about that," Schefter said on ESPN Radio this morning, of the assumption that the Redskins will take a tackle. "It's the obvious pick and I think they have some things up their sleeve, is my guess."

Schefter also said the Redskins would like to trade down.

"Washington is interested in moving back if they can find a team that is looking to move up, but so far that has not been the case," he said. "They're not able to find a trade partner."

If they can't find a trade partner in the next 12 hours, they'll need to make their pick. Everyone thinks that pick will be an offensive tackle. But maybe everyone is wrong. Or maybe the Redskins just want everyone to think they're wrong as they continue to shop the pick.

Posted by: mack1 | April 22, 2010 8:39 AM | Report abuse

cl, there's no problem with doing draft profiles leading up the draft...the problem is profiling players that the Redskins will most likely not pick. Starting off with the top rated tackles is wise, then working your way to some of the other players the Skins had in for visits. Starting of with Suh and McCoy (who will likely be off the board by #4 anyway) is what's "straight tart".

But we completely agree on Brees going down...I'm not superstitious at all, but this Madden curse is for real.

That's crazy to waste a pick on an unproven kid out of college. We should trade the #4 pick to Oakland for Shane Lechler. Guy averaged 51 yards last year (partly reflecting that he was usually kicking from inside his own 30). We'll be set at this position for the next ten years, and Oakland values speed so they'd like to draft a punter who can run a 4.7 40.

more rumblings out of St Louis that they cant afford to select Bradford.
Makes sense to me, or else they would of signed him by now. Similar to first picks in past Drafts.

Just hope the Skins are not working a Deal with the Rams..

If I had to pick from the two.. Bradford and Clausen.. definitely Clausen.. pro set background and much more durable. Bradford has an "Alex Smith" smell. Plus Bradford's surgery will not last its first NFL full speed sack. Not to mention a very a game ending concussion a few years ago.

Redskins surprise could be move up for Bradford
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on April 22, 2010 9:07 AM ET
The Redskins' draft surprise could be the move we thought they would make months ago.

AOL's Dan Graziano reports that the Redskins are still in negotiations with the Rams to possibly trade up to the No. 1 overall pick in an effort to draft Sam Bradford.

PFT hears that the Browns are still more likely than the Redskins to make such a move.

Still, this isn't the first we've heard of Mike Shanahan's appreciation for Bradford. We heard earlier this offseason they wanted to deal for Bradford, but wasn't convinced it was possible. They made the trade for Donovan McNabb because it was a sure thing.

In that scenario, Bradford would play behind McNabb for the remaining year on McNabb's contract. The Redskins don't have many other picks to give up, so veterans Albert Haynesworth and LaRon Landry could be part of the deal.

The Rams remain the favorite to wind up with Bradford, but their unwillingness to negotiate a contract before the draft has allowed them to entertain all possibilities on draft. And cause some folks to wonder how much they really want to take him.

For the Rams to want to move, they would have to take a lot less than they would have in the past.

Wow...Herm Edwards just said on SportsCenter that if he's the Steelers, he's calling the Skins to see if he can trade Big Ben for McNabb.

Good to see his "Boy, I shoulda thought that thru a little better" approach to coaching also translates to his broadcasting career...

Posted by: brownwood26 | April 22, 2010 9:13 AM | Report abuse

Skins would have been better off not getting McNabb.. trading those picks to Baltimore for Gaither.. and drafting Clausen at number 4. In 2 to 3 years McNabb will be about done while Clausen will be entering his prime (and it's not like the Skins have a good chance, even with McNabb, to win a Super Bowl by then) McNabb was a short term fix to a position that needs a long term solution...

CL, that one falls in the 'so bad it's good' category.

Trading up for Bradford? Oye. If it's true the Rams can't afford him and we want him that bad, we should make them pick someone else so he'll fall to us at #4.

Trading up is a kindergarten ninja move.

Only way I'd advocate a trade up to get Bradford is if (1) the Rams are so desperate to save money that they pull a straight swap of picks and we give them nobody else on top of the #4, and (2) we can re-trade McNabb for whatever we gave up to get him in the first place.

So essentially what I'm saying is that it'd be dumb as sh** to trade up to get Bradford.

Posted by: psps23 | April 22, 2010 9:57 AM | Report abuse

finally the day is here. No way to trade down unless the Rams pass on Bradford and if then count on the Browns to make a move up. Only way we can make anything happen is if we include AH, LL, JC17,Rocky in the deal. We might not have draft picks but we sure have players we can move for draft picks. I still believe the Rams are still talking to us about a potential deal which I hope includes their FS.

4th Rd - OG/QB

5th Rd - QB/OG

5th Rd - LB/DE

unless they start stock piling picks which is hard

Whoever came up with the phrase, "most NFL ready quarterback," should try to collect some royalties cause it seems like it gets out there and then just gets repeated over and over again. Didn't clausen have a game last year with like 4 INTs and a couple of fumbles? That's against a college defense. How is that NFL ready.
