Redskins take a tight end with 174th overall pick in draft

With the 174th overall pick, the Redskins selected tight end Dennis Morris from Louisana Tech.

He's a tight end who had mostly flown under the radar before the draft. In fact, he was not invited to the NFL Scouting Combine and wasn't included among the top tight end prospects in the draft guide put out by the NFL Communication Department.

Morris is listed at 6-foot-2, 265 pounds and it's believed that he could prove versatile enough to line up as an H-back. Morris had 38 receptions for 623 yards and 12 touchdowns last season for Louisana Tech. During his career, he had 70 receptions for 1,144 yards and 16 touchdowns. In a 30-28 loss to Fresno State on Nov. 21, he had a career-high 7 catches for 131 yards and three touchdowns.

The addition of Morris means the Redskins will carry at least five players into camp who are listed as tight ends. He joins Chris Cooley, Fred Davis, Lee Vickers and Sean Ryan. The draft pick came from the Miami Dolphins, who originally acquired it from Redskins as part of Jason Taylor trade in 2008. Miami sent it back to Washington this afternoon, along with the Dolphins' 219th overall pick in the seventh round, in exchange for the Redskins' 163rd pick.

The Redskins have two picks remaining, the 208th and the 219th, both in the seventh round.

Got something....

01/07/2010 - Louisiana Tech's Dennis Morris was named the top tight end in the nation by the College Football Performance Awards Thursday. The honor comes after a stellar senior season in which Morris was also named an All-American. Morris finished his senior year at LA Tech with 38 catches for 623 yards and he had a national-leading 12 receiving touchdowns among tight ends this season. Morris will be one of 20 Division I-FBS players honored by the College Football Performance Awards when they make the official announcement on Jan. 11, 2010. The awards will be announced coinciding with the re-launching of their website at CollegeFootballPerformance.com. The purpose of the College Football Performance Awards is to provide the most scientifically rigorous conferments in college football. Recipients are selected exclusively based upon objective scientific rankings of the extent to which individual players increase the overall effectiveness of their teams. As prominent scholars from a wide variety of disciplines note, CFPA eliminates the politics and biases that vitiate balloting-based awards. Furthermore, CFPA is the only awards organization to receive praise from both Republican and Democratic White House officials for promoting objectivity and fairness in college football. - Louisiana Tech football

I'm looking forward to Shanahan's press conference when he explains why they drafted this guy. I'll keep an open mind until then.

Can't say I understand this pick. I've never heard of this guy, but it certainly doesn't seem to be a position of need. I was hoping for a Shanny-type hidden gem of a RB here.

catching up, and I'll eat some cow for dissing the Raiders rumor on an earlier thread... although 4th in 2012, not a 5th & 7th this year. now we know what JC is worth. not much.

TE is a little puzzling, but this is gravy time. we got our potato already.

Ahhh yes the Redskins continue the trend of drafting a DISPROPORTIONATE amount of TE's & Safeties as the key to winning superbowls.

That's right just keep drafting TE's and Safeties to get us to the promised land. F-ing Morons !!

Posted by: OG_Barno | April 24, 2010 2:14 PM | Report abuse

Wow! I'm excited about this pick. The skins had to piss another precious draft pick down the drain. We already have 2 Pro-Bowl type TEs on the team and Mel Kiper and NFL. com and SI don't even have a profile on him. I guarantee they could have picked him up tomorrow as a free agent. The OL still sucks and we waste another pick on a TE. What gives????????????

I agree, mac2j, because with Cooley and Davis on the roster this pick makes no sense at all. I thought maybe if he was a blocking TE but here's the comment from Scouts,Inc on ESPN.com--
"Morris is an undersized tight end, who will play an H-back role. Won't be a big contributor as a run blocker, but can make plays in the passing game due to his athleticism and above-average ball skills."

I wish we had Ozzie Newsome as our GM.
I would pay him the top money b/c he is the GM

A Fu$K!NG TE?? The only position that we are legit at and we go TE? Arthur Moats, commonly referred to as a great late round pick, was available as was DE Hardy out of Mississippi. Even an O lineman would have been better than a 4th TE. Cooley, Davis, then we signed Ryan from KC and then this kid not even invited to the combine. Piss poor.

Posted by: RedCherokee | April 24, 2010 2:21 PM | Report abuse

Dwyer is the kind of guy Shanahan could draft late in a draft and turn into a pro bowler.

There are a couple solid safety's still out there but only one FS really of any top end skill. Offensive line is pretty thin now for zone blockers. Still some solid CB's left. Surprised Tony Pike is still available. He could be a great QB one day if he gets a little thicker. One very good WR still out there (Webb)

Finally this draft is thinning out. Deepest draft I have ever followed.

Posted by: nomad4 | April 24, 2010 2:17 PM

This takes it as the stupidest post of the day. Your idea of "finding talent" is apparently taking the top rated guy off Mel Kiper or Mike Mayock's board.

This pick exemplifies finding talent. A sixth-round, off-the-radar stud who wasn't even invited to the combine (and who you've never heard of) is what it means to "find talent."

There might be a lot wrong with this pick, but you can't say that they aren't finding talent.

Posted by: League-Source | April 24, 2010 2:24 PM | Report abuse

Before you crap on the pick, watch the youtube video that has been posted.

He is an amazing blocker that consistently gets to the second level. A couple of highlights of him taking on 2 defenders on special teams.

As a receiver, he led the league with 12 TDs this past year. His most impressive highlight includes a very athletic catch against first round pick Kyle Wilson.

My take is he replaces Mike Sellers as our future FB. Love the pick, I was pretty hysterical before watching the youtube video.

I had so much hope for this regime change, but this is the most catastrophic "rebuilding" attempt I have ever seen.

First, we change to 3-4, thereby pissing off our most expensive player, and making several other key members of our deepest unit (the d-line) redundant, and creating a problem at the previously solid position of LB, because Jim Haslett says so. We then fail to trade any of the newly-expendable players for picks. (granted, Carriker was a good pickup, and this Riley guy sounds OK.)

Second, we address the decline of Clinton Portis by signing two other declining RBs. We then fail to draft any decent young prospects, despite their availability.

Third, we trade away yet more draft picks for a good but declining QB, whilst we are still at least 2 years from being contenders. This simulatenously scuttles any prospect of drafting a decent project QB.

Fourth, we half-heartedly address our appalling O-line by drafting the 2nd-best tackle available. For some reason, it seems we're gonna spend another season hearing about how our o-line "isn't really that bad" when none of them would start on any decent team.

Fifth, we don't make any effort to improve or secondary, which means another season of watching Landry bite on every double move and pump fake, and Rogers dropping INTs.

Don't even get me started about some of the other issues which we didn't have the ability to address this offseason.

We will be lucky to win 4 games this season. I doubt we will be competitive for another 3.It hurts so badly to be a fan of this team right now...

ProFootballFocus lists Jammal Brown as a -9.0 for 2008, and a -10.6 for 2007. He doesn't even get a listing for 2009 because he was injured all year. By contrast, Joe Thomas gets rated highest, at 35. Comparable LTs at -9 are: our friend Flozell Adams; Sam Baker in Atlanta; and a ham sandwich, likely in D.C....

You know when the Raiders coach get fired next year Campbell will have to learn yet ANOTHER offensive system after learning a new system this year. haha

Morris looks pretty decent. He should be a force of special teams and might be a replacement for Mike Sellars.

He looks like a pretty decent blocker, but he also looks pretty quick. He might be useful in the red-zone. He seems to have pretty decent hands and good vertical. He has also played out the slot.

If we didn't already have two really good tight-ends I'd be really pleased, but I would rather see more o-linemen. Maybe they weren't kidding when they said they were happy with the o-line we've got.

I am just praying he is the next Shannon Sharpe (drafted in the seventh round) Otherwise, we've just added depth to a position of strength rather than trying to fill one of our many glaring needs.

The jets are releasing a guard on Monday which will be the first of many OL (and other positions) to be cut between now and preseason. OL will be taken care of through FA signings or other trades. Patience, peeps, patience.

What do you guys think for the 7th Round?

In my dreams Jamar Chaney (ILB) or Syd'quan Thompson (C) are still there but that's probably wishful thinking.

Posted by: mac2j | April 24, 2010 2:41 PM | Report abuse

Good luck to Jason Campbell, who was dragged through the mud and somehow, he remained humble and professional. Don't torch us when we play Oakland.

Posted by: vterlep | April 24, 2010 2:42 PM | Report abuse

Hey, if he can play FB now, then this IS a good pick.

And a #4 in 2012 why all of the complaining?
That is good for us because we are going to need picks in a few years to replace the aged veterans we have picked up this year, folks.

Posted by: RedskinRay1 | April 24, 2010 2:42 PM | Report abuse

Just saw Jason on NFL Network..Maybe not the best fit here, but definitely a class act..May the Force Be With You in Oakland, rock 'dem punks!!

Posted by: Salinas1 | April 24, 2010 2:06 PM | Report abuse

I second that. We must trust in Shannallen no matter how ridiculous their pick appears. Those are the rules. Hopefully, they have something useful planned for him (e.g. blocking TE or FB).

wow...is all the hating conditioned by the Vinnie era?? shake it off. That's all over. amazing how many people here know more than Mike and Kyle Shanahan and Bruce Allen... why aren't NFL teams calling you guys?... the new crew is doing just fine on limited picks... they havent even put on the pads in practice and already we're 4-12 again?...yikes....Good job by the new group...Go Skins!!

Posted by: NYskinsfan2 | April 24, 2010 2:44 PM | Report abuse

The guys on ESPN have yet to even mention this pick, I don't think they know what to make of it either. So this guys may make a pretty good H-Back/FB.. but really? They could found a player like that as an undrafted free agent or a low 7th... Probably even the same guy.

This was a reach , plenty of talent still on the board that would have made much more sense. A pick like this, plus the crap trade they made with Oakland and today is feeling more and more like Cerrato snuck back into the draft room.

When the Redskins are 1st and goal from the Giants 1 yard line, I am going to be glad this Morris kid is in our backfield. He also just made our offensive line better. You cannot compare him to what Fred Davis does.

likewise... but sounds like the Shanahans are ok (just ok, maybe not stoked) with the OL now that our new LT is in place. plus there is still plenty of room for moves before camp and pre-season.

regarding TE, it is unclear whether he'll actually line up at that position... or even if he makes the roster. it's just a late-round pick.

everyone now, all together.... take a big deep breath of fresh air, have a beer, cop some prescription meds, roll in the hay, or do whatever it takes to chill.

Morris is possibly a rookie starter at FB. Upgrade over Sellers. Can block bigtime and can catch and make plays down field.

If you just look at him as a TE it doesn't make sense, but he will play fullback.

Here's his write up in OURLADS draft guide:
Two-year starter. Projects to an H-back/fullback/tight end/special teams player. A hand catching receiver that will reach out and extend for the ball. Good adjust to catch an off target pass. Has the ability to make the great "circus" type catch. Caught a touchdown pass over Boise State's Kyle Wilson. Lines up as a slot and wide receiver to get a mismatch at times. Explosive on his base blocks. Will contribute on special teams. Gets separation by using his strength, quickness, and cutting ability. Late draft choice that would be a steal as a tight end. Had 70 catches, 1144 yards, and 16 TDs over his career. Not invited to the combine. Sixth/Seventh round. (Arm length: 32 1/2 inches Hand size: 9 1/4 inches Bench Press: 225 x 20 Vertical jump: 29 inches)
OK so this looks a bit better. I still don't see the need at TE but perhaps as a fullback and help on special teams would certainly be welcome. Perhaps competition for Mike Sellers since Shanahan wants to see that everywhere.
