Safety Eric Berry completes visit with Redskins

Former Tennessee star safety Eric Berry completed a two-day visit with the Redskins and is scheduled to return to Knoxville for a little break before resuming his draft tour shortly, he said Thursday afternoon.

It was very nice," Berry said in a phone interview. "I got to meet the GM, Bruce Allen, and Coach [Mike] Shanahan, which was cool. Whenever you're a young player coming into the league, and you get a chance to talk with someone like Coach Shanahan, who has accomplished a lot, that's definitely something you want to do."

In their mock drafts, some talent evaluators have linked Berry with the Kansas City Chiefs at No. 5 pick overall - one spot behind the Redskins. In the 2007 draft, Washington took LaRon Landry sixth overall.

"I got a good vibe from the coaches and just being out here," Berry said. "And I grew up a big Sean Taylor fan, so it was good to come out and take a look around. They talked about how they would use me if they drafted me, and I definitely think I could be comfortable with what they want to do."

I think Taylor Mays is the best safety in the draft. If he had come out last year, he would have been the 1st FS picked. Of course he struggled in his last year at USC. They lost all their starting LBs and a DT to the NFL. Taylor had to concentrate on the run much more and his coverage suffered. But any safety's coverage would with a lame front 7.

Yeah thats fine if we can trade landry for another 1st round pick and thats not happening. Whens this guy gonna give us some useful info? Anyways we need a first round talent at LT and i like Mccoy in the second or pouncey if he slips. I would be ok with a trade of landry for Pouncey too. Lefevour looks like he could be a steal if he slips to the fourth. poop

Why it's not obvious to everyone here that Baltimore can't afford two LT salaries on their roster? Both Gaither and Oher make LT money and why pay a RT, LT money? Didn't we just hire Bruce to avoid bad salary cap positioning such as what the Ravens have just put themselves in?

We get the best OT at 4, trade up if we have to with our 2nd to get Colt or Tebow, sign Gaither , (but keep next year's one for Ingram), fill in slots as they become available..

The Tarheels are gonna comb those NITs right outta their hair after a louse-y year following a championship (drumcrash)...

Posted by: frak | April 1, 2010 5:58 PM | Report abuse

What the Skins should do is this. Trade the 49ers for their first round picks (2) and their third round pick (which the Redskins have none). Then, draft TWO Offensive Tackles in Round 1 and Tony Pike in round 2. QB and his protection all sewn up nicely. Also, they should make a play for Shawn Andrews. He's 27 and a great guard!

Landry would be moved to strong safety, and Berry would become the free safety, with some combination of Horton, Reed D., and Moore backing them up, so they wouldn't trade Landry if they drafted Berry. In fact, if this guy's as advertised, then we'd have a pretty darn good defensive backfield.

He's already got 3 years of experience. We want a guy that's got none. This team is in a rebuild mode and will be rebuilding for a couple of years so it would make sense to just draft a rookie left tackle and not have to worry about left tackle for 10 years instead of needing one again in 7 years.

risa,

i happen to be white and also agree with you. the pro bowl is a popularity contest first though, not soley judged on stats. Cooley sucks at blocking, but catches everything thrown his way. He does not run fast and is therefore often caught for a short gain. I think if he garners any value, we trade him for extra picks and keep davis who equally sucks at blocking, but is faster running.

Wow dat was eazy. You are seriously a clueless idiot League. You are proving my point and you don't even realize it.

If I remember correctly, "Rotfrau" made racist comments against blacks.

I just made a racist(and true) comment about Chris Cooley.

Yet you say we are one in the same poster, despite the fact that I said I'm african american.

Obviously you don't believe I'm black, so case in point, only white people can be racist, not minorities. And I'm clearly using it to my advantage, while educating your clueless republican azz!

Like I mentioned earlier, if my comments about Cooley were so "ignorant", where are all the black RI posters calling me out.

Risa, I sure as hell hope YOU don't vote for the pro-bowl based on race. That's piss poor. I know I never have, nor never will because I view myself as an American...period.
As far as you being "African"-American...whatever. I'll bet you couldn't pinpoint exactly how many generations ago someone in your family was actually born on that continent. I'll bet you've never stepped foot on the continent and know far less about the history and current political activities going on there than I do. So, why all the "pride" of including African as part of your self-description? I don't refer to myself as European-American...I'm just "American". Why aren't you? Root your fellow American on and root for whoever is best? There's no need or room for segregation. It's just demeaning to us all and breaks us up/down.
Now...I'm all for saying that the other 31 teams in the NFL suck because that's just fun. So, in that regard, I'm willing to stand next to you, arm in arm, boldly singing "Hail to the Redskins" (let's not even get into the racist name of the team....that's to be determined by a court system)

Usually I don't involve myself with this sort of convo...

*sike*

I think that you're some troll/regular with either two things in mind:

1)To play on the, girl Lisa_R's screen name.

or

2)To get people hating African-Americans. Which means that you're in fact a racist turd who in fact isn't black at all. Or you could be some high school who can use the family computer in the dining room now that you're on spring break.

That's just my opinion. At least I'm taking the bait, so....

I'm not going to say that you're bold statement is correct, but there may be a little something to what you're trying to express.

It's simple: People for the most part gravitate to what they know, understand, and what they find compatible. It's human nature to so -- nothing wrong with that at all -- which is why you'll for instance find a white person in a Chris Cooley jersey more often than a black person. Or people marrying within their race, or a circle of friends who are for the most part of the same race.

I even see it amongst Cowboy fans. Of course EVERYONE wears the QBs jersey, no matter the team, but while the Romo jersey is neutral among Cowboy fans, I see white cats rocking a Witten Jersey, and black folks with a Ware jersey.

It's just how it is. And to me it's cool. Sort of like the 'Bird' and 'Jordan' jerseys back in the late 80s. Everyone knew why more than likely you'd see a white cat rocking a 'Bird' and a black in a 'Jordan' jersey. I always seen it as some silent-silent game among black & white sports fans.

But this:

Speak for yourself.

I know I catch a lot of flack up here because how I carry it and get into these stupid debates like this and usually I take a pro-African American stance, but I'm in no way shape or form a racist. I could go on in all the ways that I'm not but that'll be playing into the "I'm not racist because..." stereotype.

To say that black people in the US deserve to be racist is just disappointing, for real...

It's hard to argue and fight against inequality when you're saying stupid sh*t like that. It's like saying that a woman whose suffered from spousal abuse has carte blanche to kill random men.

Please, don't say things like this. You're make it easy for people to accuse a person of playing the race card when it is warranted, therefore giving the appearance that ALL minorities do it just because.

Not really arguing that as much as trying to address our crushing needs at OT and the severe consequences awaiting us if we fail to effectively address it.

Both of them are top ten picks, so I don't care about the "value" argument here. Close enough for hand grenades if you know what I mean.

To me, OT is more important than FS. We can get a FS elsewhere more easily. Don't want to spend the #4 pick on a safety anyway. I don't think his value is soooo much higher that it outweighs what we gain in grabbing a starting LT.

This is where JReid gets his insider info. LaCanfora never left and still peddles his Redskin hate.

http://blogs.nfl.com/2010/04/01/redskins-eye-qb-prospects-but-which-one-will-they-take/

With three weeks left until draft day, there’s no shortage of smokescreens and misdirection. The Redskins, who hold the fourth overall pick, are right in the middle of all the speculation.

NFL Network’s Jason La Canfora reported Thursday that while Notre Dame QB Jimmy Clausen could garner some interest in D.C., the player to watch might be Texas QB Colt McCoy.

La Canfora said the Redskins spent a lot of time with McCoy at Texas’ pro day Wednesday and cautioned reading too much into the fact the team hasn’t scheduled a personal workout with the QB. After all, Redskins coach Mike Shanahan never conducted a personal workout with his last QB pick, Jay Cutler.

While rumors have been flying that the Redskins could try to trade for the Rams’ No. 1 overall pick, then select Oklahoma QB Sam Bradford, La Canfora doesn’t see that happening.

Clausen’s connection to the Redskins is notable, though. Former Redskins personnel honcho and Dan Snyder confidante Vinny Cerrato is very close to Clausen and still could have the owner’s ear, according to La Canfora.

Would you rather watch a LeBron James ad or a Peyton Manning ad?

You have Tiger Woods and we have John Daly. Okay, that's a draw.

Sorry for prolonging this.

it's like i said, this opinion seems to be the majority on RI, and i know what a pathetic joke the OL is as it stands. but, man, i really don't want to end up with Robert Gallery East, y'know?

i don't hate the cleveland cavs and i do HATE the colts. James wins that one.

i'd still rather watch tiger play golf than daly being a drunk, though.

so that's two black fellas over two white fellas. do i have to turn in my aryan brotherhood card now?

I'll never forget the astrology on the night before the draft last year...I was brushing aside the giant alien arachnid that kept building a web outside my porch, when I looked up...A brilliant red shooting star flamed across the night sky...The next day, Orakpo fell down to us...Stranger things have happened...

that would depend on what your definition of normal is. far as i can tell tangents like this are 100% the norm during the offseason.

Higgins? Never met the guy. Not looking to do so, either.

The Lads? Lots of Da Bradahs keep a Lad or a pit on a chain for show. They think they are hard, LOL

Brennan? The locals want him to do well and there is always interest about him. They all love any Hawaii guy who makes it to the show. Just heard a review of the Hawaii pro day that was held in California to piggy back behind the USC pro day. ALL THE PLAYERS' performances were reviewed ad nauseum. Agent call ins to follow, but i made it home and missed out. Bummer, haha. Personally, I like having CB5 on the Redskins because it exponentially increases local coverage of the Redskins, and it helps keep the cowboy noise to a dull roar.

I have a theory that the Shanahan's next QB is already on the roster wearing #5. I know its a long shot and many will think i'm both stupid and crazy, but I'm interested to see what happens in the draft. I think the kid has got the moxy. Zorn didn't want a playmaker at QB, he wanted a no risk game manager. That ain't Brennan's area of excellence. If Redskins go QB at 4 or 37, its sayonara CB5. If they don't, its open season for Colt on the starting gig. It will be his to win. Sexy Rexy is the second coming of Collins, and JC is not the Shanny's long term answer. Going forward, its CB5, or a kid who's name will get called on Thursday or Friday night.

So, we'll see.

Still waiting for an Insider review of who is at The Park everyday working and studying.

Say do you know GEORGE PIERCE? Great fellow.

Eh, Berry Schmerry. Sure he is good and all, but we need help everywhere, especially QB and OL. He is not a priority. Thanks for coming out, and enjoy your career in KC.

"I got a good vibe from the coaches and just being out here," Berry said. "And I grew up a big Sean Taylor fan, so it was good to come out and take a look around."

gotta love that, my friends.

Anyone else see Landry on NFL network Thursday in the weight room? He made Rich Eisen gasp.

Dude looks like he goes at least 225 and more like a linebacker than a safety. Hmmmmm.

Vinny loves Clausen?!

This should have everyone screaming for Okung!!!!

Posted by: pabrian2003 | April 2, 2010 2:36 AM | Report abuse

I have been thinking Shanny likes McCoy as well....

JLaC is just doing the same thing I'm doing....geussing....I wouldn't mind if we are both right..

..I highly doubt the Clausen will exude what Shanny is looking for on his last go around......

...But best believe Kyle will have eqaul, if not greater influence on this decesion.....If it isn't just Kyle's pick all together.....

Book it!

(You know Kyle Shanny went to and played @ Texas, so he has all the info he would need about Colt. Now, did JLaC give you that tidbit??.....but keep calling me crazy...)

This is questionable. I'm thinking that you had used up all your cheers, plus some that you'd borrowed, when Vinny was fired. You're probably still living on borrowed cheers and might be running from a collection agency if they draft Okung at #4.

Posted by: League-Source | April 2, 2010 5:32 AM | Report abuse

True LS...I kinda merged everything into one triumphant cheer since we already knew Zorn would be fired.

everyone knows that it's gonna, take at least two years to fix the skins offensive line, but nobody is better at playing poker when it comes to the draft than Mike shanahan, that's why he keeps bringing a lot of different, players at different positions, besides right after the draft ends most of the free agent offensive linemans, want to come to the skins anyways because of the fact they have a chance to start simple as that.

Posted by: rmnkevorkian | April 2, 2010 7:41 AM | Report abuse

A smart front office keeps you thinking coming up to and during the draft. That's what they're doing and it will work to the club's benefit.
