Shanahan tells Morris he'll be used at fullback and H-back as well

If you heard about the Redskins' sixth-round pick of Dennis Morris and wondered why the team needed another tight end, you probably weren't alone. But we can provide a bit more clarification.

Morris, a Louisiana Tech product, said on a conference call with reporters this afternoon that Redskins Coach Mike Shanahan told him he can expect to line up as a tight end, fullback and H-back.

"I feel like I can play all of them," Morris said. "I've been playing all of them since I've been in college, so it wouldn't be a change."

Morris said he'd been in contact with the Redskins the past several weeks and though he did not have a pre-draft visit to Redskins Park, he had been talking regularly with the team's tight ends coach, Jon Embree.

Morris was a surprise pick to many because the Redskins didn't have noticeable need at the tight end position and because Morris was somewhat of an unknown entity. He was not invited to the NFL Scouting Combine in February.

"I was disappointed that I didn't get invited, but some of the great tight ends and fullbacks in the league right now, some of them didn't get invited," Morris said. "So I just kept my head up, kept working."

Morris said he's 6-foot-2-inches tall and weighs 255 pounds and feels he can contribute on offense for Washington.

"I'm pretty fast for my size and I can catch a lot. i'm pretty aggressive. I like to block. So I feel like I can help the team out a lot by playing the role of a true tight end, a true fullback, H-back, something like that."

Outside of the Williams pick, this draft looks the same as the Vinny days.

I had so much hope for this regime change, but this is the most catastrophic "rebuilding" attempt I have ever seen.

First, we change to 3-4, thereby pissing off our most expensive player, and making several other key members of our deepest unit (the d-line) redundant, and creating a problem at the previously solid position of LB, because Jim Haslett says so. We then fail to trade any of the newly-expendable players for picks. (granted, Carriker was a good pickup, and this Riley guy sounds OK.)

Second, we address the decline of Clinton Portis by signing two other declining RBs. We then fail to draft any decent young prospects, despite their availability.

Third, we trade away yet more draft picks for a good but declining QB, whilst we are still at least 2 years from being contenders. This simulatenously scuttles any prospect of drafting a decent project QB.

Fourth, we half-heartedly address our appalling O-line by drafting the 2nd-best tackle available. For some reason, it seems we're gonna spend another season hearing about how our o-line "isn't really that bad" when none of them would start on any decent team.

Fifth, we don't make any effort to improve or secondary, which means another season of watching Landry bite on every double move and pump fake, and Rogers dropping INTs.

Don't even get me started about some of the other issues which we didn't have the ability to address this offseason.

We will be lucky to win 4 games this season. I doubt we will be competitive for another 3.It hurts so badly to be a fan of this team right now...

Posted by: whymusttheskinssuck | April 24, 2010 2:27 PM | Report abuse

Well, let me guess, you know more about defense than JHaslett? And you know more about offense than Shanny? Right.

After many years of poor management, you think Shanny can turn it all around in one year? Give me a break.

And I will take that bet that we only win 4 games again. Shanny and a real staff will ensure that.

Posted by: frediefritz | April 24, 2010 3:09 PM | Report abuse

If there are no other moves at the QB position, it not only means that Rex G is the vet back-up, somebody Kyle knows and has worked with before and knows the system, but it also might mean that Shanny is content with having Colt Brennan as the young developmental project. I can live with that, especially if McNabb stays healthy.

Can we stop praising the pick that nobody has heard of because of a you tube video where he is blocking against the WAC elite of Hawaii, Utah State, and Idaho. He may ultimately work out, but when they pass on guys that could have helped out in the return game or a rb of the future this pick was a reach. Sellers had a bad year last season like just about everybody else on this team, but wasnt he a pro bowler a few years ago?

I think Syd'Quan Thompson (most reps of any corner at the combine - maybe a safety in NFL) or Jamar Chaney (ILB) would be awesome in the 7th.

Cult of Colt lives... and breathes new life? This was my sleeper (non) move of the draft: rolling to camp with DMac, Sexy, Cult, and Bartel with Cult being the groom for the future guy who challenges Sexy for lead clip board and first in duties.

Some of you are "Madden" GM's...you don't rebuild an offensive line in one offseason...especially if you have drafted on 3 in the last 10 years.

What you do is get the most out of the backups you have and fill in the pieces with free agents and guys that are cut from other teams.

To me...one of the biggest gaffs was letting Bridges go...HE WAS A STARTER FOR ARIZONA ON THE RIGHT SIDE...we'd have been set!
