No-Trade Answer

Andre Carter is the guy. He really wanted to be here when he signed and wanted to find a home.

Not the Skins are trying to trade anyone before Monday's deadline, but on the off chance they did ever want to deal him,. well, he'd have to consent to it and essentially approve it.

He looks like he's ready for a very strong season ... which brings up another interesting fact about his contract.

Andre is due a $2.4 million roster bonus July 1 2008, and then a $2.5 million roster bonus the following two Julys and a $3 million roster bonus each of the final two years of his deal. (the Redskins have the right to guarantee that bonus every year as well, and thus prorate it over the deal rather than have it all count against the cap).

His base salary in 2008 remains reasonable - $920,000, and his cap numbers are manageable throughout.

But in essence the dude was gambling on himself, and you've got to like that. If he produces the Skins will be real cool with picking up those big bonuses every year, and if they thought about wavering on it, he was in essence gambling he could get more elsewhere.

With a big bonus like that every year, it kind of almost turns it into a series of one year deals (yeah, every NFL contract is that to some degree, but usually there is just one big nut to swallow in year 3 or 4, and not one every year.

He was willing to roll with the low base salaries the Skins like to use and he took $9 million guaranteed to sign wheras the rest of his free agent class (Randle El, Lloyd, Arche Deluxe) got $10 million.

So in the first 5 years of his deal Carter, if he's here, would get his $9 million in signing/otion bonuses, about $7 million in salary and $7.4 million in roster bonuses.

Also, Randle El has a $1.5 million roster bonus due in 2008, Daniels a $1.1 million roster bonus, Betts a $2 million roster bonus, Rocky a $545,000 roster bonus. yeah, that covers 2008.

I might give JC vets minimum... maybe Portis, too. But yeah, otherwise I agree. No other players on the 'Skins could make starter on any other really good team.

Wait, wait, wait...I don't have a no trade clause. WTF? I need to call my agent.

On another note, there are a lot of prognosticators saying Washington will upset Green Bay this weekend and a few national sports writers are already jumping on the bandwagon of Washington being this year's Saints.

I don't like this. The Skins are potentially good and Gibbs is a better coach when he has a team like this that the critics say will fail. They must remain under the radar and continue to be an underdog...like the whole "no respect" thing from the two '80s SB winners.

Just sayin'

noone from tampa, I have to say that on first perusal of the list, I thought we didn't carry a kicker on the 2001 roster. So THAT explains all those times we went for two.

Miami has 0 wins 19th in offense

[Lets not be...]

A bit like the kettle, huh? What is your agenda? What does the yardage rankings of the 'skins opponents have to do with the fact that their 3-1?

Try these 'top ten' offenses: Cincinnati 1 win (rank 4), Denver 2 wins (5th), Cleveland 2 wins (8th), and Oakland 2 wins (9th). With a combined record of 7-11.

Moreover the four opponents the 'skins have faced have averaged 331.75 yards per game on offense; basically facing the 17th ranked offense each week. Yet, the Skins defense is number three only giving up 267.5 yards a game. Do the math and viola - if the Redskins opponents offense did not face the 'skins D, they averaged 348.52 yards/game which would put them right between Cleveland and Oakland at NINTH in offense. [A ridiculous 17 yards a game that somehow makes the difference between mediocre and good.]

Again, the stats mean nothing but the 'skins opponents may have collectively been as good as Cleveland and Oakland.

Posted by: bangkokben | October 12, 2007 4:49 AM | Report abuse

One more thought for the kettle:

The Dallas Cowboys have faced the incredible task of shutting down the offenses of the New York Giants (16), Miami Dolphins (19), Chicago Bears (30), St. Louis Rams (27) and the Buffalo Bills (31). Still, even facing such powerhouses the Dallas d (intentional lowercase) is ranked eight GIVING UP 285.4 yards/game to a group that collectively averages 283.84.

Hmmmm, the 'boys d actually GIVES up more to these sorry offenses.

Posted by: bangkokben | October 12, 2007 5:05 AM | Report abuse

I don't have stats but there has only been one good half of football played by a QB vs. the redskins D. And our offense helped Eli out.

Don't need stats to look at our guys fly around and their duds dropping balls and poop all over the field.

nicely done.

And to the talk of defenses, our d is better than the girls... and in the NFC East you run the ball and stop the run, which apparently the girls do niether really well.

Only the Pats and Colts can be pass first offenses and actually make it to the SB, and that is b/c of their defense.

if your going to get into a stat battle make sure you dont SPIN!!

Skins have played 1 less game then Boys so of course they should be ahead in Defense an actually only 5 spots ahead shows you how much better of a D Boys have!! When theyve played same amount of games then put your stats up!!

Just like comparing the offenses which would not be fair to skins the 1 game difference would be in favor of the more games played!!

Compare your stats to teams who have played 4 games like skins!!!

ummm... bangkokben was speaking in averages... which is what the rankings are based on no?

Posted by: Zebra | October 12, 2007 7:46 AM | Report abuse

nope, i re-read it, he was speaking in averages.

and speaking of spin, look at the teams the girls have played (New York Giants (16), Miami Dolphins (19), Chicago Bears (30), St. Louis Rams (27) and the Buffalo Bills (31).)

No real great offenses there save for a on again off again gints team.

so what spin are you trying to add?

Bigfish, that has to be one of our keys this week - that replacement center. But it would make sense that some of the other line positions may be distracted due to his play as well.

So I hope there are some aggressive stunts that throw these GB Olinemen back and off the ball!

"The Redskins will likely try to play smash mouth football against the Packers. Clinton Portis (299 yards rushing, 4.5 ypc, 3 TDs) seems to have earned back his starting job and he will take on the Packers linebacking corps. It will be interesting to see how Nick Barnett and A.J. Hawk do against him. The Packers do allow 226.4 yards passing per game so the Redskins might try some long stuff to Santana Moss and some short stuff to TE Chris Cooley.

PREDICTION: This will be a low scoring, physical football game. I like the Packers by a field goal but I wouldn't be surprised if the Redskins sprung as upset here with the way they have been playing this year."

Posted by: Zebra | October 12, 2007 9:35 AM | Report abuse

bigfish,

Good point. Speaking of muffed snaps, one of the only glaring deficiencies on our defense is scooping up fumbles. It was crazy bad last Sunday.

Teams don't lay the ball on the ground very much, but when they do, you simply cannot afford to whiff on a scoop, multiple times, like we did against Detroit. It didn't hurt us last week, but it very easily could in a game like Sunday.

I hope Gregg had everyone on the defense out there scooping up loose balls this week.

Happy birthday, bigfish!

All I want today is to hear something, SOMETHING indicating that this team is fired up, that we'll see the same intensity for sixty minutes that we saw last weekend. Gibbs was ticked off last Friday, and maybe that was indicative of the mood of the team. I want to hear about hunger, and anger, and lust for mayhem.

bigfish, happy birthday (today is also my birthday and I pondered letting the blog know and then thought it was weird so didn't, but here I am... strength in #s.)

That's all I want for my bday too. A big W.

And since my bday corresponds to Clinton Portis, I expect big things from #26.

Basicaaly more towards the center and not lined up directly in front of a guard. so their blocking technique needs to be tight and no mess ups. so a new center could mess up and give griff a lane to the QB.

Posted by: Zebra | October 12, 2007 9:52 AM | Report abuse

And how about that, LaRon turns 23 on Sunday! How about a turnover-TD for LaRon? Catching the first INT from Favre, the record breaker, would be pretty awesome.

Lust for mayhem!

VIGILANCE!

Hail Portis!
Hail BigFish!
Hail Dorf on Basketball!

Hail Skins Win
Hail Cowpatty Loss
Hail Gints Loss (definitely possible)

Nate! I kidnapped the pizza-delivery kid! What choice did I have??

Thanks Nate. Happy B-day Dorf! I pondered whether or not to put it out there also. I came to the conclusion that with all of the other off the wall things I've seen up here a birthday announcement shouldn't be too big of a deal.

I'd also like to see another "swinging souls" speech from Gibbs or someone else today. Maybe Jasno can be the reporter to pi$$ him off today and trigger a similar reaction.

M, why is it that the pats always need to find some reason for them to play hard? They've beat the 'no-respect' card to DEATH.

The pats need to shut up, and just play for once.

The Patroits and Chargers whine the most of any NFL team. The Chargers lately have started to let the play do the talking.

When have the Patriots whined about anything? I've never noticed it and I always thought they have let the play do the talking. That article that was posted is about what the Cowboys coach did or did not say. It has no whining from the Pats mentioned anywhere.

Greg, Pats have been playing pretty well, but if "no respect" theme gives them some extra motivation, what is wrong with that? I am sure that Pats would have come to play hard no matter what, particularly when their opponent has a 5-0 record. But if a coach of the opposing team suggests that Pats did not deserve to win their three Superbowls, it's a slap in the face to the players. By the way, Peter King stands by his report.

If you're not aiming for fancy, Shorebreak (http://www.shorebreakvb.com/) is a good sports bar with very good food. If home base is in north VA Beach (i.e. near Ft Story), it's also pretty close to you.

It's the latest version of that Michael Jordan thing, keeping your edge (even though you've established some kind of dominance) by always feeling aggrieved about this or that perceived slight. Boring, pompous crap, as usual.

Whatevs, I want the Cheatriots to crush the Cowboys on Sunday (giving God a good look at the beating, through that hole in the roof) and keep their tiresome glory party humming along until we head up to Foxboro in two weeks and punch them in the mouths.

Posted by: mmok | October 12, 2007 10:28 AM | Report abuse

M, I live in the area, and the pats are the biggest bunch of whiners out there. They whine about not getting enough attention, they whine about not getting enough respect. They just need to shut up. Brady whines to the Refs ANYTIME anyone comes remotely close to hitting him.

And as far as the whole cheating thing goes, maybe they didn't benefit from it, however when you do something like that, you open yourself up to this type of speculation.

More VA Beach drink info

If you're looking for something fancier and you're not taking dad out for an afternoon drink, I'd also recommend heading up/down the street to Hot Tuna (http://www.hottunavb.com/). More expensive than Shorebreak, but kick ass food and a pretty good bar scene (combo of patio and inside seating).

Have fun with the rents,

Well, as I'm want to do with the bully pulpit, allow me to pontificate.

I think it's pretty revealing that in said Dback article that the players say the improvement in play has to do with the simplification of the scheme and the coaches say it's personnel.

I spouted off all last season and during the off-season that the problem was at Dback and not Dline. I praised the Landry pick and predicted that Dline play would improve as a result.

So hence, I am completely full of myself at the moment. Feel free to ignore me.

I'm thinking Campbell is going to hit Moss deep for a TD this game. Moss is due for a TD since he hasn't had one yet this season. Campbell should have gained a lot of confidence from last weeks game, so I'm liking the chances that he hits a deep TD to Moss.

If, every week, Gibbs decided to blow up and give an inspiring 'swinging souls' speech... nothing bad could come of it.

I got a bouquet of football/Redskins balloons from "Joe Gibbs" today. Which one of you was the thoughtful swinging soul? thanks.

Okay, so yesterday I did a "Stem and Leaf" math lesson and for fun went to NFL.com and used scores from the Redskins last super bowl season as data for practice. They went 14-2 that year and the least amount of points scored was 16 (a win) and the most points they scored was 56 (a Falcons blow-out). They averaged 30.3 points a game and scored 56 TDs that season. Wow. At 3-1, we're on pace for 36 TDs and a 12-4 record. At 21.8 points per game, I'm not sure we're going to meet that. Just talking...
