Now, the Games Are for Real

This may be a holiday weekend -- I had the Metro car to myself and stretched out across four seats! -- but it'll be a busy couple of days at Redskins Park with roster cuts coming today or Saturday, ahead of Saturday's 4 p.m. deadline for setting the 53-man squad.

Jim Zorn will talk to the schlubs at 12:30, but The Post's own self-described schlub, Jasno La Canfora will chat at 11:30.

Ask him about Jason Campbell, the Cult of Colt, the punting competition, music...whatev.

Panic? No way Adam. Haven't even played the first game.

And, I don't think "panic" is appropriate at all this year. Those who would press it had unrealistic expectations for a rookie head coach and a team that had squeaked into the playoffs.

Posted by: talent evaluator | August 29, 2008 9:27 AM | Report abuse

I didn't see it, but it sounds really bad. Should we call this tiraid 'Spurrier Rising'?

Anyway, any update on Kelly? I heard he tweeked his knee again. IR for the kid? That way we can keep Mason, Mix, or another hopeful who had the intelligence to come to camp in camp-ready shape.

Ugh, Cerrato is an IDIOT

There are testing my Redskinsness

Posted by: Devo | August 29, 2008 9:29 AM | Report abuse

But they're not going to contribute this year and will be wasted roster spots.

There you go....but 'no panic' right??

Posted by: Greg | August 29, 2008 9:29 AM | Report abuse

As I've said, I'm concerned about the team and both rookie WR's, but we haven't had ONE game. Is it that difficult to understand?

Posted by: The Truth | August 29, 2008 9:17 AM

I'll guess we'll really have to watch them in practice for the first half of the season to see if they finally "get it." I'm sure the are used to being the best in college and didn't have to work too damn hard for it. Weren't ready for this level. Now that they know, let's see what they do with the knowledge.

lets all try and ignore statements like this:
"I feel like I've let the guys down a little bit," Thomas said, "and I have to keep working and get the trust of the quarterback."

and lets try and just focus on the negative, and preconceived thoughts that many of you already have made up.

Posted by: Disappointed | August 29, 2008 9:34 AM | Report abuse

I agree put M. Kelly on the IR and while you are at it, put Devon Thomas there as well. He has not impressed me at all. That way we can keep the guys who bust their butts and want to play and show they have potential to make it in the league. No excuse for a professional athlete to come to training camp out of shape.

Greg,

I don't see this as panic, but if you do I'm not going to try to convince you otherwise. No one has ever convinced you of anything: you have to convince yourself.

I am disappointed. I'd hoped we could count on them for a contribution in line with their potential, which is greater than some of the guys who will be ahead of them on the depth chart.

Has anyone noticed that we haven't seen the 2-TE formation set with Cooley and Davis this preseason? That's because Zorn is opting not show any of the league some of the things he intends on doing with this offense until the REAL season starts.
If you really look at those plays that were being called last night (outside of that designed roll-out that should have been completed by JC) they were very generic. That being said, they didn't look executing them, but I will wait until week 4 before I begin trashing JC and this offense.

Cerrato's emphasis on drafting pass catchers never looked brilliant and is starting to be written in the history books as a moronic move. We would have been better off with a couple of aging veterans who could have provided Zorn with grown ups.

Most people on this blog had the Skins having a winning season this year - I hope you all now have awakened.

In order to win we must establish the run and stop the run.

Cerrato's drafting did nothing (with the exception of Chad Rheinhart who will not start this season unless someone gets injured)) to help us do either of those things.

Hello all,

I just want to make a statement about JC. He is in a new system that everyone is learning. Give the kid a break. Also, give him credit for all the hard work he put in in the off season. I hear he pretty much lived at Redskin Park. There will be some growing pains with a new coach and system.
Please remember we can not blame JC for all the issues with the offense, high gas prices or even global warming!!!

Posted by: GLFLVER2 | August 29, 2008 9:41 AM | Report abuse

Let me get this straight? You rail against the doomsayers cause it's preseason. Then you make an example of a Saints WR who did nothing last year but has looked good....wait for it....wait for it....in the preseason.

I'm not on the chicken little bandwagon but either the preseason means nothing or it means something but not both.

km, the general rule of thumb among those who actually KNOW, and WORK in the football realm is that you cannot judge a draft until at least the 3rd year.

Cork, who I'm guessing doesn't work in that industry somehow, has transcended all things draft related, and has passed ULTIMATE judgement after 5 pre-season games.

Vinny should get no passes. He drafted a dude with red flags about his knees who now can not get through any of camp or warmups without a problem. The success of this draft is gonna hinge on those guys and so far its not looking good. Tryon should be cut, maybe keep Brooks and the safeties and a project at QB. Reality Check for Hardy Lovers!

This is from the Buffalo newspaper:

Hardy gets start: Rookie second-round pick James Hardy started at wide receiver, making his first preseason appearance since the opener at Washington. He had sat out the past two games with a hamstring injury.

Hardy has had an underwhelming training camp and preseason, mainly because of the injury, but also because he seems to be struggling with the nuances of the offense.

He has not been a standout when he has been able to practice.

"No, no pressure," Hardy said. "I never really feel any pressure. I have high expectations of myself so no one can put extra pressure on me. Even though the hamstring has been a minor setback, I feel it was a test just to make sure that I'm prepared for when the season opener comes and I'll be ready.

te/others

So we're downgrading the RI fan o meter from panic to significant concern (still checking with Tom Ridge for proper color coding; maybe its pepto bismal pink?)

If my first team O laid an egg in its previous game, got called out by the coach, and then generated 14 yards of total offense in its next outing, I'd be very concerned, especially if my team was revamping its offense under a new head coach (i.e. there isn't much/if any other information to go on about how good/bad/indifferent this offense is going to be).

Greg,
I couldn't agree more. The day the Skins drafted these guys I had realistic expectations for them. I thought Thomas would two to three years to develop and I was hoping Kelly would contribute immediately as a redzone target due to his size and hands... maybe 3 or 4 TDs. Now his injury changes that, but these guys stil have a future with this team.

The offense is going to be erratic all season long. Sometimes we will sharp, and other times we will look lost. That is the learning curve that comes with installing a new offense/HC.
That being said, I believe in Zorn. I don't why, but I just do. He will get this thing turned around and I believe we will be in the NFC Championship game as soon as 2010.

Adam,

I think that whether you panic depends entirely on what your expectations for the season are. If you expected 19-0, then panic. If you expected 0-16, then everything's fine.

My own expectations were somewhere in the range of 6-10 to 9-7. I still think they're on track for that. They have a new coach, a new system, and a middling team. They have serious problems of depth. The QB is still a question mark. I think it will be two or three years before they are a serious threat -- if they become a serious threat.

Adam,

I'm going to start to worry when we are no longer undefeated. Like is said even with the poor form I figure we still have 6 or 7 more games we can lose and still make the playoffs.

Jansen, Portis, Randel El, Mike Sellers, Jason Taylor, Anthony Montgomery, Cornelius Griffin, Andre Carter, Marcus Washington, LFB, Sean Spring, Fred Smoot, Rocky Mac and Laron Landry didn't play.

So I think it's safe to say the game was fairly meaningless. Although I am not exactly filled with confidence.

I see Aaron Rogers through a 68 yard TD on his first play last night I guess the Packers are winning the Superbowl.

Pre-Season Stats are important, right Mr. Spurrier?

I blame Fantasy Football.

Shawn Merriman is the only injured player that is NOT a jerk. He will play through his physical limitations, like every player should.

Tom Brady right now is a jerk.

Peyton Manning right now is a jerk.

Hey, why don't we renew our loathing of Michael Wilbon? Does he even follow Redskins football? If so, how could he write this in his column today:

"What Zorn and the Redskins had to settle for was finishing preseason with no serious injuries despite a long camp and five games."

Phillips Daniels went out for the season (and maybe his career) in the first practice, causing us to trade our second round pick to Miami for Jason Taylor. Wasn't this a serious injury?

Someone posted yesterday that when Clinton Portis is injured, tough dots, but when Osi Umeniyoha goes down it's time to shorten the pre-season. We're used to this from the national media, but can't the Post even get the facts straight?

Where are the fact checkers that call Wilbon out on PTI? Cindy, do something about this.

Alex,

Drink some coffee and chill. I figured that one of the regulars would have joined in and posted some humorous thoughts on potential cabinet members. It's been sooo serious in here as of late regarding political posts and I was just trying to lighten the mood.
Now, getting serious, I do think Washington needs fixing. I honestly don't think that Ralph Nadar is someone that can do it though. That's why I hope McCain picks Pawlenty as his running mate (an up and comer and Washington outsider) instead of going the route (Romney or Lieberman). I'm not too thrilled with Obama and definitely not with Biden.

Ever since Wilbon lied in his piece about ST, and refused to admit he was wrong, I don't read him anymore. He's a pos bag of wind.

He's long gone on record as refusing to answer questions about pre-season football, saying it is largely meaningless, but suddenly when given a chance to kick the Redskins he's a changed man. Screw Wilbon....

Only have 4 cabinet positions left (Defense, Commerce, Attorney General, and Homeland Security). Anyone else care to help out?

The cheerleaders were a definite bright spot from last night's debacle.

This season is all about wait and see.

But, ofcourse we are on a blog, so reality will not be present here for at least a few weeks from now......

so my roommate's family has giants season tickets (been in the family since they were playing at the polo grounds, good seats on the 35 about 10-15 rows behind the giants bench I'm told).

So he's taking me to the game. I'm guessing this isn't going to be so much fun for me. Anyone have any recommendations for how to enjoy the game if the redskins are getting blown out?

Umm,

The likely notion we'll end up 5-11 this year and his involvement in the continuous decline of a once proud organiztion.

I would love to know the collective age of the devoted Redskin Insider bloggers who constantly praise Colt Brennan as the next Joe Montana. You guys are nuts! Colt may have heart, but he's a 3rd string QB who's no where near ready to be a 2nd stringer. Complete madness! Any observer who has football intelect would agree.
