Octavien Replaces Gatewood

The Redskins have signed linebacker Steve Octavien to the practice squad, filling the spot vacated by Curtis Gatewood, who was signed to the Kansas City Chiefs' active roster. Octavien will wear No. 56.

According to the Redskins, Octavien went to training camp with Kansas City this season after the Chiefs signed him as an undrafted free agent out of Nebraska. Octavien played in 22 games, with 10 starts, for the Cornhuskers from 2005-07 after transferring from William Rainey Harper College.

Who replaces who?

The FIRST time I saw this blog entry I thought it was misplaced from some WaPo politics blog talking about an Obama appointment.

Posted by: daggar | November 19, 2008 11:16 AM | Report abuse

Redskins should've signed Curtis Gatewood to the active roster.

This front office is pitiful. Gatewood is a beast and will prove it with his chance in Kansas City.

Vinny = failure

Shawn Springs' has the muscular endurance of string cheese.

Posted by: p1funk | November 19, 2008 11:05 AM | Report abuse

Ironically, reports say now that his calf tastes not like mozzarella which is what string cheese is but rather a over aged cheddar.

Posted by: alex35332 | November 19, 2008 11:08 AM | Report abuse

So now we've resorted to cannabilism? I'm not sure I want to know what Shawn Springs calf tastes like. Cindy, is this also a job duty for the WAPO reporters? Find the exact flavor of Shawn Springs calf?

This makes no sense.

1) Washington a pass rushing LB gets hurt
2) We have a roster spot open and a LB to replace
3) Great! We have a pass rushing LB on the practice squad (Gatewood was a DE in college)
4) wait..wait...instead of putting Gatewood on OUR active roster, we'll let the Chiefs sign him to THEIR active roster
5) Then we'll sign the guy they CUT (a LB who only started in 10 college games) to our practice squad

This is a real head-scratcher.......

Actually, our writers make each player submit to a rigorous, thorough physical every Wednesday morning.

Posted by: Cindy Boren | November 19, 2008 10:58 AM

In medico-journalo parlance, the Stick Poke Challenge.

Gatewood came along when Sinclair got hurt. Pass rushing OLB v. pass rushing DE. Not a massive difference (unless you consider Jason Taylor's height, which is massive, and about how he does both, so its not really a difference as much as a non-sameness).

Possible answers:

a. Some of the players like to rub his head before the game for good luck.
17. He bakes a mean cupcake.
&. Only he can get all those stubborn grass stains out of the uniforms after the game.
2. He's the first reserve racketball player - and always loses.
B. He's the only guy on the roster who can speak fluent Zornish.
%. He's first in at Redskins Park every day and brings the bagels and coffee.
t. Because we can.
0. Justin Case.
111. He gives really good foot rubs.

WaPo / Washington Times Relevant Question related to Yahoo Sports/Fantasy Football:

I am in an FFL through Yahoo Sports. When I check the little player updates for Chris Cooley (who I have as TE), the updates cited always come from RYan O'Hallaran and the Washington Times. They never come from JLa or WaPo.

Never gonna happen dealer. The Owner doesn't trade the geese that lay the golden eggs (in this case, sell shirts and put bums on seats).

I'm surprised you picked up Octavien. To me he got far too much credit for the defeat of Marc Antony at Actium when in fact it was mostly attributable to a combination of poor thinking by Cleopatra in taking her fleet to sea and demoralising Antony's men, and Agrippa's superior generalship. Which of course ultimately led to the deaths of both Marc Antony and Jennifer Lopez and his crowning as emperor after the First Settlement.

Anyway, what do you guys think?

Yes but one cannot dispute that it was Octavien skill with domestic policies and a balanced military policy that made his long rule over Rome one of the most successful. Julius may have become the emperor but Octavien made it the empire. Hope our Octavien can do it from our practice squad.

Posted by: alex35332 | November 19, 2008 12:05 PM | Report abuse

My take on picking up Octavien -

All of those Roman generals were hardcore. They didn't rule the Mediterranean with an iron-fist for nothing. I'd replace Curtis Gatewood with any old-school ROman general on my roster anyday.

I say KC got the short end of this transaction.

Can't wait to see Octavien go Russell-Crowe-berserk on Matt Hasselbeck this Sunday. I can already see him standing over Hasselbeck's corpse screaming "Are you not entertained?!?!?!" to the stunned crowd at Quest.

I shouldn't even address this, but I will...

For financial reasons alone Portis and Cooley aren't going anywhere. JC has a 90 QB rating and has shown the ability to run this offense well. Don't see why you'd make a move, especially when there's no one better available.

The only changes I see being made would be exchanging the old, slow o-lineman for smaller more athletic lineman (like Denver employs). But the skill position players should be fine.

it doesn't really matter. this guy can't get us 5 sacks much less 10 sacks. and if he could, he would soon find himself unable to play while getting paid his millions b/c the skins don't believe in investing/drafting in a young defensive linemen / linebacker.
it doesn't really matter if you have the best set of defensive backs in the league. the best in the leagues like the giants and our most recent SUPER BOWL winners, have proven over and over again that you can win with great a defensive line and mediocre defensive backs.

For the cheap seats:

The Redskins defense, whatever its faults, is NOT THE PROBLEM.

An offense that is lousy at getting touchdowns is the problem.

I don't even know why we see articles concerning the pass rush. I realize it isn't sexy to leave the passer unabused..but the bottom line is: how many points do the other teams score on us? The answer is not much at all.

How many points do we score? Not many many at all.
