Odds and Ends

If the Skins were going to cut Brunell protocol would dictate him getting tipped off today (a courtesy any 15 year vet would get) and was around Redskins Park for a long time today and , according to people close to the situation, he was not informed of any release today. Looks like barring a trade offer making these guys flinch they'll go with 3 QBs.

Of course, the Skins could also have decided to not even tell Mark their intentions, in a ruse to make teams think they are going to keep him and try to create some value for him, but it's doubtful that would work, and there is a very limited market for Brunell either way.

As for trades, the Seattle thing was just an exploratory phone call blown entirely out of proportion. There are 3-4 teams looking for depth QBs - including Jacksonville - and that could be worth keeping an eye on. But the problems is there are other guys out there like Leftwich, at least a few teams like Cleveland still have to cut a QB, some teams like younger projects land a lot of teams would rather wait for the final cuts Saturday and would not feel pressed to try to make a deal for Brunell before then.

A deal could do at any point before the Oct. 16 trade deadline, so injuries etc. could actually create a better market for him down the road, 'cause right now the Skins simply would likely not get enough for him to appease what Gibbs thinks he's worth. Holcomb went for a 6th and no one in the league I spoke to thought the Skins would be able to get anything more than that for Mark, and maybe only a conditional sixth at that.

So if you asked me to put odds on it I'd say he's here, but it also only takes one phone call to change everything.

As for receivers, Keenan McCardell is back out there and the Skins liked him previously and now he no longer has the option of playing for his hometown team in Houston. So, assuming he still wants to play and there are no other names out there that Washington's loves come Sat., they could call him.
(LB Dhani Jones, who also worked out for the Skins in the off season, was also cut today, but with the Godfrey signing I don't see them having much interest here ... unless Khary Campbell's hamstring problems because serious. Khary was pretty adamant after the game that it was a minor thing).

As for the roster my gut feeling is Vernon Fox doesn't make it and Ade Jimoh might be pushed to the brink ... but I think he's here, too. Don't see too many established guys being in trouble. Jason Fabini could be redundant now, but that wouldn't be a surprise considering how camp went. They love Ryan Boschetti as well but this could be the end for him here.

Will be interesting to see if Chris Wilson and Alex Buzbee both make it and regardless of this 53 man roster announced tomorrow, I still anticipate at least 1-2 additions after Saturday on the offensive side of the ball.

I think they find a way to keep Doughty - even if they still end up carrying just 4 safeties - and given the kids they like at CB, that could be the case. The injuries to Eubanks and Torrence could factor into that decision as well.
