Camp storylines: No. 6 Right side of offensive line

With Redskins training camp opening Thursday afternoon, this week on Redskins Insider, we'll count down the most pressing issues the team faces as players prepare to report.

How much of an upgrade -- if any -- is provided by the new faces on the offensive line?

It was no secret the past couple of seasons that the offensive line needed some new blood, and Mike Shanahan made it a priority this offseason. While the coaching staff went through its organized training activities (OTAs) and minicamp practices with Mike Williams at right guard and Artis Hicks at right tackle, they'll open training camp with a re-shuffled depth chart.

Williams is out for the season and Hicks likely will take his spot at right guard, and following the team's final minicamp last month, the Redskns picked up Jammal Brown to play right tackle in a trade with New Orleans.

Prediction: The Redskins will open the season with their strongest offensive line in several seasons. Brown is a two-time Pro Bowler, and if first-round draft pick Trent Williams is slow to adjust on the left side, Brown provides some insurance and can easily slide over to the position he prefers.

Hicks has been praised for his versatility, but he hasn't been a regular starter in the NFL since 2006.

The big question is depth. Coaches weren't overly impressed with what they saw on tape of some of the linemen they inherited, which is why they sought out fresh faces. And while the starting rotation looks significantly better than the one that finished last season, the players behind them do not.

To our dear RI writers,

Please make sure the next post isn't about Leigh Torrance, Patrick Ramsey, Marcus Mason, Marko Mitchell, or Antonio Pierce. We only care about CURRENT Redskins and would prefer not to rehash the awful arguments of the last 3-5 years.

Pretty sure I can say that on behalf of blog community here.

It was a drastic improvement during the offseason but there is still plenty that need to improve on this line. Just shows how terrrible they were before. Would love if the draft picks can pan out in the long term. Think we need one more solid tackle and a guard backup. Really hope Cook can push Rabach this year, new blood all around is a good thing imo, only Dockery is completely secure.

We need more linemen but will most likely have to make due with what we have. Hopefully the new regime can find some serviceble guys with last years left overs and the later round draft picks. I'm thinking the new attitude around the park and the amount of work guys are putting in will help them find a diamond in the rough.

Did anyone hear The Caveman Mike Sellers reflect on the last two years with Zorn? I knew the players didn't respect him but geeze I don't even know if they knew he was their coach. I don't think Shanny does 4 and 12 but 8 and 8 is a real possibility and who knows we might get lucky and No. 5 stays healthy putting together a good run at trying to make the playoffs. Plus I truly believe that even bad linemen would play harder for a guy like Mcnabb rather than Campbell. He just isn't close to the same level as McNabbs presence.

Until training camp starts or T. Williams signs a contract, it's ALL rehashed crap. But we're addicts, so lets smoke that hash...

It looks like our starting O-line should be improved from last year. That more than anything gives me more confidence than I had prior to the last two seasons. We still have depth issues, with all of the backups being unproven question marks or proven to be mediocre at best. we once again need to hope for the starters to remain healthy. Still it is a good start at a rebuild, and I don't think we could have asked for much more in one year. Lets just hope it continues to be a priority for Allen/Shanahan.

As bad as the OL, the QB play, the play calling, and the coaching; the Skins could've/should've won 4 more games. While the schedule looks tougher, the Skins should be a deeper team and a better coached team. Put me down for the Skins giving us a solid 8-8 season with the Skins playing their best ball at year end.

Posted by: TWISI | July 27, 2010 11:49 AM | Report abuse

Back to the TE discussion. I think it's possible that one of these two guys will be our #1 guy in terms of catches, and both will be in the top three. The Shanahans will find ways to get the most out of their combined talents. I believe we will see them on the field together a significant part of the time, and we will see them both lined up anywhere and everywhere. It will be hard for defenses to match up with them consistantly without tipping their hand as to what the defensive scheme is. Their presence on the field together will also force defenses to use their safeties more in coverage of the TE's. This will create more opportunities for the WR's downfield. I expect Moss to reap the benefits of this situation as he will no longer be facing constant double teams. I also think that having both Cooley and Davis on the fiels together will help our red-zone offense by giving McNabb more big targets to throw to. Davis has said that he has been working hard to improve his blocking skills and recognizes how important that aspect of the game is.

An Improved O-line plus the possibilities created by our TE tandem are the biggest reason for my optomism entering this season.

2-14 is a real possibility. They are the oldest team in the NFL and has been QB. Head coach can't win w/o one of the best QBs ever. Defensive coordinator decided not to play the defensive scheme that works best best w/ his talent but go with a 3-4.Oldest team would only work if they were close to the SB. They aren't and never will be. Cooley and CP create issues in the locker room.

The GM is a salary gap guy and was hirred for his name.

Danny just repeats his mistakes again and again. The Redskins are the reality version of Groundhog Day.

The future is now doesn't work with todya's Redskins. Mikie is no George Allen,
Donovan is no Billy Kilmer, CP couldn't sniff Larry Brown's jock and today's Redskin receivers wouldn't even make the taxi squad back in 72 including Cooley and Davis. Fat Albert is non Dancing Bear. And sorry no cornerback or safety has the talent or the ability to deliver a hit liek Pat Fisher.

So the future is yesterday with Redskins. Coach Mikie will be gone in two years.

And Danny Boy will repeat.

Drastic improvement? You're all voting drastic improvement?

We've got a rookie LT. That's a step back, no question, for this season. We've got an oft-injured RT. That's a question mark. We've got a journeyman at RG who hasn't played in years. And we've got holdovers at LG and C.

And no one behind them.

Hard to argue that's a 'drastic improvement'. Williams will be great in the future, but it's going to be tough early.

There are a lot of 'ifs'. If Williams can learn quickly. If Brown can stay healthy. If Hicks can play. If none of the backups have to play. If if if.

This OL is a question mark. You can bet every team will attack them early.

Do you realize that one point three of the Skins starting Olmen were Levi Jones (out of football due to injury until week 6), BMW (out of football for two years and out of shape for all that time), and Stephon Heyer (who would be the 9th Olman on most teams). Let's not even talk about who the backups were. The Skins Oline in 2010 is a much better unit compared to that.

What's the official over/under and spread for the exact time that AH92's agents will notify the Redskins that their client won't be able to make it to training camp this week?

Readers will recall that AH92 was on allegedly fully committed and track to make it to the mandatory spring mini-camp, that is, up until around 8:30 p.m. the night before, when his agents released a statement explaining that Albert would not attend because of differences of opinion concerning his role in the Redskins defensive scheme.

Just wondering, especially since nothing much has changed since then...

The oline has for a long time been a big question mark that teams tried to exploit early on. They still drastically improved over previous years during this offseason. they brought in two book ends and a more qualified backup then our previous starters. They also got late picks in hopes of development. When was the last time we drafted 3 lineman in a draft and picked up one of the best FA olineman. Still work to be done but they are doing so much more for the line then they have in the past. Besides Dmac the oline has gotten the most attention this offseason.

Got to be better than last year. Depth is an issue, so the improvement will be slight.

In relative terms I can see why you might say drastic, because last year was a disaster. Even an average OL would mean a big improvement.

whenever someone asks if the OL is better than last year, its gotta have a date on it. The OL that began 2009 was decent. On opening day, only Heyer was a weak link. But by the time Thomas and Samuels were gone a few games in, the OL was a disaster.

So its a good upgrade over the OL we had 1 year ago today. its a huge upgrade over the OL we had for the 2nd half of 2009.

The line even at the beginning of last year wasnt all that much. Samuals and Thomas both had major injury concerns that effected them. We didnt have a 100 yard rusher till week 6 and we played some weak @ss teams. We wont have to wait until week 6 this year to get 100 yards out of somebody.

"What's the official over/under and spread for the exact time that AH92's agents will notify the Redskins that their client won't be able to make it to training camp this week?"

I hope he arrives.

I'm gonna get paid.

I cashed out my 401k to buy enough burgandy n gold t-shirts with "LEAVE ALBERT BE!!" and "21 mil" stitched across the chest and back.

Thing is, because of the stock market crash, there was only enough money left to buy the one shirt I'm wearing now.

And it's too small.

"Can Dennis the Menace go a week without ringing Mr Wilson's door bell?"

I hated Dennis the Menace growing up because he got away with stuff the old people in the neighborhood where I lived usually set me on fire for doing.

And it's too small.

A problem most men have!

The beginning of any season has If's. I will agree that the o-line is better on paper than it was at the beginning of last year. Patience is in order, as we all know that the players will need time to mesh. Still don't feel good about C and RG though.

The line is much better than last year with 3 new faces.

I still think Casey Rabauch is a weak link. This will be chad rhinehart's and Heyer's last year. i wouldn't be surprised if rhinehart is cut in preseason.

Let's hope the LT kid from WVU can play too.

Folks worried about T Williams have to remember he'll face the likes of A Carter, B Orakpo, and A Haynesworth (if he shows) in practice every day for the next coupla weeks.

Ol' Silverback will be more than ready when the season starts.

Camp Storyline #4: Will T.O.'s signing be a distraction?

Posted by: coparker5 | July 27, 2010 1:49 PM | Report abuse

"Drastic improvement? You're all voting drastic improvement?"

Had there been a choice in between "drastic improvement" and "slight improvement," i.e., for "substantial improvement," I would have chosen that one. But there wasn't.

"We've got a rookie LT. That's a step back, no question, for this season."

From the dregs that played there last year after Samuels went down? I don't think so. Some rookie LTs can come in and play well from the start; some struggle. We'll see which category TWill falls into. But even if he struggles, he doesn't figure to do any worse than Levi Jones and the other speed bumps who played the position last year.

"We've got an oft-injured RT. That's a question mark."

Oft injured? He played in 13 games his first season and in 15 games the next three. Other than the injury that caused him to miss all of 2009, I'm not aware of a serious injury he's had as a pro. I know that making the Pro Bowl doesn't necessarily mean that you're a great player (see Frerotte, Gus). But you can't reasonably contend that a two-time Pro Bowler like Brown won't be a drastic improvement over Stephon freaking Heyer.

"We've got a journeyman at RG who hasn't played in years."

True, although it's more accurate to say that he hasn't started in years (since 2006). He has played as a reserve for the Vikings in each season since then. And the fact that he has played fairly frequently during that period on one of the best O-lines in the league suggests that he will be an improvement over the non-entities that played RG for us last season after Thomas went down.

"And we've got holdovers at LG and C."

Again, true, but most observers didn't think that they were the real problem last season. A 60% turnover in starters is still considerable.

"And no one behind them."

Well, we don't fully know what we have behind them. We don't know about Lichtensteiger or about draftees Capers and Cook. Although depth is a concern, if we stay reasonably healthy, the o-line will be substantially improved over last season.

Does anyone know the status of Shawn Andrews?

He has had his share of issues but if he is back on the road to recovery we could do worse in signing a guy to be a backup OG in 2010 who may be able to start for us in 2011.

I think the O-Line is going to be A-OK.

Most dominant in the NFC East.

The Cowboys line is going to crumble soon.

I'm laughing like Dr. Evil right now.

I was thinking the same thing. For his first NFL start to be against Demarcus Ware is a little scary, but he's gotta face hime sometime. Let's just hope he ready 9/12 regarless what side he plays on.

I hope those few weeks prepare him for the few MONTHS of the season....

I am happy we got a gm n coach who are willing to let rookies develop...

I think austin is our starter at kr/Pr , speed is king there

To your poll question, drastic improvement to the starting five, but still no proven depth which will mean not enough improvment over the course of an entire season. BMW will really be missed at some point this season.

Posted by: hapster | July 27, 2010 5:16 PM | Report abuse

I said drastic improvement - however I base that not on the strength of the current lineup but on utter futility of the line last season - what the Skins ended up with was possibly the worst O line ever put on a football field
