Edwin Williams slims down to compete for Redskins o-line spot

Since last month's draft, much of the attention has focused on left tackle Trent Williams and the first-string offense line. But as Redskins fans learned last season, the depth chart is just as important. Edwin Williams doesn't need any reminders. With the Redskins drafting three offensive linemen, the DeMatha and University of Maryland product knows there's little room for error this offseason.

He says he's well aware that Mike Shanahan's zone-blocking scheme has traditionally favored lighter, quicker linemen.

"You think about things like that," he said. "You want to be one of his guys, no doubt about it. In this profession, somebody else is out there trying to work just as hard as you are. You've got to put yourself in the best position to try to succeed, try to do well."

Williams has been working hard in the offseason conditioning program and says he is about 20 pounds lighter than he was just a few weeks ago. Williams doesn't step on a scale often, but he says he weighs about 315 pounds.

"To be honest, I haven't seen under 300 in five or six years," he said. "That would be awesome. That may be too light, though."

Williams appeared in three games last season and started two at right guard -- he was one of five linemen who started at right guard. The undrafted Williams will have his hands full trying to make the roster this season, as Redskins' coaches are determined to remake the offensive line. He's been trying to prove to coaches that he's dedicated to helping Washington improve.

"I did come into this offseason workouts kind of out of shape. The strength and conditioning staff has really helped me," he said. "It's just really refreshing to have guys like that in your corner. I know I shouldn't have been at that weight before. I'm feeling a lot better, eating the right things, things I've never done in my whole life. I come from a traditional black family. We eat fried foods and things like that."

Williams looks noticably slimmer than last season. He'll be competing for one of the team's inside linemen spots. Derrick Dockery and Mike Williams appear to be the preferred guards. But there's also Will Montgomery, Chad Rinehart and a host of others battling with for a spot on the roster.

Edwin Williams knows the team is looking for speedy, athletic linemen and he's been focusing this offseason on tailoring his body to suit the Redskins' needs. He's had a lot of help along the way. Williams is one of several players to rave about the team's offseason conditioning program.

"We have structure," he said. "You can always go to your calendar and know exactly what you have to do. Day lifting, day off. You didn't have that last year. Coach Shanahan is very strict. He tells you exactly what he wants and how he wants it. And the only thing you need to do is go out there and do it."

Good luck, Edwin.

"We eat fried foods and things like that."

Makes me wonder: how much more effective could some of these athletes be if they were nutritionally educated and inclined to follow proper diets?

I remember reading just before his final season, ST21 had taken up a special diet that relied heavily on fish, lean meats, and fresh ingredients. He lost around 20 lbs, and looked (and played) like the most physically fit athlete on the field.

With all the money and resources these guys have, seems like it's a pretty simple way of improving performance on the field.

brown, I know there is a fresh AH rumor circulating out there, but you have to be the first one in about 45 days to seriously want a post dedicated to Haynesworth.

If the Jags are offering a CB like Mathis and draft picks (hopefully a 1st and a 3rd) then I say they do it. Fast.

Is this a racially insensitive remark? Does he really think that only black families know how to pamper their children? I'd like to think that I take my kids to Popeye's just as often as him mama put fried chicken on his plate. And when they want to order cole slaw, I insist on french fries. Supersize it!

Diet issues are serious for black folks.

The reason why 'Precious' stands out for us is we all have know or have a morbidly obese sister, mom, aunt, cousin, and baby mommas.

For us, 'thick' describes a curvy, big azzed voluptuous woman who other groups see as a fat chick.

Back when I coached, I gave my athletes suggested meal tips and brought fresh fruit and veggies to practices the days before track meets and cross country competitions.

And with all this being said, do you know what mrsmoe is cooking tonite for dinner?:

Fried chicken

what does this say about last year's coaching staff?
They were lazy so the team was lazy. No hitting drills, tackling drills, discipline in any way shape or form. We should win 2 extra games just from the fact that the team is in better shape.
So phouking sad that a professional sports team could be run so poorly. And these so called pro athletes??? they get paid a pretty penny and they can't even stay in phouking shape? phouk you, bunch of lazy athletes. we fans give you everything, including our very hard earned money and thats how you respect us? i don't want to se a single familiar face on this team. it'll just remind me how lazy that person was the last few years. Keep Horton, Orakpo, D-Mac, and Williams. Get rid of the rest. They're all lazy bastards that didn't take their job's seriously but they will now since there's a new coach. If this is true, it makes a ton 'o sense.

Mathis is a balla.

To run any kind of hybird defense, you need a lockdown corner type you can trust to take away some team's best receiver.

The jags could use a run stuffer, and since we've added more NT types, Prince Al becomes kinda expendable.

We'll see what happens.

If this is true, you done good, moodly.

Mathis is legit but this is still not enough compensation for AH. More draft picks or impact players need to be involved to make it worthwhile.

Every time there is a coaching change everyone comes out and says how much more the new staff expects from them. This coaching staff is better etc, etc. Granted the last staff was horrible but everything said during the off season camps about the coaching staff should be taken with a grain of salt.

I like Edwin as a center. He's tough and physical, something we haven't always had around here. Coming out of college I thought he was maybe better than Heyer and Andrew Crummey, and was surprised he wasn't a late-round draftee. Probably had something to do with the decline in Maryland's record.

You mean waiting for Reid to cut-n-paste someone else's information.

Or waiting for Reid to get in touch with Jason LaCanfora who will feed him some wild variation of the rumor like "the Jags are trying to get Brian Orakpo included in the package", as a way to compensate for the fact that he's a day late and dollar short in all of his reporting.

Either way, a trade for Mathis and a 2nd rounder would SUCK. There's no value for the Skins.

Mathis is going to be 30 years old in August and has been injured the last 2 years. His best season was in 2006, and he'd basically be competing for the #2 or #3 cornerback position on this team for a year or 2.

The threshold for a reasonable trade is what the Dolphins gave for Marshall - two 2nd rounders.

Rasheen mathis does not have the value of a 2nd round pick.

You know it's offseason when I can bring this website back into play (Big Ups to Sweeny)

http://stuffwhitepeoplelike.com/2010/03/14/132-picking-their-own-fruit/

It is well established that white people like the past. Vintage clothing, history degrees, and nostalgia are just three examples of how white people show their love for by-gone eras. So when white people think about growing their own food they are reminded of pastoral images of farming, working the land, and growing whole natural foods for their family. This most positive viewpoint comes from the fact that white people have mostly enjoyed supervisory roles in agricultural production over the years.

But as more and more white people moved into cities, they lost their connection to working the land. In recent years, the most advanced white people have quit their jobs, moved to the country and opened artisanal dairies and small scale radicchio farms.

However, not all white people have the ability, or the trust funds, to quit their job and follow their food-based passions. Some white people have to get their fix by picking their own fruit.

Many of you might be familiar with the process of harvesting a crop, some of its more intense variations are often referred to as “migrant labor” and “slavery.” Under these conditions, laborers are expected to work extremely hard in order to live up to large expectations about their fruit picking output.

When white people harvests a crop it’s known as “berry picking” or “pick your own fruit.” Under these conditions, white people are expected to work leisurely with no real expectations and then they pay for the privilege to do so. In other words, berry picking is the agricultural equivalent to a private liberal arts college. It’s no surprise white people like it, because much like a liberal arts degree it feels like you’ve done real work when you really haven’t.

Huh? I wasn't at any practices last year so I can't judge the staff on how hard they worked. The players are professional athletes; they should be able to motivate themselves to lift, regardless.
Shanahan and Allen are clowns. Shanahan is another nepotist, using the Skins to get his son a job; this should have been the first warning sign. Allen is still getting by on his father's name. The "football people botched the draft. Maybe Trent Williams will work out; he seems a little light for a tackle. How many tight ends will They draft before they realize that they already have one of the best in the game?

Funny thing is that the "fake-me-out" posts have more legitimacy in my eyes than the stuff that Reid recycles about AH non-updates.

At least the "fake-me-out" posts are honest about being fake-me-out.

Reid and Co. actually try to pawn off their non-updates as legitimate and interesting news updates.

Kind of like NBA and WWE. IMO, WWE is more legitimate because at least they are fairly honest and upfront about it being fixed entertainment, whereas the NBA continues to honestly sell this delusion that its product and refereeing are legitimate and should be taken seriously.

footballoutsiders.com:

"Washington Redskins
Biggest Post-Draft Need: Wide Receiver

"Washington has had a very successful offseason, trading for a quality veteran quarterback in Donovan McNabb and acquiring a sorely needed left tackle in Oklahoma's Trent Williams to provide backside protection. They've thrown together a collection of washed-up, big-name running backs in the hopes that someone will squeeze out a last productive season. What they did not do is address the need at wide receiver. There were many reasons why Washington ranked 28th in passing DVOA last year, but at least one of them was the failure of the 2008 draft class of Devin Thomas and Malcolm Kelly to develop into frontline starters. Thomas was particularly disappointing, catching only 53 percent of the passes that went his way. Thomas and Kelly do have the size that Mike Shanahan prizes, and perhaps they will play better for him than they did for Jim Zorn. Then again, the recent signing of Joey Galloway suggests that the team doesn't like what it has and simply didn't have enough draft choices to do something about it."

"Important Undrafted Free Agents

"Keiland Williams was a five-star recruit for LSU who had a disappointing career, and while early Football Outsiders research suggested it was a good idea to target SEC tailbacks in the back end of the draft, the recent glut of underachievers pumped out of Baton Rouge (Joseph Addai, LaBrandon Toefield) takes a bit of shine off the theory. Williams does have a lot of raw speed, but he will need to stop bouncing everything outside if he wants to be the next Shanahan wonder back. Competing with Williams for the role will be Troy's Maurice Greer and Tony Nelson of UMass."

Great. Another Edwin Williams story. Does this mean we are going to see his mug shot every day for the next three weeks? I feel like his face has been forever tatooed on my mind.

As far as Williams the person and not Williams the mug shot, you have to appreciate honesty like, "I did come into this offseason workouts kind of out of shape". That's probably not going to do much for his job security, but you at least have to give a nod to the honesty. It's the equivalent of the other Williams guy on the team saying, "You know, I was one fat mo-fo, I mean, I was Phat Bastard before he went on the diet..."

The traditional white/black stereotypes are on a slippery slope to being inextricably blurred.

As a white dude, born and raised in the suburbs of DC, I could still probably recite a dozen Wu-Tang songs off the top of my head though I haven't listend to an album in at least a decade; and so could scores of the wigger friends I had at one point.

I go to suburban malls and see black teens in and out of Abercrombie Fitch driving Jeep Cherokees with private prep school bumper stickers.

The multitude of interracial couples that I know grows and grows as time goes on.

These are the folks poised to be leaders in the next generation - privileged educated folks with opportunities who honestly don't give a you-know-what about racial stereotypes.

As time goes on the Al Shaprtons and Jesse Jacksons of the world are becoming less and less relevant. Ice Cube now has a sitcom appearing on TBS and Snoop Dogg has a reality TV show where he sends his kids to learn soccer from David Beckham.

In a world where the best golfer is black and the best rapper is white, and the President is about as white as a black dude could ever be, let's acknowledge this profound truth:

You don't have to be a certain race to be a fried-food eating fatso.

And cottage cheese -- white folks practically live on the stuff. Small curd of course, with a side of jello salad. Sometimes they put ketchup on the cottage cheese, like Richard Nixon. And salt in their beer. Plus they like boiled fish.

footballoutsiders.com:

Things I disagree with:

-I think it is unfair to evaluate any receiver who suffered through the Jim Zorn regime. The scheme was predictable, the QB was mediocre and the coaching was flat out pathetic. I mean, do any of these writers understand that the receivers were running just a limited number of routes that teams were predicting before every snap? They were getting no help with adjustments or scheme: just plain vanillia from week to week. I think DT will shine this season and we will see MK push for the number two role. Although I did not agree with the MM cut, I understand Shanahan wanting some "fallback experience" in case things go bad.

True that they had an unfair situation surrounding them, particularly because of Jim Zorn...

...but that doesn't explain why, despite having a #2 corner assigned to them and seeing significantly less double teams, neither guy even sniffed Santana Moss' production last season (and it's not like Moss lit it up either). Catching only 53% of the balls thrown your way is a bad statistic, especially when you consider the factors above.

Moss produced, Davis produced, Cooley produced (when he was playing); Thomas and Kelly did not (aside from 1 game for each guy). Hopefully that changes this year. Hopefully this is the year that it "clicks."

the evidence is growing against fat being the cause of being obese and developing diabetes. Carbohydrates like white bread, biscuits, bagels, waffles pancakes and eating so much sugar is the more likely culprit. Cut out sugar and eat less refined, processed carbs and you'll be much better off. Fried chicken is fine as is real butter on your whole grain bread.

Haley: "That’s how girls end up dead."

Luke: "Don’t talk black to me."

Manny: "It’s inappropriate because she’s your teacher."

Luke: How do you even talk black? Like end words with "-izzle"?

Alex: It’s "talk back," you idiot.

You must be new up here if you think that nobody criticizes Gibbs/Brunell or Casserly. And you must have a short memory if you think all of Vinny’s choices became starters or contributors. Where’s that punter that he USED A DRAFT PICK ON? Where’s Jim Zorn, that he hired? Sure he made some nice choices like Orakpo, but if you think the last 10 seasons can be blamed on Casserrly you’re nucking futs. The dude (Cerrato) was a yes man to snyder at best, and if he did actually have any control, show the winning seasons he had to back it up. And remember for Gibbs 2, Cerrato was pretty much out of the pic.

The comments about the structure of the offseason program is EXACTLY the reason why Haynesworth's working out on his own is just a way of showing his displeasure with the direction of the team.

He may have had an issue last year with Zorn's offseason program which was deficient, but this one is not and not tell Shanahan to go pound sand is not the response of a guy you know is going to be around when this team is once again ready to be a contender.

For all this talent (when he feels like playing), Haynesworth is not a winner in terms of attitude and inclination. He is a loner that likes to look at himself as separate from the team.

That is why you had other clubs with dysfunctional front offices like Tampa and JAX interested in Haynesworth as a free agent.

You didn't see New England, Philly, Indy, San Diego or any of these traditional winning clubs going after him.

For the 'miracle whip at breakfast' fan -

Fry some real bacon, thick cut is better. Get left over ham from the night before (real off the bone ham and def not ham steaks) and get it hot in the skillet as well.

Toast up some bread, slather on the miracle whip, the put the bacon and ham on the bread and enjoy!!

Your heart may stop whilst eating, but one good glug of milk should get the ticker working again@

As a white dude, born and raised in the suburbs of DC, I could still probably recite a dozen Wu-Tang songs off the top of my head though I haven't listend to an album in at least a decade; and so could scores of the wigger friends I had at one point.

That's pretty funny.

Of course I'm not actually trying to keep it alive - just reflecting nostalgically.

Though I found a Killah Priest CD recently and listened through a couple of my fave tracks.

I remember around 1992-1993 when Wu-Tang came to College park and performed at the "Vous" for something like a $5 cover charge.

Needless to say it was right before 36 Chambers came out and they weren't all that big yet.

Also saw Eminem perform at a hole-in-the-wall club in D.C. $10 cover, right before the Slim Shady album came out. But get this - Eminem wasn't even headlining, he was the opening act for KRS and Buckshot Shorty (whom I was actually coming to see). When I walked in, they were handing out free VHS videos of "My Name Is".

After the show, Eminem stuck around and freestyled on the stage for a while and mingled with the crowd...

Fried chicken knows no race.

FYI When I was starting out in DC I wrote for a magazine called "Professional Pilot" Did a piece on the pilots at KFC, which had just recently been sold by the Colonel who was still a symbol and a spokesman.

They made him available for me to talk to. The PR person said "He's very outspoken and not happy with some things the new company has done, so please don't ask him about the gravy."

Yeah, right. First question:

"What do you think of the new gravy?"

"Aint fit for a dog."

He was 65 when he started KFC. Betcha he wouldn't approve of the Infarction-burger, with two pieces of chicken acting as bread.

Man, you guys take your food way too seriously. You'll appreciate this. I have been in Romania this week on business. My colleagues and I were at a restaurant one night and my friend asks for "number four, but could you hold the mushrooms"? The waitress looks at him for about thirty seconds and then says - as deadpanned as you can get - "no". So, item number two is the same cut of meat without mushrooms and he asks if he can have that - just the way it is on the menu - and the waitress says - without hesitation - "sure". We're all laughing. About twenty minutes later the waitress brings me my plate and it has fries on it, but no ketchup. I ask if I can have some ketchup. Same look. Thirty seconds go by. "No". Then I ask if I can have some tomato sauce for my french fries. She says she will see what she can do. She brings out something that looks like ketchup but tastes like sweet-n-sour sauce. It's way beyond gross on fries. Finally, I ask for Mayo and she brings that right out with a big smile on her face. Man, I thought the whole world knew about ketchup... and here it gets upstaged by Mayo...

From: 4thFloor

"WTF is 'miracle-whip'??"

According to the slang code, a 'whip' is a fine driving machine.

It goes without saying what a 'miracle' is.

So obviously, a 'miracle whip' is a car that cannot only change water into wine, it can turn itself back into water should you get pulled over in a d.u.i stop.

EXAMPLE:

"Bro', I got pulled over by a state troopa in my miracle whip, and doncha know it changed my blunt into pack of KOOLS Menthols in a hard box."

Why would black folk have to admit to liking funk, jazz based rock music?

Think about it.

My kids sing "Deacon Blues," "Dirty Work," "Kid Charlemange," "FM," "Ricky Don't Lose that Number," and "Time Out of Mind" like the songs were family anthems.

"Aja" and "Gaucho" have been favs since I was knee-high to a pup.

And he's a grown dog now.

There is no such thing as black of white music in America.

There's just good azzed music versus country.

In Northern/Eastern Europe that tends to be the case. I've been around Italy/Spain/France and can't ever recall even seeing a jar of mayo.

Also vinegar in North/East Europe...and when you are putting vinegar on food to make it taste better, then you know your food sucks.

hummus?: a condiment of Middle Eastern derivation.

It consists of ground chick peas and various spices.

It is not to be confused with the noun 'humma'-- slang for a specific sex act.

EXAMPLE:

"Bro', my girlfriend gave me a humma last night that had my toes curled all up."

I have the missing pieces of our All Williams O-Line:

RT: T Williams
RG: Big Mike Williams
C - Venus Williams
LG: E Williams
LT: Serena Williams

Now that's pretty solid.

I'm very glad that he brought up the issue of a proper diet. As psps23 said, they're well-paid athletes and should act like they respect their bodies as the vehicle for their work.

Hopefully this will catch on. Doubt it.

===============================

How do you know if you're never taught? Does money suddenly make you a health expert? He certainly can't go outside the team for health advice lest he end up ingesting something that is a banned substance.

Just like he said, NOW they have structure. Last year they didn't. NOW they have a nutritionist that is telling him what to eat and when to eat it. A Strength Coach telling them HOW to workout and when to workout. They don't have to worry or wonder about what to do. Shanny and Co. has it all laid out for them.

A professionally run organization? WOW!

Maybe we can have good football, hockey, baseball teams in the same year. That would be awesome.... sorry Wiz you are doomed.
