Offensive line is a work in progress

As the team gets ready for St. Louis, there appears to be three question marks on the offensive line. Let's address them one at a time.

Left tackle Trent Williams suffered a knee sprain late in the game against the Houston Texans. His teammates offered little in terms of a status update Wednesday morning.

If Williams isn't able to go, it seems increasingly likely that Stephon Heyer - not Jammal Brown - would replace him at left tackle. Brown, who appeared in two Pro Bowls as a left tackle, said he hasn't taken any reps at that position since joining the Redskins.

"Trent's a good player, but Stephon is over there, too," Brown said.

At left guard, coaches have been alternating Derrick Dockery and Kory Lichtensteiger. Neither player has been told who will start at left guard Sunday at St. Louis, they said. Both said they were surprised Lichtensteiger has seen so much time.

"But what are you going to do about it? You going to cry about it?" Dockery asked. "Pout about it?"

"Kory deserves a shot. I thought he played a really good preseason, had a really good offseason," Dockery continued. "Coach said he wanted to give him a shot."

Said Lichtensteiger: "It was a pretty big surprise the first game against Dallas. I found out the Saturday before the Sunday game. 'Hey, by the way, you're going to be alternating series.' That was a little surprising to me. But yeah, it's a lot more [playing time]. I thought I was just going to be a backup. It's been pretty cool to get some time."

Dockery says he wants to win, and if that means sharing snaps with Lichtensteiger, he's willing to do it. "You just want to do what's best for the team," he said. "If that's what coach thinks is best for the team, you have to go with it."

Lichtensteiger said his play against Houston was a big upgrade from his season debut against the Cowboys. As for Dockery, he concedes there is room for improvement in his game right now.

"So far, it can be better," he said. "I like to call myself a perfectionist. I'm very hard on myself. There are some plays here and there you wish you could take back. But for the most part, I played hard. I'm just trying to continue to improve."

While Casey Rabach and Artis Hicks appear to have center and right guard nailed down, there are some questions about the right tackle spot. Coaches had been rotating Heyer in to replace Brown during the first two two games. But if Heyer moves to left tackle to replace Williams, Brown might have to play four full quarters for the first time since 2008. And he concedes that he's still adjusting to the right side of the line.

Asked if the position is starting to feel natural, Brown said, "Not really. But we're still working on it."

Perhaps the bigger obstacle for Brown is the team's blocking scheme. The Redskins are Brown's second NFL team and his duties are quite a bit different from what he had to do with the New Orleans Saints.

"It's a lot different. The zone scheme does different things," Brown said. "As offensive linemen, you have to know a lot more. Down there with Drew Brees, it was a lot different. A lot of stuff was on his shoulders. But here, we got to know a lot of things as an offensive line."

It's a work in progress. The offensive line could see some changes when the Redskins take the field this Sunday.

LOL, Rabach has the Center position on lock according to Rick Maese.

Yeah, he's got it on lock cause he's the best Center the team has right now, I mean the dude is getting punished by NT's and DT's. Should move Lich to Center and keep Dock at LG. Wasn't Lich a Center to begin with?

Sooooo happy Heyer will be starting.

Redskins Acquire Vincent Jackson from Chargers.
Facing a 4pm deadline the San Diego Chargers and the Washington Redskins were able to work out a trade, sending Vincent Jackson to the Redskins in exchange for a 2nd round pick in the 2011 draft, as well as a 3rd round pick in the 2012 draft. Jackson is rumored to be in the air on his way to DC right now. Stay tuned as more details come in.

I think its best to leave Jammal Brown at RT b/c he is still trying to fully recover from his injury. He is getting used to playing that right side agian. It would be a setback if you switch him again.

Look, I don't mind Heyer being in there this week. Who does he have to go against? Chris Long...I want Trent healthy for Cole and them in Philly. So rest him against a low profile D line this week, and have him ready for the Birds.

I don't get it. So if Kolb ends up getting traded/benched, and Vick starts for that team and Vick plays well and they win, how does that reflect poorly on Andy Reid? You could actually make the case that our Oline is worse, considering we are 32nd in the league in rushing.

But yes - having a real QB makes alot of difference. Folk around here grew so used to victimizing Jason Campbell, that they forgot that it's possible to have a QB that actually elevates the play/masks the weaknesses of the players around him.

kinda makes my point, you can get better players via trade than by draft.

But my comment about all the Skins 2nd rounders and that NONE were better players than VJax doesn't tell you if they cost effective. There are definite risks to getting VJax via trade, but losing the pick isn't the big risk. The $$ is.

O-line is equivalent or worse than last year?

Haha, you two are smoking crack. If by equivalent or worse you mean better almost entirely across the line, then you may be onto something. Our best lineman from last year is fighting to keep his job this year.

The o-line and McNabb are equally responsible for the improved play on offense. Shocker that when Heyer replaced Williams on the left side last week we gave up 2 sacks, had a 3 & out, and had a stalled drive outside the red zone on McNabb's only 2 drives. And the second stalled drive only progressed beyond a 3 & out because a personal foul on Houston gifted the Skins a first down.

Regardless, both of you are missing the true upgrade. It's the Shanahans. McNabb isn't the one designing plays that put Fred Davis and Chris Cooley in space with no defenders within 20 yards of them.

I think the criticism has more to with how much Kolb got talked up by the team and how they handed him 12 mil. after only a few quarters of work. And now they've decided Vick is the guy after 2 bad quarters from Kolb.

The only thing they are losing is money. 12 mil. for a backup and moving forward Vick will need a new deal.

Posted by: PortisPocketsStr8 | September 22, 2010 2:16 PM | Report abuse

for those who wonder if giving up a 2nd round pick is good value for VJax, I present the following:

Redskins 2nd round picks, going back to 1980 (not just the Vinny years):

DT11, MK12, Fred Davis, Rocky MacIntosh, Taylor Jacobs, LaDell Betts, Fred Smoot, Jon Jansen, Stephen Alexander, Greg Jones, Cory Raymer, Tre Johnson, Reggie Brooks, Shane Collins, Andre Colline, Chip Lohmiller, Brian Davis, Wally Kleine, Marcus Koch, Walter Murray, Tory Nixon, Bob Slater, Steve Hamilton, Richard Williams, Vernon Dean, Matt Mendenhall.

I don't see ANYBODY on this list that is better than Vincent Jackson.

Posted by: zcezcest1

This is about as hollow as it gets. C'mon man, you're putting up the guys who haven't lived up to second round draft selection against the almighty Vince Jackson?

What does that prove? Okay, so using this argument I could list a bunch of guys who were taken AFTER the 3rd round and who are BETTER than Jackson and use this to make my case for NOT giving up a 2nd rounder.

So what, what would that prove?

Posted by: RedDMV

Red, you know, if 30 years worth of picks isn't enough of trend for you, not sure what is.

Reality is that the draft is a crapshoot. Always has been, always will be.

If you can get a known player who is better than anyone you're likely to get with the 2nd round pick (and there's 30 years of evidence to back that up), then the issue becomes a matter of $$, contract length and various other risks. Real issues, to be sure.

But if this deal is about talent, it is a no brainer. Few second round picks turn into a Vincent Jackson level talent.

And few 27 (28 before the season's over) year-olds continue to play at their prime beyond a couple years. And he's missing 4 games. And he's a misstep away from a full suspension. And there's the possibility of a lockout.

If it were about talent, Albert Haynesworth would go for multiple 1st round picks, and Santonio Holmes would have gone for much more than Vincent Jackson.

Unfortunately, when assessing the value of a second round pick (or any draft pick), it's never just about talent.

Alright Z's, I get that about the draft being a crap shoot. But what about all the good to great players that were taken after the third round (since SD isn't accepting anything less)?

It isn't like Vincent Jackson is a "once in a generation talent". They don't have to go out and get him. The WRs maybe suspect, but even with that fact McNabb still managed to pass for over 400 yards Sunday.

I think the collection of receivers that's already in place (TEs and WRs) is better than what McNabb ever had in Philly -- save for that 1 year with Owens. If they spread the ball around, use everyone, I don't see why they wouldn't be a threat passing the ball.

It's the running game that worries me now anyway. Seems when they get one facet of the offense going, the other part falters.

Based on purely performance, I said the case could be made - and it could. Our running game is last in the league, and the Week 1 performance of the passing game was trifling. You could say that maybe the group has taken a step forward in pass-pro (and/or maybe McNabb knows what he's doing), but has taken a step back in run-block which makes it a wash.

What is better about our Oline is the potential. Last year the Oline maxed out its potential and it sucked donk eggs. This Oline has the potential to be really really good based on talent upgrades at the tackle positions and better veteran depth.

Yes. The coaches are an upgrade as well. But the QB needs to make the decision and pull the trigger. Shanny could have designed that same pass play to Davis with Campbell under center...do you think Jason Campbell makes/completes that throw? We saw numerous examples under Campbell/Zorn when the receivers were there, but JC just missed/didn't make the throws.

No worries, Beantwon gets a lot of people with that, I used to hate them but then I realized how funny they are when people fall form them (I was one once).

ANYWAY, Jason Campbell is so very done as a starting QB. Where are all the JC lovers now? Are you gonna say he's getting treated unfairly in Oakland too? Or, uh, bad O-line the reason behind his awful decision making?

Re: VJax (again)

It's not just about whether VJax is worth a 2nd round pick.

It's about whether VJax is worth a second-round pick AND $30-50million.

Besides, who says we have to use that 2nd rounder on a WR? My point is that McNabb does not need a VJax in order to be successful. He's shown us for a dozen years that he can successfully QB a passing game without a clear #1 b/c he's spreading the ball around when he's in rhythm.

We don't have to use that 2nd rounder on a WR.

We could use it on a position of greater need like - young stud RB, legit 3-4 OLB prospect, DB/safety

VJax will get a new contract that will pay him roughly 7mil/year....NO WAY he gets 10Mil/yr and getting suspended...plus they'll have an Albert Hayneworth Clause....

That's doable for top 10 WR

No, I won't talk about ya, but I will tell you how to get a beat reporter job:

Carry Jason Reid's Burberry man purse and stuff it with Ho-Ho's, pink Sno Balls, and Butterscotch Krimpets. But go easy on the Krimpets. Reid generally only likes pastries that have cream filling.

If the game gets blacked out this weekend in St. Louis, does that mean it won't be played here??

Some insight please

I totally agree with that. The Skins were #1 in payroll (shocker, ehh?) and will need to re-sign McNabb. They've got major commits to TW and DHall. LL30, Rocky, Jammal Brown are among guys who might be getting a pay hike soon. We'll see if Orakpo decides to pull a Revis to get his $$ upped.

If there was a salary cap, we'd have been way over the top of it.

If there is a cap again after this year, then VJax + McNabb will take up a bunch of that cap room.

That is the real issue. Is VJax worth one of those few big $$ contracts that this team has left to offer?

The talent is there and based on what big 33 year old WRs are doing, and VJax has another 5-7 strong years in front of him. I'd part with the 2nd rounder for the talent, its the $$ part of the deal that makes me squeamish.

No. It's only blacked-out in the locale where the game is being played.

VJax is about this -- do you get him, do you get Mankins (similar $$), do you think those same $$ will be better spent somewhere else on the team.

Right now, our WR group is pretty weak and Moss, our best guy is 31 -- smaller quick WRs tend to fade out earlier than the bigger guys. I'm OK with investing at the WR position, a weakness becomes an instant strength.

Not sure if VJax is a good run blocker, but he's got the size.

Dear Mistamoe

I hate to keep asking you for advice, but it seems like you are the only person I can trust to give me clear and nonjudgmental answers to my questions.

(I mean, can you imagine Red telling me to kill myself? Like hey wow -- and I would have never guessed Red is so into over-the-top dramatics.)

Well anyways, here’s the problem.

Last October, in honor of Breast Awareness Month, my (then) boyfriend gave me a pink DM5 jersey.

Yeah, yeah I know what you’re thinking -- oh no, not an interdivisional relationship-- because he was an Eagles fan, while I will bleed burgundy and gold until the day I die.

And sure enough, our relationship was pretty much over at that point anyways -- in addition to the on-the-field issues, we had problems with sexual incompatibility and commitment issues -- in that he was never going to be able to keep a hot blooded woman like me fully satisfied with that “little man” of his, and besides, he was bull goose raving loony mad too -- and really needed to be committed to Arkham Asylum or something.

I also don’t know why he thought I would ever want a pink jersey when I am so clearly a leather and PVC type of woman, but at least he didn’t give me the pink TR7 jersey that seems to be so popular among the “rainbow warrior” crowd in Dallas.

The trouble is, as you now well know, DM5 was playing for Philly at the time -- and so this pink jersey might look okay at a passing glance from a distance, on closer examination you can clearly see the Eagles logo and wording. So there’s no way in the world I could ever wear it -- but I still kept it around for sentimental reasons -- and thought I might be able to use it to clean the mud off my spiked, 6” stiletto heel, thigh-high boots or something.

From my earlier question, you also know I can’t really afford to buy another jersey, but I am willing to make a sacrifice for a compatible player who is willing to make a long-term commitment. However, I am also worried that I have yet to see much evidence that DM5 is willing to make a long-term commitment to my favorite football franchise and vice versa.

So here’s my question:

Should I go out, take a chance, and buy a real burgundy and gold DM5 jersey, or should I just drop by the Halloween costume shop up the street and see if I can rent a DM5 jersey for the remainder of the season?

Sincerely

Still Stumped

If you think you are the only one, then you haven't read any of my posts (not that my posts should be a destination for you or anything).

Even before the season, I was saying that VJax was not value for this passing game based on McNabb's whole career. He's proven to be a prolific passer in this league over the last dozen years without needing a proto-typical #1 WR (not that I think VJax is even that).

Its a rumor that I am hearing could very well happen. Don't ever buy into what Shanny says, becuase he says a whole bunch of nothing. Twitter is going wild right now, with rumors that talks between Redskins and Chargers are heating up.

You never know. Shanny may be saying the rumors of V Jacks to the Vikes are just rumors...Or the Chargers asking price is just Rumors. All I am saying is, don't close the book on it, until its 4:30.

DT has very little off the field drama plus he's a better blocker than VJax. Why give up on him when he has shown a tendancy to get it on gameday?

Isn't that the pass/fail portion of being an NFL player? Some guys practice great and don't make plays on Sundays. I think DT is just the opposite.

Posted by: elfreako | September 22, 2010 3:13 PM | Report abuse

for those who wonder if giving up a 2nd round pick is good value for VJax, I present the following:

Redskins 2nd round picks, going back to 1980 (not just the Vinny years):

DT11, MK12, Fred Davis, Rocky MacIntosh, Taylor Jacobs, LaDell Betts, Fred Smoot, Jon Jansen, Stephen Alexander, Greg Jones, Cory Raymer, Tre Johnson, Reggie Brooks, Shane Collins, Andre Colline, Chip Lohmiller, Brian Davis, Wally Kleine, Marcus Koch, Walter Murray, Tory Nixon, Bob Slater, Steve Hamilton, Richard Williams, Vernon Dean, Matt Mendenhall.

I don't see ANYBODY on this list that is better than Vincent Jackson.

Posted by: zcezcest1

First off Jon Jansen was a stud RT for most of his career so he easily ranks above VJ. Fred Davis and Rocky MacIntosh are both young players with a lot of upside so it is too early to judge them. Chip Lohmiller was the best kicker in the league for many years and was the last dominant kicker we had. Most of the others (I don't remember some of them so I can't say all) were not locker room problems and did not have off-the-field issues like VJ.
