Offensive line's breakdowns result in 7 sacks

Not to be lost in the controversy surrounding Redskins Coach Mike Shanahan's decision to pull starting quarterback Donovan McNabb in the waning moments of Sunday's loss at Detroit is the play of Washington's offensive line, which allowed a season-high seven sacks to the Lions.

"We feel like we prepared as well as we could, and that's been an emphasis for us in pass protection," guard Kory Lichtensteiger said. "And for whatever reason -- like I said, I haven't seen [the film] yet -- but for whatever reason, we had a few breakdowns."

McNabb now has been sacked 22 times on the season; only Chicago's Jay Cutler has been sacked more. Those sacks have resulted in 155 yards in losses; again, only Cutler has lost more yardage.

Midway through the season, McNabb is on a pace to be sacked nearly as much as any previous year in his career. In 2000, his first season as a starter for Philadelphia, he was dropped 45 times. He was sacked 44 times in 2007 and 43 times in 2003. McNabb suggested Sunday afternoon that he could have done more to help his line.

"I wouldn't say that my offensive line let me down," he said. "I could have made some people miss. That's something that obviously I've been doing for years, and I can make some guys miss and get the ball out of my hands and recognize some different things."

Backup Rex Grossman was sacked on the first snap he took as McNabb's replacement, putting the Redskins on pace to allow 46 sacks this year. They have allowed that many just six times in franchise history - 46 in both 2009 and 1978, 48 in 1984, 52 in both 1977 and '85, and a team-record 61 in 1998.

Detroit entered the game with 16 sacks in six games, tied for 11th in the NFL. They now have 23 and are tied for sixth-most in the league.

What went wrong?

"We didn't do our job," center Casey Rabach said. "I don't know how else to answer the question."

A few breakdowns? Your QB got pressured on 26 of 36 snaps and you call this a few breakdowns.

Maybe you should just stop talking and work on doing your job.

You have to decipher his code:

QB pressure = business as usual
sack without fumble = unplanned contingency
sack with fumble = breakdown

Unless Dockery has completely lost it, and can't play worth anything anymore, you've got to give him a chance out there. As everyone has already said, our problems are on the interior of the line, where Hicks, Rabach, and Lichtensteiger have played terribly. (It goes without saying that Heyer sucks, and I actually can't believe he is still in the NFL...)

It's one thing to be arrogant; it's another to be stubborn. Sometimes they go hand in hand. Seems Shanny is both...

If MS is so determined to play Lichtensteiger then MS should move him to center cuz Rabach needs to be benched and put Doc back in at RG.

Not saying this is the answer, but Rabach has proven he is done at center.

Posted by: kerzon417 | November 1, 2010 2:33 PM | Report abuse

Been lurking here letting you guys carry the (posting)ball for quite awhile...the only positive i can say about the "move" is that Shanny is not afraid to make changes... That being said I hope he takes the bye week to reinsert doc and replace rabach with montgommery, no Qb can play behind the pourous oline we have...as far as mcnabb i have been saying (to myself since i haven't been posting) that when he has protection and a play is there to made he needs to make the play. to many easy throws or open guys missed. I see why philly fans were always ready to get rid of this guy. Once he stopped being a running QB and decided to stay almost excluesively in the pocket his effectiveness dropped by several orders of magnitude....

One thing about O-lines, is they need consistency and time to gel. Its no wonder our Oline has performed worse the more they switch it up, and rotate guys in by series. The first couple of games with some continuity going back to OTAs and camp is when they played their best...

Posted by: chrislarry | November 1, 2010 2:42 PM | Report abuse

Boy, the local media just eats this up...with their general dislike for the owner, this is a great opportunity to claim the season is going to collapse.

Look at the title in Monday's sports section:

DOOMED IN DETROIT

...you'd think they lost in the playoffs, were routed by 35, or were eliminated from playoff contention with the loss.

Geez. This team is average, which is a big improvement from outright stinking last year at 4-12. In addition, they managed to be "average" with DM playing far worse than most would have believed. This team finishes 8-8, which is what I figure, that's a step up.

That said, DM should not have been benched. There isn't any true point in pulling him at that point in the game - the point where you want someone with his experience and resume IN the game - and I think the staff just overthought the situation.

Hopefully MS realizes this was a mistake, and at least privately admits it to his QB. Publicly, I'm not expecting anything.

DM will start in two weeks, as he should. The bigger question should be...is there anyone that can block at the interior line spots, and what will it take to get Dockery back in the lineup?

A jailbreak on every single play does not constitute merely "not doing our job". This constitutes getting completely and utterly schooled by the DLine of a 1-5 team.

For the life of me, I will never understand why Dockery is inactive. That's just stupid, stupid, stupid.

Here's to hoping that the Skins use the 2011 2nd round pick on either a guard or RT.

As a team over the past few weeks we have stunk up the joint. Our interior OL can't block anyone, our defense is giving up a lot of yards and if we don't get turn overs we aren't stopping anyone from scoring. Yesterday was the worse. 4 TD passes against, 7 sacks, no rushing...but still, some how we had the lead. Then our Pro-Bowl veteran QB threw into triple coverage like a first year QB. I think Coach had seen enough. (I know I had). He couldn't bench the whole team but he could bench it's leader. And he did. A message needed to be sent and he sent it loud and clear. The only question now is how the team responds to it.

Since the controversy is bound to rage this week, realize that Jason Campbell played this week with 2 starting WRs that had a CAREER TOTAL(!) total of 9 receptions coming into 2010. His #3 WR had ZERO coming into 2010 and his 4th WR (more of a return guy) had 47. These 4 guys COMBINED had basically the same number of career catches as our own Fred Davis.

Seems like the Shanny's may be guilty of believing more in the system than the players.

Signing Grossman was odd as well as releasing Colt for the guy we have now at 3rd string.

It certainly appears now that Shanny juniors system dictates the type of players they want.

This may have something to do with the wide receivers we currently have and maybe why McNabbs passing isn't quite clicking yet.

2 new drafted lineman and 1 FA OG. 3 new starters on the line for next yr

Didn't we do some of this already:

the drafted
Trent Williams
Erik Cook
Selvish Capers

the FA/traded for
Jammal Brown
Artis Hicks

That's 5 players brough in to help re-build last year's bad offensive line.

Only now, it's this year's bad offensive line.

What might help the line in any event is consistent playcalling where the run is emphasized over the pass.

I'd use top picks on a top notch young back andinterior lineman.

We need good ball carriers and blockers.

Cook & capers- both 7th rounders I believe, could eventually be usaed for depth

Jammal brown- starter, cureently at 70% id say. Hopefully another yr back hell be back stronger, he's our starter

Hicks- brought in as a back up n thrust into the role of starter, good he's getting the experience but id prefer him to come in off the bench.

Id like to see a tall WR n then 2 lineman. Realistically our needs dictate 2 top choices to be OL. I say C, then OG.

These choices would make shannys initally pick ups the foundation n give us our depth with starting experience

Posted by: beep-beep | November 1, 2010 3:15 PM | Report abuse

Theory...

Shanny wants McNabb to get hurt.

1) They keep telling him to step up in the "pocket" and stand tall in there... which would result in an obvious visit to the hospital.

2) He keeps shuffling the O Line like a deck of cards in order to break down any continuity.

3) He cast off Devin Thomas, presumably in favor of Joey Galloway. Hey, it's one less viable option on passing downs.

4) He benched Dockery. We know Dockery is decent. We've seen him play. Shanny knows this, too, and prefers McNabb get hurt.

Why? Why would Shanny want McNabb hurt?

Because he doesn't want to sign him to a long term deal. He couldn't turn him down in April, but he REALLY wants his "own" rookie QB to mold.

Sad, but I fear there is more truth to this preposterous theory than I would care to believe.

Was intrigued by McNabb's comments regarding young Shanny's inputs into yesterday's 2-minute drills -- and old Shanny's discussion of related terminology.

Impression I got was that play calls were coming in from the sidelines -- but McNabb either couldn't understand or couldn't execute them.

So who do you blame, McNabb, Grossman, or Shanny x 2?

Eight games into the season and an 11 year vet doesn't know the 2 minute drill? Not surprising from someone that didn't know that a game ends in a tie at the end of O/T.

All you McNabb lovers that are excusing his poor play with a bad OL and no "big play" receiver didn't give Campbell those excuses last year. So why aren't you piling on McNabb?

Hey Shanny, you don't go for a 2 point conversion AT THE START OF THE 4TH QTR AND LEADING BY 5!!!! I don't care what the "sheet" says the ONLY time you go for two is when your trailing and the 2 point conversion will reduce the # of possessions you need to get even with your opponent.

Why was Banks ever released for another team to pick him up?

I'm tired of the "D" and McNabb talking about "executing". We're half way through the season and they've been working on this since June(Except for Big AH who seems to have caught on just fine).

We gave up ANOTHER #2(Jason Taylor) for another 1 and done(with any luck). NO EXTENSION FOR DM5!!!

Should have seen what JC could do with a OL and used that #2 to help improve it.

All that said, we are not even as good as our record indicates. We have not won a single game convincingly. We were completely outplayed in all 4 loses despite being in 2 of them till the end(both at home). I expected 8-8 this year and we're on track for that but some of the decisions Shanny is making makes me wonder what he's thinking. Really? Going for 2 with a 5 point lead. Coahes don't have McNabb ready for a 2 minute drill half way through the season? We are STILL a mess. JC led the Raider offense to over 500 yards in consecutive games IN HIS NEW OFFENSE!! ( Oh, wouldn't you love to intercept the text messages betwen JC and Zorn!!!)

Just wondering: Do the two times that McNabb & Rabach got their feet tangled count as sacks?

Because if so, that's really five sacks and two fluky plays.

Not that giving up five sacks is okay, but it's still better than seven.

Posted by: freakzilla | November 1, 2010 3:25 PM | Report abuse

Moss, Moss, and Armstrong instantly improves our running game. Putting Dock back at guard, makes us wild card contenders. Fire or demote Kyle and have daddy calling the plays, will advance us at least one game in playoffs. Keeping all personnel and draft decisions out of the hands of daddy and Danny, will make us serious contenders in 2 years. Left alone the way it s now, it will be 5 years before we put a squad with depth together. We're still better off though than if Vinny was still here.

Devin Thomas couldn't play, either, right?
C'mon, man.

Let me put it to you this way:

He'll cut EVERY SINGLE player on offense before he sits his son down. That should tell you something. Calling repeated pass plays in a game like yesterday's was criminally negligent. If McNabb wasn't so tough and elusive, he leaves that game on crutches.

A game like that would have ended Tom Brady's career.

Watching R. Moss it's clear he needs, responds, and likes tough love. He apparently has a lot of admiration for Bill Belichek. I now looks as if Bill was able to keep Moss from hurting himself for much of the time.

Is it possible that Shanny and is authoritative coaching would be able to produce the same results? And despite the benching, McNabb could be a person he confides in as well.

The right to be the team's--and league's--biggest clown.

Moss's downfall is what happens when all a receiver wants to do is run 'go' routes and play 'jump ball' in the end zone.

Moss won't go near the middle of any defense that's not intended to extend his contract.

What should rankle Vikes fans is the cost paid to acquire a guy in Moss not kept long enough to get sweat stains on his uniform.

Somewhere, Bill Belichek is thinking, "I'll add insult to injury and bring Moss back.....and then laugh my way to the NFL draft."

This is indeed a rather curious development.

What it means is that our porous offensive line 'max protects' well.

But what I think the issues behind the Shanahan v. McNabb Benching are related to his making reads--and accurate throws--when the ball has to come out quickly to combat pressure.

Given the way the lions blitzed off the edge, you'd think there was something open behind what was rather obvious pressure.

And the failure to makes plays against that pressure is probably what's really behind Donnie's benching and eventual trade.

Shanny: I thought I already explained it to ya?

Moss fills a major need IMMEDIATELY, and would even take some pressure off McNabb - My fear would be he'd become a Cowboy-But why would they hire him for 8 games when the season is toast?? We could create a deep=ball MONSTA if we give McNabb the time..

Posted by: frak | November 1, 2010 3:51 PM | Report abuse

Normally, I'd want no parts of Moss. But I'm starting to think this team already full of controversy with AH and now McNabb wouldn't hurt for one more if it fills one of our most glaring holes. I'd rather get line help, but this might be a great way to mend fences between McNabb and Shanahan...

Listening to Shanny's press conference...now he's saying cardiovascular endurance, hamstring injury were major factors in decision to pull him...just said he went into the game knowing #5 would not run the 2 min offense....even said he considered holding him out all together....says #5 is hampered badly by injuries.

Frankly, he's digging himself into a hole here, I don't know what the heck is going on here. Something is rotten in Denmark.

If he clears waivers, they should definitely sign him.

Randy Moss giving the Skins SOMETHING is far better than Joey Galloway giving the Skins NOTHING.

Sign him and cut Galloway so he can have #84.

All you McNabb lovers that are excusing his poor play with a bad OL and no "big play" receiver didn't give Campbell those excuses last year. So why aren't you piling on McNabb?

Posted by: vegasskinsfan | November 1, 2010 3:19 PM | Report abuse

We gave Campbell those excuses...and others...for several years...and then after 50+ starts with a losing record came to the conlcusion that he wasn;t part of the solution either.

If McNabb gets that many starts and is sub-500, you'll hear it.

Otherwise, keep your stupid apples-to-oranges analogies to yourself.

Randy Moss Released By Vikings Following Week 8 Loss To Patriots

Posted by: jimmy_the_crickett | November 1, 2010 4:03 PM | Report abuse

Shanny is clearly in wrong profession.

Obviously much more suited to the medical profession.

Must have x-ray vision or something.

And healing hands that have been touched by God himself.

Can diagnose injuries that even players themselves don't know about -- and perform medical miracles too.

Witness his continuing support for CP26 -- who is still on the roster, and assuring all that he will play again sometime this year -- maybe late December or early January -- presumably in some sort of combined jock strap and truss contraption.

The NFL Network reported that Moss has been waived by the Vikings, a move that one source said is the work of coach Brad Childress and Childress alone. The Vikings have yet to make an official announcement, but the league is abuzz about where Moss could land. He must clear waivers, and there is a good possibility some team will put in a claim for him

If anything, those sack numbers actually understate the problem, as McNabb has done a good job of feeling pressure and moving around in the pocket or getting out of the pocket to avoid even more sacks. A less mobile QB (like Cutler) would have been sacked a lot more often.

Posted by: nrjlh | November 1, 2010 4:16 PM | Report abuse

If someone claims Moss before the Skins can, so be it...But Shanahan will rue the day he allowed Big Randy to slip from his claim-able hands with McNabb in the cockpit...Lets see Montgomery at Center and Dockery back in dock, also..Rabach killed us Sunday...

Posted by: frak | November 1, 2010 4:20 PM | Report abuse

I shudder to think how many times JC would have been sacked with the weak O-Line that Shanahan put together. Starting Lichtesteiger over a solid veteran like Dockery? Keeping Stephon Heyer as a backup tackle knowing that Jamaal Brown would not be 100% this year? Re-signing Rabach when he's been in decline for 3 years? The Redskins O-Line this year except Williams (who had a bad game yesterday) is actually worse than a year ago if that's possible. It's ridiculous to blame McNabb when he's running for his life on almost every play and that's with only a 4-man rush.

As much as people may hate CP26, he at least is good in pass protection and can pick up blitzers with the best of them. It's no coincidence that sacks have went up since he went out after Week since we have no experience RB in pass protection.

once again, this is an 8 - 8 team that could swing a game or two in either direction depending on injuries (CP, Torrain) and penalties (the refs helped us in Chicago, and fckd us in Detriot).

that does not make losing any easier. especially to detriot when you knew the skins were too mentally feeble to get up for it properly, and especially because it had so much to do with the offensive line sucking so it opened an old wound

Yeah, I'm sure he's really scared, having put up 46 points per game his last two outtings.

But you know, I'd take him and Grad (plus the second rounder) back ahead of McNabb and Grossman any day.

Says who? You? Where’s your evidence? Did you forget about Dock’s sieve like pass blocking numbers in Buffalo? Not saying LichtenHoople is the answer by any means, but Dock ain’t either.

But lotsa luck Shanny, using undersized linemen in the NFC East. Be nice to have a second rounder to spend on an OLineman.

rabach has been finished" at center for 3 yrs only so-called whites made excuses for him claiming how smart he is, scrappy a gamer etc.. the reality is he is a sub standard bumb who was mediocre at cleveland now hamm-o-KLAN has inserted a younger version(lichensteiger)at LG the line is weaker. hicks is better than the above 2 and cook the rookie should replace cro-magnon man rabach asap put dockery back in at guard for coach hamm-o-KLAN'S step-son lichentsteiger run the ball down hill and off-tackle maybe the o-line will make a turnaround but running out the same center and LG every game as now assembled and the ole DIC-tater claiming the qb is the problem should get this cretin fired..but it won't he is a so-called white man right? I do think there is something to the theory that hamm-o-KLAN wants mcnabb to fail here again this is the mind of a so-called white man with his bellicose superiority complex..not far fetched with me.

Posted by: randysbailin | November 1, 2010 6:42 PM | Report abuse

I'm already on record saying DM had a bad game, but people are right about the OL, it is almost as bad as last year. Rabach and Lichtensteiger are terrible and how they and the coaches can watch their performance on film and not see the problem, is a big problem! The Redskins won championships with the Hogs and why we got away from that tradition is beyond me. These guys can't pass block, they can't run block, that can't screen block, they can't fart and block. I know this has become a pass happy league, but tough, down in the dirt OL men, a grind it out back, and the ability to control the clock and throw downfield when needed is our tradition and we need to get back to that.

My only comment will be this....Derrick Dockery is a multi-year Pro Bowl Guard. He has been size and talent for the position than Lichtensteiger. It makes zero sense why he's not playing.
Shannahan says Lichtensteiger fits the system better. CLEARLY NOT!!!!! Lichtensteiger has been flagged several times, he whiffs on DL's all the time and without Portis in to pick up his trash, McNabb is getting killed!
Best thing about Dock has been the fact that you really rarely hear his name during a game. Figuring that lineman primarly just get called out for bad things like penalties or missing a block, that's a good thing.
There's more holes, I know, in the O-line and Dock isn't a fix all, but he's an awful big patch to a leaky line.
Fix what you can Shannahan!
Oh, and Mr. Allen, if you've got a moment, please sign Randy Moss.

Dan Snyders head stone will read-We played without an offensive line. For whatever reason Dan and his minions keep trying find offensive linemen at garage sales and then we get Clinton killed, Donovan killed and Jason killed. Every great team has a great offensive and defensive lines. Teams like Dallas and Washington that are below average because they are run by owners who know nothing about football do not have offensive lines. Casey was trash dumped by baltimore. Lichtenstein was in Denvers trash. None of the offensive line will have a job when they leave here. There is one NFL lineman on the team. One down and at least five to go. This team is not very good and will not get better until you build an offensive line. Snyder has had a terrible offensive line since he came here. That is his trademark.
