Redskins sign two rookie wide receivers and a cornerback

The Redskins have added three undrafted rookies to their roster: wide receivers Brandon Banks and Shay Hodge and cornerback Melvin Stephenson.

The trio apparently was the best of the group of more than 20 undrafted rookies who attended the team's last minicamp on a tryout basis. They were rewarded for their efforts with contracts Monday morning.

Banks, listed at 5-foot-7, 150 pounds, comes from Kansas State. He posted a 4.25-second 40-yard dash time and might have to earn his way onto the final roster as a return specialist. Hodge is a Mississippi product and was rated the 25th-best receiver prospect by NFLScout.com prior to last month's draft. Last year he caught 70 passes for 1,135 yards and eight touchdowns; he is Ole Miss' all-time leading receiver..

Stephenson comes from UTEP, where he posted 58 tackles and had two interceptions last season. He returned one interception for a touchdown.

With the four new players signed today, the Redskins opened the first of their organized team activities today with 79 players under contract, one fewer than the maximum allowed. This means that soon they'll likely have to make cuts when they make further additions.

While the official roster is nearly 80 deep, there are actually more players than that expected at OTAs this week. In addition, veterans Rocky McIntosh, Carlos Rogers and Reed Doughty are all restricted free agents who've yet to sign their tenders.

The six rookies drafted last month won't likely sign until closer to training camp. They're allowed to participate in the OTAs only if their college has wrapped up its spring semester. For example, the University of Oklahoma held its commencement ceremony last weekend, which means that left tackle Trent Williams, the Redskins' first-round pick, should be free this week. At UCLA, however, the semester doesn't end until June 11, which means that wide receiver Terrence Austin, the team's seventh-round pick, won't be able to participate for a couple of more weeks.

5-7, 150 pounds: I vote for the nickname "The Mosquito" for Banks. Well, if defenders can even find him on the field, they'll still have trouble chasing him down...

I am glad to see the Redskins at least taking a look at some young guys. I was beginning to think the new strategy was to fill the roster with aging veterans.

Ah... yeah I don't have the patience for poker.

'All in'
'Call'
'All in on a pair of twos?'
'Two words: pool bar'

I'm looking forward to hitting Casa Fuente in Caesars for a cigar I can't justify on the golf course, the Wynn Buffet, and of course the Wynn Cabana Bar.

I'm not big into gambling, but I might try some black jack if we can find a table that's less than $15 a hand (Christ almighty!)

From Hogshaven-

Vonnie Holiday has never had any off-field problems, in fact, it's quite the opposite given his many charitable endeavors.

Although Vonnie only started 3 games, he saw a lot of action and played well as the right defensive end. This makes for an interesting scenario since Haynesworth was slotted to be the RDE with Jarmon as his backup. On the left side it's Phillip Daniels with Carriker backing him up. I can't say this really adds pressure to Albert since he already got paid, but it does give me the notion the Redskins are making a contingency plan. At the same time, it could also mean that Jarmon is not physically ready or able to handle the right side as well. As Jason Reid reported, he is light for a DL at 6'5 285, but it's clear the Redskins are not happy with the RDE position.

Caesars pool is always winning awards, but the Wynn is a nice place to relax. Secluded, peaceful, next to the bar.. all the things I like in a pool.

I've heard the cheap black jack tables are on Freemont Street (Binions, etc), but then again, I've also heard you get what you pay for. But are some things which are just a rip off, among them being the top clubs charging $450 for a bottle of Grey Goose, so we might just give it a whirl.

Good luck on your bid to take over the WSOP world.

The key is to hit up the liquor stores on your first night and bring some heavy pregame material back to your room. Keep the club drinks to a minimum and the comped drinks to a maximum.

Also, admitting that liquor takes precedence over, say, a change of clothes and a toothbrush is difficult for most of us.

I guess Shanny rode them hard at the last minicamp, so he's kind of giving them a little break, which is fine with me, we don't need any season ending injuries or long rehabs in OTA's or minicamps. Also, there's no contact allowed in OTA's, so maybe they are limited to what they can do on the field, maybe it's more classroom stuff learning the systems

Overrated excuse, if a guy can play his position then let him play. Most teams arent hurting for ST guys so badly that their dropping them from their pre cut 80 man rosters.

In MM's case Shanny just wanted to let people know hes running the show and has little regard for players from the prev regime.

Andre Carter had a great year last year!
Hats off to him.
However that was in a 4-3 as a DE.

Carter couldn't play OLB and that was 5 years ago. He certainly won't be able to play it now.

AC is a man w/out a position; I suspect if no one attempts to get him, he will be cut before the season begins.

Had this conversation with some friends the other weekend. Some guys suggested those of us who knew all the names of adult stars had some sort of issue.

I got more than my fair share during my day. Now, Im married with a young child. The wife and I still tee it up about once a week BUT that leaves 6 other days.

I love women just like I love sports. So if I know the names and stats of all these dudes its not to hard for me to remember the names of my favorite chicks who I watch get banged online. And if I may add a name here: Roxy Reynolds.....

When I knew I wasn't alone in the viewing of porn universe...

One day a about 8 years ago I was home on leave. Being in the Army is when most cats get introduced to porn, at least it was with me. Of course I've seen Playboy magazines, but that ish ain't ish compared to some of the stuff in the movies.

Anyway, I had a "flick" up on my laptop being viewed in windows media player.. my boys wanted to check out my music library, but since the thing went to stand by mode I had forgot that I had the flick up. So they move the mouse pad and BAM! HUGE PHAT ASS ON THE SCREEN GETTIN' POKED!

I remember feeling so embarrassed and like 2 feet tall until them bamas started getting hyped because they never seen said "flick" before.

Everyone of them wanted a copy. And called me a bama for holding out on the "spankies".

That sh*t was so damn funny now I look back on it. Dudes get faded and still talk about that ish to this day. Funny times...

Doughty-Landry both are garbbage. I always see the back of their jerseys as they trail pass catchers down the field. Landry had an terrible year. Doughty was giving the starting job out of sympathy. The young kid he replaced had one mental mistake and his time diminshed from there. McIntosh stays disabled- not the typical tough guy from ROCKY-TOP University. Barnes, waste matter- That's good, make the secondary compete for playing time but we are lacking depth there and at linebacker( natural linebackers) Orakpo, terrible in pass coverage, hope eventually he can go back to defensive end and now other naturall D-Ends will be playing linebacker.

AsstGM,
there's difference between "hand-timed" and auto-timed. back in green's day it was all hand timed.

http://www.listafterlist.com/tabid/57/listid/5923/sports++recreation/nfls+unofficial+fastest+40yard+dash+times.aspx

"Darrell Green, who once ran the 40-yard dash in an unofficial time of 4.09 seconds, had a collegiate best of 10.08 s in the 100 meters. Justin Gatlin, who ran 9.85 s for a gold medal at the 2004 Olympic 100 metres, before being banned from the sport for abuse of performance drugs, has a verified 40-yard dash best of 4.42 s. This reflects the difference that timing methods can cause to a runner's time."

Puzzling to me, too. Why tell Lorenzo Alexander and JJ to lighten up to play linebacker and then bring in every gray haired free agent for tryouts on the d-line? My thinking is there will be some schemes where they will need some bigger linebackers. Going out on a limb here and predicting that Haslett plans on using 4-3, 3-4, and even some 2-5 fronts. Sounds like it will be crazy for offensive coordinators to scheme around, but I just hope it doesn't become too complicated for the players. They have to react and not be thinking about where they need to line up for the next play.

Yeah, but 'Zo was playing line positions, where it was five steps and play done. He's got the burst but does he have the range? As a linebacker, he's going to have to get around a lot more. To me, it suggests that what is planned for him is more of a situational role, like more of a running down only player.

As for Jarmin, the kid has talent. If they can't make a linebacker out of him, maybe they trade him to a 4-3 team. He was starting to come into his own before his injury last year and somebody had to notice. It just seems a shame that he was brought in to play in a 4-3 and he really doesn't fit into a 3-4. I feel for the guy. He has to recover from a major injury, shed some pounds and learn a new position that requires him to be more mobile. That is a tall stack of changes for a player to manage in one offseason. Maybe he is a candidate for a "mystery injury" in the preseason that lands him on IR.

Yeah, I'd hate to see Zo switch, when he looses that weight it takes away his versatilty to play so many positions. I'd like to see Jarmon keep up the momentum he built up last year, but such is life in the NFL. His best option is if Haslett still puts in some 4-3 and he can try to rush as an end

Posted by: RedSkinHead | May 17, 2010 2:50 PM | Report abuse

I really hope they don't try to convert Jarmon to LB. It makes no sense to me. If they guy can slide inside and play some DT in a 4-3 I don't see how he cant play end in a 3-4. Plus a scouting report on him when he was at UK says that he can play end in either system and that his strengths are that he is solid at the point of attack, agaisnt the run, and playing with leverage. His weaknesses were that he was not overly quick or explosive and had average agility. Sounds like a DE to me.

I think a lot of people (maybe including the coaches)are overthinking this switch in defensive schemes. I looked at the successful 3-4 teams and a lot of them have DEs in the 275-290 lb range. Jarmon was listed at 277 and is still young enough to bulk up and get stronger. Plus if they are gonna mix up the fronts like we have been told I really don't see the need to transfer all of these guys to LB when it doesnt play to their strengths. If we truly don't have enough OLBs then we either need to go get some true ones or play more 4-3 until we have the players that fit the scheme.

Posted by: VaTerp1 | May 17, 2010 3:21 PM | Report abuse

barring injury or fumblitis I think we may have a punt returner.

Posted by: ged0386 | May 17, 2010 3:21 PM | Report abuse

I wholeheartedly agree regarding Jarmon.
He has the frame and is young enough, being listed at 277, he could be beefing up this year, as a backup and next year be at 290.

He definitely is a DE and was drafted to be a DE as well in a 4-3. The extra beef, would help him vs the run in his 3-4 role as a DE.

Disagree completely. In the past 2 years we have signed two guys who are both bigger and less talented than Haynesworth after they sat out multiple seasons in 1 case and with a sever injury in another case. It will not be a hard sell at all.

And $40 mil is a lot of coin no matter how you look at it. Can it be squandered? Of course, but he still got $40 mil. I know nothing about Big Al's personal spending habits or long term investments and will not make any assumptions. He has enough RIGHT now to never worry about playing football again. Whether or not he blows that money in the future is really immaterial to the discussion.

Disappointed with the Brandon Banks signing.

Banks is trouble waiting to happen. Much like Penn State qb Daryll Clark, Banks is just another punk. Folks at Kansas State didn't have much positive to say about him; pretty much the same as the folks at Penn State said about Clark. Except the folks at Penn State were barely able to contain themselves in expressing how happy they were to finally see the back of Clark.

The vets will sort out young Banks in short order.

cow tipping - rural activity in which the perpetrators sneak up on a sleeping, standing cow in the dead of night and push it over sideways. Tends not to work for several reasons:

1. Cows don't sleep standing up (unlike horses, which do), nor do they zone out while standing up unless they're seriously ill.
2. Cows are quite heavy.
3. Dairy farmers hate this sort of shti and will probably bring it all over your dumb azz if they spot you trying.

I find it hard to believe that a guy this small won't be chronically injured once he starts to get hit by NFL LBs and FBs running full-steam downfield on a kickoff. It sure seems that so little body mass wouldn't be able to absorb that kind of punishment. Maybe I'm wrong.

For the guy going to Vegas for the WSOP, I live here in Vegas. Lee's Discount Liquor is the big chain here, really good prices. My friend's GF works for their corporate office so I'll plug a little. They have several stores but none near the strip. Probably a 5-10 minute ride each way in a cab/rental but worth what you'd save over casino bars.

So we have no use for a 6'4'' 220lb. WR.

But we have space for a 5'7'' 150 lb. guy.

Oh, right! He's fast and plays special teams!

Wait a minute...so does that guy Terrence Austin who we just drafted that seems to have taken Mitchell's role on the depth chart.

OH...I see. We need competition at all the spots, so this Banks cat was signed to PUSH the rookie draft pick we just got.

But that begs the question. Who is now going to push Banks for the spot of pushing Austin who pushed Mitchell out?

Hmmmm...the only thing to do is cut another player - maybe Devin Thomas this time - so that we can make room for yet ANOTHER undrafted rookie WR to push to 2 undrafted rookie wide receivers who are there to push the rookie drafted wide receiver.

I'm just glad there's a plan in place...

posted this a week or two ago, when Banks appeared among the audition candidates:

http://www.profootballresearchers.org/Coffin_Corner/20-06-772.pdf

it's a bit dated (1998) but the trend is clear.

small players are mostly limited to the historical era.

Darren Sproles (5'6", 180 lbs) is certainly short, but he has more mass than most of those guys.

haven't been following closely today, so someone might have already said this, but Trindon Holliday (2010 6th round pick to the Texans, 197 overall) weighs in at 5'5", 166 lbs and can run the 40 in something like 4.2-4.3.

not counting Banks out, and part of me wants to see him play just for the novelty factor.

I think comparing Banks and Marko isn't right.

Shanahan is looking for return specialists and he's bringing in a bunch of guys that aren't going to play much at WR. Austin and Banks among these guys. Of course, we've had these super quick return specialist guys in camp before -- Dorsey and Alridge last year -- they're all long shots. Antonio Brown from a few years back was another one who could fly. Always thought Gibbs didn't give him enough of a chance.

Marko, on the other hand, had to make it as a WR. I liked what I saw of MM, getting rid of him seems a mistake. He was the #4 WR, seems it would be wise to let someone beat him out in training camp. But who knows what happened and maybe letting him go was the right thing.

Not sure that I understand this Shay Hodge signing.

He's smaller and slower than Marko Mitchell and doesn't seem to be any kind of special teams ace.

Marko really must have not impressed in mini-camp.

Posted by: p1funk | May 17, 2010 6:38 PM

The Skins did not release Marko Mitchell because of Shay Hodge, nor Brandon Banks. Marko Mitchell was released because of little known 5-11, 183lbs Anthony Armstrong who wowed the coaching staff during the first mini camp. He also can fly, he runs 4.28 40.

One of the few that agrees with me. Insults flew my way when I said I was concerned with the Skins character -- before the 2009 season began. We all saw the meltdown and a lot of it was character.

Shanahan is a different creature, with big enough ego, so he thinks he can handle character problems. He probably can.

Not sure why he wants to deal with character problems. The old rule in management is that 10% of the people take up 90% of the your time. Why bother inviting them in?

Not sure about the 4.28 figure -- it might be as fanciful as Brandon Banks' 4.25 (Banks' official combine time was 4.43)-- but there's no questioning his ability to embarrass training camp cornerbacks, including some pretty good ones in Miami last season. Thing is, he's 27 years old. Even if he made the club this year (not beyond the realm of possibility), you'd want a couple younger candidates for the practice squad. Hodge was very productive in college -- check out this TD catch from Snead.

"PFT"
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on May 17, 2010 7:32 PM ET

Owner Dan Snyder is disappointed by his defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth.

Haynesworth, for his part, doesn't feel that he's been treated fairly. According to NFL Network's Jason La Canfora, those close to Haynesworth say he feels that he's been sold a bill of goods. The word used was "deceived."

Here's how they are selling it:

Haynesworth was promised before signing he could attack the quarterback when he came to Washington. The Redskins even considered trying to bring his old Titans defensive line coach Jim Washburn to town. Haynesworth had Snyder's ear.

Now that's all changed. He's being asked to occupy blockers, and he can't go around the coaches to get to Snyder anymore.

To this, we say: grow up. Things in life happen that are bigger than you. Coaches get fired, schemes change.

The Haynesworth camp would be better off not giving his side of the story.

`

Though I'm very sympathetic to those who feel like players should be at voluntary camps, I can't remember another "no-show" situation that received so much attention as this one.

I'm stunned that this has become a national story. No one is gonna give in.

Matt Infante, the lead Editor for SB Nations Dolphins website, The Phinsider, had this to say about Holliday:

In Miami's 3-4, Holliday was never a nose tackle. He worked as a defensive end and then kicked inside to defensive tackle when the Dolphins went with four down linemen.

But to me, his greatest asset was in the locker room. He was a great leader. And from what the media said about him, he was as genuinely nice as they come. He was always at his locker after a game - win or lose. He never got short with the media. He answered everything that was asked to him. Many in the South Florida media even said Holliday was the best person they have covered.

Washington got a good player. But they got an even better person. I wish him nothing but the best in Washington. He's a true class act all the way.

Not being an AH apoligist, but I would feel better if an actual reporter talked to AH. Its alway JLA and his mysterious sources close to AH. With the biggest story of the year (insert sarcasm), I would think that some enterprising reporter should be able to track AH down and ask to speak to him.

If AH or one of his flunkies around him won't let that happen, then I think that we would have a story. It seems to be the same two people involved reporting on this JReid and JLA with their continuous contact with sources close to AH.

Just wondering.

leevi & HaPpY TRucKeR, I find it interesting that after weeks and weeks (that feel like eons) of speculation about what Haynie thinks and what the Skins are going to do about it, he's still on the team.

He's the best player on the defense, and I want him to be on the team in 2010. I think this is a bunch of hoo-hah about very little.

I think Albert *may* be upset about the regime change in Washington and the chance he'll be asked (erm, told) to play a lot of NT in a 3-4. And I think it's human nature to be upset when circumstances change under your feet like that.

But I also think the new regime are smart enough to realize the dude (a) is the best player on the defense, (b) isn't really missing a whole heck of a lot in these offseason activities, and (c) isn't going to fetch anything near "equal value" for what's been invested in him so far, in the event of a trade.

Just my two cents... which virtually guarantees he'll be traded, say, in August...

Vegas. Hated it. Couldn't wait to leave. Was there for 2 days. Days dragged like being in jail. Overpriced everything. Bad service on your "free" drinks at the slots and tables. No place to sit down except to gamble. Hard to find there: Water for under $8. Not a water fountain in sight.

Really weird, IMO. Lots of weirdos there. Gambling all night long.

Would be more fun if I was 22 years old, with a bunch of friends out to bag hookers, but with the wife, it really was not fun.

But that's my two cents. I don't gamble, either, so that pretty much makes it senseless. BUT, you only live once, so you might as well see it.

I suggest you stock the wine box with drinks, too. Good idea. Save a couple slots for bottled water, too. It is in the desert after all.

The Coach is doing great. Competition for all positions, no job is safe. Just wish we saw some more linebackers and free safety candidates. So many WR's and DL's. Switching to a 3-4 the number of DL's go down, and LB's go up. Just expected to see more LB's for numbers. And we appear to have an abundance of Strong Safeties that can play, the Free Safety was the hole. Banks sounds like could be real fun to watch. Just hope he survives the first hit and can make it back out of the stands by time we need him again.
