OL Casey Wiegmann visits Ashburn, leaves without contract

At the very least, the Redskins are addressing their offensive line with plenty of conversations.

Offensive linemen Casey Wiegmann visited Redskins Park, according to a league source, but he left town without a contract. It's believed that four linemen have come through Ashburn the past two days, but the team has yet to sign any unrestricted free agents thus far.

"We're going to schedule a lot of visits with players," general manager Bruce Allen said during his radio appearance Friday. "And when you visit with a player it doesn't necessarily mean you're going to make him an offer."

Wiegmann, a 14-year veteran who weighs in at 285 pounds, was the Broncos' starting center and played under Mike Shanahan in 2008. He didn't fit in quite as well with Denver's new blocking scheme and was released last month.

The Redskins have agreed to terms with center Casey Rabach for next season, but Shanahan has said he wants competition at every position. If something works out down the road wtih Wiegmann, it'd seem one of the two could also see some playing time at guard.

Bring in lots of guys... see where they are and what they are looking for... make a list for post draft phone calls.

At the very least... the League can't pin the Redskins to any certain move in the draft.

I think the point of most of these visits is to show that the redskins arent signing everyone as they may have in years past. They can be patient but I would like to see them land Foote, maybe Pashos, and go after Atogwe.

Neither Pashos, nor Hicks were ever confirmed to have visited Ashburn. Accordingly, we can't say that they are in fact the 4 who did visit.

And linemen is the plural of lineman. Since we're talking about 4 different lineman, and 4 is more than one, then linemen is appropriate. Thanks.

Both McNeill and Barron are RFAs. McNeill also has stenosis like Samuels. Williams is 33 and personally I dont think Hadnot is that great. This team cant afford to waste any draft picks even its on lineman.

Offensive lineman Rex Hadnot, one of five unrestricted free agents reported to be visiting the Denver Broncos this weekend, has left Dove Valley without a contract, FOX 31’s Josina Anderson reports.

Hadnot (6′2″, 320 lbs.), a six-year veteran with the Miami Dolphins and Cleveland Browns, started in six games for the Browns in 2009 while struggling through a left knee injury. Hadnot is a versatile lineman with experience at all three interior positions on the offensive line.

Interesting RB option: Justin Fargas was cut by Raiders. I think you could make the case he was the best RB on the raiders, but there was no mandate to play him due to draft/FA status of other players.

Dude is still youngish...with not a ton of wear and tear from pine riding.

Posted by: chrislarry | March 6, 2010 6:44 PM | Report abuse

This slow start to Free Agency for the Skins says this to me:

1) The Redkins are not proceeding like this is a quick fix or acting in desperation. We're not just signing O-lineman at random just to say we did it. This is a good thing.

2) Notice that few if any O-lineman were released from the Redskins. I think Shanahan believes there may be some talent that was not maximized under Zorn.

3) These guys seem to be approaching this like experienced professionals. Whether all this translates to wins on the field remains to be seen.

4) Mark my words...Mike Williams will be a STUD for this team.

My only real concern is what they will try to do to get additional draft picks...we may see some surprises on draft day and some wheeling and dealing.

Yea, there just isn't too many decent young free agents out there this year because of the 6 year rule. Everyone screaming about bringing in older players need to keep that in mind. Thomas Jones was cut too.

A little bit of clarity for a previous comment related to the CFL kicker, Medlock.

He tied the CFL FG record going 7/7.
Hitting from 15, 46, 51, 51, 32, 52 and 17 yards. The game was indoors, at BC Place.
His stats are just ok, especially when you consider that his CFL team plays in a dome and most of his missed attempts were on the road outdoors!

He is an average kicker by NFL standards and I hope when the Redskins finish with him, he returns to the Argos.

I wish him well, but I hope the Skins find a better kicker than Gano & Medlock.

I hope they find a better player at EVERY position than the one they have now. Gano's fine, and if Medlock is better then keep him. Maybe you're right and his stats are just okay, but every player at this level can get better. That's why they have these competitions. We got big problems to fix this off season.

Artis Hicks agrees to three-year deal with Redskins
Posted by Michael David Smith on March 6, 2010 7:27 PM ET
The Washington Redskins and free agent guard Artis Hicks have reached a contract agreement.

PFT's Mike Florio reports that the Redskins and Hicks, who played the last four years for the Vikings, have agreed on a three-year deal.

For the Vikings, it's the second straight day that they've lost an unrestricted free agent, following the departure of running back Chester Taylor on Friday. As one of the final four teams (along with the Saints, Colts and Jets), the Vikings can only sign as many unrestricted free agents as they lose, so Minnesota could now add two unrestricted free agents.

For the Redskins, the signing of Hicks is the latest reminder that -- contrary to the expectations of some -- they're not going hog wild spending Daniel Snyder's money on big-name free agents in an uncapped year. Coach Mike Shanahan would rather build for the long run by adding solid veterans like Hicks, rather than try to put together an all-star team of high-priced free agents.

Good point made earlier on Albright. This should be an easy decision, mostly because there is zero mystery.

So either sign him or let him go. You know what he can do.

Choose to wait, he could go elsewhere.

I've never been a fan of his role, its a bit too specialized for me. But he's very good at it.

Not sure what you mean. The Skins need to find starters at LT, RT and RG. Gone are Sam, Jones and Thom. If they released anybody it would be a backup with min sal so might as well keep what you have until you can find something better, espec when you have already whacked 10 players from the roster.

Some contract #s:

=========================

Artis Hicks' day-long visit with the Washington Redskins ended on a successful note as he agreed to a three-year contract that will be worth a maximum of $9 million.

Hicks, who spent the past four seasons with Minnesota, is expected to get a chance to compete for the starting job at right guard. He came to the Vikings as their starting right guard and played that spot in 2006 and the first part of 2007 before Anthony Herrera took over. As mentioned, the Vikings can now sign two unrestricted free agents.

Hicks' potential replacement on the roster probably would be in line to get a first-year deal in the neighborhood of $3 million.

Not so fast: Pashos leaves D.C. without a deal, visiting Cleveland

Contrary to what we told you a few minutes ago, it's not a done deal for free agent offensive lineman Tony Pashos in Washington.

We're now hearing that Pashos left his visit with the Redskins without a deal and will pay a visit to the Cleveland Browns before he signs anywhere.

Pashos is coming off a 2009 season in which he started just one game for the San Francisco 49ers, but he's a 29-year-old with the talent to be a starting tackle in the NFL, and he'll talk to multiple suitors before signing.

maybe that's why the Skins are initiating talks with Barry Simms. I would rather have Pashos because of his age, but Simms is solid. Anyways, I think if the Skins want Pashos they will get him.

Yea but it sure makes it exciting.

Looks like they didn't back up the armored car for Pashos, who probably thought "WOW, Danny boy is going to set me up for life."

Isn't this off season great.

Keeps everyone on their toes, including the hampsters.

Love it, Love it.

Hail Redskins

Well it's either that or they're lazy or ineffectual. They seem to get scooped on EVERYTHING

Maybe the problem was we have his old coach now with us and he told the front office not to over pay due to his injury that kept him out of most of last season

scamp, I did not believe what I posted for a minute, just threw it out there for laughs.

Hicks, Williams, and Dockery - those are some big guards.

Interesting moves by the Skins. These duds ain't pro bowlers but they could prob hold the fort for awhile. Possibly part of scheme to a) fall back, get more picks and select players that need dev time or b) use top pick for a QB. Shan would like Brad. He wasn't an elite QB like Claus coming out of HS but he worked his butt off and made it to the top.

I've never been a fan of his role, its a bit too specialized for me. But he's very good at it.

You better hope you never find out how important it is. It costs field position, possessions, and games when snapping isn't performed properly.
