One Safety Signs, One Is Released
There's a little light housekeeping here late on the last day of OTAs. The Redskins have signed safety Chris Horton, a seventh-round pick (249th overall) out of UCLA in April, and released safety Justin Hamilton. Horton is the first of this spring's picks to sign.

This is what passes for big news after the OTA's end. So what do we think of this? Good? Bad? Beginning of the end? End of the beginning?

The Skins site says Hamilton was on the roster for almost two weeks.

So, no I don't agree to disagree. I do the opposite. What is that, anyway? Disagree to agree? Disagree to disagree? Disagree just to be unpleasant? You're the master wordsmith -- help me out here.
Posted by: talent evaluator | June 12, 2008 5:23 PM
Hmmm ... the unpleasant one sounds close. Disagreeing to disagree gets into infinity issues ... which might teleport you into Lindsay Applebaum's blog about blogs. [I know that teleportation into a blog about blogs doesn't sound so bad, but it causes a severe outbreak of bonus points ... which landed Greg in the joint.]

Is it me or is the only quote from anyone on defense (whether on the Skins site, the WaPo, or the other paper) something from Smoot?
http://www.redskins.com/news/newsDetail.jsp?id=15747
Not only that, Smoot is not sounding goofy ... he sound like he might actually be, gulp, maturing into a, second gulp, leader ...
[Last season, it seem like Fletcher and Springs where the quote guys.]

Regarding the last unrestricted (which I enjoyed watching; although I had to watch it after work, hence the late post),
Do West Coast offenses generally use multiple backs, like they use multiple TE's and WR's? It seems reasonable - like another way to multiply your options.
In that sort of situation, Betts could be a good threat with CP also on the field (like someone else said).

I always wanted to feud with sween, but I've been coming to this blog forever and this is the only time when I was right and he was wrong. Woo-hoo! In fact, it was the only time when he was wrong. And, probably, the only time when I was right.
Posted by: talent evaluator | June 12, 2008 5:30 PM
Wrong AGAIN, t_ e_! If you read closely enough, I go to great lengths to be wrong ... and often successfully. Most famously was probably this past preseason when I predicted HUGE things for the Detroit Lions, much to the derision and ridicule of the blog faithful ... and I was RIGHT until about Week 8 or 9 ... when I became outstandingly wrong with remarkable consistency for the balance of the season.
Posted by: dcsween | June 12, 2008 5:36 PM
Well am I right or am I wrong? My statement was that the only time I've been right on the blog was when I called sween on his Casey Bramlet love. Now, sween tells me I'm wrong. Of course I'm wrong. I said I've only been right once. So, this makes the second time I'm right. I'm on a streak -- twice in the same day.

Alex,
I'm not tackling that one. If I even tried, I would break my twice-right streak. Sween will be back tomorrow and he can work it out for us.

Just trying to get in a little jibba jabba before heading off to see the great and powerful Frank Black AKA Black Francis, my all-time favorite maker of music, in concert right here in my neighborhood. What a lucky fellow I am.
Why do I have this feeling we're going to slip right past 200K while Cindy's on vacation, with not a bang but a whimper? If we haven't already, I mean. Wow.
Compare that to the rush to 100K... I'll have to root through the archives and find some exemplary threads during that awesome, ridiculous time.

I believe Smoot wanted to become a defensive leader after Champ was let go and when that didn't happen, he became jaded. It helped lead to his dismissal and all the craziness that followed.
I welcome his leadership if he's ready to step it up.

"Big bottoms drive me out of my mind ... how can I leave this behind?"
t_e_, I can't vouch for the either the 7th round safety or the dust speck, but it also bears mentioning that my most famously absurdly wrong prediction ever (circa 2006) was that Warrick Holdman was going to turn his game around "next week". The error of my ways did not become fully apparent until after a couple of months of that during the season.
Finally, I bandwagoned onto Brandon Lloyd early, ardently, and stubbornly ... but did figure out to quit with the helmet episode. Around that time, I put myself on probation regarding wildly speculative predictions ... but once a junkie always a junkie. [My name is dcsween and I'm a wildly speculative football predictor.] That said, Bramlett will ultimately become a starter in the NFL. While I'm at it, Bruce Gradkowski will be a starting QB (like from Week One) within the next couple/few seasons as well.

Well, he's finally got the right coach to make him a starter: Norv Turner. This is the Norv who turnered Heath Shuler and Gus Frerotte into starters.
Posted by: talent evaluator | June 13, 2008 10:32 AM | Report abuse
I'm not saying Bramlett will become the starter in San Diego, just that he will become a starter within the next couple few years somewhere. That said, I think Phillip Rivers is ready to be exposed for the mediocre QB that he is ... a few key injuries on the O-line and Rivers will be made to make room for whoever survives as the #2 guy.
Posted by: dcsween | June 13, 2008 10:40 AM | Report abuse
for the record, I'm with dcsween on Bramlet. I think he has a chance to develop in to a good player. Just because he's 27 and hasn't thrown a pass doesn't mean he won't be a good player. Guys like Trent Green, Jake Dellhome and Brad Johnson all rode the pine or bounced around for a while before catching on. Not saying Bramlett will be as successful as those guys, but he could be. The coaches really liked him last year and I recall one of the big reasons he was released was to get him a better chance of starting.

You guys are going to go nuts over the next couple weeks without any new blog topics.
As far as a redskin note is concerned, Chris Cooley has requested questions for Jason Campbell (deadline, today @5pm) from his blogging site. He wants non-norm type questions. What do you guys think of Cc's site? I'm losing interest and don't know why, Cc is so cool to do this. I assume I don't have to show loyalty to WP for suggesting other blog sites.
