OTA Day 1 Roll Call (Updated)

The first of these two weeks of organized team activities is well underway. We haven't spotted these guys yet, which doesn't mean they're absent, but that we either haven't seen them or they aren't on the field yet: Rookie cornerback Kevin Barnes, Carlos Rogers, Clinton Portis, LaRon Landry, Mike Sellers, London Fletcher and James Thrash. Robert Thomas is present now.

Also, Randy Thomas is not working out and FB Eddie Williams was working out on the side of the field.

I don't think Portis is a surprise to anyone.... In fact, we should all be surprised if he does show up on time.

Paul Tenorio sounds SOOOO much better than Jason LaConfora.

Jason LaCanfora leaving the Post for NFL Network

That's right, Jason LaCanfora, the combative Redskins beat reporter for the Washington Post, is leaving his job at the newspaper and going to work for the NFL Network, where the man who loathed him the most -- Redskins owner Dan Snyder -- will be obliged to pay 1/32nd of his salary. [The NFL Network is owned by NFL owners.] LaCanfora is doing the right thing for himself, since talking about sports and news is currently a lot more financially rewarding that writing about it.

LaCanfora had a disputatious relationship with the Redskins management for years. GM/Butler Vinny Cerrato refused to talk to Cerrato and blasted him constantly on that godawful radio show he had on WTEM. Witless Redskins mouthpiece Larry Michaels had a brain-dead segment on his Redskins cable TV show devoted to mocking LaCanfora. However, LaCanfora frequently broke important stories and remained a tenacious chronicler of the Redskins doings and mis-doings. Perhaps LaCanfora should have been the bigger man and not responded to the insults from Redskins management, but he did -- often -- and it led some Redskins fans to regard LaCanfora as hostile to the team. [He wasn't, only hostile to the incompetent and hyper-sensitive team management.]

No doubt the Redskins and Post hope they can re-start their relationship and make it less antagonistic from now on. We'll see how long that lasts. Any person or media outlet that is properly critical of the dismal way the Redskins are run is going to earn the enmity of Dan Snyder and his various cronies. I hope Mr LaCanfora's replacement will be as probing and combative as he was.

Meanwhile, it's been a tough few months for the Post's sports section. They recently lost Wizards beat reporter Ivan Carter -- who had a pretty good relationship with the team -- to Comcast Sports, where he hosts Washington Post Live on TV. DC Pro Sports Report wishes Mr LaCanfora all the best in his new endeavor.

I think Mr Snyder had the offer from NFLN rescinded and LaCanfora is coming back to the Post

Posted by: redskins11 | June 1, 2009 12:06 PM | Report abuse

Without a doubt Larry Michael is the ultimate homer. I would bet, however, that 99.9% of the fans that frequent Redskins Insider, myself included, would kill to have his job and interaction with the franchise.

Sucking up to the owner and fawning over players who think you're a clown? If sports groupie is your idea of success then dare to dream jimmy.

I don't think they liked Jasno attempting to identify his successor as Jason Reid.

Is Sellers a holdout? I was under the impression he wanted a new contract?

Posted by: hobbes9 | June 1, 2009 12:10 PM | Report abuse

Note to Mike Sellers get your butt out there dude they arent going to "hold" your position

Posted by: BenchCampbell | June 1, 2009 12:12 PM | Report abuse

Owners are rather notorious for sticking together on certain things ... like the media. Its possible that Snyder had the NFLN go after JLA, just so the owners could blackball JLA and force him out of the league.

It wouldn't be the first time a person thought they were going up in the world, only to find that they'd been setup instead.

Who will JLC's replacement be? Of all the things he was or wasn't, he wasn't funny. There is however IMO another WaPo writer who is, Dave Sheinin. Unfortunately he covers baseball and the Nats so I guess he isn't a replacement candidate, but you can judge his comedic talent for yourself at:

http://voices.washingtonpost.com/baseball-insider/2009/06/three_up_three_down_8.html

It would improve RI a lot if JLC's replacement had a humorous side after JLC having spewed all his rancor and bile on the blog.

Rookie cornerback Kevin Barnes- Showed up at UMD by mistake or could not figure out how to get over to VA from MD.

Carlos Rogers, Clinton Portis, LaRon Landry, Mike Sellers- still at the club where Tana's party was.

London Fletcher and James Thrash- had an AARP meeting to got to.

Posted by: alex35332 | June 1, 2009 12:23 PM | Report abuse

Jason Reid is obviously the right guy.

If Kevin Barnes is a senior, then he wouldn't be allowed to attend OTAs until he graduates....

Everyone else is a is a gaurenteed starter. Thrash and LFB have seniority.

So what did JLC's post say anyway. Was it a good bye cruel world type post or what?

Posted by: alex35332 | June 1, 2009 11:39 AM

I would have paid more attention if I'd realized I was going to be one of about only eight people who read it.

The overall tone was warm and sentimental, going back to the first days of the blog and marveling about how it had exceeded what the expected of it. He mentioned having made lots of friends from the blog although he only mentioned three names -- Nate, PDiddy, and Jessica (?). He asked people to stay in touch with him at NFL.com and said he expected his e/m address to be jasno@NFL.com.

Lots of love for the Post and thanks to the people he had worked with, particularly, Cindy, but all the others at the Post who had mentored him. Expressed the hope that J. Reid would take over Redskins Insider.

I only caught one misspelling -- "ip" instead of "up" -- so maybe he didn't really write it.

He said that "talent_evaluator is the greatest, the Truth is a lie, and Barno can rot in hell." [Okay, I made that up, but I'm sure he was thinking it. You could kind of read it between the lines.]

Posted by: talent_evaluator | June 1, 2009 12:43 PM | Report abuse

Also, Cindy announced last year that Barry Svrluga will be on the Redskins beat.

That was everyone's sign last year that JLaC will be leaving as that was/is his successor....

JReid will be JReid. And Terino and Les Caepenter will be contributers.

If it was up to me, Maske would be headed back to the beat as he would become instantly credible on all fronts...

Posted by: MistaMoe | June 1, 2009 12:34 PM

Duh. Several guys beat Jansen out. Not enough have beaten Thrash ... yet.

I'm also thinking that Jansen was a pain to the coaches. Zorn has been wanting to get rid of him for a while and I'm guessing it has a lot to do with attitude, although given his play last season, maybe not.

Hmmm ... looks like the war between the Redskins FO and Jason La Canfora goes ever on. Snidely is a pretty vindictive guy ... extremely.

I believe that to be one of his greatest flaws because of its polarizing effect ... because its so extreme., and why he may never be a winner in this league. Its something he shares with the likes of Al Davis and Jerry Jones. Me thinks he may be worst than both.

Doesn't it make you long for the good old days when the immigration officers at Ellis Island converted their names to American? This guy would have been Barry Saver.

I shared an office once with a guy who'd emigrated from Armenia. Everytime he asked people to return his calls he had to spell his name for them. "B-R-O-U-S-S-A-L-L-I-A-N." Sometimes he had to spell it twice. As soon as he hung up he would say "I should have listened to that guy and changed it to Bruce."

I have had that injury and 3 knee surgeries later ... I'll tell you what how much are you willing to bet that he isn't on IR by the end of the year dude? Got a bridge in Brooklyn to sell you if you actually believe anything Snyder's Pollyanna Fitzgerald has to say. He often sounds like one of the "Moonies" who used to "help" run the Times.
