Other Names
My guess continues to be that this is headed to Jim Fassel, with a press conference as soon as Monday and some negotiating this weekend. That's my gut.
As far as reporting, spoke to Brian Billick for a few minutes this afternoon. Just figured I'd check in with some other possibilities in case the Redskins had a dark horse. Brian is still keeping a low profile after being released by the Ravens, and said that didn't really have "anything to share" with me when I asked about any interest from the Redskins.
He added: "I've been following it from afar and I don't really have any idea what direction they are going in," but would not respond directly to whether or not he had any contact from the Skins.
I came out of the conversation thinking he was not a covert candidate, but that was just my impression.
Also spoke to some people close to Marty Schottenhiemer, just in case, and while Marty does like Dan Snyder - they have become closer since his firing following the 2001 season - he would not be interested in this position given the front office structure and staff being already in place - and likewise the Redskins have not contacted him.
Have not checked on Dennis Green in the last week or so, but as of that time there had been no contact between the sides.
John Madden is happy in the MaddenCruiser and Jimmy Johnson enjoys his boat in Miami, thank you very much. Bill Cowher continues to have no thoughts whatsoever about coaching this season, two sources close to him said today, and Pete Carroll has been with his assistants and meeting with alumni in LA following the recuiting period and he too has no plans to leave USC.
Email me a name. Who am I missing?
Regardless, in the end I'm thinking Fassel, for now.

Just to repeat from the last blog ...
A week ago, Snyder HAD to know who the coach would be -- unless it was a guy who was coaching in the Super Bowl. So the one guy from the SB, Spags, isn't coming. We knew that 24 hrs ago, and Danny has known it longer than we have.
Danny's top choice should have known for the past 24 hours or if he was going to get an offer. Does it take that long to hammer out a contract and hold press conference?
NO!!!
Which means there is more going on here ...

I still say Danny's best move is to hire Cowher NOW and have him start in 2009. Let Blache or Buges be interim HC. That way Danny gets the guy he wants and a respected vet from within as HC.
Win Win -- only flaw -- doesf Cowher respect Danny enough to do it ...
Which brings me to JLa's question. Could it be an internal hire. Buges of Blache?

Does it matter who he hires? Because this time next year, Cowher will want to coach again and Dan will fire everyone and go after him. That was his plan all along, but since Gibbs left a year earlier than he thought, it has messed everything up. Whoever gets hired will be one and done unless we win the superbowl.

What about Snyder negotiating with Greg Blache to be the HC with Jerry Gray as the DC? I wouldn't be averse to that quite honestly.
If not, then reach out to Grimm and Singletary (proven leaders of men) and do a round of interviews with them and choose from Grimm, Singletary, and Meeks. At this point, give a shot to an assistant. As a fan, I would definitely pull for a 1st timer.
If Snyder must choose a retread, then let it be Mariucci. I like his style and personality. He would engage the players very well.

Charlie's Friend: "So who's in this Pentavarate?"

AS THEIR HEADCOACH, THE REDSKINS WILL HIRE..........................
Hector Elizondo
The way 'ol Coach Gennero brought out the best in his Texas State University Fightin' Armadillos in "Necessary Roughness" proves that Hector has what it takes to succeed at this level. He'll even bring in Robert Loggia as assistant-headcoach.
In the coming weeks look for Coach Gennero to also bring in Scott Bakula, Kathy Ireland, Sinbad, and Jason Bateman. Word has it that Fred Thompson will also be brought in, in some sort of front-office position.
Go 'Skins.

Regarding free agents, haven't really followed who is out there, I'd steer clear of Faneca, too old, and will be too expensive, same with Samuel, too expensive. Someone mentioned Antwan Odom, but I don't know enough about him.
On drafting, I think the Redskins need to go with some young blood on both sides of the lines.

Unbelieveable!
Things that suck really bad:
-this process
-Dan Synder
-His buttkissing lackey (Vinny Cerrato)
-Hiring Fossil
-Hiring anyone who will now take this job
-The Redskins next season
Once upon a time, the Redskins were a storied franchise that was the envy of the entire NFL. It had great coaches, championships, great players and prospects (see Green, Monk, etc.), free agents who became great (see Wilbur Marshall, Riggins, and Theismann), and was the most desirable job for any potential head coach.
Then came Napolean Synder, the midget king. I'm sure everyone has heard of the midas touch, but this is a bit different, it's the Snyder touch (and it makes everything turn to poop).
Now top free agents don't want to play here (see Randy Moss, TO, anyone who can play QB), the ones who do stink (see Brandon Llyod and Adam Archeletta), except for those who are looking to get some of the midget king's loot (see Dion, Bruce Smith, Jeff George, Laverneas Coles). Anyone who is a halfway decent coach take themselves out of the coaching search (see Gregg Williams, Jim Mora, Spags).
This is really a hopeless situation. We will have to settle for coaches who can't even cut it as coordinators (see Fossil).
The only thing that could possible salvage this situation is if the Midget King hires Meeks or pulls a rabbit out of the hat (in the form of Pete Carroll or someone like that).
God help the Redskins and their fans, the midget king certainly wont.

Both Mariucci and Fassel are only 5 games over .500
http://www.pro-football-reference.com/coaches/FassJi0.htm
http://www.pro-football-reference.com/coaches/MariSt0.htm
The obvious problem with Billick though is his inability to get the Baltimore offense to produce at a high level. And he has not been stellar in molding and growing QBs.
But nonetheless, he has the best record amongst the retreads.

Yes - unless you clear it with Arizona. You have to ask them and, basically, they have to so yes if it is to be a HC. All of the reporting by everyone says no one at Arizona was ever asked for permission to speak with Grimm, which means they CANNOT speak with him about the HC job. But all it would take is a phone call to the GM out there and the GM would have to say yes. Seems silly I know, but that is the rule. So if they ever reach out to Grimm it will probably get out pretty quickly.

Gibbs provided the most stability since Norv Turner, except he was actually getting to playoffs.
No, Snyder turns away the obvious successor to pick someone a) unproven or b) unemployed. How's that supposed to be better than giving Williams a shot?
It's kind of nice that he's keeping continuity in the staff, but it's a catch-22 because he's keeping continuity in Gregg Williams staff. Most self-respecting coaches will want to hire their own staff.

Go 'Skins.

I think your scenario is more likely, but what if Fassel knows that it was really between him and Spags. Now that Spags is out of the picture, Fassel can try and leverage for more money, years, etc, because he know that Snyder really doesn't want to hire anyone else. I don't think it is most likely the case, I'm just trying to figure out why it is taking so long when they had plenty of time to hammer out contract details and they already have Fassel's favored coaches in place.

I have the answer for the new head coach of the Redskins - my new, and now forever, number one candidate. He is currently a Head Coach/Manager, and has a lifetime winning record (I think). PLUS - he retired as a Redskin, won a SB with them, and set a then SB record while doing it. He retired at the top of this game.
I give you the new HC of the Washington Redskins . . .
wait for it

I'm kind of hoping that gregf shows up before next season's games vs. the Giants. The opposition bloggers from the NYG were fairly weak last year. I don't think he appreciates the rawness of the blog right now ... like no amount of Tucks medicated pads is going to make this feel better for a while.
If Fassel IS the guy, I really hope he has a thick skin re: the fanbase. Like I really hope he doesn't try to win over the fans by going undefeated in the preseason.
Posted by: dcsween | February 8, 2008 5:39 PM | Report abuse
curtmcgurt, I think Snyder kind of likes Fassel, but he's afraid to commit.
Fassel is basically Snyder's booty call, but he's still on the prowl for someone he can establish something long term with.
I think Fassel knows even if he signs on, Snyder will have wandering eyes. I agree with you that Fassel might ask for more years, more money, etc, to at least get the appearance of security.
If Fassel gets hired, it will be interesting to see how the players respond to him. They've got to see reluctance on display here. If the players don't like him, they can definitely play a role in getting him fired quickly--kinda like the Giants did when he was there.

NFL Network's Adam Schefter reports that Osi Umenyiora may hold out this summer if he doesn't get a new contract. Umenyiora signed a six-year deal only two years ago, but now feels underpaid compared to teammate Justin Tuck. The Giants may be hesitant to re-do his deal, so a staredown could ensue. Plaxico Burress and Chris Snee are two other Giants likely to seek more money. A separate report came out Thursday that Osi could miss the Pro Bowl because of the flu, with Michael Strahan replacing him. Feb. 7 - 6:25 pm et

They need to hire Mike Sigeltary, he is in the Hall of Fame and he is a good coach, the players would respect him.
Russ Grim would be good too.
As far as George Allen Jr goes, it wouldn't work. He would slip up and say some racial slurs, the players wouldn't be cool with this, 90% of the team is black. I also don't think they would be cool with the confederate flag with a noose hanging on it in his office. Could you imagine some of the players reaction when they saw this.

Free Agents? First of all..these players mentioned did not play in the FA era.
Secondly, Marshall was traded to the Skins, JT was a skin all along (third string QB behind billy and sonny) and riggins was traded to the Skins from the jets. So where did get Free agent from?
Posted by: leevi98 | February 8, 2008 7:09 PM | Report abuse
of course JT was drafted by the Dolphins and then decided to go play in The canadian league ...so when he came back to the NFL I suppose you could call him a FA but not in the same terms as you referred.

I tend to agree with folks that if it was really going to be fassell they would have a deal already. If you ask me, something else is at work here, and given the fact that the high profile guys all have said they are not interested I think it will either be Grimm or Bugel.
On Bugel, he has been a coach before and remember that before Saunders got here he was the #2 guy on the offensive side and defacto head coach, not to mention he did a heck of a job with the O-Line. So, in my opinion if we are going to go with a guy in his second time around as a head coach at this point...
Why not Joe Bugel?

Can't believe how long this agonizing process has gone on and still no HC. Way to go, Danny Boy. Bottom line is: No one wants the job in your organization even if you throw all kinds of $$ at them. As its been pointed out, you've been used by several coordinators to get better deals in their current gigs.
If Sonny were younger, I think he would be an interesting choice. How about talking Vermeil into another stint as a HC? Of Jim Johnson on Andy Reid's staff? At this point, just hire someone!

Isn't Bill Callahan available? He seems like a great choice.
How about Gene Hackman? He's tough and has movie-coaching experience. That counts for a lot when your team is run by Scientologists.

Everyone is missing the point here. Since Gibbs has left, the Skins have had a better record than any coach Danny has hired (with the exception of being tied with Marty)! We haven't lost one game since Gibbs left. I think this shows we don't need a head coach...we're doing as well without one as we've done since baby boy bought his toy.
We may need to get used to this...who in their right mind would sign on to a newly contracted staff of coordinators, with a guy like Vinny at the helm, $16 million over the cap (only one other team, the Ravens, are even over the cap), and having to deal with baby boy?!?!?!
I am sorry to say, but until Danny catches on with how to run a succesful business, hiring great people and simply supporting them so they can do their job...we're f'd!

I am NOT renewing my season tickets. Even tho they shove commercials down my throat, I have supported the team. This is a debacle. Once Dan Snyder sells the team, I will once again be happy sitting 85 stories high, and a half mile away from the game. And then, and only then, will I cheer when those needy people in section 103 win KFC buckets....

Here is what I predict:
Since many of the candidates have dropped out, on Monday, Snyder will give the whole staff the titles Head Coach-Defensive Backs, Head Coach-Defensive Line, Head Coach-Linebackers, etc. That way he can hire Bill Cowher next year without having to fire some washed-up retread.

Synder is drawn to her ability to sell tickets.
He needs to wait until she is down wih her tour to negotiate, so that is the delay

Leevi button-fly,
Just for the sake of accuracy, Wilbur Marshall was gotten via free agency although under the rulz of the time we than had to give up picks...
But your right on Theismen and Riggins they were not gotten via FA.

You are correct but it was still a trade so to speak...Marshall was still under contract to the bears hence the compensation picks...so either or...my point was to the guys post was that he was not a Free Agent. He saying he was signed as a free Agent and that was not the case.

Here's a little scenario for everyone to consider...what if the reason why no one has been hired and we don't seem to be traveling anywhere to pick up or interview a possible canidate is because Dan has decided to interview Greg Blache for the head coaching position. Blache is the only person who could energize the fan base, coaching staff, players as well as pleasing the NFL and by making a minority hire. Regardless of race I believe Blache would be a great hire, people forget that GB was a very successful d-coordinator for the Bears before he joined the skins. He gave the Bears a top 10 d for 4-5 years and is credited with the development of Brian Urlacher. I want anyone but Fassel, he couldn't get the job done in Baltimore and wasn't hired by the Chiefs when he interviewed for their offensive coordinator position...no way we can hire a guy with that type of recent history as our head coach. Blache just makes the most sense to me even if its not likely. I know the players have great respect for him and would definitely run through walls for him..lets hope Dan comes to his senses and hires Blache or someone other than Fassel.

There are quite a few that have not been interviewed, Mora SR., Dan Reeves, Madden(BOOM), My favorite though would have to be Jerry Jones. He was one funny man.
Posted by: VRIEL1 | February 9, 2008 1:22 AM | Report abuse
I thought Fassel was the man.
Marty Mornhinweg might be OK but again he has a future so will not be coming to the redskins. Even that moron Danny knows he will just use him for a big payday from a real team.
Lane Kiffen could be the hold up. Al Davis like most old farts lost track of inflation in 1976 so can't part with much money. He can't bare to dump Kiffen and pay out is contract so Dan is trying to get him. Kiffen has no future so why not come here and get a raise.
Redskins = Brothel
Come to my house of love and get a raise.

Also some people on the blog who will remain nameless, gave VinnyDan a lot of slack on the HC search the last few weeks. Soma Yall, Even came up with some retarded theories on why getting the coaching staff before the HC was part of the plan.
You NEED to apologies to this blog for doing work, DAN should have to pay for.

It looks like we have been relegated to Fassel as our next coach. Articles are now appearing on various websites explaining why Fassel makes sense for the Skins and why Skins fans should accept him. Seems like our FO has an Information Operation in effect over the weekend to build for the presser for Fassel on MON.
Posted by: RedskinsReverend | February 9, 2008 5:22 AM | Report abuse
The "non decision" yesterday appears to have been an intentional "non announcement" of the Fassel choice so Skins fans use the weekend to get over losing Spags and become complacent about accepting Fassel as the next HC. Expect more information in the media about why Fassel makes sense for the Skins throughout today and in print tomorrow. This is the strategic spin to generate acceptance.

The course of action that is beginning to get some traction as an alternative to Fassel is to bump Zorn to HC. This makes some sense. It appears he was fired to establish a version of the WCO in DC. The WCO would actually fit the Skins well. Many reports are that Fassel endorsed ZOrn, but Fassel has little history with the WCO personally, so what value added is he to a HC move largely focused on integrating a new offensive scheme. Some would argue that Fassel's been a HC and Zorn only a position coach. Fassel's record as a HC and OC does not end well though. QB and QB coach are dynamic positions of leadership on any NFL team, so Zorn possesses more leadership experience in fact than on paper. Fassel has a past title, but his experience is a minus and his value-added to a WCO initiative w/ the Skins is unapparent. Zorn is a rising star whose leadership experience is under rated, but whose value added to the WCO plan is what the FO is already banking the Skins future on. The Skins should alter their plan to use the weekend to build acceptance of Fassel and hire the man as HC that they're already invested in for the Skins' success; Jim Zorn.

The Information Operation to hire Fassel has won over Chris Mortenson on ESPN who was flat out making the case for Fassel as the logical choice on NFL Live. Again, the FO is using the weekend strategically to prep for the Fassel announcement on MON and did not go ahead yesterday so fans had the weekend to get over and forget Spags.
Mark Schlereth made it a point that from a player's perspective the length of the search and the process employed has undermined the "buy in" the players will have in the new HC's credibility. Even if its wrong, the impression is that Fassel is Snyder's "fail safe" candidate. Players will not follow the "fail safe." Unless Snyder is not using the weekend for his Fassel information campaign and making one last attempt to give the moon to Cowher, he should make the move to shift Zorn from OC to HC. Predicition is players and fans will more readily commit to that selection and the integration of the WCO w/ the Skins will be smoother without Fassel's inexperience with it muddying the process.

I really dislike the idea of Fassel. I would be leaning towards Billick or Mariucci. Just when we all thought Snyder had learned to respect our Redskins as a class act organization (by bringing back Gibbs) he goes back to his old ways. And now he's worse with this Little Hitler Cerruto. Snyder is supposed to be a fan's dream owner. I mean, he isn't cheap, he wants to win, etc, etc. But when it comes to football - he's (as Tom Cruise would say, "Glib"). Bring in Mariucci.

what difference does it make on who is named Head coach? In a couple of years when Mariucci/Meeks/Fassel/Shottenheimer/Billick/Buges/etcetc.. have a record of 6-18 and is fired, we'll be in the same position. Thank goodness, the Nationals report on the 15th.
