"Our 12th Man"

There are three dudes in Cooley jerseys in the front row of the stadium, right behind the Skins bench, with a huge sign that has Sean Taylor on it. Above the picture of Sean, who is turned with his back facing and number showing, are the words: "Our 12th Man"
A bunch of players were pointing to the guys after the anthem.

Posted by: squashmo | January 5, 2008 4:34 PM | Report abuse

whew, first down.

Posted by: suzannepdc | January 5, 2008 4:49 PM | Report abuse

running game not looking good early for the skins

Posted by: hailbg | January 5, 2008 4:52 PM | Report abuse

Is there a break in the clouds, or are they piping in sunlight too.

Come on you Skins, bring it to Big D!

Posted by: SMACK1 | January 5, 2008 4:53 PM | Report abuse

big hit on the ref

Posted by: sherryz710 | January 5, 2008 4:54 PM | Report abuse

seattle has a really quick front seven.

i dont think the reverse was a good call against that type of speed

i like what they were doing on 3rd and 1. everyone knew they were gonna run left and they were trying to smashmouth their way in there, but just weren't able to get it done

Posted by: hailbg | January 5, 2008 4:55 PM | Report abuse

We just need to hold them here - AGH!

Posted by: suzannepdc | January 5, 2008 4:58 PM | Report abuse

now I am going to throw up.

Posted by: RedBee | January 5, 2008 5:03 PM | Report abuse

Two decent defensive plays so far - one missed throw by Hasselback, but other than that, we have not even slowed them down. Does not bode well.

Posted by: RedBee | January 5, 2008 5:04 PM | Report abuse

skins gotta drive here.

any points would be great

Posted by: hailbg | January 5, 2008 5:05 PM | Report abuse

I am so afraid that Todd is going to throw his first INT soon!! TOO NERVOUS!

I am so afraid that Todd is going to throw his first INT soon!! TOO NERVOUS!

Posted by: suzannepdc | January 5, 2008 5:07 PM | Report abuse

so far, this is a mismatch...

skins better find a way to get in the game, very soon.

Posted by: gdennie | January 5, 2008 5:08 PM | Report abuse

That was a cheap shot on The Todd. That ought to get everyone fired up.

Posted by: SMACK1 | January 5, 2008 5:09 PM | Report abuse

seahawks are forcing collins to beat them by putting 8 in the box and matching up on single coverage on the outside

kind of how the skins have played the past 4 games :)

Posted by: hailbg | January 5, 2008 5:10 PM | Report abuse

Finally stopped the run! Let's go D - 3rd and long.

Posted by: suzannepdc | January 5, 2008 5:15 PM | Report abuse

Its early, but seattle looks alot quicker and more aggressive.

Skins look totally reactive.

Given Seattle's unimpressive record, I am surprised how well Seattle is playing.

Posted by: gdennie | January 5, 2008 5:16 PM | Report abuse

i hope the skins stick with a run.

they can wear down a small seattle front seven late in the game

Posted by: hailbg | January 5, 2008 5:22 PM | Report abuse

Isn't that a forward pass?

Can they give Heyer some help please?

Posted by: suzannepdc | January 5, 2008 5:23 PM | Report abuse

Guess I should be an official, huh? :)

Posted by: suzannepdc | January 5, 2008 5:25 PM | Report abuse

The WR's are victimizing Collins just like they did Campbell early in the year. These guys need to step their game up..It's the playoffs for cryin out loud.

Posted by: ga8085 | January 5, 2008 5:25 PM | Report abuse

Blown call.

Posted by: gdennie | January 5, 2008 5:26 PM | Report abuse

ARE!!!

Posted by: ga8085 | January 5, 2008 5:26 PM | Report abuse

The defense needs to have a big play, cause the offense and special teams is looking mighty ugly right now.

Posted by: ga8085 | January 5, 2008 5:31 PM | Report abuse

WE NEED A TURNOVER!!!

Posted by: suzannepdc | January 5, 2008 5:31 PM | Report abuse

Damn, am I the only one here?

Posted by: ga8085 | January 5, 2008 5:32 PM | Report abuse

anyone else see portis limp off the field. the dude is just not ballin' right now

Posted by: hailbg | January 5, 2008 5:33 PM | Report abuse

ga8085,

I think the rest of us are too stunned to say anything.

Posted by: JustMe | January 5, 2008 5:34 PM | Report abuse

ehh we just need to get to halftime so the coaches can make adjustments for the protection. both cooley and moss have dropped drive-changing passes.

gonna be tough to pull this one out.

Posted by: student1234 | January 5, 2008 5:35 PM | Report abuse

I had a really good feeling during our last drive, until it sputtered out...at least we held them to 3 here - just got give The Todd some protection - he has been knocked/hurried like 8 times already - he looks fine when there isn't someone in his face. The throw to Moss would have been there if he hadn't been hit when he threw it - hopefully we'll get a good return.

Posted by: suzannepdc | January 5, 2008 5:38 PM | Report abuse

ga8085,

I think the rest of us are too stunned to say anything.

Posted by: JustMe | January 5, 2008 05:34 PM

Oh, okay. Yeah, it's not looking good right now.

Posted by: ga8085 | January 5, 2008 5:38 PM | Report abuse

the offense has horrible field position on two of their four drives.

we need a big play here. you can methodically drive 95 or 98 yards against a quick defense like seattle.

no worries, if we're still down by one score at the half, we're in the game

Posted by: hailbg | January 5, 2008 5:38 PM | Report abuse

Okay boys, let's go! Smashmouth football.

Posted by: suzannepdc | January 5, 2008 5:40 PM | Report abuse

It's about freakin time they got good field position. Let's get a TD!!

Posted by: ga8085 | January 5, 2008 5:50 PM | Report abuse

gotta get points here. the offensive line has got to protect better

Posted by: hailbg | January 5, 2008 5:50 PM | Report abuse

We need a score here...
Go Skins!

Posted by: goskins21 | January 5, 2008 5:52 PM | Report abuse

This drive is huge.

Posted by: TheCindy | January 5, 2008 5:53 PM | Report abuse

Ahhhhhhhhh! Todd Collins can't get a break!

Posted by: goskins21 | January 5, 2008 5:54 PM | Report abuse

Can someone please protect The Todd, please?

Posted by: suzannepdc | January 5, 2008 5:54 PM | Report abuse

Why would you pass the ball three straight times when your O Line hasn't been able to pass protect? WTF!!

Posted by: ga8085 | January 5, 2008 5:54 PM | Report abuse

The D has settled down now the offense needs something..anything.

Posted by: ga8085 | January 5, 2008 5:57 PM | Report abuse

The defense held. We need to score! Go Skins!

Posted by: goskins21 | January 5, 2008 5:57 PM | Report abuse

the skins look better going no huddle...maybe a second half adjustment to go no huddle the entire second half?

Posted by: hailbg | January 5, 2008 6:00 PM | Report abuse

Okay, we gotta score here and we'll be okay going into the half.

Posted by: suzannepdc | January 5, 2008 6:00 PM | Report abuse

What the F was that Norv Turner?

Posted by: suzannepdc | January 5, 2008 6:02 PM | Report abuse

The bad coaching fairy is back.

Posted by: gdennie | January 5, 2008 6:04 PM | Report abuse

Horrible spot!!

Posted by: ga8085 | January 5, 2008 6:04 PM | Report abuse

gibby is going to have to kill another player to win this game?

Posted by: needanotherkill | January 5, 2008 6:06 PM | Report abuse

Arrrrrghhhhh! We can't get anything going. Let's regroup after the half. Go Skins!

Posted by: goskins21 | January 5, 2008 6:06 PM | Report abuse

skins look better out of shotgun because taylor got killed by one and they want to honor him by playing hard in shotgun formation.

Posted by: needanotherkill | January 5, 2008 6:09 PM | Report abuse

You still need talent to win in the nfl consistently which the suckass skins have none.

Posted by: needanotherkill | January 5, 2008 6:11 PM | Report abuse

So do I switch jerseys - Darrell Green to Monk to try to switch the luck in my apt?

Posted by: suzannepdc | January 5, 2008 6:12 PM | Report abuse

looks like beeing a long day?

Posted by: Diddytut | January 5, 2008 6:15 PM | Report abuse

we're playing ok defensively, but we have to get a big play offensively.

and we have to be able to run the ball consistently. also, look for better field position

that was a bad half, but we're only down by 10. a quick score early in the second half changes the game, but our d has to keep up the good work to start the second half

Posted by: hailbg | January 5, 2008 6:15 PM | Report abuse

Terrible offensive first half, some bad breaks, and a couple of bad spots but they are still only down by 10. Game is still in their grasp if they can get the offense moving in the second half.

Posted by: mbearden | January 5, 2008 6:17 PM | Report abuse

Got to give the 'Hawks their due. Their defense has pretty much had their way with our offense. Too bad we gave up that TD early. One more TD will do it for Seattle if we don't score after a quick 3 and out be Seattle.

Posted by: Riggins | January 5, 2008 6:17 PM | Report abuse

Just feel like ONE big play is on the way !!!! But we HAVE HAVE HAVE HAVE to stop them on the 1st drive of the 2nd half

Posted by: cej75024 | January 5, 2008 6:18 PM | Report abuse

Dag gone it !!!! If Todd had been able to hit Santana on the big bomb...this would be a WHOLE lot different !

Posted by: cej75024 | January 5, 2008 6:20 PM | Report abuse

I've switched to Art Monk - so if we win and turn things around, I will take full credit! :)

I agree CEJ - I think we are one nice open pass to Moss away from being back into this - the D finally started looking good at the end - need Springs to get a good INT and Cooley to finally catch something.

Posted by: suzannepdc | January 5, 2008 6:21 PM | Report abuse

the skins play better with their backs against the wall. for some reason, they didn't come out and play as physical as expected.

i just hope a half is long enough to get back

Posted by: hailbg | January 5, 2008 6:24 PM | Report abuse

Well, we'll have to see what the halftime adjustments are... we could've played a bit better, but the seahawks could say the same thing.

Posted by: daggar | January 5, 2008 6:24 PM | Report abuse

Defense held, again. They're keeping us in the game. Go Skins!

Posted by: goskins21 | January 5, 2008 6:29 PM | Report abuse

Has ARE run any of the punts back?

Posted by: suzannepdc | January 5, 2008 6:30 PM | Report abuse

1st down ARE! He's catching the ball!

Posted by: goskins21 | January 5, 2008 6:33 PM | Report abuse

The defense has to come up with a turnover. We can't get anything going on offense.

Posted by: goskins21 | January 5, 2008 6:37 PM | Report abuse

Suddenly, it all became clear. Tom Cruise is in the house.

Posted by: TheCindy | January 5, 2008 6:38 PM | Report abuse

On another note, remember how Dan Snyder bought Dick Clark Productions? Well, the Golden Globes is a DCP. And there's going to be diminished star power because the Screen Actors Guild has told its members not to cross the writers' picket line.
Back to football.

Posted by: TheCindy | January 5, 2008 6:40 PM | Report abuse

This is a loss plain and simple. The team had their horm tooted all week long and I guess it went to their heads.

Posted by: lilagram | January 5, 2008 6:42 PM | Report abuse

Wow, the D line is getting NO pressure on Hasselbach.

Posted by: ga8085 | January 5, 2008 6:42 PM | Report abuse

CP 14 rushes 36 yds.

Posted by: gdennie | January 5, 2008 6:43 PM | Report abuse

All right. I am logging on for some luck. Ithought if we go down 17-0 we were done. We are still in this. Let's go offense!

Posted by: dlhaze | January 5, 2008 6:44 PM | Report abuse

nothing has looked good for the skins. i dont see how they can methodically march against the seahawks and win.

there's gotta be a big play. kickoff return for a td? interception? huge bomb from collins to moss?

Posted by: hailbg | January 5, 2008 6:45 PM | Report abuse

Damn refs

Posted by: dlhaze | January 5, 2008 6:45 PM | Report abuse

Mna, they can't do anythng right. Penalties, no blocking, and no scoring. WOW!

Posted by: lilagram | January 5, 2008 6:45 PM | Report abuse

man, when it rains...

Come on - 21 unanswered points - starting this drive!

Posted by: suzannepdc | January 5, 2008 6:46 PM | Report abuse

We need pete kendall to start blocking somebody......
also, we need ARE or Moss to just make someone miss and we are right back in this!

Posted by: dlhaze | January 5, 2008 6:47 PM | Report abuse

K. Campbell clips (see your Tivo) and then jaws.

Where is the composure?

Posted by: gdennie | January 5, 2008 6:47 PM | Report abuse

3 and out!

Posted by: lilagram | January 5, 2008 6:48 PM | Report abuse

anyone thinking back to two big brunell bombs to beat the cowboys a couple of years back 14-13?

Posted by: hailbg | January 5, 2008 6:48 PM | Report abuse

So who looks good in the draft?

Posted by: lilagram | January 5, 2008 6:49 PM | Report abuse

anyone thinking back to two big brunell bombs to beat the cowboys a couple of years back 14-13?

suzannepdc, im chalking this up to the change of jerseys :)

Posted by: hailbg | January 5, 2008 7:13 PM | Report abuse

I am confused. I thought the kicking team could advance the ball on a recovered kick? Can anyone clarify the rule. TIA.

Posted by: kevinballen | January 5, 2008 7:13 PM | Report abuse

I swear this is a completely different team than I saw play six weeks ago. The team back then would have already rolled over and died.

Just keep grinding it out, guys. Grind it right at 'em.

Posted by: JimmieBise | January 5, 2008 7:14 PM | Report abuse

kevinballen - So far as I know, you can't advance a kickoff unless it's touched by the other team first.

Posted by: JimmieBise | January 5, 2008 7:15 PM | Report abuse

was that really no good?

Posted by: dlhaze | January 5, 2008 7:15 PM | Report abuse

I just told my sister the same thing! :)

Posted by: suzannepdc | January 5, 2008 7:15 PM | Report abuse

Okay, enough with these damn passes up the middle - we need another turnover or to stop them!

Posted by: suzannepdc | January 5, 2008 7:17 PM | Report abuse

The sad thing is that all those effin tools in the stands think they are responsible for the miss.....

Posted by: dlhaze | January 5, 2008 7:17 PM | Report abuse

Let's get another PICK!

Posted by: dlhaze | January 5, 2008 7:22 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: suzannepdc | January 5, 2008 7:24 PM | Report abuse

Damnit! Okay, we can take it down and answer it!

Posted by: suzannepdc | January 5, 2008 7:26 PM | Report abuse

It's up to the offense, now. Go Skins!

Posted by: ga8085 | January 5, 2008 7:31 PM | Report abuse

I KNEW that he had to throw a INT sooner or later - damn!

I really don't want to hear Gibbs talk about how hard they fought - I want to hear talk about how we won!

Damn, damn, damn!

Posted by: suzannepdc | January 5, 2008 7:34 PM | Report abuse

The missed field goal was the turning point!

Posted by: goskins21 | January 5, 2008 7:34 PM | Report abuse

This game ain't over

Posted by: mvdame | January 5, 2008 7:39 PM | Report abuse

I am trying to keep the faith, just don't know if we have enough time! Collins can throw it - but can Moss, ARE, etc. catch it?

Posted by: dlhaze | January 5, 2008 7:41 PM | Report abuse

We let this one go.....

Posted by: goskins21 | January 5, 2008 7:42 PM | Report abuse

Done now...pathetic finish. Field goal would have turned the corner...season done and sealed.

Good run....but when said and done...bad year...path old coach...and another bad year next year because Gibbs won't retire. We will be 8-8 next year..

Posted by: rcmckissick | January 5, 2008 7:43 PM | Report abuse

6th seeds who back into playoffs and lose are what is known as ONE AND DONE!

Posted by: FATLADYSINGS | January 5, 2008 7:43 PM | Report abuse

That's a shame. They clawed all the way back and took the lead. The missed FG was an absolute killer. Makes me sick...

Posted by: ga8085 | January 5, 2008 7:44 PM | Report abuse

Dammit. :(

Posted by: JimmieBise | January 5, 2008 7:44 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: demonj21 | January 5, 2008 7:45 PM | Report abuse

The Skins gave me a lot more than I could have asked for this year. I would rather root for a losing team with great character than a winning team with a bunch of punks.

Congratulations to the team and our fans for a great year. 5 weeks ago I was thinking how bad the team would be next year but so many of our young guys stepped up....I can't wait for the draft so we can get a stud DE to complement Carter.

Hail.

Posted by: isnadd | January 5, 2008 7:45 PM | Report abuse

To all of you who criticized me for worrying, what are you saying now????

Anyway, this really hurts but I still love the team and I'm proud of what they accomplished this season.

Posted by: Lisa_R | January 5, 2008 7:46 PM | Report abuse

Next year improve D and O line and they're back in the playoffs (barring a lot of injuries)

Posted by: ga8085 | January 5, 2008 7:46 PM | Report abuse

The only thing this pathetic redskinette team is guaranteed is a worse draft pick and a guarantee of few changes because of the idiots who think this was a good run?? Kill a player and win 4 straight and you had a good run? Dannyboy will kill 3 next year!

If we ever have a coach again that want to score and use the pass first (which is what all the good teams do in this age of football)...we have good players. But, with Gibbs...run first with a fair to poor offensive line...toast...and bad times again. Sad to end here...

Hats off (or is that feathers off?)to the Seahawks; they were the better team today.
Don't be too hard on the team, kids. Four weeks ago the playoffs were a pipe dream. We just have to learn to win one or two more games so that we have a home playoff game.

Now I can get back to the rest of my life until next September. Rest in peace, Sean. We sure could've used you today. Goodbye and good luck to all in Redskin Nation.

first off, not getting the TD after the botched kickoff was bad.
after that, missing the FG was killer.

Posted by: jwlemons | January 5, 2008 7:55 PM | Report abuse

Gibbs isn't going anywhere and next season will all depend on how much watching Collins run this offense the right way will help Jason Campbell next year.

The defense will probably be worse, starting the season without Taylor, McIntosh and Rogers, since attrition is sure to bring down a few other starters as well.

Sad end to a nice run.

By the way, I don't buy that we backed into the playoffs. We won every game down the stretch, we did not lose and hope someone else would lose.

Kicker
3 defensive line: 2 pass rusher and one DT
1 Line backer
3 corner backs -- Sean Spring can play safety
4 offense lines -- 2 vet from free agency and 2 rookis -- Good bye Jansen
1 star wide receiver

All of this equal superbowl!

Resign Collin - let Brunell go!

If I am missing anything please feel free to add.

WOW. Can anyone recall a game with such violent momentum swings? Seahawks are in complete control, Redskins take the lead in a couple minutes and are about to extend it, Seahawks end up winning by 3 TDs. All in ONE QUARTER!!

We needed to punch in the TD after recovering the kickoff. I knew it was over after we failed to score.

Defense was very good. Offense was inept in the first half, solid for a 10 minute span, and then utterly collapsed in the end(what in the world happened on that first pick 6??)

We need O and D line help. A big receiver would be nice, too.

Sorry.. but you ar so full of 'it your eyes are brown. As a fitting example of Gibb's reign and inability to pick players, Moss gives up on a route, the pass is intercepted, and returned for a TD. Go Gibbs!. Just go!! This team will never do anything.

I am am asked how I could be like this. I have LOVED the Skins since I was a kid growing up in Charlottesville (maybe there're is a kindrance with the incompetant Groh and Gibbs).

I love the Skins, but hate what they have become under Snyder and Gibbs.

1) I have never been prouder of any team in all my years rooting for the Skins, Terps, and Wiz/Bullets

2) Seattle Seahawks fans are without a doubt the most classless fans I have ever come across. Cannot count how many times they shouted things like "Sean Taylor is a f*ggot" and worse. I got kicked out of the Fx McRory's bar across from the stadium before the game for standing up to one of these punks. Most. Classless. Fans. Ever.

Turning point?

For me, it was we recover the kick off leading 14-13.

On first down TC threw a bit low to Cooley who almost came up with it.
It would have been first and goal at about the 4, leading 14-13.
Suisham then missed the 30 yd. FG

Downhill from there folks...

I'm sad, but I'm also VERY proud of this team and its performance this season.

We'll be better next season when we get Jansen & Thomas back.

And LaRon was huge today; way to step up, big fella.

Question: Can anyone explain to me why Anthony Mix's recovery of the kickoff is NOT a TD?

That must be a fairly new rule change, because when I first started watching the NFL in '77, I believe you could advance any kickoff once it went 10 yards.

Evaluations:
Good-
ARE had ten receptions today.
LL keeps improving
Chris Wilson improving
Reed Doughty improving
Leigh Torrence played aggressively [I like seeing that]
Kick returns consistently pretty good
Rock Cartwright ran very hard.

Disappointing-
OL provided no surge for a running game
OL not sorry pass protection today for TC.
Mike Sellers: missing too many blocks as FB; very disappointing.
Skins entirely too many short yardage situations and running game was miserable.
DL not provide enough pass rush; only a few times did they seem to harass Hasselback.

Tough loss. Lack of quality on the oline was the fundamental difference, but you have to play with the players you have, not the players you'd like to have.
Still pretty magical second half, touchdown-turnover-touchdown-kick recovery almost makes you believe in miracles.
But the pressure TC was under was the difference in the end. TC got drilled on the first INT, looked like he panicked a bit on the second.

Packers have no chance Suzanne....sorry...NFC is toast. Jacksonville may be the only team that can physically beat up on the Pats. We beat Dallas...by emotion...but by the margin we did because they really did not have to play to win. Yes...we beat their starters for a half...but when it's all said and done they will be playing a week from now.

Skins are a good team...but will never be great with Gibbs again...waiting game...like having to wait for Bush to get out of office...we have to wait for Gibbs to finally retire once and for all...in 09 I guess.

Love the skins...but they really don't have clue how to play with the talent they have..

Been traveling over the last month and could not watch all the games. Incredible run to get into the playoffs. But this team was not ready today to play a single elimination playoff game on the road. Could be many reasons. Maybe it's unreasonable to believe that there was enough left in the tank after the tumultuous season and the loss of 6 starters. Collins played lights out until today when he faced a fierce pass rush. The 2 INTs are a bit misleading - Moss inexcusably gave up on his route and the second was a garbage time toss. As bad as Gibbs was calling the consecutive timeouts in the Buffalo game, Moss pulling this stunt in a playoff game was even more egregious. The O line was horrendous the first half. The D did about as well as it could with its personnel. This game was there for the taking if the Skins had been able to show up for the first half or just capitalize on the kickoff recovery in the second half - get at least the FG there. But when we came up empty, Seattle never looked back. Momentum changed permanently. It was a great ride but it's over now and it does not hide the significant issues the organization needs to face in the offseason. What a bitter way for it all to end.

Seriously, what must these guys like Portis and Moss be thinking when they've been saying for 5 weeks that they were a team of destiny? How do you explain going out there and playing like poop?

Again, they lost by exactly 21 points--how can you explain that? Portis and co. made such a big deal out of winning by 21 last week.

Think I am just a sucker for Bret Favre and I cannot root for Dallas and I don't think the Giants or Tampa stands a chance against anyone in the AFC.

J'ville just ran back a kickoff to the 1 - game now tied at 7 - might root for them to make it for the AFC.

Whatwho...became 21 because of panic football. If the fieldgoal...which is all history and 'if'...would have been good or a td...they would not have been forcing the ball downfield. as it is, i think the seahawks are a decent team that will give the packers a good game. but the packers have the ability to generate a lot of pressure from the front four, which the skins couldn't do

A few observations:
-the o line couldn't cut it....sacks, hurries, pressure, no running game. that was the game right there.
-you cant throw the football 50 times and win.
-there were other problems y'all have named, but they don't add up compared to the o line.
-we do have a big receiver...anthony mix
-gibbs will be back, we'd not have gotten to the playoffs without him. If you don't like it, root for the cowboys. you'll fit in better.

Way I see it is Skins offense overpowered (and that's putting it midly) by Seattle's defense in first half. Then Skins blow major opportunity by not scoring after that KO recovery. Springs beaten like a tom-tom drum all game by what-his-name.

Sorry.. but you ar so full of 'it your eyes are brown.

Perhaps now TC's value will be lowered quite abit on the FA market.
He again looked quite human today.

It is absolutely my hope he will be back again as the #2 QB pushing JC and encouraging JC as well.

Q. for me, is what about John Jansen?
terrible injury, getting older, and huge
$8.8 mil. salary number next year.

S Springs older, looked bad at times today
M Washington looks older as well, and he too is a huge cap number in '08.

fellas.

ignore the seahawks fans that want to rub salt in the wound.

skins fans can't feel bad about the positive turn for this franchise.

the redskins are back now. they've demanded respect with one thing- heart. not individual stats, not high payed free agents brought in by an a-hole owner, not guys that have already made their name with another team and come in apathetically.

this year has brought out some core redskins. guys that are tough. guys that get after it. in the NFC east, no less.

this team is something to be proud of. they made the playoffs! that is not a regular thing. but one gets the feeling that the quality of the team is on the upswing.

it's been years.

give me this 9-7 group of guys over an arrogant 16-0 patriots team any day of the week.

HAIL TO THE REDSKINS!

As a Seahawk fan, the Redskins were the last team I wanted to face in the playoffs. I was really hoping to see Minnesota. I felt we had a better shot at winning against the Vikings. The 'Skins and thier fans have a lot of class and hope for nothing but success for you guys next year. (but not too much!) See you guys in the playoffs next year. RIP #21. We all miss him! Signing off for now from Washington State, Seahawk Mike.

no losing 6 starters including your qb, having your best player hands down die tragically in the middle of the season, lose close games repeatedly, fall to 5-7, and then rally to win 4 in a row to make the playoffs means RESILIENCE. Not PRETENDERS.

A resilient and determined team that almost pulled it off in a stadium where the home team lost one game. That's not embarrassing.
That's a launching board for greater things next year

Wow, I guess I didn't realize Seattle had such ridiculous, asinine fans. Taunting fans of a team about a player who was murdered midseason. No class ... strange for fans of a team and a head coach who throughout his career has shown nothing but class. The Hawks won the game handily, should have won the game handily ... we'll see what they do against a Dallas team at full strength.

Kudos to the Skins for a furious finish to the season but I can't give them any credit for their effort today, save for about 3 minutes to start the fourth quarter. I don't know where they go from here, but aside from the Todd Collins December miracle, there is much improvement to be made. How about they start by hiring a REAL GM?

GO PACKERS.

Well, I'm not a Dallas fan, obviously, but I'll give them this much credit: They play for the big win, not the consolation prize.

I think the Redskins organization is the same way, as is the Giants, Bears, Packers, et al. And they have the trophies to back it up.

The Seahawks? No.

Their idea of "success" is making the playoffs and then getting booted out (or worse, being raped in a Super Bowl) on a consistent basis.

Do you know what a Dallas Cowboys fan sees when he looks at Matt Hasselbeck? Answer: Danny White.

A mook. A guy who can win a few games, a guy who can get your hopes up, but ultimately a guy who will NEVER do what Staubach, Aikman (hell, even Clint Longley on one brilliant Sunday) can do: Get it done when it counts.

So, having said that, bask in the glory of a home win in the wildcard round, Seahawks fans - the end of the road draweth nigh!

Some predictions:

Superbowl: Cowboys v. Jags, and a toss-up then

For Redskins to be good in 2008:
Fire Cerrato and let Gibbs retire. Throw many $s at Cowher and let him come in a fix the mess. And it is a mess, a little emotion and a really bad NFC got the 'skins into the playofss where they should not have been. Should have been the Eagles.

For me ears to be happy:
Fire the idiots on redskin radio. They should be in a retirement home, not on the airwaves.

Posted by: rbates40 | January 5, 2008 9:58 PM | Report abuse

So that's it then. Huh.

I hoped we would play this game the way we played the last four, and we just didn't. The Seahawks were plenty good for most of this game. They beat us, and good for them.

We'll be puzzling over this game for a long time (Cap'n Obvious). Not getting any points after that astonishing kick recovery by Mix. Santana easing up before that bizarre interception and return. Our defense looking tired and unprepared but still so brilliant in spots. The run game not showing up. We've got a long postseason to sift through all that.

But I have to say I feel a strange kind of relief, letting go of this grueling season. It is so hard to be a loyal fan of any team, but to be a Skins fan during this season has been an ordeal. The end of that ordeal, on some level, is welcome. As will be its resumption next September.

HAIL.

A few things killed us today, all of which augur poorly for next season.

1) Continued meek, conservative play calling by Gibbs, which prevents us from closing teams out. When we recovered the kick-off, we should have tried to punch it in with the air attack, which had been clicking, rather than go lateral with Portis, who was averaging 2 yards per carry behind our crippled line. A TD would have given us an 8-point lead, we would have kept momentum, silenced the crowd (which was a BEASTLY 12th MAN, BTW) and not been forced to heave desperation long balls for interceptions. When Landry made his second interception, we should have tried to move the ball aggresively rather than run on first and 15 and 2nd and 13... again... with Portis averaging 2 per. We played it conservative in both cases in a do-or-die game, with a mere 1 point lead, and were burned. Had to punt to a guy killing us all day and, essentially, gave back the interception. Same story all season with leads lost in the second half. Gibbs is a great man, has been a real leader this tragic season, but has simply lost something, his nerve? hunger? The Pats are 16-0 because they would have taken those same opportunities to rip the other team's heart out. We need a more tactically aggressive, perhaps younger coach. Time for a Williams promotion?
2) D and O lines. Those Seahawks were CUT, younger, faster, stronger. Our O-line looked as it is: like a bunch of veterans brought in or late in their careers, desperately hoping their veteran guile could win out against youthful swagger. At some point, it no longer can, and will only do so less next year as it ages another year. Heyer has been a pleasant surprise, but is no match for the skilled, power guys who killed us today. Hopefully, he'll work hard on conditioning in the offseason. On the D-line, Montgomery has some skill, but is a poor sacker and not quick enough to penetrate, while overachiever Goldston, is not strong enough. Carter has been good, while Daniels, a warrior, is in decline. What we could do with a 10-12 sack per guy. It will take years to rebuild both lines but we better start this offseason. And start by getting a GM. We need strength, speed, athleticism and youth. No mean feat and not something that can be solved any more solely through free agency. Gibbs tried to put together a contender through free agency, and we got a helluva run this year with them. But I think 9-7 and a playoff game is as much as we have in this group, which needs more than tweaking, but a bona-fide youth movement. Thanks for the memories guys. Though we bow out, you made the last four weeks some of the finest Redskins hours of the last decade. Now let's go build a contender.

I did not think the play calling was conservative (and Saunders was doing the playcalling). We went for it on 4th down at least 3 times and did not make any of them. The analysts were saying we should run the ball more - even though we were not getting much yardage. Collins threw 50 times today and had only thrown 20+ times in all of his previous games.

Posted by: Lisa_R | January 5, 2008 10:25 PM | Report abuse

Actually, I think our D is fine.

They had two 6-picks against our offense.

Our problem today was where it's been since week 1: The right side of the offensive line.

When we get Jansen and Thomas back (and when Heyer has an offseason to bulk up and study film) I think we'll be better than ever.

Our goal next season MUST be to win enough games to HOST playoff games, NOT travel for them.

If not for the mid-season slump we had, we might have been hosting today.

That said, I am PROUD (call me a Kool-Aid drinker, OK) of the season this squad had.

mr redskin,

i'm with you-

people can say they abandoned the run game all they want, but you have to have BLOCKING before you can run.

so many times today when they'd show the slo-mo replay of some stout run stuff by seattle, you'd see numbers 74, 66, 61, etc. standing in the periphery with their hands on their hips.

the offensive line is so critical. (capitan obvious)

they need to realize that depending on jansen and randy is best case, that the skin's o-lines always get beat up and lose somebody. that's where depth comes in. heyer's getting there, but who else is back there?

if the two words "rick demulling" make your skin crawl, you know what i'm saying.

not only does the run game depend on it, but so does your young franchise QB's re-located knee.

they need gamers. draft some good, solid nasty linemen.

Trueblood,
If you want to be the typical coach basher, at least get the facts straight. The first play after the kickoff recovery was a pass to Cooley inside the five. Unfortunately it was low and he could hang on.

I just don't understand Heyer today.

Last week he held his own against Greg Ellis, and today he got smacked around by that St. Patrick's piece of shiite, Pat Kerney.

Well, he is an UFA, but I DO like him, and I hope he improves in the offseason.

That should have read "St.Patrick's Day piece of shiite."

Ahhh, well, I missed the mark.

And for the record, I am of Irish descent, so I feel I am entitled to use such a description.

Hey Guys...

What a roller coaster ride we've had this season! Today's game was certainly an unexpected dissappointment with the manner in which we played or didn't play for most quarters... I'm not sure what took the air out of our sails today - I could certainly understand this team just being worn down after their emotional run to get into the playoffs. That is something we should neveer forget. The HEART of these Redskins is unquestionable and something I will look back on fondly. As much as I would have liked to see us roll down to Dallas next week and knock them off their high horse, it ain't going to happen.

But how can you not be proud of this team after all the adversity and obstacles they have fought through...

This season was a Guantlet!

We have to continue to build this team smartly through effective draft picks and key FA acquistitions.

I like where we're headed. I hope we can

1. Hold onto some of our key veterans (IE - Shawn Springs)

2. Fill some important needs on O-Line, D-Line and WR, wisely thru the draft or FA.

3. Get our injured guys back healthy ASAP for OTA's and Training Camp. May the heal with Godspeed.

Hail to the Redskins!

RIP Sean - We will always remember you!

Goodnight!

Santana Moss quit. Plain and simple. If we want to point fingers, start with him flat out giving up on the pass, then giving up even trying to jump for the ball, then giving up with a lame-O attempt at tackling.

Mbearden,

You're right, they did try a pass. My bad. But that only makes running on second and ten that much more perplexing. 2nd and ten is a passing down, especially with Portis averaging 2.6 per carry and so many Seahawks in the red zone box. BTW, they also need a short yardage back. Portis is too small, Mike Sellars not quick/nimble enough. 3rd/4th and short has killed them this year, including today. And please, do not get assume one is just trying to 'bash' Gibbs because one criticises him. I have been a fan for 40 years and love Gibbs to death, but believe that he has made many mistakes this season, with second half adjustments, play calling, clock management, his decision not to hire a GM and be involved in personnal decisions, in playing not to lose with leads instead of to win, etc. I think these are valid, considered criticisms

Great game; we got outplayed-- but let's be honest now... it was Seattle's defense that won that game for them, truely. They got excellent pressure all day and 14 of those 35 points came from interceptions. Only one passing TD and one rushing TD. Our boys put up a valiant effort, and I think we're in a great, humbled position to regroup for next year. We have some great, solid personnel in there to build around I think.

So, with that said... what are our biggest needs in the off-season and draft? Everyone weigh in on this.

I've always thought we'd go for Alan Faneca for LG, maybe Albert Haynesworth at DT if they let him go in Tenn, or perhaps Asante Samuels at CB. Nevermind the money and cap issues-- what positions/ players should we be looking at?

Does anyone else think drafting a kicker or looking at free agent Rob Bironas seems feasible after Suisham shanked a 30 yarder?

Posted by: TDawg | January 5, 2008 11:17 PM | Report abuse

Before the revisionists try and take over, let's be clear: There was NOTHING wrong with the play-calling today.

We lost because our O-line didn't show up.

And given the history of a franchise with names like May, Grimm, Bostic, Jacoby, Lachey, Schlereth, Thielmann, et al, this group (save Heyer, a rookie UFA) should be ASHAMED of their effort today.

For almost three quarters, we made the Seahawks D look like the '85 Bears.

Posted by: MrRedskin21 | January 5, 2008 11:22 PM | Report abuse

Wow, still don't know what to say. Glad all that drama seems to over from earlier.
Not much to add, our O line got shredded, but we were playing with a bunch of backups. Seattle played alot better than I thought they would, gotta give it to them. SwissHam killed us with that shank, what a choke.

Proud of our team and our run to get to the playoffs, I think it did alot to bring everyone together and to start healing after Sean Taylor's murder. Well, there's always the offseason hamster nation!

Posted by: pulldownclaw | January 5, 2008 11:24 PM | Report abuse

Suisham is not the problem. He made all his field goal attempts in the Meadowlands (5 against the Jets) - and made some great kicks in extreme wind. Really can't understand how he missed that one today.

Posted by: Lisa_R | January 5, 2008 11:26 PM | Report abuse

By the way, Mix's kickoff recovery was awesome, but even before today, I have noticed that he has been kicking butt on kickoff coverage for about the last month.

What is his position? WR?

He is tall (compared to ARE and Moss).

Since McCardell is not likely to be back (and who knows about Caldwell), perhaps he (Mix) would be an interesting project at WR going into camp?

I don't know anything about him. Just mulling it.

Posted by: MrRedskin21 | January 5, 2008 11:30 PM | Report abuse

Yeah, Suisham's been pretty good this year, but there have been a few times where I've wondered about him... I wouldn't trust him in the clutch; I can't say that there's been a kicker since Mark Moseley (the MVP, no less!) where I've had full confidence in the kicking. But I don't know.

Posted by: TDawg | January 5, 2008 11:31 PM | Report abuse

I agree with Lisa re Suisham.

I can't blame the guy; we should have had 6 there, not a try for 3.

Also, from everything I've seen/heard from him, I don't believe he "choked" (he seems too steady for that).

But he sure as heck picked a crappy time to miss a sure-shot.

Hey, there hamsters. I've returned to home base.

Gosh.

Had 'em on the ropes, and let 'em off. Convert a TD after recovering the kick off, and I think that's the game. There would've been lots of time left, but with the mo' that would've been in our favor, I think we get a stop and another score.

Ah, well. Woulda shoulda coulda, right?

After going down 28-14, the thought that popped into my head was, "Well, no QB controversy next year, I guess."

It was a bitter loss, but made sweeter by the fact that I got to meet several of you guys and gals, plus Messrs. LaCanfora, Reid, and Wise. Dinner Friday night was a GREAT time, and SUPREME THANKS to PDiddy for dinner. Prashant, you are too generous and there's gotta be some way to repay you, dude. Yeah, but back to my earlier question: what are we looking for in free agency and the draft?

I know a lot of the drafts have us picking up a DE in the 1st round.

Personally, I wouldn't be disappointed in a tall posession receiver to take over the #3 spot to spread out our play from our first round pick. And I think James Hardy (Indiana U) is the guy for it-- go on, check his stats: http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/player/profile?playerId=160604

It wasn't that the O-line didn't show up, so much that it was overpowered and outclassed. Our O-line simply couldn't match their athleticism... a common problem all year. No amount of heart - and the kid has a lot - would allow Heyer to match Kearney. Our OTs have guts, figuratively and literally, their DTs have swagger and are ripped. We are in desperate need of athleticism on the O-line, pass rushing skills on the D-line. Those expecting it from Thomas and Jansen when they return shoul remember that they are over 30, an age of diminishing returns.

Offseason needs: OG, WR, DE, DT, and CB.
I think we should use our first three draft picks on a WR, DE, and CB. I think that they should start Heyer at RT next year and get him working hardddd in the off-season. Jansen got whooped all pre-season and Heyer, in my view, has earned a shot. Where should Lorenzo Alexander end up? I could see him developing into a RG or RT and working Heyer in as the heir-apparent to Chris Samuels.

Anyone, anyone? Bueller?

MrRedskin21,

Anthony Mix played with Jason Campbell at Auburn. He was on the practice squad with the Giants - played some preseason games for the Giants but was then placed on their practice squad. We went after him before Campbell went down...I think Campbell had something to do with that....he is said to be "raw but talented." And TALL.

When the Giants found out we were in contact with his agent they tried to keep him by promoting him to their squad but it was too late.

The 2008 draft is going to be VERY deep in decent, tall, possession-type wide receivers. And Mix is already on the roster and has all winter/spring to learn the offense. There is no compelling reason to use a 1st day pick on a possession WR when there are so many other critical needs (DE, CB, LB, OL).

I'm scoping out the mocks and I see a couple with us taking Dan Conner in the 1st round at linebacker... thoughts?

I think there will be a lot of free agent talent out there; I had forgotten about Mix (and Espy was having a good preseason run too). Any predictions for draft day? I think they'll draft a CB in the 2nd round, prolly a DE in the 1st.

The Sportsnet postgame crew discussed our future needs....they all agreed we need a WR to compliment Santana - said Randal El is more of a slot receiver - and O line depth.

BMitch also said he thinks Rock should be the guy for both kickoffs and punts. But Rock may not even be a Skin next season :(

Posted by: Lisa_R | January 6, 2008 12:08 AM | Report abuse

I like getting Alan Faneca and keeping Pete Kendall for depth-- he's played pretty good here, but he (and Fabini) are just good back-ups... we need to bulk up that O-Line. But I agree-- getting a #2 receiver in the 1st or 2nd round isn't a bad move.

Lisa-- why won't Rock be a Redskin next year? I can't imagine him not being here. That is, unless they're thinking Marcus Mason will be taking over his spot.

I think Springs will be gone.

He isn't getting any younger, and corners don't age like fine wines (with the exception of Darrell Green, but he's in a class all by himself).

I think D-line and O-line is where are draft needs are, not WR.

Can't blame Suisham. The guy is young, accurate, and playing in his first playoff game. The 'Skins once had another young, accurate kicker that they gave up on too early. Guy by the name of David Akers.

Also, Moss didn't give up on the ball. Collinsworth was running his mouth when he said that. Go back and look at the play - Moss was turned around and just never saw the ball.

As for what they need next year - obviously a S. O Line Depth. But probably more than anything, a Strength and Conditioning coach. The Redskins have gotten obliterated by injuries the past few years. When you look at the elite teams in the league (ie, Patriots), they don't have that problem.

It was a good season, especially the last 4 games. Reminds me of a team last year that was doing horrible in the middle of the season until their young guys pulled it together and they won their last 4. This year, they're 13-3 and hosting the Seahawks next week. I hope we can follow that same blueprint and have the 'Hawks in the playoffs in DC for a change.

Hail.

Still a devastating loss, but here's to looking out to the future just a little bit.

To see how the triumvirate of Gibbs, Cerrato, and Snyder think of acquiring players through free agency and the draft, one has to look at the last playoff loss to the Seahawks in '05. There, the lack of offensive production cost us the game. So, the Skins went and hired a new offensive coordinator and a bunch of wide receivers including Randle-El and Lloyd. So, the general philosophy tends to be to try and improve the areas that caused you to lose the playoff game. This is not wholly illogical (it has the downside that areas that are seemingly strong may be so because of emotion, scheme, etc.).

So, if that philosophy is applied to this year's draft and free agency, it seems evident that the reason we lost to the Seahawks today is because the offensive line got slapped around and the defensive front four was able to generate little pressure. Gibbs even said at halftime that we needed to pass protect better. Also, a tall possession receiver would have helped immensely in the red zone rather than to rely on Cooley repeatedly.

However, Buges has done a great job with unheralded offensive linemen such as Heyer and good talent at guard can be found in the middle rounds (Dockery was a 3rd for instance). The same can be said for a tall possession receiver if this kid Mix does not cut it. So, that leaves the D-line. I suspect, in the first round, the Redskins go after a monster at defensive end to replace Phillip Daniels or a safety. The only exception to this is if there's someone really special in the secondary (perhaps a safety), but that would mean that we would be drafting in the secondary in the first round four years in a row.

In the second and third round you certainly get o-line depth and secondary help. And in the later rounds, you get linebackers, tight ends, and maybe wide receivers that can contribute to special teams immediately.

Just my 2 cents...

Posted by: hailbg | January 6, 2008 1:52 AM | Report abuse

also, wanted to add that i remember after '05, the general consensus seemed to be that we were a couple of pieces of the puzzle away.

And then Gibbs hired a new offensive coordinator which brought in a whole new offensive scheme and in hindsight Brunell was beyond done which meant a new qb had to come in. So, we were clearly not a couple of pieces away offensively.

Defensively, one always got the feeling that Williams was doing a lot with smoke and mirrors without comparable talent to the top defenses in the league.

This time, offensively, it seems the Redskins are a couple of pieces away. When
the Skins get the right side of their line back, they'll actually have a good running game especially with Thomas being able to pull again. And the qb position is vastly improved as are the skill positions.

Defensively, the infusion of talent in the defensive line is welcome as is better linebacker play. But, I still think the Skins need to get more of a pass rush from their front four which is why a defensive end is important. And they need a safety and/or cornerback if Springs leaves. But, even here, it's just a couple of pieces rather than a complete overhaul

I still haven't read through the comments, but did skim them briefly and saw rumblings about Moss giving up on that pass. My friend Dean wondered the same uagthing when I talked to him after the game.

My first-hand account is this: jwlemons has it exactly right. Moss never saw that pass. He turned out of his route and "sat down" to wait for the ball, and my immediate thought at that split second was, "He doesn't see the ball." And I promise you that he didn't. It was evident in his body language on that play.

Further, what past evidence is there that would make anyone think Santana would give up on a play ever, much less in a clutch situation?

One last thought before bed, expanding on something I said earlier about there not being a QB controversy next year.

This game, unfortunately, revealed Todd's weakness. He knows Saunders' offense inside and out, but Saunders' offense is based on rhythm -- knowing when to release the ball and the spot on the field where it should be thrown. The Seahawks, to their credit, did a very good job of disrupting this rhythm. Robbed of that, Todd isn't left with many tricks up his sleeve.

Jason doesn't know the offense like Todd does, but he'll continue to learn, and he can do a lot more on his own if the rhythm of a play is disrupted. Todd can't make a play with his legs. Jason did it a number of times this season.

We definitely keep Todd as our #2 QB, since he proved his value as a reliever, and his expertise is invaluable in helping JC continue to learn the offense.

In the last four games prior to this one, we saw what Todd could do that Jason couldn't yet (generalizing here, I realize a several guys got healthy at the end). In tonight's game, we saw what Todd can't do that Jason can.

zilla, on that critical INT it looked to me like the pocket was collapsing on Collins as he threw that ball, as it collapsed during a lot of our plays.

What I mean is, it seemed to me that Todd was pushed back just as he released that throw, and I wonder if that wasn't to blame for the ball's being so far off target that Santana looked back and couldn't even see it.

When I said "easing up" above about Santana I didn't mean "giving up"... the whole play was bizarre, from the awful throw to what Santana did to the sorry pursuit during the great runback.

Of course, there were a lot of pass plays like that backbreaker, where a little or a lot of contact seemed to affect Collins' trajectory. He sure looked pedestrian in the face of a surprisingly good pass rush and behind a surprisingly indifferent pass blocking line, didn't he?

(Props to Seahawk blocker on the first INT-TD return who, it appeared to me, did NOT take a free shot at Collins. Brickbats to the Seahawk blocker on the second INT-TD return who I thought DID take a free shot at Collins, when the game was out of reach. But I could be misremembering this.)

Did anyone look at the officiating? Seattle got away with holding on every serious Redskins pass rush, one of their touchdowns was achieved by pulling the Redskin's db's jersey off of his left shoulder pad, Seattle was going through Redskin receivers to "make a play on the ball" with impunity all night, and they got called for one interference? No holding calls on their o-line while Todd is getting pile-drived after the ball has left his hand. Come on-this matters! If this game is called remotely fairly, the Skins win this game.

zilla, simpatico as usual.

Great meeting you and the missus last night in Seattle, my man.

What a freaking bummer of a game. Ah well.

Hail.

Posted by: NateinthePDX | January 6, 2008 2:53 AM | Report abuse

patteagape, I thought there were some dubious calls in both directions. Seemed like we had a crew who really wanted to "let 'em play."

I don't believe the officiating even belongs on a list of reasons we lost this game. The Seahawks' beating us would be atop that list. And our playing like crap for a good part of the game would also appear on that list.

leavings -- thanks for coming in and joining the conversation this week. As I told a bunch of Hawks fans at the sports bar today, good luck to you guys the rest of the way.

I think we all realize there is a spectrum of fan behavior, and the bad examples (such as on this very thread) reinforce just how cool it is to encounter folks who are respectful and have something to say that's worth reading.

We have a resident Cowboy fan and a resident Eagle fan and even a Fins fan who wandered in before our opening day game and never left. We could probably use somebody from the NFC West since our divisions face each other next regular season.

What I'm saying is, if you want to stick around and be our resident Seahawks fan, that would be fine with me. With the caveat that this blog could eat your life, welcome.

I am exhausted and probably will collapse eventually but am considering writing up a more detailed breakdown of the P Diddy-hosted meet-up last night in Seattle. While the memories are still sort of fresh.

(Speaking of which, I would not be surprised to learn that our man Diddy is right at this very moment leading J-La and J-Reid and a gaggle of other folks from bar to bar around Seattle.)

Let me just put this out there: I realize it's eight months or more away, but all RI blog peeps should seriously consider coming out to this fall's Skins game in Seattle.

All right, that will do it for me. Need to rest up.

Tomorrow (today) is the beginning of the offseason, when we really shine up here on Redskins Insider. That sound you hear is the whinnying of a winged unicorn.

Hail to the blog.

Hail to the Redskins.

You can't be anything but proud of the effort this team has put in over the whole season. Yep, loads of things to fix, and not least the OL, but given all the circumstances of the year, we couldn't have asked for more. We know the one thing we're not thin on come draft day is guts and heart. Am also feeling more confident in the playcalling - don't think you can second-guess too much down the stretch (when every game was 's**t or bust'), just got to hope they don't slip back to old conservative ways.

this is the 1st season I've got in to the blog, what have I been missing?!!

Hail, and RIP 21...

Just wanted to drop a quick note...

To the 'Skins: a horrific season, a great ending. You've earned the right to keep your heads up all offseason. I can't imagine a team dealing with more adversity. It's still hard for me to believe that an NFL superstar (to say nothing of father, future husband, and teammate) was murdered and simply will never return.

To the hamsters: don't get down. Let's talk playoffs, free agents, and draft.

To all those who I had the awesome opportunity to meet Saturday: thank you. It's tough being a 'Skins fan out here in the upper left hand corner of the country. You brought back a little bit of nostalgia and more than a little bit of my childhood: the fervor, the passion for the burgundy and gold. Thank you a million times over.

To the entire WashPo crew, and JLaC: thank you for your hard work all season. Get some rest, and get ready for the offseason. Redskin One is gassed up and ready to head to Chicago (Lance Briggs), New England (Asante Samuel), Pittsburgh (Alan Faneca), and points beyond.

To all: Merry Christmas :-)

There are no Redskins articles written by Cindy Boren at wapo.com today. We are all a little poorer for it.

We love you, Cindy. :)

Gibbs II story line:
Coulda, woulda, and shoulda.
Wait until next year.

Posted by: talent_evaluator | January 6, 2008 8:51 AM | Report abuse

The bottom line is that we were a playoff team this year. We didn't back into the playoffs, we earned it against all odds. Gibbs has taken us to the playoffs in two of the past 4 years. No other coach between Gibbs 1 & 2 has even come close to that. If we make smart decisions this off season and don't go overboard on big names, we should really make some noise next year. The best thing about our young players that have flourished this year is that they are fiercely loyal to the Redskins, unlike a bunch of mercenary free agents.

Posted by: jimwell | January 6, 2008 9:18 AM | Report abuse

really TE? ok.....

feelin worse today than yesterday. I think the emotional run wore off yesterday and to many small mistakes, blown assignments and missed oppurtunities to overcome.

but i am proud of the team, it was a wild ride and maybe they can parlay this into something next year.

the key to offseason is "under reaction" NO wholesale changes, no shiny new toys, no major philosophical changes...

example: i ggrilliams gets HC job, promote greg blanche, DON'T go get an outside d-cord.

Posted by: chrislarry | January 6, 2008 9:40 AM | Report abuse

Agreed, Chris Larry. Our team is united now....they all stated this after the game yesterday and said they hope we keep this nucleus together. If we look at the past, the Skins have much better seasons when they do not make splashy moves in the offseason. London Fletcher was really our only big acquisition last season and he was more than worth it.

Posted by: Lisa_R | January 6, 2008 9:44 AM | Report abuse

Ah well, I guess it had to come to an end eh? I was dreaming of the emotional run going all the way to the Superbowl but when you look at it coldly, this team is never a Superbowl team right now. A playoff team yes, but not a Superbowl team. Having said that, for a few minutes in that 4th quarter last night I was dreaming again.

Great effort in adversity this year by our Skins. It's always a kick in the nuts when the season ends though. I'm going to avoid the whole "we're only a player or two away from being a great team" chat. Here's hoping that next year we can go further, but with this team you just never know - that's their charm!! Roll on the offseason and all the speculation that comes with it!

Posted by: tartanskin | January 6, 2008 9:51 AM | Report abuse

Hey all

Great game... for the seahawks. It just seemed everything we did was a step slow. We made some serious moves early in the 4th but it was not enough. But I am so proud of these boys. As mentioned above, we do not need to make wholesale changes. No new philosophy by the coaching staff. Build on what we have. HTTR. Here is to a great 08. By way Lisa keep up the superstitions. They worked more times than not.

CL--

Didn't you just repeat what I wrote, only in more words?

coulda, woulda, shoulda = "small mistakes, blown assignments and missed oppurtunities"

wait until next year = "maybe they can parlay this into something next year"

I guess I couldn't agree with you more.

Posted by: talent_evaluator | January 6, 2008 9:58 AM | Report abuse

Gibbs was not the reason why we lost that game. He was not conservative yesterday. That game was lost by poor Offensive line play and playmakes not making plays. Moss and Cooley dropped passes at critical times. The defense kept us in the game. As much as I want to explain it away, Santana Moss quit on that play. I've heard him say many times, "just give me a chance to make a play". He's made many plays for us before so I'm not bashing him, just an observation.

Posted by: rickyroge | January 6, 2008 9:59 AM | Report abuse

Here it is plain and simple...

1) We have to cut some ties and make some
tough decisions...Brunell, Wade,
McCardell, Lloyd, Torrence, etc.
2) Draft well...WR, OL (Guard) and Tackle,
DE, CB, S
3) Be smart in free agency (CB, WR, or DE)
4) This receiving corps needs an upgrade. They are steady, but not that explosive, next level receiver.
5) Campbell is that starter, Collins is the back-up. Don't get me wrong, Campbell may not have done much better, but we have no QB controversy here. We actually have a good problem.
6) Gibbs must be a bit tougher with personnel decisions if they are not gonna bring in a GM. The worst thing he can do is get all sentimental and bring everybody back and say "these are my guys". The offense needs to get younger and more atheltic.
7) Cut Marcus Washington. Sorry...his time has come, nothing personal.
8) Sign Lorenzo Alexander.
9) Trade Ladell Betts. You can get that pick back you gave away for Kendall (still good move). Cartwright could handle the load if Portis went down.
10) Bring in a big receiver, Moss is #2, Randel-El 3rd, Caldwell 4th, Keep Mix and Thrash for Special Teams.

There it is!

maybe we said the same thing TE, i just stayed away from empty cliches while doing it.

Also if Gibbs Mach II means going to playoffs 50% of time, I will take it after the PO drought this team has been on.

WELL THATS THAT ??for the season the ups and the downs like joe gibbs says we wont forget this year!!all we can do now is look back with pride on how the team played there hardest and came together when others would have failed all the close games we lost and ones we won!
the pain and hart ache of sean taylor [RIP 21]its allso a time to look forward lets hope this team can stay together for next season lets hope coach joe stays and gives it a real go next season if everyone stays fit and we get 3or4 top players in [W-R 6foot plus with good hands aCOVER C-B MORE DEPTH ON THE O-L-D-L and maybe STUD L-B]but a guess all the NFL are looking for them?? any way thats sport theres allways next season GOOD LOOK TO ALL SKINSFANS IN 2008 KEEP THE FAITH WE WILL BE BACK THATS FOR SURE!!!!!!!!!!! ON+ON

Shhhh! Nate! You're going to rob him of the dawning realization that he's in too deep to get out, and that's the gnosis that binds us hamsters together. It's like being in the mafia. Or like being in quicksand. Delicious quicksand.

It's like delicious mafia quicksand.

I just remembered what was to me the funniest thing that happened yesterday.

Stumped and I were standing in line for coffee at Qwest (thanks again for the coffee, Stumped), and I was getting razzed by a steady stream of Seahawks fans as they passed by.

Most of it was good natured, but one particularly belligerent guy was so intent on informing me of his opinion that I was/am foolish that he wasn't looking where he was going, bumped into another Seahawks fan going the other way, and dropped both of his $8 beers.

That's right, slick. Mess with me, and it will cost you $16 in forfeited stadium beer. Spread the word.

No kidding Freak and Nate! Since I restumbled over here about a month ago (when people were much more civil), I have been MUCH less productive!!!

That said, I have loved blogging during the games when I can.

Looking forward to the games today - that Jags/Steelers game last night was great. Hope today we have good games too.

I second both this motion and this emotion.

We already know we'll have a Pac NW contingent for Revenge-A-Thon 2008, but we could definitely use some extra-regional hamster blood for that game.

puttinforbird, you're on notice that we want you here again.

It'll be nice to hang with Jasno and hopefully the additional WaPo crew again, and Cindy, if you can find a way to start siphoning $2-3 a day into a non-descript line item in the travel budget, you'll have plenty of money for airfare and hotel next season. For realsies, you gotta make the trip next time.

I also think that at least us NW peeps should make plans for Skins/9ers in San Fran.

Posted by: freakzilla | January 6, 2008 11:39 AM | Report abuse

Oh and one more thing:

Seattle fans are also without a doubt the least intelligent fans I've come across. At least football intelligence. They simply didn't understand half of what was going on on the field at the game. I had to keep explaining things over and over to the guys sitting both next to and behind me. No lie.
