Adam Schefter -

"One fact further illustrates just how bad and embarrassing Oakland’s trade for cornerback DeAngelo Hall this offseason actually was.

In addition to a fifth-round pick, the Raiders also traded a second-round pick, the 34th overall selection, to Atlanta for Hall. Well, on draft day, the Falcons wound up trading the 34th and 48th overall pick to Washington for the 21st overall pick.

Now, some six months later, the Redskins wound up with Hall and the Raiders second-round pick, which they used on Michigan State wide receiver Devon Thomas. And it cost Oakland $8 million!"

The Redskins currently have the #4 overall defense in the league.

Now incorporate the addition of Deangelo Hall, a healthy Shawn Springs, and a healthy Jason Taylor.

Wow, just wow.

1) You are restricted by something... can you tell us what it is?
Q) There are no bathroom stalls wide enough for the banner in your work location.

TE don't forget we have no pass rush so we won't be able to stop anyone. And after 9 games the draft picks are a bust.

On the musuem/places to visit theme. When I was growing up in NOVA, going to the Air and Space and the Zoo were my top two choices for attractions to be dragged to by my parents. I haven't had a chance yet to get back up there and go to the Dulles Airport expansion of A&S. Looking forward to taking my toddler up there soon to do all that stuff. Just too bad I can't take him to RFK for a 'Skins game.

You know, I've loved going to RFK for DCUnited games over the last few years, when the stands are reasonably full and the stadium is bouncing, it's quite a rush.

But they cannot tear it down fast enough. It is a dump. With a capital D.

I am still trying to figure out how the Hall signing was possible Vinny had a show on friday for two hours, how did he have any time to sign Hall.

I love how Torrence has never been talked about up here except for when he gets burned, and now it is a huge tragedy that we cut him.

Some idiot said on an earlier post we are a worse team for getting rid of Torrence what a joke.

I can't believe the guys are even able to carry on and practice today without Leigh being there.

United use RFK as their practice facility as well... so it's dormant for the next four months or so.
Their quest for a new stadium is eerily reminiscent of the Squire's dealings with the City.

I still don't understand why so many (including the "media schlubs") want to point to Kelly's possible IR as a source for the roster spot. If/when Kelly does go to IR, another WR IS going take his place. That has been made perfectly clear every time Zorn has discussed the Kelly situation.

The only real possiblities were Tryon, Torrence, and maybe S. Alexander. Obviously there is still some concern about Betts' return to health, and Tryon is a draft pick (meaning he is cheaper, and has more upside/potential). Pretty much any other team in the NFL would have made the same decision.

It's just not that big a deal. It's Torrence for criminie's sake!

And JR seems to have in his head that once Springs returns, he won't get hurt again. C'moooonnn! Let's be realistic. Hall is BETTER THAN Torrence, so he's an upgrade, period.

Okay, I feel nice and rested from a blog bye week (posted a few times, but nothing like a normal week). Haven't really been keeping up with all of the entries except this morning.

Like the Hall signing. No-risk/high reward, if you ask me. Kind of surprised they cut Torrence instead of Tryon, but oh well, still seems like we could be loaded at CB now, as long as everyone is healthy enough to play. Looks like our LB's and defensive linemen are getting healthy again too. Very happy with how our overall defense is looking for Dallas week. Are there any updates on our two most important offensive cogs (Samuels and Moss)? We really need them back in full swing. Dallas is gonna be jacked up for this game. I hope Romo comes back and we beat them again. No excuses for the girls.

Cindy, all I ask for today is updates on Moss and Samuels........pretty please?

And Herm Edwards is an idiot. What a boneheaded call.

He must drive a Dodge Stratus.

Torrence was a decent nickel CB, but not much more. It is just ignorant to complain about dropping a guy to make room for a 2-time Pro-Bowler who is only 24 years old.

Could we have dropped Tryon or put Kelly on IR? Sure, but that is just splitting hairs at that point.

Thanks 4th.

Did JLa call him out for signing D Hall? I must have missed that.

Secondly it's a fair question to ask why a contributor like Torrence was booted while a non contributor like Tryon was retained. The locker chemistry is a funny thing and you don't want to mess with it too much.

Having said that if our season rested on the shoulders of Torrence we were in trouble to begin with.

JLa calls out Vinny, Vinny calls out JLa. They both deserve what they get from each other. I like JLa and Vinny. Larry Michael(s) continues to be a chooch.

Posted by: Gweez | November 10, 2008 10:28 AM | Report abuse

I, for the record, am in Torrence's corner on this one. He was a solid nickel back and a very good dime-back. Very rarely was he beat in coverage (only one play the entire year that I can remember), and team's 3rd or 4th WRs hardly ever have an impact against us largely due to Torrence's solid play. I thought the smart move would have been to cut Tryon, as he is a guy, in my view, that has a maximum ability to be what Torrence currently is. And as of right now, he's nowhere near that ability.

But I understand that the team is absolutely better this week than it was last week. The best secondary in the league currently resides in DC. Now maybe Hall can teach the other guys how to catch...

From growing up in the area and then relocating to Massachusetts, you take the zoo for granted. It is a phenomemal zoo and, even though it may be a little cold for it, I'd highly recommend that you try to make it over there Greg.
I took the zoo for granted growing up there as well. While dating my wife she took me to Roger Williams Zoo in RI. As we stood in line to pay admission, I thought to myself that this zoo must be fantastic to charge admission. Sadly, I was just spoiled by the fact that the National Zoo was the only zoo that I had visited up to that point in my life.

This was a smart move on behalf of the redskins and here is why. we inquired about a trade with atlanta for hall but turned it down when they were asking so much, so we already had interest in him. by signing him for vet minimum we get a chance to see if he fits in our system and if he does we sign him to a long term contract and release shawn springs next year. they have been trying to find a way to get rid of springs without a significant drop off in ability and this might be it.

So you heard it first here, next year springs will be gone and hall will stay.

Malcolm Kelly is going to practice today. If he can get through it with no problems he stays. If it bothers him they are going to shut it down for the season.

We head down to the Roger Williams Zoo most times. Zip through the zoo in a couple of hours then head to the Roger Williams Park. There's a great playground sponsored by Hasbro there.
For what it's worth, I like the Hall signing. Had to throw some Redskins in her somewhere.

Adding Hall can only be viewed as a good thing. After reading that Torrence was so popular with the other defensive players, I'm a little bit concerned about the chemistry. You can not underestimate it's value in a team sport. However, as long as the coaches made the decision, we have to belief that they considered that element and it still was the best choice.

Re: Torrence v. Tryon

Gotta agree w/ craig2 on this one and disagree w/ psps23.

Tryon is locked into a longer contract, we spent a 4th on Tryon, Tryon is faster, Tryon is younger.

Worst case scenario: In 2 years Tryon is no better than Torrence - a nickel back at the bottom of the roster.

Best case scenario: In 2 years Tryon develops into a capable CB that gets on the field for every defensive snap and he blossoms into a tremendous punt-returner.

In closing, let's be reminded that we are talking about LEIGH FREAKING TORRENCE!!!!!! This is not Champ Bailey getting traded or Lavar Arrington getting benched.

2 weeks ago, Leigh Torrence was known as the nickel back who got beat by Donnie Avery. Now, all of a sudden, the locker room is going to meltdown b/c he's not there and the future of our secondary is in shambles.

Perspective, people.

A caller just asked about Ray Manluga (spelling)LB from USC, and Vinny commented that he should be long gone before the skins get to pick. Hmmm. Could another WR be high on his wish list?

Posted by: TWISI | November 10, 2008 11:21 AM | Report abuse

P1,

I agree with much of what you said. My only problem with Tryon is this: I truly believe that if Tryon was an undrafted guy he would have been one of the first people cut. Now obviously I don't see him practice but I truthfully believe that.

I hate the idea of a guy being on the roster just because he's a draft pick.

Having said that, I agree it's not a big deal to lose torrence....or at least not THAT big a deal.

Greg,

I'm with sween on the Building Museum. Great place, small crowds.

I hate the Washington Zoo. It's run for the benefit of the staff who work there, not the patrons. They spend all their money on staff salaries, not on modernizing the grounds. The exhibits are very old-fashioned -- big cages and the animals are far away. The various buildings are far apart and on a fairly steep hill. Easy going down, but coming back up gets tiresome. I've taken my kids to lots of zoos all over the world, and this one is the worst.

When my kids were younger their favorite was the Natural History Museum -- particularly the kids room where they can touch evrything, try on costumes, etc. And the Air and Space Museum is always worth a visit.

I never said the secondary is in shambles. I said we have the best secondary in the league.

I just realize that Torrence is far better than Tryon, and IMO, the smart option would have been to cut Tryon instead. You're right, 2 weeks ago Torrence was known for the guy that was beaten by Avery. You know why? Because he hasn't been heard from the rest of the season because nobody else has beaten him. And just to counter:

Worst case scenario: 2 years down the road, Tryon hasn't improved, is still an awful cover corner, and can't be trusted to even be a dimeback. He gets released.

Best case scenario: Tryon improves his coverage skills and becomes a solid nickel-back. In this case, he becomes what Torrence currently is.

Not trying to be a negative nancy about this situation, as obviously Hall is a great pickup. Just defending my opinion.

Can you quantify this in some way?? What exactly does 'far better' entail. How do you know this??

Alright, IMO, Torrence is far better than Tryon based on the fact that Torrence has been trusted to play in every game this season, has played significant chunks last season, and has rarely made mistakes from what I've seen (with the one notable being the Avery play, which happened to be a great diving adjustment by the WR). Meanwhile Tryon has rarely seen the field at all, hasn't been burdened with any visible responsibility on game day, and looked awful in the only time I've seen him on the field during preseason. That's how I'm basing my opinion.

JohnD--Houston is one of the places we had a really good experience -- in that butterfly museum. Kids (and parents) loved that.

Greg--On the Building Museum, there are times when they have crafts people giving hands-on demonstrations designed for kids. When that happens, there's no better place in town to take a kid. But, otherwise 4th's right -- it can be off-putting for young kids, although they always love the gift shop. You might check their website (or the Post Weekend Edition) to see what's happening this weekend.

Obama will have his inaugural ball(s) all over town, and the Building Museum will undoubtedly be one venue.

Yes, the last time I was at the Zoo, I saw a Panda reading a jasno column, and then updating RI on how the beat writer should be fired. Posted by: JohnDinHouston | November 10, 2008 10:57 AM

Post of the day, JohnD, post of the day!

sorry cindy, but if you were talking about that john's comment then your declaration of it being the "comment of the day" was at the very least telling of wapo's position on skins coverage. you being jasno's colleague/boss(?) and all. jasno doesn't deserve the jm220 and barno treatment but he deserves most of the criticism up here. and his latest work was, shall we say in-line with what he's been doing the whole season "focus on the negative".

i guess you're using jasno as the sarah palin of your campaign against danny.

If vinny wants to "clear things up" he and LaCanfora should sit in a studio for 2 hours and work it out like men.

Agreed. Thumb wrestle to the death (or to the thumb tendon tears, whichever comes first). Note: pandas have fraud thumbs.

4th, disagree about Bldg Museum exhibits not aimed at kids. Recent personnel faves were "Windows!" and another one about "Materials". And yes, ONE of the dozen plus Inaugural Balls will be in the Bldg Museum.

Interesting bit re: Vinny comment about Rey MassiveLoogie not being available when Skins pick ... maybe suggests that the Skins maybe committing to stick with their first round slot (and avoid the top half rookie salaries by NOT trading up)? With CB depth theoretically addressed (allowing bygones and see-yas with Springs), the replacement guys for Marcus and Kendall become key roster positions to think about. [Personally, this amateur GM thinks free agency is the answer for the next SLB.]

Holy cats, I just realized this is the Sunday night game (self-chiding with a chest slap and 5 Hail Marys for just now knowing this).

As if this game weren't big enough already - we simply cannot lose back to back primetime games in our house. Forget playoffs, divisional standings, etc. This is about pride. We just got punked on national TV and now our vile, loathsome enemy #1 is coming to town.

Want it, need it, gotta have it!

HAIL

I love the pickup of hall cuz our pass rush is terrible and we need serious speed and help there. I think Hall will pick up his enthusiasm and kick butt!!! What I relly want to know is why is it that when I (we) the fans can clearly see that the instant replay shows the obvious and that the refs can't seem to get the call right? I just dont understand or dont want to believe that the mafia or vegas people are involved but something is wrong with the replay system!!!!!!! CLEARLY!!! SKINS 34 COWGIRLS 23
