Redskins beat Packers 16-13 in OT
Updated 4:44 p.m.
Overtime
With a timely interception by safety LaRon Landry, the Washington Redskins completed a late-game comeback and defeated the Green Bay Packers 16-13 in overtime Sunday.
After both teams failed to score on their first drives of the overtime period, Green Bay took over on its own 19 yard line. QB Aaron Rodgers hit Brandon Jackson for five yards on first down, but on second down as he rolled out he was pressured by defensive tackle Jeremy Jarmon.
Landry made a sliding interception of Rodgers' pass. The replay review upheld the interception though it nullified Landry's 23-yard return.
Washington took over on the 39-yard line and picked its way downfield.
QB Donovan McNabb hit Galloway for five yards, then found Cooley for four more. A defensive holding call on Brady Poppinga on third and 1 gave Washington a first down. A five yard loss and a pass interference call on Charles Woodson on second down set the Redskins up with another first down on the 22 yard line.
McNabb ran for gains of five and two yards on the next two plays before Graham Gano nailed the game-winning 35-yard field goal to give Washington the 16-13 win.

Fourth quarter
Despite not showing much life throughout the contest, the Redskins' offense was revived in the fourth quarter. A long touchdown early in the quarter and a late field goal were enough to send the game to overtime tied at 13.
The Redskins went for it on fourth down just two plays into the fourth quarter but could not convert, and Green Bay took over on its own 42-yard line.
The Redskins defense continued its strong play and forced another punt, and rookie Brandon Banks returned the kick 30 yards to set Washington up with prime field position at its own 40-yard line.
It took just two plays for the Redskins to capitalize.
McNabb hit Joey Galloway for 12 yards on first down, then found Anthony Armstrong down the middle from the Packers' 48. Armstrong leaped and made a great catch with Green Bay safety Charlie Peprah trying to break it up, and the Redskins pulled within 13-10 with 11 minutes 44 seconds remaining.
The Redskins' defense again held on the next possession despite giving up a 25-yard pass early in the possession. On third and two, Vonnie Holliday dropped back out of the nickel package and tipped Rodgers's pass, forcing the Packers to punt.
Banks again came up with a solid return, and the Redskins started on their own 25-yard line. McNabb hit Armstrong on the first play for 23 yards to move Washington to the 48-yard line.
An illegal-contact penalty turned a third down into a first, and McNabb hit Armstrong again for 13 yards on third down -- a great play in which Armstrong caught a deflection off the hands of Keiland Williams.
The drive stalled there, however, and Graham Gano missed a 51-yard field goal that would have tied the game.
Green Bay took over on its own 41-yard line, but the Redskins defense again stepped up -- a sack by Lorenzo Alexander and London Fletcher keyed yet another four and out -- and the Redskins took over on their 20 following another Packers punt.
McNabb hit Galloway for 11 yards on first down and after a four-yard run by Torain, McNabb hit Cooley for 30 yards on a play in which Cooley broke three tackles.
McNabb hit Cooley again for six yards and Torain rushed for two more. An incompletion on third and two set up a 45-yard field goal for Gano and this time, he nailed it to tie the game with 1 minute 7 seconds remaining.
The Packers were able to drive into field-goal territory in the final 67 seconds, with Rodgers finding Andrew Quarless for nine yards, then rushing for 14 yards and finding Quarless again for 21 yards.
Crosby's 53-yard field-goal attempt had plenty of distance and appeared to be the game winner, but it clanked off the left upright with one second remaining.
The Redskins tried a Hail Mary that was intercepted by Tramon Williams and returned deep into Washington territory before he was finally tackled. Rookie left tackle Trent Williams appeared to injure his left knee on the play and stayed on the ground until well after the overtime coin flip.

Third quarter
It was a rather uneventful third quarter, with Mason Crosby hitting one field goal to make it a two-possession game but then missing another to keep the Redskins within 10 points going into the fourth quarter.
The Redskins opened the second half with the ball and initially moved it, with McNabb's 13-yard completion to Santana Moss on third and 3 giving the Redskins solid field position. The Redskins could gain just four more yards, however, and punted.
Green Bay took over and quickly started driving down the field. Rodgers found Jackson for 12 yards, and two plays later Packers' RB Brandon Jackson took an inside handoff for 15 yards. Rodgers then found Donald Driver for 34 yards.
On first down from the Redskins' 30, Kuhn rushed for seven yards. But Green Bay couldn't pick up the first down with Reed Doughty breaking up a pass in the end zone on third down. Crosby hit a 36-yard field goal to give the Packers' a 13-3 lead.
The Redskins subsequently went three and out, and Green Bay put together another long drive.
A mix of Jackson runs (of seven and nine yards) and Rodgers passing (completions of eight and 14 yards) moved the Packers into field goal range, but Crosby missed his 48-yard field goal wide right.
Washington took over and moved to midfield before McNabb was sacked for a loss of nine. The quarter ended with a short six yard pass to Cooley and the Redskins facing third and 13 from the 47-yard line.

Second quarter
Despite struggling offensively throughout the half and giving up more than 150 yards passing and 200-plus yards of offense, the Redskins put together a late drive and went into the half trailing just 10-3.
The Packers opened the second quarter driving at the Redskins 20 yard line, and two consecutive passes from Rodgers moved them to the Washington one. There, however, the Redskins defense buckled down.
On second down, John Kuhn was stopped short of the goal line. On third down, Rocky McIntosh met Rodgers on a quarterback sneak to stop him short of the line. Green Bay opted to go for it on fourth down, but Rodgers was pressured by Chris Wilson on a bootleg and his pass was broken up by Lorenzo Alexander.
The Redskins took over on their one-yard line and were able to move the ball out to the 33-yard line before punting. Tramon Williams returned Hunter Smith's 52-yard punt for 52 yards, and though the Packers netted minus-one yard on the drive, Mason Crosby nailed a 52-yard field goal to give Green Bay a 10-0 lead.
Rookie Brandon Banks returned the ensuing kickoff 62 yards, but the run was called back because of an illegal block by safety Chris Horton, and the Redskins were forced to start on their own eight-yard line.
Green Bay again went three and out with three consecutive incompletions and the Redskins took over on their own 15-yard line.
A penalty on Charles Woodson wiped out a Clay Matthews sack, but a sack on second down put the Redskins in a difficult position. On third and 18 from the 12-yard line, however, McNabb did well to avoid the rush, roll out and find Santana Moss for 52 yards.
Two runs from Torain and a completion to Moss set up third and one on the 16-yard line, and Torain rushed for three yards and a first down. McNabb overthrew Anthony Armstrong on the goal line on first down and a screen play to tight end Chris Cooley went for just six yards. McNabb's third down pass was incomplete as he avoided the Packers' rush and the Redskins settled for a 26-yard field goal by Graham Gano that pulled them to within 10-3.
First quarter
The Redskins failed to take advantage of an early turnover and struggled in pass defense in the first quarter, falling behind Green Bay, 7-0.
LaRon Landry's hit on tight end Donald Lee on the second play from scrimmage forced a fumble, and free safety Kareem Moore picked up the loose ball and returned it to the Packers 21-yard line.
But the team lost one yard on two rushes, Casey Rabach's shotgun snap went through McNabb's hands and the Redskins' quarterback was sacked by Clay Matthews for a loss of 22 yards - pushing Washington out of field goal range and forcing a punt.
Green Bay took over on its own 10 and on the first play, running back Brandon Jackson busted through the middle, juked Moore in the open field and dashed down the right sideline before he was chased down by DeAngelo Hall after a 71 yard gain to the Redskins' 19-yard line.
Green Bay used two plays to get to the Redskins one-yard line, and after two stops by the defense, Aaron Rodgers found Lee for a five-yard touchdown pass to give the Packers a 7-0 lead.
Running back Ryan Torain picked up 11 yards on a screen pass on the Redskins next drive but Washington could not gain another first down and again punted. After passes of 13 and 10 yards, three straight Green Bay incompletions forced a punt.
Washington again failed to move the ball on its next drive and punted, and Green Bay took over.
Rodgers connected twice with receivers for a total of 23 yards after Jackson rushed for seven yards to open the series. After a false start, Rodgers connected with James Jones for 35 yards down the left sideline and a six yard pass to Jackson ended the quarter with Green Bay on the Redskins' 20-yard line leading 7-0.

Surprise stop on 4th. Let's see, a 2nd round pick for McNabb, 2-11 for 10 yards in 2nd half last week, runs out of bounds instead of burning time off clock, throws into the dirt. This week, misses 2 WIDE OPEN receivers on one series, ball goes through his hands on snap. This guys a 11 year veteran!!!???

Again, despise him or not, like him or not, we see the effect Haynesworth has on a defense he originally wasn't big on being a part of?
Again we see just how good an athlete and player the guy truly is. Without him playing most of the downs? Orapko the speed merchant gets run over by any decent run blocking scheme. He isn't strong enough. Haynesworth requires a double team, sometimes even a triple team to keep him blocked.
The guys Shanahan brought in to replace guys like Griffin just aren't as good. And Daniels is long in the tooth.
Does everybody see that yet? Probably not knowing this crowd.
LIke him or not when you don't have Haynesworth its Pearl Harbor day.

So it looked to me like the Skins defense started the game by playing off the receivers, giving them all 10 yard cushions. During the 2nd half though, it looked like they started playing a lot more man, jamming the receivers at the line, and it seems to be paying off. Packers didn't do much after their failed 4th down conversion goal line attempt.
One more thing, I just wish the refs would be consistent with their calls. Yes Chris Horton definitely pushed that GB player in the back on Banks' big kick return, BUT...on the punt where GB brought it back for big yardage, Byron Westbrook was clearly being held and it wasn't called.
Doesn't change anything anyway, but it'd be nice to see an evenly called game.

This team isn't good enough to squander turnovers in their opponents' territory, coming away with no points. Put Landry in the backfield and let him light up blitzing biotches.

kareem moore has been horrendous. also someone has to say it, landry has not had a good game. on the plus side, ive loved what lorenzo alexander has brought this year.
on offense, poor protection by the line and poor accuracy by mcnabb.
but its a work in progress and we are better than last year. need major help on the o-line, safety and wide receiver.

We've gone through this same approach for 10 years now and it's just not going to work. Sure, every 3 or 4 years you might go 9-7 or 10-6 and then get knocked out the first round. But you're just not going to be consistently competitive unless you build through the draft.

If the Redskins were smart, they would wait for Farve to get suspended by the league for D0ng Text-Gate, then trade McNabb to Minny (who is already all in this year having just traded for Moss and isn't about to hand the middle of the season over to Tavaris Jackson) for some kind of draft pick, and then pack it in the rest of this year. They're not getting above 6-10 either way.

Getting jobbed in our own stadium.
The over ruling official on the cooley interference was the same azz hat who failed to call blatant interference in the first half.

Kyle Shanahan....the master of throwing the long bomb to ancient Galloway when picking up a few yards to make the FG attempt easier would make sense...
Did it in the Texans game that caused them the win in Ot...now doing it again.
Watch the packers take the good field position to go score a TD
Shanahan only got the job because of nepotism

He's on the bench in lowly Oakland. No use beating a dead horse. Clearly McNabb given his many years of experience as a playoff QB was better even if Jason had stayed to be his understudy.
It would have been smarter if he had stayed.
And yes, they still need a lot of draft picks to recover from the recent past.

That's a good team the Skins beat, regardless of the weapons they lost to injury.
The Skins are, simply, who we thought they were/think they are. Between 7 and 9 wins. (Dare I push it to 8-to-10 based on today? Nahh . . .)
Can't understate the importance of winning the turnover battle.
And considerable props to McNabb, regardless of his faults.

Gift wrapped W, albeit ugly as hell, is still a W. Hooray for Skins decimating the Packers by injuries (including Clay Matthews, who was an ogre-like force constantly in the Skins backfield). Despite the fact that the Freight Torain couldn't get anything going solo (he is NOT a feature back) and the fact that the Skins have no run game whatsoever without Portis to help split carrie, they managed to win.
Good for them and good for the defense, which is returning to its top 10 form. McBouncePass is keeping the Skins in the hunt even though he is often erratic with his accuracy; the point is that unlike JC, he makes his throws when it counts (JC would never have made any of those deep throws).
The Skins O-Line is about to implode yet again...Lichtensteiger got exposed as a B-lister today, Silverback got hurt again, and Jammal Brown also got hurt. Let's hope and pray that they get healthy soon and that the depth on the O-Line (what depth?) manages to get the job done.
Posted by: Crunkenstein | October 10, 2010 4:51 PM | Report abuse
I'm confused. Should this 'Skins team be 5-0, or 0-5?
Delighted with the win. At half time I thought it would be a massacre.
Not the greatest performance; the Clay Matthews injury turned the game but the D was excellent throughout. Good moments on O from Armstrong, Moss, Cooley and Banks on returns.
Refereeing was terrible all day re- pass interference and holding by the Packers, who I think will go 3-1 against the East.
Jints looked decent today, from what I saw. Here's hoping the 49ers and Titans (please) can do us a favour.
Loving the early kick-offs here in Scotland! HTTR!

Yes there was a lot of luck involved, but when you improve the intelligence at qb and coach the luck tends to swing your way a bit more often. The team also settled down and made adjustments after a horrible first half by O, D and teams. But it isn't a coincidence that we grabbed the momentum when that freak Matthews went out.

COSIGN!
This is the NFC EAST not the AFC West. Can't have 6-2 295 lb Guards and expect to be able to pound the ball. Not run - POUND. Gotta be able to move your guy off the line, not just get an angle on him.
But - hey, a win is a win. Winning ugly against a good FB team like GB is nothing to be ashamed of.
Looks like a W in the win column to me.

Anyway...stop with the "No O-Line Depth"...
IF ANY TEAM LOSES THEIR STARTING RIGHT TACKLE AND STARTING LEFT TACKLE, THE WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO RUN THE BALL!!!
Posted by: rickyroge | October 10, 2010 4:58 PM | Report abuse
Your logic makes sense but for the fact that the team couldn't run the ball when Silverback and Brown were in...and that was for about 80% of the game (they got hurt late).
Still, the "Depth" did a commendable enough job, although I'd argue that they owe more thanks to the injured hammy of Clay Matthews

Anybody notice the Redskins seem more professional during the game?
Less flexing from LaRon, less ball spinning from Tana, more jsut flipping the ball to the ref after the play. It hasn't disappeared, but they do seem more professional.
AH92 was missed today... do not discount his absence.
Stole a win... but also had one stolen from them vs Texans. Net net, better to win an NFC game and lose an AFC game.
Bottom line, they found a way to win.

With Haynesworth back, hopefully not in the dog house for taking leave to be with his family, they should be able to at least top the run while getting a decent pass rush again.
But offensively, without Trent Williams ... they are going to have to scramble to put the line back together ... Hicks might have to go back to playing tackle with Dockery back at guard.

1) I hope Trent Williams and Brown are OK for the rest of the season.
2) Hard to evaluate Torain when he was meeting a flood of defenders in the backfield. The interior of our o-line was shockingly bad.
3) Fred Davis, are we not going to even try to use him?
4) Brandon Banks, I thought he was too small. I was so very wrong. My favourite play of his was last week, when he stiff armed a linebacker into the dirt.
Still, it does look like someone has brought their kid into work with them.
5) Why did we keep Roydell Williams rather than Thomas. At least Thomas can play special teams whilst not making any catches.
6) I know it has been said many times, but I just can't help but think about how good a pairing of Sean Taylor and Laron Landry could have been.
7) Greg Blache, do you see how useful Landry can be if you use his strengths rather than trying to ram a square peg into a round hole.

This feels great. We're 3-2 and 2-0 in the NFC East; Cowboys are losing 17-3 to the Titans, and Bryant just got injured and Romo is sputtering; Giants are 3-2, but we have the advantage in the division standings. Our O-Line needs major work after the injuries to Silverback and Brown - if our O-Line is healthy, we have a chance to win the division!
Up next is the Colts on Sunday night, so I hope we put up a good fight against Manning and bros!
Hail to the Redskins!

This redskin team will be solid and well coached, but it won't be flashy or win big. We now know games will be tight, but it is also evident that teams will be removing players - impact players - from the field and they won't be coming back to play.
So much for this "old" team mailing it in during teh second half and overtime. They were getting stronger the longer the game went on.
And to that mutt Clay Mathews - get a haircut, woman.

It's amazing to watch the complete idiots who post some of the DUMBEST comments during the game yet they have the nerve to tell others to learn about football. YOU DUMBASSES are the ones that need to look in the mirror and take your own advice because it's exactly why you are a fan - in some cases an uneducated fan that needs to wake up and learn a little more about football.
I challenge anyone on this board that says we win a game like today over the last two years under the inept coaching contingent and front office we had then.
Some of you are stupid you ought to just be outlawed from posting on these boards.
I'm not naming names - but YOU DUMBASSES need to get a clue. There was one comment on here today posting that nepotism was a problem - SHUT UP you idiot. That has to be the most assinine thing you can say. These coaches and front office INHERITED a mess created by the owner. Which means they are implementing systems on both sides of the ball with players that are NOT the right kind of personnel to run. They are inheriting some players who have no business playing in the schemes they want. I credit the Shanahans for finding ways to win albeit this year is more of an audition to see what players can work in the systems they have going forward.
Sure the 3-4 defense is giving up yards but case in point - iff they give up yards but not points and win - I'll take it. These players are working their asses off and the coaches are working with what they got right now. In some cases - they will get wins that may be pretty and in other cases - LIKE TODAY - ugly. And that was a stinker today but they found a way to win.
Rest assured you can bet the coaches and the front office are keeping an eye on the guys they want around and who they don't feel will be around here much longer.
Some of you whiners going on about Devin Thomas need to shut up. We don't have much on the receiving front and cutting him didn't help. But I'd rather have a player that actually cares about and wants to play. Oh yea we read Thomas's quotes about I've done everything and blah blah blah and they didn't let me get on the field. Yea - this from a fool that slept during a meeting. I don't care if it was a one time thing. Good riddance. Hope he catches on somewhere else. The Skins will find someone more productive.
Hats off to this team for fighting through it - hanging around and then allowing the opportunity to win. I'm sure of you who posted nothing but negativity will be like "ok we won but but but but but" SHUT UP. I said it before the year started - anything better than a 7-9 season will be a surprise. And I hope they do better than that record but just remember through the ugly wins and losses this year what this coaching staff had to INHERIT. If you can't see that then - maybe you need to become a little more educated.
HAIL

I'd buy that. I'd even go so far as suggesting they release them outright and promote younger players.
They might have to do that before next week just so they can promote one or two offensive tackles from the practice squad. Don't know how bad the injuries are to Brown and Williams, but I'm thinking we're going to be adding an offensive tackle.
But, right now, I just want to think about the win. The team played tough, tenacious football and the young players on defense are starting to assert themselves.

Laron Landry and his family can start planning their trip to wherever the Pro Bowl will be played this year, this guy is playing lights out. His interception in OT was key to the victory.
McNabb was off at times today and thrown around like a rag doll but I give him credit when the big play was needed he delivered. How many times during his tenure did JC deliver in crunch situations?
It's only a matter of time before BBanks takes a punt or kickoff to the house, finally someone in Burg/Gold who is fun and exciting to watch. Just keep on holding on to the ball!!(blockers stop blocking in the back!!)
You better eat your wheaties and buckle your chin strap when you play us, we're knocking MF's out of the game every week!

Randy Moss told Tom Brady his haircut made him look like a girl
By Chris Chase
Before he was traded to the Minnesota Vikings, Randy Moss(notes) got into a catfight with Tom Brady(notes) about, all of things, his facial hair.
According to Charley Casserly of CBS, Brady and Moss had a verbal altercation before the trade and that the pair had to be separated. During the spat, Brady told his receiver to shave his beard. Moss responded that Brady should cut his hair, because he looks like a girl.
Gentlemen, gentleman; both your follicle-stylings look awful. Brady telling Moss that his hair looks bad is like Creed telling Nickleback that they're lame. Takes one to know one.

As much as I'm glad that the Brokebacks are losing. I don't think they're our major competition in the East now. Giants have turned their play around here recently. We have Indy next week and I think they have Detroit. We better win next week.

No trading draft picks for a WR. Keeps our picks and build through the draft. If it takes a couple seasons to right the ship, so be it. Vinny and Danny took 10 years to put us here, I can wait two to get out of it. Small upside is we would have lost today's game last year.
Posted by: DaMoFo
Agreed. I just read that Bill Beligirl has had 24 draft picks over the last two years, 3 more than anyone else. That is how you rebuild a football team. That said, do we re-sign DMac or not? Rebuild completely or try to win while we are rebuilding? Tough call.

Belichick has been pretty open about the reason he wants a lot of draft picks: he figures fully half aren't going to pan out. It's like hedging a bet.
For an opposite view, try the Jets, who usually have very few picks when draft time rolls around.
Can't help but notice that Vinny's worst drafts were when he had a lot of picks. He did better with very few.

They need to get him some help. They have no RBs, no WR and apatchwork line. Can't believe he passed for 357 yards!!!!! And no real turnover. Wow!

Well I guess I am the typical DC fan. We saw Zorny's first year where they were sitting in the cat bird seat the first half of the season and then???
Its amazing to see this sort of victory and against a top-ranked NFC team. And the record of 3 wins 2 losses after all that has transpired.
But, its only five games. Yeah a couple of miracle finishes ... and beating Dallas the way they did was old-school Gibbs and Petitbone style. But let's face it, with a defense that is ranked 31st, that really can't stop the big play (and especially running plays) without Haynesworth ... just one guy? And an OL that seems like its barely holding its own ... because there really isn't any zone blocking based running game?
Yes the all-pro QB is making things happen somehow.
Still, its only five games. If this were the 10th or 11th ... then perhaps there wouldn't be this feeling that the other shoe is about to fall.

Allow me to interject right there that the previous two seasons we've had 'Top Ten' defenses and we see how many hills of beans that bought us.
The fundamental problem is gauging defenses by yards given up, or offenses by yards posted for that matter.
