Pete Kendall

Got a bunch of emails about him the last few weeks, and talked to some NFL people today (from organizations other than the Skins) who have been in contact witht he Jets. As I have suspected, they are not looking to move the valuable O Lineman now, despite his clashes with the organization.

He continues to practice with the first team and is playing well in camp and looks like a starter for them. It's awful tough to find quality linemen at this time of year. My best guess is maybe they try to find a half-decent guard off the scrap heat in a few weeks after the first round of cuts, but the trade market could be stale.

Thanks for the update, Jason!

We had an offensive line question that you as an Italian-American might be able to help with: what's the proper pronunciation of 'Pucillo'?

poo CHILL oh
or
poo CHEE low
or even
pyoo CHEE low

dcsween (MIA today) hates it when I refer to our current starting LG as 'Poochie,' but I started using it because I am guessing 'pooCHILLoh.' I continue using it to tick off sween.

Jasno, must be a TON easier on you working a home game than a road game, even a short trip like Nashville. Right? or do you do more just because it is so close?

Scrap heat! Man, if you can't take the heap, stay out of the laundry room...

jm, no doubt about it -- no better way for Soup to learn how to protect himself and the ball than to have him playing behind the Maginot Line.

LMGO Nate. I think he can handle it. Remember I was one of the first ones calling for JC last year and saying he was going to be good. Let's hope he doesn't prove me wrong. This year I am going with Rogers having a good year.

So is there any significance to the fact that everyone acted like there was a 9am deadline this morning for a Vick plea deal, but we haven't heard anything either way, from any party, on such a deal? Or was that deadline given false prominence by the media who want to keep the heat on this story?

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | August 17, 2007 9:58 PM | Report abuse

Curse the apparently evil Cyn Cyty, who went back and cleaned up all of Jasno's one-handed typos from the chat this afternoon.
There was a classic about cutting Soupy some clack that should have been reserved for posterity.

Do you ever get the feeling that, after a long post, Jasno ends up on the floor with the keyboard cable wrapped around his neck, barely able to free an arm to hit Enter?

Posted by: cload and daggar | August 17, 2007 10:02 PM | Report abuse

And jm, forgot to say I agree on Ocho-Cinco from the last post, that he is great to watch.

So here's a topic: who are your favorite players in the league to watch play, and why?

No kickers.

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | August 17, 2007 10:04 PM | Report abuse

ocho cinco has the best TD celebrations hands down.

cload, I forget, did you use another moniker up here before Jasno's epic 'cload and daggar' slipup?

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | August 17, 2007 09:51 PM

Nope, I've been lurking since day one; I considered posting, thought about posting, cancelled the occasional post, until that golden moment when Jasno, straight from the hand of god, bestowed the perfect moniker upon me, to unleash my random, and occasionally drunken, remarks loose upon the world.

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | August 17, 2007 10:08 PM | Report abuse

Nate, I heard that it wasn't a firm deadline. I've also heard that an announcement would be made this evening.

I don't have a favorite player but I do enjoy watching 85. I used to love Moss but not so much anymore. I even used to like TO when he used to do a better job of keeping his mental health issues hidden.

Are we talking about watching them play, or watching them celebrate after the play is over?
I'll stick to the former... LT is just so good; the way he accelerates is amazing. Same with Ocho Cinco. Portis had [and I hope shows again] an elusiveness combined with decent acceleration that could make you hold your breath whenever he got the ball.
Tom Brady walking to the line bleeds focus and intensity.
Ray Lewis pre-snap.
Sean Taylor, two steps away from the ballcarrier (or punter).
Santana behind the Cowpies' last man.

Great list, cload.

Jumping off for a bit to hang out with the missus without incessantly refreshing the blog. You fellers have fun up here.

I really do love this stupid blog, and I enjoy the heck out of the time we spend rapping.

Even if I spend waaaay too much time doing it, tend to go on and on as if everyone enjoys the sound of my own voice as much as I do, periodically digress like a drunk driver swerving off a cliff, needlessly exaggerate, am not anywhere near as funny as I'd like to be, add next to nothing to the actual football discussion, and basically conduct myself in a manner evocative of one Barney Fife, deputy sheriff of Mayberry.

P.S. I think Redcoat will be back after a totally justifiable cooling-down period. I dropped him a line today encouraging him to come back soon. Because we have a lot of trash talking to do! The damn Miami game is less than a month away!

At the beginning of last year, there was some question whether Dockery was starter material -- he was certainly considered the weak link on the line.
Unsurprisingly, he had a great year in his contract year.
Pretty Boy LLoyd got his money even though he had a year left on his 49er contract.

So tonight, a little over three hours ago, in honor of 4-12 being the 75,000th poster, the town of Oak Bluffs, on the island of Martha's Vineyard had a fireworks display. If you're wondering 4-12, they were spectacular.

But my question is this:

Why is the speed of sound so much slower than the speed of light? I mean, I know that light is something else, but sound is pretty damn cool in its own right. But it's slow as molasses compared to light.

From where I was sitting tonight, on the upstairs balcony of my parents' place, I was getting up to 3-mississippi before I heard what I saw.

Why come?

Posted by: MV Dame | August 18, 2007 12:38 AM | Report abuse

Who made that decision? And why? Is there a reason for it? Is there a reason against it? Would sound get more props if their speeds were reversed, and light would have to play second fiddle?

They actually were the same speed, until one night they got all liquored up and light challenged Sean Taylor to a race.
Light tore a hammie -- or a hemmie -- at 186,000 mps. Sean Taylor was running backwards at the time and saw the whole thing.

Way to go, Vinny.

"Gaither grew up in a football-mad household -- his mother is a self-described "overboard, die-hard Redskins fan," the type who would hang banners outside her house and honk her car horn after a win. Gaither, however, did not play the sport at an early age because he exceeded the height and weight restrictions of local youth leagues. He instead turned to basketball."

Posted by: The Crickets | August 18, 2007 2:14 AM | Report abuse

If Gaither turns out to be something, his not-being-selected-by-the-Skins will be the lead new item on the FO follies whine list up here.

A new poster boy for FO ineptitude.

As if we don't have enough of those flingin' flangin' posters up around here already.

But dude hasn't started a real game yet. For the moment I'm glad we still have that pick, and that we have shown the (relative) restraint which its retention indicates.

1. Improvement from O line
2. More progress from JC
3. Score
4. D to play solid again
5. Most important is to get all starters out without any injuries.

Base off of what I have seen so far. By the time we play the Pats we should be 5-1. The only team that we play that looks like we may lose so far is the Eagles.

the thing about taking a poster is to not write anything on it until you get to the game. and you have to pick the right moment to hold it up...and keep holding it up until the cameras can spot you. and you can be on teevee.

here's an idea for a sign: "hey danny, make like the trees you took out and leave!" or
"hey danny, can i be your nanny?"
"hey danny, no sugar before draft time"
"hey danny, you so fine, i mean your wife"

There is some NFL rule that you can't watch the game live if your county is outside of 75 miles from the home city and it's not a national broadcast.

Down here in Salisbury MD, they have to block it out. Why they don't for the Ravens though is beyond me since they are more than 75 miles away too.

I guess the redskins will be 16-0 this year and jason campbell will pass tom brady and peyton manning as the best qb in the NFL, sean taylor will become better than ronnie lott, london fletcher is the best lb in the league, carlos rogers will turn into deion sanders, shwan springs will play 16 games and the def line will get 60 sacks. You guys are all clueless, enjoy another 5-11 season and listening to another year of excuses and the coaching staff and players till saying how good the team is despite never winning. Hilarious but also pathetic, enjoy paying $30 for parking, $10 for water, $90 for a ticket and $20 for breathing air tonight to watch your garbage team's starting offense not score any points for the 6th straight preseason game and your starting defense look weak. You can also watch for which old, overrated bums get hurt and watch your turnstile offensive line let jason campbell get drilled a few more times. But you will get to watch a legitimate football team play(the steelers) and see a correctly run football franchise.

Cyndy,

Is the Wilbon article on the 'Skins coming out tomorrow? Maybe? Maybe?

Posted by: SCSkinsFan | August 18, 2007 2:50 PM | Report abuse

No doubt, McNabb looked good but the Panthers looked awful. It was as much McNabb as it was Carolina's woeful effort. Is the Iggles offense that much better than the Skins'? I don't think so. The Skins are better equipped this year to defend LJ Smith. Reggie Brown? Kevin Curtis? Greg Lewis? Those names don't strike fear in the hearts of DBs. I fear the Texas team more because it has more offensive weapons.

Mark down right now. If CP is healthy, the Skins win the NFC East with a 10-6 record. The D is going to win a couple this year.

LH, 10-6? The Skins need to sign their 2nd,3rd and 4th round picks.
Lack of depth will kill them. The 07 draft gave them one player who will help them. The 06 draft gave them 2. Last week you saw the lack of depth on the o-line. Campbell will not last one quarter of the season. Burnell/Collins 4-12!

STILL LOOKS TO ME LIKE BRUNELL -> FALCONS. Harrington's video on NFL.com LOOKS SCARY if you are a Falcons fan or a coach. NO TRADES JASON? STALE? ARE YOU SURE?

If Collins pans out again watch Brunell get dealt. HE KNOWS he starts as soon as he walks through the door.

On the topic of DEPTH.

CORNERBACK: I think Westbrook is a keeper. Surprisingly improved with free agent pick ups. But injuries could cripple.
DL : Buzzbee, good year by Carter, former draft picks Montgomery and Golston step up. Evans continues to improve. Better than expected.

SAFETY: BONUS, we note that former draft pick DOUGHTY is now #2 behind Taylor on the Skins depth chart ahead of Stoutmire. Plenty of excellent depth. BEST IN NFL.

OL: In spite of plenty of free agent pickups they still do not have the depth required. Might end up working out Wade returning to tackle + surprising rookie Tackle Heyer. Depth at Guard will continue to be an issue. Lefotu apparently has yet to step up. Here is where I see trading Brunell having potential.

WR: STILL NO #2 (Other than James Thrash). Will the coaches take the risk and pick up Chiefs running back Priest Holmes and convert him to WR?

RB: Plenty of depth here. Betts, Portis, Rock, Mason, Blaylock.

FB/TE/H-BACK : Schmitt, Sellers, Yoder
Cooley (If Cooley goes down its a crippling
loss.

QB: Campbell, Collins, and Carson. Brunell -> Falcons.
Not deep at all. Need young QBs.

LINEBACKERS: Plenty of depth with Rocky Mac stepping up. HB Blades the new MLB in training. Fletcher finally replaces Antonio Pierce.

NFC East.

1. Eagles. (McNabb looks awesome and he has a new wide out.)
2. (tie) Cowboys
2. Redskins
3. Giants.

BRUNELL -> FALCONS

Falcons' Shockley scheduled for MRI to assess sprained knee
Associated Press
ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. -- Falcons third-string quarterback D.J. Shockley was carted off the field with 4 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter after spraining his left knee in Atlanta's 13-10 exhibition game win over the Buffalo Bills on Friday.

Falcons coach Bobby Petrino said Shockley will have an MRI exam on Sunday to asses the severity of the injury.

"It didn't look good," Petrino said. "I didn't like the way he looked on the field."

Shockley, a 2006 seventh-round draft pick, was hurt after attempting to cut to the inside of the field on a 10-yard scramble. Shockley's right foot slipped when he planted it at the Buffalo 15-yard line, causing his left leg to twist awkwardly before he was tackled by linebacker Josh Stamer.

Shockley was 4-of-5 for 46 yards passing and added 18 yards rushing on three carries. He was replaced by second-stringer Chris Redman.

LH - agree on your take of the Eagles wr's but I would still take any of their guys over what we have currently at #2. The reason their O is so good is the way they spread the ball around and the one guy you failed to mention - Westbrook. We never seem to have an answer for that guy.

periculum - Please man give it a rest on trading Brunell. The guy can not play and you seem to be the only one who has not yet realized it. I don't think Kelly Holcomb is good but he is a much better option in a trade. Hell they could probably find a better QB just walking the streets of downtown Atlanta.

DEAR CDubb,

THE SF 49'er fans said just what you are about our man Brandon "I am the #2 WR" Lloyd. They laughed with relief and derision as their team dealt him away.

Brunell isn't even close to a Lloyd. The Atlanta fans are saying similar things. But the coaches aren't yet. And Harrington really sucks. He throws INTs every time he goes long. At least with Brunell they are incompletions.

REMEMBER R.C. THEILMANN? SKINS GOT HIM FROM THE FALCONS. THAT"S WHAT THEY NEED AT THIS POINT. I think there is a chance Gibbs/Bugel will get their OG. And the Skins OL will get healed. Either Blalock or Forney. Gibbs has done this sort of deal in the past. I don't see why he wouldn't now to get Brunell a starters job.

But I admit this preseason game will tell the tale. The Falcons have a desperate need. The Skins must now decide they do too.

I still think that getting Priest Holmes and reuniting him with Al Saunders might be worth while. If he wants to experiment why not try Holmes as a wide out? His body may not be able to take the pounding at RB, but at wide out? Not playing every down? Maybe he could do it. Let's face it, Holmes and Thrash may be much better than the younger, less motivated Lloyd and Randle El.

can we trade periculum and brunell to atlanta?

Posted by: Anonymous | August 18, 2007 5:44 PM | Report abuse

Tonights goals should be
1. Improvement from O line
2. More progress from JC
3. Score
4. D to play solid again
5. Most important is to get all starters out without any injuries.

I saw very little of the Eagles game yesterday, but it was enough to alleviate most of the concern I had over the Ravens debacle. How well the Iggles do is probably a function of how healthy the following players get/stay during the season. Quite a few important offensive starters (best OL, starting TE, starting QB) are iffy to potentially doubtful for large chunks of the season.

6. Better special teams play especially FG kicking.
7. Be able to run the ball. (OL must 'sync', come together?)
8. Progress from backup QBs.

"Base off of what I have seen so far. By the time we play the Pats we should be 5-1."

That part of the season, 5 games, is when the Skins hit a bunch of good teams. Could be the critical part.

Patriots
Jets
Eagles
Cowboys
Buccaneers.
