No salary cap next season means cya clinton!

Posted by: hillb03 | December 8, 2009 6:06 PM | Report abuse

we have to replace samuels and Thomas

Maybe Collins, sellars, fletch, betts, daniels

There could b a lot of slots to fill, based on age

Doesn't make ANY sense to get rid of portis or Campbell

Amazing that 65% think we will get rid of portis and I bet its the same 65% that think portis and snyder are best buddies and it fits right into the bell curve

Posted by: pabrian2003 | December 8, 2009 6:13 PM | Report abuse

Anyone who wants to keep Portis must be a Dan clone. Only someone who thinks like Dan would want to keep Portis.

Posted by: Skins930 | December 8, 2009 6:16 PM | Report abuse

Let me tell you who will never ever be held accountable for anything under this regime:

1)Clinton Portis
2)Albert hayneworth
3)Laron Landry
4)DeAngelo Hall

The highest-paid and highest-picked "stars" on the team will never be held accountable for anything.

Posted by: p1funk

Well, put Chris Cooley in there too. We talk about acountability. What did the players do that you named that warranted them being held accountable. And just don't tell me about Portis practicing either.

Posted by: dcwun | December 8, 2009 5:16 PM | Report abuse

First, I did not say that all those players necessarily needed to be held accountable for failing at something. I was making a more general statement.

Second, if you want to get into specifics. Laron Landry should be benched. Chris Horton got benched for one bad play. Laron Landry has been atrocious all year long, missing tackles and blowing coverages. And not even a word of criticism from a coach that we are aware of.

It took Carlos Rogers about 4 years to finally get benched for getting beaten the same way. 12 games into the season Landry is back there making the same mistakes. Do we have to sit through 3 more years of Landry's atrocious tackling and blown coverages before something happens?

And yeah, let's talk about Portis. Portis played like crap and hasn't practiced all year. And yet it's been made very clear that he has an inalienable right to start. Why? Sherman Smith basically came out and said that Portis' lack of practice has hurt the running game. If we weren't naming names or teams, and I described the Portis situation to you, you would call it favortism and a double-standard. Seriously, how many other players on the team get to be gimpy, ineffective, sit out of practice and STILL have a monopoly and stranglehold on a starting position?

Like Rock cartwright said: "He's the big money guy."

Poll question -

No.

Why would they cut him? Most of his salary is guaranteed for next year.

They can draft a young back and platoon them together.

If they're already paying him, they may as well get something from him.

John Corcoran says this team is better than you think...

"Then there’s Jim Zorn. I’ll say it now—Jim Zorn deserves to be considered to coach the Redskins next year. Why? Because the team is playing much better on offense, and because he has kept the team from quitting. The Redskins didn’t mail it in against the Saints, they hit hard, played hard, should have won."

Posted by: p1funk | December 8, 2009 6:24 PM | Report abuse

Good point, I hadn't really thought of it like that. This works only if we can "platoon him" with a young back (as someone else said) or mix him in with some of the guys stepping up right now like Ganther. Or he goes back into beast mode. Win/win/win, the money's already gone.

Posted by: RomoShortball | December 8, 2009 6:34 PM | Report abuse

Please, please say Portis is done. I am tired of his act, and he lost one step years ago when he bulked up to try to run between the tackles for GibbsII. This year he looks like he lost another step. I swear, it looked like he was in slow motion sometimes as he repeatedly fell down behind the line scrimmage.

And yeah, for all you Portis slurpers out there, the Oline stinks. But just try and tell me ANYONE else doesn't look better this season behind the same line. Betts? Rock? Freakin' GANTHER?

Portis is done. Friendship to Snyder notwithstanding.

Posted by: hithere1 | December 8, 2009 6:38 PM | Report abuse

F the money. Cut Portis now. Snyder has wasted money on worse.

Posted by: hithere1 | December 8, 2009 6:40 PM | Report abuse

Actually, this "Portis is here no matter what" is a double edged sword...for Portis. If Sherman Smith or Zorn can nut up and tell him, "look, you are on this team in '10 for sure, but you do it our way or you sit." I too would hope that 26's pridefulness would use this as motivation to show everyone he's still got it. If not and he sits, oh well it was worth a try, someone who can produce gets a shot.

Makes no difference fiscally to mgt, but to Portis it would mean he's finished.

Posted by: TheCork | December 8, 2009 6:28 PM

Pretty sure you are just posting an article and not making a statement-

What’s wrong with this team...Coming in right behind Danny and Vinny is Zorn. Even with his diminished role he has found a way to interfere just enough to contribute to the last 3 losses.

He gets Zero credit for the improved play of the O, that goes to Sherm. He gets 100% of the blame for playing for FG's week after week and the ineffectiveness of the O in the redzone.

This team hasn't quit because the energy is coming from players finally getting a chance and not sitting behind the big money guys.

Posted by: Diesel44 | December 8, 2009 6:42 PM | Report abuse

Want to correct what REDDMV wrote about me in regard to LL. I said he was the best SS in the game when someone else had his back. There aren't any other safties on the squad capable of playing FS. We need to draft one, and I'm pimping for ERIC BERRY. There won't BE any LT available worth a franchise tag left in the draft in '10 by pick number five(ours). If there is grab him. If not, why draft projects like RINEHART just to say we need a fix for the o-line? The great tackle draft is gone. GET a LT in free agency not in the draft. Pick in the second round of the draft for a good RT, a JON JANSEN type who was solid not spectacular, and a guard in the fourth or fifth round, preferably a LG. Use the last pick for the best available.

Meanwhile sign the best free agent K, OLB and CB.

DRAFT:

#1 ERIC BERRY - FS
#2 RT(thirty-seventh overall).
#4 OT
#5 LG
#7 LB or Best available player.

FA:

Best LT, K, OLB, and CB. Keep JONES for back-up LT.

It will be an uncapped year so DAN can run wild. Resign ROCKY McINTOSH for three, and JASON CAMPBELL two-year, incentive-laden contract.

Put ORAKPO on the line where he belongs. Move MOORE to teams solely. Cut SMOOT if his contract allows it, WYNN, and HOLMES. Leave PORTIS to his own devices. I think he wants out of WASHINGTON. Keep BETTS and GANTHER

Why do some of you all have bleeding hearts for some of these guys?

Portis is older, run down but PAID...

and if you think Quintan Ganther and Rock Cartwright are starting tailbacks, you're delusional. I am not saying they should'nt get a shot BUT c'mon what defense will be scared of Quintan Ganther? He aight...BUT

I'm tired of inferior talent....YES, we need to get some young, hungry players on the cheap BUT

We have no DeSean Jackson, who's a threat to score everytime he touches the ball!!!

We have some young talent but we don't need to keep "has been's" for nostalgia purposes...

ALTHOUGH, I CAN SEE SNYDER KEEPING PORTIS SO HE COULD BREAK RIGGINS' RECORD JUST TO BE SPITEFUL.

Disagree on Moore. Yes he made some mistakes. Before he is relegated to Teams play only find out if he can play FS. What do the Skins have to lose, except a few more games to find out what it has in it's young players.

It was not long ago when many were calling for Tryon to be cut. Let's see on Moore knowing the young players make mistakes.

This is why Zorn should be fired! We got all that spin that he couldn't figure it out...he was immature...doesn't know the pro game...doesn't put the time in.

Devin Thomas looks like he wants to score on every play. ARE looks to go down on every play.

What can the guy do whem completely healthy? Let's assume the Redskins get a new coach - a real disciplinarian that runs Portis thru the ringer and makes him work for the job. How good could the guy be if he actually had to work for it? He's being paid a lot of money - guaranteed money - and I think the team will give him a chance. If he shows up at mini-camp out of shape and overweight they will have their answers, but maybe the guy can get it together...

The random factor here is Portis' competitiveness. Will it be enough to drive him to really, really get in shape in the offseason? I dunno. As some have pointed out, he is a great blocker and that set of skills has not diminished. Maybe there is a spot for him at 3rd down running back, or short yardage back, or something along those lines. I just hope the next head coach levies heavy expectations on him.

He's the best in the league at picking up the blitz from RB spot.

Unfortunately to be a 3rd down back you need to catch the ball out of the backfield and possess some speed. He's lacking in those two categories.

Short Yardage? Not this year.

I hope I'm wrong and he becomes the 2010 comeback player of the year but I just think all his carries have caught up to him and he doesn't have any tread left on those tires.

CP had a really bad head injury and I am glad he is shut down.

How will that hit affect his play in the future? Does he still hit the hole like the old CP (my opinion is the bone spurs affected his play this year)? Will his blocking be as fierce as before the injury?

Maybe he should seriously consider retirement and the rest of his life. Could be a win/win situation for him and Dan.

You must be talking about those inconsistent fools. The ones who always blame Jason Campbells struggles on learning new systems, no wrs, no offensive linemen.

But when Clinton Portis struggles ? He doesn't have it anymore, yet if anything he has been our most consistent offensive threat since I can remember.

Is anybody surprised that this current streak of games where the Redskins have played better coincides with CP not being around? The guy is a clubhouse cancer and becuase he's the owner's favorite, he gets away with things that most all others on the team wouldn't - the majority of his teamates resent him for it. I don't wish ill will on anybody, but I hope we've seen the last of #26 in the burgandy and gold.

Yes, and good riddance - he's a Danny suck-up and a slacker. Sure, he had his great times, but he doesn't practice, even when healthy, so he does little to build the confidence of the offense during the week, and with his running style, the couple of steps that he's lost are terminal wrt his utility.

Landry sucks. He gets burned WEEKLY and double moves and can't tackle to save his life. He wouldn't even start on any other team in the NFL.

The could easily go with Horton, Moore, and Doughty and be fine. Horton and Doughty would be starters on most teams, you can't say that for Landry.

Portis has had some remarkable games for the skins, but the last few years with an iffy front line he has a few run to daylight gains, but not many.

Work on getting a top notch offensive line and that should be your focus, but with Danny boy who knows.

I know St. Joe Gibbs is in the Hall of Fame, for what he did 1981-1992. I know how great of a coach he was (not the last time though). But...he was like Michael Jordan when it came to selecting players.

Gibbs selected Portis. He didn't just trade for him, he TRADED A FUTURE HALL OF FAME CB (Champ) AND A #1 PICK to get him.
Not popular here, but Gibbs fault.

Gibbs TRADED 3 PICKS to land Campbell, a QB (not totally his fault) that has yet to be an All Pro.
Not popular here, but Gibbs fault.

Gibbs selected the kicker cut on yesterday.
Not popular here, but Gibbs fault.

Gibbs brought in an overpriced Randle-El, who is ok, but notice the Steelers didn't beg him to stay BECAUSE THEY DRAFTED Santonio Holmes to replace him when Gibbs could have done the same - for less $. Holmes is bigger, faster, cheaper and better. SB MVP in January.
Not popular here, but Gibbs fault.

Gibbs drafted Landry, who can't cover me.
Not popular here, but Gibbs fault.

What I do credit Gibbs for is knowing when to depart. He's twice gotten paid getting into a lifeboat as the Titanic was about to hit an iceberg. Notice I said about to hit it.

IF they can get a draft pick (ANY draft pick) for him in a trade.....the Redskins should MAKE that deal NOW!!!
But that would put his "new" team on the hook for his *owed* salary next year, right?! THAT alone might scare off teams.

But since he is "currently" INJURED, maybe the team and the league can "negotiate" a LESSER injury settlement $$$$ and just cut/waive his sorry @SS.

We all know portis is done!!! but its the money thats running the show. Kareem moore, Horton they cant make mistakes or they get benched. If u let them get expereince without looking over there shoulders then maybe they can make some thingss happen .. I like moore he can hit and dont give up home run Bombs. yea he got stripped what DB hasnt in the league... Landry is a nice playe rbut out of position. Why cant the skins have two runnin backs everybody else has 2 BYe Portis Goodbye u done man... gaither and Rock been running hard and u can see the speed burst instea dof portis tyring to find a lineman to hold on too to find a hole

All you people need to stop it - Portis is not going anywhere - As a token of Mr. Snyder appreciation of his loyalty to him and vice versa Mr. Synder is thinking about extending Portis' contract to 2012 , he's only 28, very productive and tells everything that goes on in practice to Mr. Snyder. That's the type of character player we need in our organization as far as Landry and Rogers they are both true redskins and will be here for years to come so you so called skins fans need to shut your pie holes...you are not the ones running the business.

Personally I hope to see Betts back, would love to see them nab Toby Gerhart or Mark Ingram in the draft, and keep Rock and Ganther would be fine in the mix too. Betts has always impressed me, is much quicker to hit the hole and get through the Dline, and he doesn't just fall down when someone touches him. Gerhart/Ingram with Betts or Rock would be a nice change of pace ala Riggins and Joe Washington. Then spend the rest of your draft picks on O Line - and maybe even trade a Cooley (as much as I like him) for an O Lineman and a draft pick. Trade Portis for a pick. Keep Campbell. He's going to be the most sought after QB in free agency this offseason.

blah, blah, blah....just more of the same nonsense. Dumb poll, writing is on the wall for CP. He had a nice run, that's it.

I still remember Portis dragging the Redskins into the playoffs on his back.

It is sad the way RBs decline. I hope he walks away from the game so he doesnt get more banged up to the point he cant enjoy the rest of his life.

Portis doesn't seem all that sad about the prospect of leaving and no surprise. He got his money, and he'll never be "great" here or win a Superbowl, so why not leave.

It kills me how all the media gurus want to be the first to announce Portis is done. I hope he laughs his ass off all the way through training camp and comes back more lean and mean than ever.

Sure, the team might want to think of the future at RB, but anyone claiming this is the biggest problem needs a sanity check!

We have no clue about the QB, the OL is a shambles, Fletcher won't live forever, there's some worthless lard in the secondary (are you listening, Rogers and Smoot?), we have a PK who apparently has a big leg but is totally unproven in the NFL, we're almost dead last in return yardage...but let's get rid of Clinton. I want what ya'll are having!

Portis always plays hard in games. Most running backs that take pride in pass protection blocking the Portis does are hard workers. With that being said Portis should not have been on the field if he could not practice. If you're consistantly too hurt to practice you're too hurt to play in the game. It hurts him and the team. As much as I like Portis he probably has approached his expiration date. He had a fairly big year last year finishing in the top 10 in rushing yards in the NFL. Running back more than any other position in the league is one where a player goes from superstar to average/role player in the blink of an eye. A couple of years after Shaun Alexander had his monster 1800+ rushing season he was struggling to stay in the league and is currently out of the league. Edgerrin James went from Star RB to role player in the blink of an eye. I really think we need to recognize that and move on or make the position a platoon one with a younger player like the Ravens are doing with Rice and McGahee.

Keep Campbell
Draft a stud LT with first pick
Draft 2 more offensive lineman
Drop Portis
Run with Cartright, Betts, Ganther, others
Secondary needs would be inside LB (LF is getting old but is still very good) and CB in case we drop Rogers.
Hopefully new kicker will prove to be good
