Portis, Zorn Broadcast the Injury News

Dan Steinberg listened so you don't have to and learned the following about Clinton Portis' knee injury, which he described during his weekly appearance on John Thompson's radio show as a second-degree MCL sprain:

The good news? "I had 15 injuries two weeks ago," Portis said. "Now I've only got one."
The bad news? "Right now I can't straighten it out," he said of his left leg. "I just started bending it today. So hopefully by the end of the week. We've got five days, so hopefully I'll be ready."

Will he play Sunday? Steinberg's synopsis:

He said the pain increased on Thursday night and Friday, leading to another examination and the sprain diagnosis. He said he thought he could help the team even if he wasn't the main focal point of the offense merely by being on the field and forcing the Cowboys to account for him, but he also said he wouldn't put himself out there just for the sake of being out there.

We'll see what the week brings. Go to the Sports Bog for the full report (including Portis' classic line on the election of Barack Obama and his "Lambo.").

On Jim Zorn's radio show, Steinberg says the coach talked about Ladell Betts, Portis and their status for Sunday (among other things):

"He's probably in a little bit better position to be active as the week goes on [vs. Portis]. He is nowhere 100 percent yet, but I think he looks like he's gonna participate in practice, where Clinton won't participate in practice for the first couple days. It's kind of a mixed bag right now. We're just trying to get our guys ready."

Sit Portis so he can get well. If we can't beat Dallas without him, well. We won't be first in the NFC East.

The Lambo line is actually from Young Jeezy, but I'm sure that everybody knows that.

1: Predictification: D.C Redskins-Americans 27 Dallas Cowlosers 0

2: If my predictification does not come to pass:

I personally believe that D.C. Redskins-Americans are unable to do so because, uh, some, uh people out there in our offensive line that don't have maps, and, uh, I believe that our, ah, education, like such as South Africa, and the Iraq and everywhere like such as, and I believe that they should, uh, our education over here in the U.S. should help the offensive line D.C. We at least need the threat of Portis. I wouldn't give him 25 carries or anything, but a reduced load and mixing in Betts/Alexander/Cartwright will help. I hate having to rotate that many backs in this game, but I don't see much choice. A loss here (and bear in mind Philly has Cincy this week) and we could be looking at a three way tie for 2nd in the division. We need separation in the playoff chase and the only way to get it is to WIN THIS GAME!

Plus I would just love to jam the stake in Dallas' collective heart, ending their season. That would be beautiful...

I guess this means we can look forward to Alexander running the wrong routes on Sunday.

Wow, I have been away for a while but this is a major bummer.

I think the best school of thought is what stumped says: let's go out and grind out something w/o CP, certainly if the alternative is crushing the guy before he even gets close to the dreaded 370. Plus, as stumped reminds us, we are probably not going to catch the Giants, so this is more about building a solid 2nd half anyway -let young uns carry the day hopefully.

Posted by: zornskins2 | November 11, 2008 7:26 PM | Report abuse

I still want to catch the Giants.

Why?

I'll tell you why.

Posted by: freakzilla | November 11, 2008 7:31 PM | Report abuse

Portis is obviously a major part of the offense. But to beat dal, it'll be the DEFENSE that needs to deliver.

Is Portis the difference maker vs dal?

CP's rushing yards vs dal since 2005:
84yds -> 22 points
36yds -> 23 points
104yds -> 27 points
121yds -> 26 points

81 carries for 341 yds is 4.2 a carry

Good numbers, not overwhelming. We won 3 games and were in position to win the other (we were in the red zone, down 5, with under 2min to go).

We don't need CP to win, but we're obviously a better team with him

Posted by: zcezcest1 | November 11, 2008 7:38 PM | Report abuse

We need mistake free football from our bestest, healdest players. That's all it will take to beat Dallas.

Will Romo be rusty?

Play Landry at strong safety and see if LaRon can knock his rust off, or make him suddenly get interested in selling insurance or cars or something.

Posted by: _Stumped_1 | November 11, 2008 7:46 PM | Report abuse

catching the jints is going to be tough, but they've also used up a few lucky charms along the way.

Their schedule ther rest of the way?
Ravens, Cards, Redskins, philly, dal, Panthers, Vikes

That's 6-3 (3 teams) 5-4 (3 teams) and 7-2 (1 team)

So yes, the jints can be caught, especially if we beat them in DC because then we win the tie break.

Posted by: zcezcest1 | November 11, 2008 7:47 PM | Report abuse

zcezcest1 -- I agree with you, the Skins can definitely beat the 'Boys without Portis on the field. We do need some running game, but I don't think that'll be all that difficult as long as Zorn doesn't let himself be stuck in the rut of the same calls over and over again. CP is a large part of the Skins' ability to run when the defense knows where the play is going, and still be successful, but without him, the Skins will need to be a bit more unpredictable.

And that probably won't be difficult without CP, since Zorn has never called a game without him. The 'Boys won't really know what to expect when.

Posted by: craig2 | November 11, 2008 7:49 PM | Report abuse

We'll need some kick @ass game plans for Dallas, NY and Baltimore.

(So why not Philly you ask? I dunno, I guess I don't think we need to get so cute with them or the 49ers, Shehawks, or Tiggers.)

Posted by: _Stumped_1 | November 11, 2008 8:00 PM | Report abuse

The jints are 8-1. They've played 5 games against teams with a combined record of 10-35 (Browns, Bengals, SF, Stl, Sea).

Combined record of all the jints opponents to date:
32-49
Combined record of teams still to come:
40-23

Posted by: zcezcest1 | November 11, 2008 8:08 PM | Report abuse

for us, its 3 weak teams remaining, combined record:
5-22

and 4 strong teams, combined record:
24-12

Combined record of our opponents to date:
39-42

Posted by: zcezcest1 | November 11, 2008 8:14 PM | Report abuse

Both philly and dal play 4 teams that are 6-3 or better the rest of the way, + each other. They each also have 2 weak teams left to play

Posted by: zcezcest1 | November 11, 2008 8:17 PM | Report abuse

Tampa Bay and Atlanta are also 6-3. They play each other once more.

ATL's schedule includes a bunch of teams in the middle -- Saints, Broncos, Chargers and Vikes. One weak team, StL and one elite team, Carolina.

Tampa's schedule includes Vikes, Saints and Chargers. 2 gimmes in Oak and Det. Plus Carolina.

Carolina, at 7-2, has the 3rd best record in the league. Their schedule includes only 1 gimme at DET this week. Otherwise, its ATL, TB and the jints, plus GB, Denver and the Saints

Posted by: zcezcest1 | November 11, 2008 8:26 PM | Report abuse

True sess, but the Gints are a very good team. The have only lost to Cleveland. Elisha threw 3 picks to the Browns 2 TDs, one pick was returned for a TD.

The simplest way to put it is like this:

The Giants play 1 bottom feeder.
The Skins play 3 bottom feeders.
Those other two NFC East teams play 2 bottom feeders.

Now let's go play each game Suddenly, Mediumly and with straight pockets.

Hail.

Posted by: _Stumped_1 | November 11, 2008 8:27 PM | Report abuse

based on schedules, I'd have to say us and TB have the most favorable schedule among the 6-3 or better teams.

Already mentioned dal and philly, there are 2 other 5-4 teams.

The 5-4 Bears play only 1 more game against a team with a winning record (the Vikes at 5-4), so they should win their division. The Vikes, currently tied with the Bears, should drop like a rock, as they play 5 games against teams with 6 or more wins.

The 4-5 teams, GB and the Saints, both have enough tough games left to make it unlikely that they'll get to 9 wins, let alone 10.

Not to bring up McMullen again, but I am just wondering why the Ravens did not sign him, being that he is so good:

McALISTER, LANDRY LAND ON IR
Posted by Mike Florio on November 11, 2008, 4:36 p.m. EST
As expected, the Baltimore Ravens have placed cornerback Chris McAlister and safety Dawan Landry on injured reserve, according to Aaron Wilson of the Carroll County Times.

Per Wilson, linebacker Robert McCune and wide receiver Marcus Maxwell have been signed to assume the vacated roster spots.

Wilson also says that McAlister underwent knee surgery on Monday in Coral Gables, Florida.

Posted by: Curzon417 | November 11, 2008 8:58 PM | Report abuse

So after all that, here's what it looks like to me. GB and Minn are out, the Bears win that division. AZ is a lock in the west and the rest of the west is already toast

That leaves 7 teams and 4 spots. The top 2 teams, the jints and Carolina, appear to have the toughest schedules -- meaning they could come back to the pack. Skins and TB appear to have the easiest schedules.

ATL is interesting, as they play a lot of games against .500 teams. They can get to 11 wins without beating any of the better teams the rest of the way. If they're able to beat the .500 teams consistently, they'll make the playoffs.

As for our NFC East competitors, dal and philly, the road looks pretty tough for both of them. One of them might make it to 10-6, but the road is tough.

Posted by: dealer1 | November 11, 2008 9:14 PM | Report abuse

Seems like Car, TB and ATL should all win 10 or more games.

Car gets there by beating DET and 2 of 3 vs GB, Den and NO (or upsetting the jints)

ATL gets there by beating StL and 3 of 4 vs Saints, Den, SD and Vikes

TB gets there by beating Oak and Det plus 2 of 3 vs Saints, Chargers, Vikes

Plus they each play each other, if they split those games, its 11 wins for each team.

Seems like it'd be very helpful to the Skins if ATL or TB started to gag.

Liking my FF team this week. On average, teams score about 80-85 a game. My starters this week avg almost 100. But it should be above avg this week. My 7 position guys play Det(x2), Jax, Sea, Hou, Indy and KC.

Of course, I've gotten bitten a few times by the massive game from the other side. 4 guys have had their top game vs me so far. Turner, Romo, Steven Jackson and Thomas Jones all went huge against me. This week, I'm mostly worried about Favre and Ronnie Brown (vs Oak) going off.

But even if I get a W, someone still needs to knock off Nate.

Horrible writing as it relates to properly quoting the players and coaches translating from the microphone interview in the Article about Hall and Portis co-authoried by JLa and Jreid.

I doubt either the player or the coach said these things the way the paper published them. Poor job by the editor letting them through. Lack of professionalism by the writers as well. Is the online version even edited?

"I've never been around a great corner that didn't take risks. You can't play it safe all the time, but you can't throw all your money it at one time either."

"But as far as what happened in the past and what people [in the media] say about him, I don't know if that's stuff true or not. But I do know that he's in our locker room right now, and you have to give him a chance to fit in. I think he will."

I's like after all of the bad crap that's happened to them this season leave it to the Redskins to pull them out of it...Reminds me of the Giants game last season (saved their season) I see the Cowboys gettin lucky in this one due to the absence of Portis and Zorn's conservative play calling (dinking and dunking or run) 34-21 Plus we were the underdogs the first game in Dallas..now it's opposite really.. Dallas will try o save their season...Upset alert!! :(

Minus CP, this offense becomes one dimensional if Betts is out as well. No way that SA or Rock is able to establish a power running game against Dallas. If we are forced to pass, then we're also at a disadvantage by not having CP or Betts to pass protect or catch swing passes. Cooley figures to be a big factor on Sunday if we want to move the chains.

The DEFENSE is going to have to come up big in this game and give the Skins offense a shortfield. Our defense has been solid, but only has forced 8 TO's! "Hands of Stone" Rogers needs to hang on to balls that he gets his hands on as do the other DB's. Romo is likely to be rusty and to put up some risky throws that we need to be able to make plays on Sunday.
