Portis goes over 100 yards

Redskins running back Clinton Portis posted his first 100-yard game of the season -- though nearly three-quarters of his production came on one play.

Portis carried 15 times for 109 yards in Sunday's 14-6 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, his first 100-yard game since Nov. 23, 2008, when he ran 29 times for 143 yards in a victory over Seattle. That game, though, was typical Portis grind-it-out production; his longest carry was 20 yards.

Sunday, on the Redskins' second possession of the third quarter, Portis took a handoff from quarterback Todd Collins -- who replaced starter Jason Campbell -- and ran off left tackle for 78 yards. The run, which was opened up downfield by fullback Mike Sellers, was the longest of Portis's eight-year career, and it gave the Redskins first and goal from the Kansas City 10.

"Clinton had the big run," Collins said. "And then we couldn't put anything together on third downs and continue drives."

The three plays that followed were incompletions from Collins, and the Redskins settled for the second of two Shaun Suisham field goals.

Portis did not make himself available for comment after the game. He averaged 2.2 yards on his other 14 carries, and he lost his first fumble of the year on the Redskins' first possession.

The 78-yard run eclipsed his previous long of 65 yards, which came Oct. 5, 2003 at Kansas City when Portis was still with the Denver Broncos. Portis's longest carry with Washington had been a 64-yard touchdown run on the first time he touched the ball as a Redskin -- Sept. 12, 2004 against Tampa Bay.

First, which is something this team won't see in a while unless it's the first pick in the draft.

cant believe it were the worst team in the league in my opinion and what makes it worse is snyder will never hire a gm which would at least get us started on the right path...were doomed

I don't care. He had one long run and the rest were 2 yards per carry. He's old and his days are long behind him. Time to get a new RB, and QB, and Oline, and new recievers.

One quick thing in which it hasn't been mentioned before: F Tom Brady, Bill Belichick and everyone associated with the New England Patriots.

This is an F'ing in perpetuity, and what reminded me to make mention of it today was the Pats' no-class running-up-of-the-score against a lesser team, which hearkened back to that no-class running-up-of-the-score against Joe Gibbs' Redskins two years ago.

Well last week I said the Redskins stink.
This week..the Redskins stink even more.
They should be thankful that there are still people who go to the games. Maybe they got free tickets with the parking paid also. This team would have trouble beating a girls flag football team.
With all the corruption in DC, it is only fitting that this team represents the city.

Big deal!

He's done. Stick a fork in him! His oft overrated career is over. He probably thinks he is a HOF player, which is where his ego belongs, but not the actual player. No way, no how. Good riddance!

Why are these idiots at the WP posting this bs? Who cares about our fat self-absorbed loser of a running-back? Our team just lost to the Chiefs!
Great job...

If GWilliams had been HC Zorn would still be OC and calling plays so I'm not sure how much better things would be. . . when d imploded here under GW he took a while to acknowledge it might be him and he'd lost his players.

I'm assuming everyone saw and already commented on Heyer getting bowled over literally several times. Chris S stay on the sidelines buddy your longevity as a human being isn't worth the bumper car disaster we call an offense.

I think you may be right, rachel216, but we need a real GM to put the new team together.

The difference between the redskins and other BOTTOM SUCKING teams like the Chiefs, Lions, et.al., is that the others are on the upside; rebuilding, drafting and playing young guys. In two or three years, they WILL be better than they are now. On the other hand, the Redskins, whom Petty Tyrant and his sycophant always believe are one big money free agent signing away from the super bowl, are the oldest team in the league. Next year those old guys will be another year older.

I hope portis is getting his 100 yards next year for some other awful team. he is so finished. who gives a slowing 27 yr old beaten high mileage back a huge extension? Snidely Owl does of course.

Raiders won today. They also are 2-4, and they beat the Iggles. Raiders D is looking pretty decent. Sacked McNabb like crazy. they will beat us.

keep piling on the only guy on the offense who made a play. i'm sure it was CP who dropped those passes (off ta mark passes) from JC and it was clint wo couldn't block for TC on tha goaline. OH yeah and e fumbled that snap on third-and-the game on the line.

Belicheck is a tool. No news there.

Pisses me off that Randy Moss didn't get more of the run it up FF pie.

This team will never get better until Petty Tyrant stops letting Sycophant massage his monumental ego and realize: "I DO NOT KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT FOOTBALL. I HAVE NO BUSINESS EVALUATING TALENT. I NEED TO REPLACE SYCOPHANT WITH A PROFESSIONAL. I WILL HENCEFORTH JOIN A FANTASY LEAGUE AND LET MY EMPLOYEES DO THE REAL WORK."

Jason will no doubt confirm the Zorn not calling plays next week story and blog it.

Posted by: cannontl | October 18, 2009 8:40 PM | Report abuse

Sellers finally made some blocks on the big run. But 1 good play means nothing to this train wreak of a team. PLEASE, PLEASE sit Kelly's non-productive AZZ, can't believe that Marko is not playing.

Football is complicated but if your not grounded in common sense you get these type of results. I dont know how much control Zorn has but someone is a f'n idiot. Common sense says that if someone is not performing PUT HIM ON THE BENCH. And Zorn your almighty scheme is some garbage, evident in the fact that we've won 4 of our last 14 games. F your goddamn scheme!!! This is the NFC East so why are we trying to run the West coast anyway. JC no were close to Joe Montana or even McNabb status. It's rediculous. Campbell throws a nice midrange ball but for all the talk about him having a great arm whats the point if his deep ball is mostly inaccurate? His footwork is terrible which I find odd considering he played college basketball. Awkward, no rhythem I've seen white boys dance better. And running out the stadium like a punk when they benched him shows he's a spoild brat. He should be grateful for his chance here. Any other coach(including Gibbs) would of benched him along time ago. Go hard or go home. Put up our shut up. Stuff like that. Collins isn't the answer either but at least he's not a complete spaz.
The rest of the retardation I see is (1)the fact that ARE is still returning punts. If Moss doesnt want to do it put D Hall back there(who in my opinion is only worth his contract when he has the ball in his hand, as he cant consistantly cover) let him earn some of his money. (2)They wont play Marco Mitchell. Why because Clark, Monk, and Sanders are all on a 1000 yard pace again? I have no beef with ARE(his a good possession reciever even thow his legs are gone) or Moss(when he decides to show up) but if Kelly or Thomas cant get open or catch or if JC just doesnt like throwing to them(whatever the problem is) TRY SOMETHING DIFFERENT. What do we have to lose?
(3)Keeping Cooley(your #1 reciever) in to block last week was retarded. Yoder could of played that role.
(4) Of course the play calling sucks but so does our time managment. JC always wastes time outs in the 3rd quarter because he to confused or retarded toget the right play in and then we look stupid after the two minute warning. If its not JC its freaking Zorn trying to challenge plays that anyone could see would clearly not be overturned (and yeah he almost did it today when we definatly needed all three time outs).
I respect Portis(even though he is a brown nosing, not practicing, backstabbing punk). If it wasn't for him we wouldn,t of made the playoffs those last two times, but we nedd some speed or at least a double threat third down back.
My last thought is what no one else is saying: Cerrato is not completly worthless(I dont think). If he had anything to do with recruiting our defensive coaches and players since he's been here I would have to say he's done an overall good job on that side of the ball

Posted by: DCBadBoy1 | October 18, 2009 9:22 PM | Report abuse

Why in world in nobody mentioning the fact that he did not score on that long run? That play lost the game. He could not even run by Sellers, who collapsed running down the field waiting for Portis to run by him. If he cut right he scores. He has no speed left and no desire. A real NFL back would have scored on that run. That was pathetic. Made even worse by the fact he was dancing and carrying on with the other overpaid jack@asses on the sidelines.
All the guys from "The U" need to go. Come On UnCapped Year! Without that there is zero, I repeat zero hope.
