Portis Honored

Jasno is on his way to Redskins Park, but I wanted to share this bit of news with you:

Clinton Portis has been named the NFC Offensive Player of the Week for his performance in the Redskins' victory over the Vikings. He had 20 carries for 76 yards and a touchdown, caught five passes for 48 yards and passed for a touchdown. That was his third TD pass and went for 15 yards to Antwaan Randle El in the second quarter.
According to the team, it's the first time Portis has been a POTW since joining the Redskins; he was AFC OPOTW with Denver in Week 14 of the 2003 season. Last time a Redskins running back was NOPOTW? Well, of course, you already know the answer: It was Stephen Davis in Week 11 of the 1999 season.

Nate

You beat me to the post. But to add to your info, We need to beat them Sunday. After that we go to Seattle. Then we play them again. So they will need to beat us back to back. One other little nugget. By beating them in Dallas, It would close Texas Stadium for good since their new building will be open in 2008. How sweet would that be? However we have to get there first.

See what can happen when your line blocks and you have your legs under you? Way to go CP.

Posted by: roweq | December 27, 2007 10:04 AM | Report abuse

Take THAT, Portis haters!

We need a nice big game from Clinton and Ladell this Sunday. Run, run, run on those Cowboys.

Posted by: NateinthePDX | December 27, 2007 10:11 AM | Report abuse

seriously way to go CP! i knew he had it in him to play the way he has been the last few weeks !

Posted by: realchica | December 27, 2007 10:12 AM | Report abuse

Gotcha, roweq. But don't forget that we'll potentially have the same challenge, beating THEM back to back, the first time when they have very little on the line and the second time in their building after they've had a bye week.

I thought their new building opened in '09, not '08? But agree that it would be sweet to beat them in the last game there, whenever it is.

Posted by: NateinthePDX | December 27, 2007 10:00 AM

Nate

I understand that we have to beat them twice. I was at the game this year in Dallas. The potential winning TD was coming towards me. From what I saw I fully believe we can can beat them with their team at full strength. Every game we have lost except for NE we have a chance to win in spite of every negative thing that happen through out the game. We just did not execute. Something we have changed on this his winning streak. So i say bring em on. "I aint scare of no stinkin Cowboys".

Wow...roweq makes a great point. Nothing could cap this nutty season more sweetly than to close out Texas Stadium with a 'Skins win.

Perchance to dream...

I think we should trade CP to Tampa for Chris Simms.

:-)

Posted by: PDiddy | December 27, 2007 10:22 AM | Report abuse

And the fantasy "experts" on ESPN said to sit him for the game. Huge night.

Posted by: RambleOn | December 27, 2007 10:24 AM | Report abuse

I agree - I don't think we have this game in the bag - anything can happen in a NFC East - even without Romo or TO - no one is going to want to rollover and I am sure they don't really want to "help" us make the playoffs.

How sweet would it be if we made the playoffs, made it to the Super Bowl, then played and stuck it to the Patriots? Too bad real life is not like the movies...would be a perfect ending to this horrible season...

Posted by: suzannepdc | December 27, 2007 10:26 AM | Report abuse

Ramble,

Its fantasy football, mathematically it does not work right. Westbrook's slide against dallas was the play of the week there, bad for fantasy players. Football is about more then just score and stats, its about smarts.

Hey, it's my birthday today! I've reached the ripe old age of 49. I know that sounds ancient to most of you but as you get older you will realize it's only a number. I vividly remember Sonny, Billy, Charlie, Larry and every era of Redskins thereafter. I remember thinking we should win the Super Bowl every year, we were that good. Times have definitely been tough recently but I think we are on the right track. Keep the Faith and beat Dallas. Hail.

I just wish we could find a WR who can go for 1000 yards a season. Cooley is our top guy at 744.

This is a strange year. I have faith in Santana, but with a kid QB and all those injuries on the line and in the receiving corps, I think they did the best they could and the best that we could reasonably expect. Underachievers? Yes. Should we logically expect more? Likely not.

They do need a big WR to complement Santana and ARE, though...

(I smell playoffs, followed by another heartbreaking "we're only one player away" free agent binge...)

CP will have more fun next year.

For those of you who haven't seen the 08 schedule (unofficial), it isn't difficult to project a 12-4 season. no Patriot or Greenbay or Jaguar or Buccaneer games. It would mean an even split in the division games and a loss to the Steelers.

Posted by: forces | December 27, 2007 10:36 AM | Report abuse

Great point, suzanne... every possible NFC playoff opponent for us after Seattle would be a regular season rematch. And if we win Sunday we will have gone 2-4 in those games so we'll have plenty of payback to dole out. But it all starts Sunday.

roweq, Diddy, I can't find anything that says the Cowboys stadium is ahead of schedule... I believe it opens in for the 2009 season. Who knows, maybe we'll get to go down there for next season's finale and poop in their punch bowl.

Posted by: NateinthePDX | December 27, 2007 10:36 AM | Report abuse

Overlooked by whom? Where are they? Let me at em.

Posted by: jspaceman72 | December 27, 2007 10:36 AM | Report abuse

Diddy, I think that the 'big free agent' days of yore are long gone, or at least I hope they are. It seems like the general direction of the team was to get younger, Montomery, HB, Landry, Doughty, Golston, Heyer, are all in thier first or second years with the team.

I do however agree that a tall wide-out is a definite must for this team. I'd be happy if they re-signed Caldwell, and McCardell, also.

On a free agent note, I think that Rock is a goner next year. He doesn't bring enough to the table to justify giving him the type of money that it seems like he's going to want.

Posted by: gregmarino88 | December 27, 2007 10:40 AM | Report abuse

On the plus side we will have three guys with 700 catching yards at the end of the year.

Posted by: alex35332 | December 27, 2007 10:41 AM | Report abuse

I think we need to find someone else to return punts, I would rather a north south guy doing that job over ARE's east west moving.

Posted by: alex35332 | December 27, 2007 10:43 AM | Report abuse

greg...with this organization, nothing would surprise me. I honestly don't care what they do, as long as they win. I think it's theoretically possible to build through free agency. I wonder if the 'Skins' track record in free agency is statistically better or worse than the League average... Obviously, to us fans, it appears worse. But you have to look at the League as a whole and then evaluate where the 'Skins stand...I'm too lazy to do that :-)

Ellipsis! ...

What a difference a year makes. One year ago we were talking about Springs going to the IR and Reed Doughty and trying to play spoiler in our finale against the Jints... For what it's worth. I prefer what we're talking about today.

Diddy, while I agree that nothing this ownership does surprises me, I believe that they are learning how to run a successful franchise, and while they would never admit to such, are realizing the error of their way's in the past.

Diddy, I can't see Gibbs/Snyder going back to their spending ways in free agency. I truly believe Gibbs has learned a valuable lesson when it comes to free agency. Not to mention, the Skins will not have a ton of cap room to play with. Sure they will shuffle some money around to sign a few guys, but I would expect more of what we saw last offseason... but with more draft picks!

Posted by: skinsfan_81 | December 27, 2007 11:53 AM | Report abuse

Danny was mulling through a trade with Denver to send Portis, Moss and Samuels to the Broncos for a 7th rounder and a bag of Doritos. Way to not pull the trigger Mr. Snyder!

Happy birthday Mad Dog! My birthday wish for the Skins to beat the Packers fell short... let's hope your birthday wish is answered.

Happy Birthday bro and hope your 49th is a sweet one. I'll be celebrating my 36th today, though I'm trying to convince friends and family that I'd prefer to do this on my half birthday date (June 27th) because summer celebrations are a lot more fun than winter ones.

Cheers

PS Diddy- Trying to work out a trip to Seattle early to mid spring of 2008. Should I give you a shout once I solidify plans or do you want nothing to do with an Iggles fan?

Where I thought last week would be up to the offense to come up big, I think it will be about our defense this week. If williams gets up a good gameplan like he did against the vikes, Skins should cruise. They just need to keep Landry deep again so they don't give up any deep balls like they did to Owens. Johnson doesn't have a strong enough arm to throw any deep balls that won't have to have a ton of air under them like Romo can do, so Landry might get himself a pick or two. A good run game from CP and Betts should control the clock and win one for us. The crowd will need to be load and pumped as well.

Second NW trip question. If I extended the trip a bit to see more of the NW, should I go up to Vancouver or down to Portland? Haven't been to Portland, so I'm intrigued, but the little I remember of Vancouver as a teenager was very, very cool.

Suggestions?

Adam

PS Nate, is the Hair of the Dog brewery still up and running in Portland and is Fred still knocking out high quality, funky stuff?
