Portis Turns an Ankle

With the summer storm gods raining down on Redskins Park and the players and fans seeking shelter, Jim Zorn talked briefly to reporters on the morning practice.

He said that Clinton Portis turned his ankle and, while they believe the sprain to be minor, the medical staff will check out the injury. Chris Samuels's surgically repaired elbow was a little stiff and sore so he skipped the activities. They're telling Jasno they still believe he'll be ready in plenty of time for real fubball. ...

London Fletcher was indeed excused to be with his wife for the birth of their second child; they were expecting a boy (they have a little girl). ...

As for the issue of Jason Taylor and No. 55 ...

Taylor said he entered into very brief negotiations with Andre Carter about obtaining No. 99 Monday night, but after talking to his wife, opted for a change.

"I decided to let 99 stay in Miami," he said.

Taylor said he likes wearing double-digits, and given the limitations put on certain numbers and positions, 55 was the best option. Plus, it's what he wore in the Senior Bowl.

Taylor said his new teammates have ribbed him a bit about his Hollywood offseason, and that he has only talked briefly with the coaches overall about role and philosophy.

Being back on the field - however briefly due to the storm - was old hat.

"It felt like football. I've done it long enough. It's like riding a bike."

Taylor said he was preparing to play more often at linebacker in Miami, and is comfortable in various capacities.

As for the number change: "It'll take a while to get used to," Taylor said

does portis even need an ankle? smoot doesnt...

Posted by: andrew | July 22, 2008 10:36 AM | Report abuse

Hmm... Madden just got more interesting this year. Putting Wilson in as a speed rusher on the same side with Taylor... mwahhahaa, so much speed blitzing can be possible.

I know that this isn't supposed to be said since everyone hear is euphoric about the JT trade. And I must admit, I'm excited about the possibility of a finally potent pass rush from our line and not having to blitz the house to get to the QB. However, I get a real big what-if in my head when I read about Terrell Suggs holding out and wonder how much more it would have cost to get a guy who is 23 versus a guy who is 33. Oh well, in Vinny we trust right?

Posted by: zjfr2 | July 22, 2008 10:38 AM | Report abuse

CP needs to rub whatever Smoot use on his ankle. lol

Posted by: jm220 | July 22, 2008 10:39 AM | Report abuse

But given Portis' aversion to camp and preseason, it could be a conveniently timed tweakage. We'll find out.

Posted by: Cindy | July 22, 2008 10:40 AM | Report abuse

So what's the consensus? Is he just trying to get out of summer-camp, or what?

Also - can someone please do some hypnosis on ol CP so he gets the fear of injury out of his head??

Anyone who studied Payton should know you have to block that out of your mind to play RB.

From the Skins' site, a quote from the new D-line coach, John Palmero, last night:

"[The Daniels injury] kind of blindsided me," he said. "I really got emotionally attached to Phillip in a short period of time. His loss for the season obviously bothers me because he is not only a great football player, but a great man.

Posted by: dcsween | July 22, 2008 10:43 AM | Report abuse

It would have cost alot more to obtain Suggs because he was franchised meaning we would have to have given up a first round pick maybe even two. maybe next year if he does not sign a contract we might go after him but he also stated that he wanted to go to arizona because that is where he went to college and I think he may be from there as well.

Posted by: Great One | July 22, 2008 10:45 AM | Report abuse

I saw Portis sitting out of the drills, he was just chillin' on the side with the other players...still in his gear (helmet off)...kneeling/squatting/standing....just know that he was not posted up with the trainers...he was just off to the side.

Also of note:

Fred Davis BROKE Landry's ankles on a double move....then 3 minutes later Fred Davis did a spin move and left Marcus Washington in the dust for a TD....This guy and Cooley will be SCARY!

Another Note:

Jason Campbell looked sharper today, knocking the rust off day by day

Another Note:

It looked like Landry is cool with rookie Horton...they chatted it up a lot in between drills....while Doughty and Sweigart had nothing to do with each other personally...stood 10 feet away from each other...competing for the same job.

Another Note:

Mike Sellers caught a great pass over his shoulder on the sideline and stayed in bounds then turn up field for a TD....but RB coach Stump Mitchell yelled at him about his cut...saying Sellers cut too early and saying "I'm not having none of that, Mike!". Stump Mitchell said he needs 8 and a half and Sellers only gave him 8. Meaning, he cut half a yard too early. TALK ABOUT DETAILS, DETAILS, DETAILS.

Squire, that's great. I wonder how the offense will do with JT in there and Fletcher after he gets sleep deprived with the addition of his new boy.

It seriously sounds like Portis is trying to get out of practice. One would figure though with the new offense, he would want to stay in there a bit more at least early on to get the hang of it.

The Truth also thinks that Portis should skip all preseason games.

Posted by: The Truth | July 22, 2008 10:53 AM | Report abuse

zjfr2, the Ravens still have the rights to Suggs ... he's essentially like an exclusive rights free agent (only looking to make a ton more money if he signs), but the Ravens put a franchise tag on him for a reason ...

I'm glad I'm not the only one excited about this! LEs are unstoppabled on the PS2 version of Madden (even Philip Daniels gets 15 sacks!), and with JT playing that spot, I'll probably get like 30 sacks from him on the game!

This was kicked around here when the trade was announced; the Skins would have had to give up AT LEAST a 1st and 3rd Rounder to get him, if not two #1s. Even though he's younger, you don't know if he can be a consistent down-lineman (he's played DE/LB in a 3-4 in Baltimore) and he's of questionable character (who isn't in Baltimore?!). TODAY the JT trade makes better sense. Maybe not in 5 years, but today.

Don't get me wrong, I love the trade, and I like what our defense looks like now, if we stay healthy, but I just am curious if Vinny at least looked around for what it would cost for a younger option or if they went back to their old ways and went for the name. Premier ends are rare and we got one. I'm happy, and if he plays out his contract the price was fair.

Interesting take on the Landry / Horton vs Doughhty / Schweigert relationship. Although Horton may see special teams or the prac. squad. Doughty/Schweigert (sounds like a lady lawyer) ends with one starting and the other on teams or even cut for a younger kid, like Horton.

Reading some of the articles in the Post this morning, it sounds like we're trading off some run stopping for pass rushing. As a fan, I suppose I'm ready for that change, but I wonder if we have anyone on the D-line who can step up in the more obvious run situations. What do you guys think?

Posted by: redskirt | July 22, 2008 11:18 AM | Report abuse

By the way, is anyone else bothered by the fact that Zorn and a couple other people are calling the Daniels injury a "tragedy"? Really? Tragic? Unfortunate, inconvenient, even depressing. But how can the one team that had their best player murdered less than a year ago use the word 'tragic' so carelessly?

Posted by: brownwood26 | July 22, 2008 7:42 AM

I'm not bothered, but maybe what the Redskins should do is not only to retire people's jerseys but also certain words. The words will be banned from the lexicon of anyone who receives a paycheck from the team. Anyone who negligently utters the words will be reminded that they're out of touch with the past:

"tragedy" in deference to Sean Taylor;
"bust" in deference to Adam Archuleta;
"mega bust" in deference to Brandon Lloyd;
"fracture" in deference to Joe Theisman;
"overslept" in deference to Fred Davis;
"out of position" in deference to LaVar Arrington and
"drunk out of his mind" in deference to John Riggins.

That's a start. Other thoughts?

I swing by practice on my way to work...missed yesterdays practice cuz I was up real late with the lady...ya know ; )

Another note about the New Guy. He was on the far field with the D-line...mostly watching but did do a few drills. Taylor and Carter talked and laughed a lot....looks like they are gelin' pretty good for less than 24 hours.

Taylor was staying low key, just kind of standing back and taking it all in. He looked as if it hasn't hit him yet...that he is in Virginina all of a sudden and wearing Maroon & Black (lol). I could tell the team is definitely easing him in, which you'd expect since the rest of the guys already know Blache's system + 4 months of OTA's....my bet is he spends this week getting a feel for his teammates, then next week they unleash the hound.

The word "tragedy" is commonly used for trivial matters in the world of sports and elsewhere. I would be upset if I thought Coach Z somehow failed to understand the difference between a knee injury and the murder of a teammate, but I'm pretty sure he has a handle on that, so I'll let him slide.

Ahh... the one weather phenomena that folks from the mid-

Does anybody here thing Demetric Evans is better than Jason Taylor? Its tough to lose the draft picks, but sometimes even a team the builds through the draft has to make exceptions. Also, if they are smart they trade out of the first round next year to supplement their picks. I don't think there's a team in the LEAGUE (Pats included) that does not make this deal if they lose a starting and backup DE on the first day of camp. Nobody has the kind of depth to take that kind of hit and say "Well, Jason Taylor's available, but I think we'll be fine with guys off the street"

No one cares about Clinton Portis or the Washington Redskins for that matter.

News flash. When you get cut by a 1 Win team your career might be over.

Who did the phins cut? When you get traded by a 1 win team for draft pics you're what's called a victim of rebuilding.

Frank Hendrhan (sp?) has taken over for Jerry Coleman on ESPN980. I like.

Frank also says that they had to label him as DE/LB in order to get #55, since only LBs can get that # on defense

I certainly hope Campbell is ok once the season rolls around. I found a couple of good interviews with Campbell and Taylor. Both are pretty interesting. Check them out:

I predict that Portis will use this ankle sprain to limit his workout outs and participation in pre-season. The guy is slacker when it comes to practice and pre-season.

My husband and I were just discussing last night how long it would take for Clinto Portis to be "injured". And how much are they paying this guy?

Skins need to trade Portis immediately while he still has value. I said it last season. He is all used up. Maybe the skins can recoup those picks they used for Taylor.

Betts and SHelton will be a great combination.
