Season Opener May Start Earlier

Here's a bit of news, albeit only peripherally related to the Redskins....We needed a new thread....
From the AP:
The NFL is considering starting its Thursday night season opener an hour-and-a-half earlier to avoid clashing with the Republican National Convention.
The game, in which the Super Bowl-champion New York Giants will be the home team, is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. EDT on Sept. 4 and will be televised by NBC. League spokesman Greg Aiello said Wednesday that the NFL is talking with the network about changing the game's starting time to 7 p.m.
Sept. 4 also is the concluding night of the Republican convention.
The highlight games of the NFL's first weekend, including the Giants' opponent for the opener, will be announced Monday during league meetings in Palm Beach, Fla. The rest of the schedule will be announced later next month.

First I've heard of Sam Baker being considered a first round pick. I highly doubt that the Redskins will pick him. I couldn't tell you the first thing about him.

greg, this article also has CCampbell being looked at with our 21 pick. I just do not see him picked before rd 2 at this point.

Looks like lazy research to me, kind of how I feel today about research.

malcom kellys stock has fallen so far, i read somewhere he might not even get taken in the 2nd round

Seth, I could see him easily being a 3rd
round pick. When you run a 4.7 at the combine, and the draft being somewhat deep for receivers, it doesn't bode well.

Cindy ... now maybe we did need a new thread, but jeez ... couldn't you come up with something more relevant and newsworthy? Like the washing machine is done and its time to move the clothes over to the dryer? Or Mark Brunell's second cousin has a friend who just won $500 in the lottery? Something??

I hope we open against the G-Men on that Thursday night. I have a feeling the opener will be the VaGiants vs the Cowpies though....

BONG!

Kelly had a knee injury at the combine. He runs again in early April. If he runs 4.5 he'll be back in the 1st round mix.

Posted by: marlonjohn | March 26, 2008 2:42 PM | Report abuse

But I moved the clothes into the dryer before I left home, Zcezcest1. I freely admit it's a lame post, but we must keep driving these dogies (Move 'em on, head 'em up! Rawhide!) in the march to 200k by wheneveritis.

Posted by: TheCindy | March 26, 2008 2:47 PM | Report abuse

Does anyone else agree that we should move Jason Campbell to wide receiver?

We could have Mix on one side and Campbell on the other. Book end behemoths!

Santana moves to the slot, and Randel El as our 4th wide. Think of the mismatches!

Everyone wins. We have two protypical large receivers. Campbell stays a Redskin. Collins has big targets.

Just a thought...but a darn good one.

Redskins Showing Interest in Rookie CB

By George Lafoon
Warpath Insiders
Posted Mar 25, 2008

According to his agent, the Redskins have shown some interest in a rookie CB for the draft in April.

James Jones from CardinalsInsider.com told me today that, per his agent, the Redskins have shown some interest in Nebraska CB Zach Bowman.

His Pro Day was on March 12th and he ran in the 4.3-4.4 range and showed well in his position drills.

Zack Bowman against Nevada

His agent didn't elaborate, but did say that Zack has over come quite a bit in his life including a ruptured patellar tendon in order to compete for an NFL Draft selection.

His agent also told James that if his client had come out after his Junior Season, he might have been one of the top DB picks in the draft.

As far as the Redskins go, and the need to draft a CB, I think it is plain and simple. You can rationlize this interest in one word.

DEPTH

The Redskins did not try to re-sign CB David Macklin, S Pierson Prioleau, or S Omar Stoutmire. Carlos Rogers is also trying to come back from major knee surgery.

So that leaves the Redskins, as of today, with only two capable starters in Fred Smoot and Shawn Springs.

With the Redskins being so quiet in Free Agency, at least, thus far, the draft seems like a logical place for the Redskins to try and improve this depth.

The question is, in what round will they address it?

Zack Bowman is the 27th ranked CB according to Scout.com rankings, so certainly, he could be had in the later rounds.

Makes total sense considering the Redskins are top 3 in Ratings when playing their games. HAs the defending SB Champ ever lose the 1st game?

Quick conspiracy theory:

The Danny is spending no money this year, and infusing no talent in order to:

1. Save money for 2009
2. Have a crap record for the Draft of 2009
3. Fire Zorn prior to 2009
4. Hire Cowher in 2009, where he will have more money to spend and higher draft picks

I'm just saying.

Greg,

This is the infor I have on Bowman,

Cornerback | Senior | Nebraska Zack Bowman
Height: 6-01/8 | Weight: 197 | 40-Time: 4.43

Official Bio

Strengths:
Has good size and a solid frame with long arms...Decent timed speed...Very good athlete...Physical and aggressive at the line...Excellent ball skills and pretty good hands...Does a nice job against the run...Good special teamer...Has some upside.

Weaknesses:
Health and durability are major concerns...Does not have much experience...Very raw and needs to refine his technique and footwork...A marginal tackler...Average awareness and instincts...Will he ever play like he did pre-injury?...Big bust factor.

Notes:
A native of Anchorage, Alaska...Only played in 22 Division I games in college with just 9 starts...Was one of the top JUCO prospects in the nation prior to arriving in Lincoln...Redshirted in 2006 after tearing his left ACL during fall practice...Seriously considered entering the 2007 NFL Draft, even though he had not played in over a year, before ultimately heading back to school for his senior season..Tore his right patellar tendon during spring practice in 2007...Has all the physical tools you look for, at least he did before all the injuries hit..If he can get back to where he was a couple of years ago some team could get a 1st round talent late in the draft...Low Risk / High Reward, Boom or Bust type who just might be worth taking a flyer on.

Kerzon,

Was a little hung over this morning but luckly, I was smart enough to come home and go to bed by 10, so it was not that bad. The ball and chain approaches as we speak, along with the two little rug rats, what is a man to do.

How can you forget the DALLAS COWBOYS losing their opening primetime game when Emmitt Smith held out.

Sorry, I didn't make my question clear enough. I was refering to the Thursday Opening Game that has been played for only 5 or 6 years. The Cowboys haven't even won a playoff game in decade(s).....

The Cowboys may not have won a playoff game in a decade, but they have Yony Tomo as their starting quarterback.

I see the Sports "absolute retard" is back in effect. He now wants Jason Campbell as a WR. Didn't he say yesterday that JC wasn't mobile? If that were the case why would you want him as a WR? Contradictions abound, way to go "absolute retard."

alex,

Pony Yomo is a gunslinger. Over time he will win a bunch of regular season games for his team, maybe even a playoff game someday.

At least he's not afraid to make a mistake. It's a shame the Redskins don't have more than one cornerback who can exploit that propensity.

Shawn Springs is just about dried up, and the other guy we wasted a first round pick on, what's his name, the one who suffered a near career ending injury, has how many career interceptions?

Carlos Rodgers, that's his name.

As far as top two needs in this upcoming draft;

Pass rushing DE, and athletic, handsy CB, with Steve Slaton RB, WVU, thrown in for grins and giggles.

Posted by: podspeak | March 26, 2008 4:55 PM | Report abuse

Steve Slaton's stock has dropped due to a less than stellar performance in the combine, if I'm not mistaken.

The young man demonstrated good speed, sick cutback ability, and sound open field awareness in his years as a Mountaineer.

If he's available, this dude could help out on the offensive side of the ball, think Michael Westbrook, and perhaps provide a spark in our return game?
