My Best Guess At The Cuts

Here's my guess on today's roster moves, and who gets released:

Askew, Matthias DT
Boschetti, Ryan DT
Brooks, Durant P
Broughton, Nehemiah FB
Clark, Devin OL
Crummey, Andrew OL
Devine, Derek QB
Gant, Horace WR
Gatewood, Curtis LB
Ghee, Patrick S
Holloway, David LB
Jackson, Rob DE
Mann, Maurice WR
Mason, Marcus RB
Matua, Fred OL
Mix, Anthony WR
Tyron, Justin CB
Danny, Verdun-Wheeler LB
Washington, Tavares OL
Westbrook, Byron CB

That's 20 right there. They need to cut 22. If they put Malcolm Kelly on IR, then that's one spot (or even if they put him on PUP for six weeks, they still buy one roster spot that way. So let's call that cut No. 21. So for the final move, maybe they cut C Justin Geisinger and just let Jansen and/or Kendall serve as backup centers and have no true centers on the roster. Or maybe they cut Todd Wade. But I think that at least 19 or so of these moves are relatively straightforward and wouldn't warrant a ton of debate.

As for the practice squad, I could see them signing one or two guys from elsewhere, and re-signing Jackson, Westbrook, Tryon, Clark, Crummey, Gatewood and Mix to their squad. My sense is Marcus Mason will explore practice squad options elsewhere if he does not get claimed on waivers.

Kelly cannot be PUP listed as he has been passed fit for practice during training camp.

I think Frost is the one that is gone. He really didn't blow Brooks out of the water and they drafted Brooks because they don't have faith in Frost.

Frost ends up on ice.

Posted by: HaikuMan | August 30, 2008 12:06 PM | Report abuse

Yeah i was in Bahrain...i'm between jobs on my way to Hawaii. Anyway.

Brooks should be kept. Frost is mediocre at best... dude can't kick a nut punt or keep one from going into the endzone at key moments in the game if his life depended on it. JLC is all wrapped around the "he is the holder" axle. Really..who gives a F^&*? Collins or Colt can hold, and one of them SHOULD be the holder to open up the fake FG game. Colt pops up and lobs one to Sellers releasing from end contain for a first down!! Duh. Well, maybe not Sellers, dude has hands of stone, LOL. You get the point. Brooks equaled Frost all camp AT WORST...and has HUGE upside. To me, its a no brainer, Frost is outta here.

Can Mason play FB as well as TB? Lose Nemo and keep Mason as a TB/FB combo. OR, lose Nemo and mix in Davis at FB in a pinch? I just figure you can save an offensive spot and keep the 4 RB's if you cut Nemo and cna make do with Sellers as the only true FB on the roster. Would also open up some slop room for an extra offensive player if you don't want to have Kelly on IR but want to have 6 WR who are ready to go week 1.

Wade?? see ya later... Jansen?? Whoever said cut him is not thinking too clearly IMO. Guy has been injured with a foot...and has been out for pretty much all of two seasons recently.. But to me, still has a lot left in the tank, is a team leader, and can still knock people off the ball. Me thinks his ankle/foot has been giving him pass protect difficulty recently. No way you keep Wade over Jon Jansen. You don't keep Wade over anybody IMO, LOL. Heyer and Rinehart are your BU tackles.

Kelly is the sticky thorn in the roster side. 'Tana, ARE, Thrash, Thomas, McMullen (to me Dude EARNED his spot)... Kelly?? Leaves Mix on the outside looking in. Who am I overlooking? OR if you IR Kelly, Mix (6'5" 235 is a MUST have in WC Offense) is in? Again who am I overlooking? I haven't had the benefit of seeing the games or much tape. I figure it comes down to Kelly or Mix for the last spot...if they dont go with the lose Nemo plan and keep only 1 FB plan i outlined above.

Well, we should know in 4 plus hours...

I'll wait until the Skins actually make their cuts to start babbling about who should and shouldn't be there.

I like Fincher though.

ps- I haven't BMGO since getting to Colorado. Any super smart fans in Colorado Springs? I'm loving Old Chicago and will probably be watching my Skins there on Sundays. I'm still not used to "Mountain Time" thing. 11am football games? Yeesh.

And why the heck is Ethan Albright sucking up a roster spot to ONLY long snap?? Can't we get Casey or his back up or SOMEBODY else to long snap? To me that is the biggest waste of a roster spot...ever.

Yeah I KNOW its important...and you can't afford to F it up...but damn, how hard can it be?? I did it in Pee Wee.... yeah yeah yeah...save the tomatoes...the point is its a teachable skill and we can work somebody in there to make another spot on the roster.

Everyone repeat after me...

There is ZERO chance that Malcolm Kelly will be put on the PUP. He will either be on the 53 man roster or IR.

Do your homework, Jason!

welcome back dorf....

I would like to see Rob Jackson make the roster...and the young olineman...

Whoever keeps posting that Kelly can't be PUPed is wrong as per Pat Kirwan's explanation on Sirius NFL Radio....

Also I am rooting against Mason, would rather keep numbers at O/D line/LB or DB than RB....

Please keep Brooks. Just think of all the potential that he has. We know what Frost is already-inconsistent. If it doesn't work out then I am sure that we can get Frost back.

Nice list Jinxman...only thing I would do is keep 9 DL (Psquad Jackson), and keep 7 WR(add Kelly). Your list points out to me the futility of trying to keep Mason...unless they could steal a spot from Albright. Gotta get a real player to long snap!!

My projected roster

Posted by: KW | August 30, 2008 12:28 PM | Report abuse

My roster Prediction
who makes the roster? here's my list:
Offense
Qb's: Jason Campbell, Todd Collins, Colt Brennan = 3
Rb's : Clinton portis, Ladell Betts, Rock Cartright, Marcus Mason = 4
Fb : Mike Sellers = 1
TE's: Chris Cooley, Todd Yorder, Fred Davis = 3
Wr's : Santana Moss, ARE, James Thrash, Malcolm Kelly, Devin Thomas, Billy McMullen = 6 (you can add Maurice Mann if Malcolm Kelly is place on IR or PUP)
OL : Chris Samuels, Pete Kendall, Casey Rabach, Randy Thomas, Jon Jansen,Jason Fabini, Stephon Heyer, Chad Rinehart, Justin Geisinger. = 9 (Andrew Crummey instead of Geisinger?)
Total = 25
Defense
DE: Jason Taylor, Andre Carter, Chris Wilson, Demetric Evans, Erasmus James = 5
DL: Cornelius Griffin, Kedric Golston, Anthony Montgomery, Lorenzo Alexander = 4
LB's: London Flecher, Marcus Washington, Rocky McIntosh, H. B Blades, Khary Cambell, Alfred Fincher = 6
CB's: Shawn Springs, Fred Smoot, Carlos Rogers, Leigh Torrence, Matteral Richardson = 5
DB's: LaRon Landry, Chris Horton, Kareem Moore, Reed Doughty = 4
Total = 24
Special Team
LS : Ethan Albright
K : Shaun Suisham
P : Durant Brooks
Total = 3

As for the final spot on the roster I would say it's between Marcus Mason, Rob Jackson and Justin Hamilton who ever does not make it goes to practice squad.

Practice Squad = Maurice Mann, Justin Hamilton, (Justin Geisinger or Andrew Crummey), Rob Jackson, Justin Tryon, Marcus Mason, Anthony Mix, Curtis Gatewood = 8 but depending on Malcolm Kelly Mann could be active. Also on a note Reche Caldwell might be cut and we can also add him to the roster instead of Mann.

Free agent on our Speed dial list: Todd Wade, Ryan Boschetti, Devin Clark

Posted by: SkinsfaninManila | August 30, 2008 12:38 PM | Report abuse

My hope for the next CBA is that they allow teams to keep 60 on the active roster during the season with 5 players inactive on gameday. Also, it would benefit teams during the pre-season if they allowed teams to keep 90-95 players on the roster. The Skins were handicapped all off-season with all of the injuries they experienced, and I'm sure they aren't the only team to go through this either.

On a side note, the NFL needs to follow in the NBA's footsteps and figure out how to assign salaries based upon where a player is picked. The amount of money these rookies make without playing a down is ridiculous...

WHY BROOKS STAYS

+++JLC is all wrapped around the "he is the holder" axle. Really..who gives a F^&*? Collins or Colt can hold, and one of them SHOULD be the holder to open up the fake FG game. +++

Ah yes, the all important Fake field Goal game.. (Actually, Colt wont' be active most games.)

For most teams, holder is a critical gig. Ask Romo. Or ask Theismann--if you have an hour for his response.

Actually, with the Redskins, I suspect it's more important to have a guy who can boom 10-15 punts per game.

If they cut BROOKS--he is GONE tomorrow. Three-four teams will fight over him. If they cut Frost, he may twist in the wind. Teams HAVE holders, and who needs a shank artist?

The OTHER factor. Vinny is already embarrassed over his drafted receivers inability to upgrade the passing game, he doesnt' want to be further punked by cutting the punter he selected with a draft pick.

Say Goodnight, Frosty.

Posted by: Corkczar | August 30, 2008 12:44 PM | Report abuse

Nice to see all these draft picks being cut or signed to the practice squad. Another bang-up job from the atrocious FO.

Posted by: JinxMan | August 30, 2008 12:47 PM | Report abuse

I think Frosty stays for one reason although the vinny pride thing will play a big part.

Holding for kicks. Frosty holds for FGs and has done a good job. Do you want to pass that off to a rookie?

Posted by: Skinz | August 30, 2008 12:49 PM | Report abuse

This stuff about Brooks not being able to hold is bs. At GT he was the holder for Travis Bell, all-ACC kicker who holds GT all-time record for FG percentage. It all goes back to the fact that Brooks was holding on a single FG that Suisham missed in the 1st preseason game. Even the coaching staff said that wasn't b/c of the hold. If they cut Brooks, fans have a right to be pissed at the FO wasting a pick on a guy who, despite the fact that he performed at least as well as the incumbent in the preseason, gets cut and goes to another team to be an above avg punter for the next 15 seasons.

Posted by: michaelbaldwinbruce | August 30, 2008 12:55 PM | Report abuse

Never said holder was not a critical gig. Good point about Colt being inactive most games. Maybe, maybe not. One of them (Collins or Colt) will be though. I figure a guy who caught shotgun snaps just about every play he played in Hawaii should be able to catch it, place it, and spin it... and yeah, faking field goals is not gonna happen much, but would you want Frosty jumping up with the ball??? Yeah, me niether. With Collins or Colt...at LEAST its an option.

The real point I'm trying to make is that JLC seems to think that Frost's status as holder makes him untouchable. He tried putting those words into Zorn's mouth at the shlub fest Friday...and Zorn spit them right back out.

At the end of the day...we agree that Frost should be gone.

Posted by: SkinsfaninManila | August 30, 2008 12:55 PM | Report abuse

To be honest I think JLC wants Brooks to be gone so he have one more thing to continue his childish fight with Skins FO

Posted by: jm220 | August 30, 2008 12:57 PM | Report abuse

You can say holding is BS....but it's not. One is proven and one is not. I didn't say he wouldn't be good but it's as good a tie break as any.

As for Colt being innactive. Yes he'll be the third emergency QB and not count on the gameday roster and can only play if both other QB's get hurt.

Posted by: Skinz | August 30, 2008 12:58 PM | Report abuse

JM Frosty has blasted the ball farther this year.

If you pick Brooks it's either that you feel he'll get better or that frosty is performing because the competition....or that you don't want to cut a draft pick.

Cause Frosty's stats are better this preseason and he's done it on the big stage.

Posted by: Skinz | August 30, 2008 1:00 PM | Report abuse

I was not aware that Brooks was a holder at GTech...thanks for pointing that out.

Vinny didn't pick a punter in a vaccuum. Danny Smith and Zorn both thought it was an area of the team that could be upgraded that warranted a draft pick.

Personally, I'm tired of Frost and his audition and practice field heroics. I want somebody who can down it inside the 10 or boot it LONG out of our own end with 4 mins left in the game when trying to milk out a win.

The only stats where Frost's are better are on gross distance. On net distance, return yards, opposing team's avg starting field position, and as far as I can tell, hang time, Brooks has the better stats.

1) Tryon- practice squad Richardson- practice squad or team. Cedric Holt was even worse than tryon (if possible), he's gone.

2) Hamilton lookes pretty good, practice squad

3) Can't PUP Kelly, must IR him. If he wasn't PUP'ed early he can't be now.

4) A few more of those guys can hit the PS

There was only one field goal attempt Friday and Frost was the holder. My own guess is that Brooks would have held on the second. Jasno, though, read a lot of significance into the fact that Frost held and Brooks didn't. I don't get it.

My own belief is that this competition had already been decided before the game, based on the previous game plus extensive observations of the two in practice. We have no idea how they did there, but the 'Skins do. And, we don't have statistics on hang time -- in the games or in practice.

I also think that if they can work a trade for either of the two, then they'll keep the one that they can't trade.

We'll know in three hours. Woo-hoo. Bring on the Giants.

I'm also thinking that Frost keeps the job ... if "open competition" is going to mean something, he gets it. Damb myself for saying that, but objectively, he won the job.

Also agree that Mason ends up as a casualty b/c of the need for a 6th WR rather than a 4th RB ... plus Rock did not stumble at all on his teams play. Damb number 2.

James stepped up. As did Wilson. That means no to Rob Jackson. Damb number 3.

That said, I still feel like Boschetti won a job ... just not sure if there was a job there for him to win. Damb number 4.

Parting words ... Todd Wade, thanks for that Saints game last year ... see ya.

I did not see Frost or Brooks distinguish themselves one over another. It seems like Frost can boom it a bit more consistently (throw in a shank or 2 on occassion), but Brooks looks like he's got a better touch on placing the ball around the 10. Tie goes to Brooks - more upside, spent a pick on him.

Every now and then I hear someone hyping Mix. Has he even caught a pass in the preseason? Has he been making some monster plays that I don't know about? I can drive around town and round up a half dozen 6'5''/230 guys. THe question is can they play professional football? I saw Maurice Mann make alot more plays in preseaon than Mix.

It doesn't look like we'll keep Mason which is a shame. He's gonna be on someone else's NFL roster.

Posted by: p1funk | August 30, 2008 1:29 PM | Report abuse

Frost may be a good holder and he may have chemistry with Suisham. However, when it comes to his job of punting, which is more important, he constantly out-punts the punt team coverage, which is why his net average is crap. Dude has no hang-time.

Brooks on the other hand has been a field goal holder in the past and this dude is the Ray Guy award winner... hell this guy is friends with and was trained by Ray Guy. 'Nuff said!

Adam Schefter of NFL Network reports that the Redskins’ cuts included offensive lineman Todd Wade, punter Derrick Frost and running back Marcus Mason.

The decision to cut Frost means Durant Brooks, a rookie sixth-round pick out of Georgia Tech, won the preseason punting competition.

And while preseason means something to punters, it doesn’t mean much to running backs: The Redskins cut Mason even though he led the NFL in rushing this preseason.

Yeah, I know there is the Vinny's embarrassment factor but the only thing I've seen beaten more than J.T. was Keith Moon's old drum kit.

Posted by: Corkczar | August 30, 2008 1:53 PM

I agree. I thought he had some great speed, but he has been a real disappointment.

Posted by: frediefritz | August 30, 2008 1:57 PM | Report abuse

Frost, Mason and Wade have been cut according to PFT (schefter) its amazing how the national media who cover 32 teams can get the scoop before local guys whos job is to follow one team.

Also as others have mentioned Kelly can not be put on PUP. I don't blame Jason for not knowing because Zorn didn't even know. Know that it has been stated a few times maybe Jason will take the time to research it and edit his blog.

Posted by: Anonymous | August 30, 2008 1:57 PM | Report abuse

Frost may be a good holder and he may have chemistry with Suisham. However, when it comes to his job of punting, which is more important, he constantly out-punts the punt team coverage, which is why his net average is crap. Dude has no hang-time.

Brooks on the other hand has been a field goal holder in the past and this dude is the Ray Guy award winner... hell this guy is friends with and was trained by Ray Guy. 'Nuff said!

Posted by: JinxMan | August 30, 2008 1:30 PM

Jinxman,

You are the smartest man alive, I have been saying this all preseason he out kicks the coverage on almost every kick. His net average sucks. Kicking far does not mean he is better. Net average is the best way to distinguish between punters.

Posted by: kmdp4 | August 30, 2008 1:58 PM | Report abuse

I agree with jinxMan's roster except I would cut Wilson and keep Hamilton

Posted by: WoodbridgeTom | August 30, 2008 2:00 PM | Report abuse

You would think JLC would get the information before Shefter, but Shefter has a better relationship with the Redskins.

I'm liking it. Cutting Wade means we are keeping younger HEALTHY OL's. Brooks is a great pickup, and we need wr's more than a 4th rb.

Oh, please. Shefter beats Everyone. Why do you think he was on the NBC sidelines, Thursday.

It's the POST Snyder hates. Didn't you read the WSJ interview? Wouldn't matter who their beat guy was, Snyder would try to shut him out.

Posted by: Corkczar | August 30, 2008 2:08 PM | Report abuse

My unsubstantiated guess is he got it from the league office and not from the Redskins.... but it wouldn't surprise me if Vinny called shefler just to make the local anti skin schlub(s) look silly.

Argument for Mix making the roster...
~ Good on Teams
~ Can't teach size (6'5" 235#)
~ Chemistry w/Campbell from their playing days at Auburn
~ Kelly on IR/PUP list
~ Potential Red Zone threat (Hate to dog McMullen as he's a fellow Wahoo, but at times he appears to simmer his receiving gloves in butter)

Argument against Mix making the final 53...
~ appears to be injury prone
~ McMullen & Kelly on the roster
~ did not show much of anything during PSeason

Marcus Mason will be playing for the Jets in a few days. He'll become a pretty good running back. And Betts or Portis will get hurt in mid season. So says my crystal ball.

Might want to chuck that crystal ball out the window....

Mason is not better than Thomas Jones or Leon Washington with Jets...

Mix has never even caught a pass in the regular season for the 'Skins. Don't know why, but he was never in the game as a receiver last year. He must not look any better in practice than he has in preseason.

If the Giants did get him, then poor Mix is back where he started, but without the Super Bowl ring that all his teammates got.

Posted by: Anonymous | August 30, 2008 2:29 PM

The writing was on the wall for Rudi when he hurt the same hamstring in camp that washed out his '07 season and took way too long to recover. As a vested vet, Johnson may have to wait until after Week 1 to catch on elsewhere so his next team doesn't have to guarantee his salary. The Saints could give him a look.
