Practice: Moss, Springs, Betts, Others in Skicaps

From Jason La Canfora:

Practice has begun and Clinton Portis is not on the field. Santana Moss, Marcus Washington, Shawn Springs, Anthony Montgomery and Ladell Betts are wearing skicaps, not helmets, and are limited at best. In fact, Montrgoemery isn't even in pads. We do not see Todd Collins, either.

Malcolm Kelly and Jason Taylor are in full equipment.

Jim Zorn will give an update after practice.

If Betts can play this week, this will greatly help out the O. Alexander isn't cutting it at this time. We need Betts

Sellers, by the way, wore No. 44 in high school. Which reminds me, The Angelo Hall will apparently be No. 32 in D.C. Still waiting for stories of his high school exploits.

Adding a healthy Jason Taylor, healthy Shawn Springs, and DeAngelo Hall to this defense could put this unit over the top. Let's hope Christmas comes early for the Redskins.

I tend to agree about Betts. He stretches the field against defenses better than Alexander. Having him this week would be huge.

Posted by: straub21 | November 10, 2008 1:23 PM | Report abuse

if Betts plays this week do we cut Alexandar right away?

really, he's just a body out there. I could get the yards he has. How many broken tackles does he have in his 15 or so rushes? Like zero?

Posted by: TheTruth11 | November 10, 2008 1:24 PM | Report abuse

Jason Taylor can be the difference in how far this team goes. One of the weaknesses is pass rush, and he obviously can do that when healthy. I still think its Andre Carter's PT that takes the hit if JT comes back.

Even though Taylor has had 2 injuries, he's also not had the rest of his body as beaten up. So he might be fresher in some respects than most DL this far into the season. I do wonder if his preseason leg injury is 100% better.

Not much, but I do remember one 3rd down play where he was hit at line of scrimmage, and fought hard to get 3 yds and a first down.

I tend to agree, though, he doesn't add too much. But I dont want to rush Betts back too soon, either. SA will be fine for us against the Girls.

There has been some mention of DHall returning kickoffs. I think Rock is doing very well there, but I would try DAH on punts. 4.15 speed, shifty, good hands.

Rypien11, I don't want to be misunderstood ... I think Betts has improved (since not being able to convert -- several times -- against the Giants last season), and I agree that beating the Giants requires tuckering out their D-line (and Portis' body doesn't stay fresh all by itself). Which brings me to my next point ... why NOT put the ball into Sellers hands more? Maybe he's not the greatest pass catcher, but the guy CAN run (over people).

How quickly we forget... Mike Sellers scored eight TDs in 2005, 7 of them receiving. The dude has hands... maybe he has just misplaced them of late.

(Sellers' annus mirabilis does kind of remind me, though, of that magical season when noted goon Chris Simon netted 29 freakin' goals for the Caps and was briefly thereafter mistaken for a sniper. He turned out to be who we thought he was.)

(Also, stomping on the "wa" pedal, Chris Simon hails from Wawa, Ontario, and Mike Sellers went to Walla Walla Community College. You can't make this stuff up.)

Look dudes and dudettes: the season is about to spiral down. If we're lucky, we can be the sixth seed in the playoffs. Remember we played like crap against St. Louis (who were waxed yesterday by the freakin' Jets); we struggled against Cleveland (who did beat the G-men, but blew a home game to Denver); and don't forget the mighty Lions (who were laughed out of their own building by the Jags). We couldn't score but six on Pittsburgh. Dallas has lots to prove, and I'm betting the ranch they lay it all on the line Sunday night. We, however, will figure we can turn it on when we need to and a loss will only put us in three-way tie for 2nd. Jason will have another stinker against a top-ranked defense.

"Hines Ward, WR, Pittsburgh. For the third year in a row, the Hines Ward Helping Hands Foundation is hosting a group of bi-racial South Korean children (there are 11 this year, between 6 and 14) in Pittsburgh. The goal is to build confidence, self-esteem and a strong work ethic in the children, who are often looked down upon by some in their homeland who value racial purity.

Ward has found five families in Pittsburgh who play host to the kids for a week, and he eats dinner with them, takes them to a Steelers' game and shows them the sights, like the Carnegie Science Center. Ward is the child of a black American serviceman and a Korean woman, and he moved to Georgia as a young child. His current effort stems from a visit he made to Korea as a hero after he was named the Super Bowl MVP three years ago, and a visit he made to a group home for bi-racial children without parents in their lives.

"They were kids left behind, either by servicemen or moms who couldn't take the prejudice they felt in the society," said Ward. "My mom was an outcast because she went outside her race to have a child. That's one of the reasons she moved. When I was there [after the Super Bowl], everyone praised me for my accomplishments, but they shunned the kids. So I wanted to do something to let bi-racial kids know they can have positive lives.''

The great thing about this year's visit, Ward said, is he'll be able to give the kids one more example of bi-racial success -- the president-elect of the United States, who was born to an African-American father from Kenya and a white mother from Kansas. "Some of these kids feel they have no purpose in life,'' Ward said. "I'm not trying to be Martin Luther King. I'm just trying to tell them they can have great lives, and it's important to get to the kids at an early age. The dropout rate for bi-racial kids in Korea is really high. I just let them know, 'I'm different. It's OK to be different.' ''

That's a little bit of a different view for a guy who's public enemy No. 1 in towns like Baltimore and Cincinnati. "

I'm pretty sure he will replicate that performance. Sure, we are a wounded animal, and wounded animals are often dangerous. But we are an overweight, overpaid, overrated, lethargic wounded animal.

The opposing fans can overrun the stadium because our stadium sucks. It feels like something that a corporate board of directors from East Asia who had never watched football but wanted to make a lot of money would come up with.

That was Jack Kent Cook's idea of a stadium, designed for the well-named Raljon, Md.

They should sell the stadium to some unwitting individual who thinks they can get an expansion team to play in the area.

"Peter King" should be a combination of words that automatically gets sanitized out of the posts, the way other expletives do. After all, there's not much difference between Peter King and the adult word typically used for "poo-poo". Can't a program be written for this?

On Sunday, FedEx Field needs to be crazy, we need to actually give our team an advantage this time...it better be all Redskins fans!! Lots of our players were disapointed last Monday so we need to prove to them that we love our team and we'll support them always. Also, I heard that ESPN 980 will be handing out Burgandy towels...if so, that is AWESOME!!

Anyone remember the seat cushion game in '91? THAT was special.

the Hines Ward Helping Hands Foundation is hosting a group of bi-racial South Korean children (there are 11 this year, between 6 and 14) in Pittsburgh.

talk about a niche market! what of north korean bi-racial kid? if not then does a kid with north korean and south korean parents become bi-racial?

Actually ESPN 980 will be giving out towels to the first 50,000 fans... that sucks! why can't every Redskins fan have one, this is stupid cause then FedEx Field is not filled with towels, it'll just be scattered... why can't they make 40,000 more and give one to everyone?

Posted by: rachel216 | November 10, 2008 3:00 PM | Report abuse

If they do start swinging those things around, I'm gonna be sick.

Instead of terrible towels, it would be weak-aSJK-wipeys.

If opposing fans can tolerate a terrible stadium for 3 hours there is no reason why Redskin fans can't. The only people who have a legitimate complaint are the obstructed view seats. That is a terrible excuse not to go to games if you reside in the area.

Because these are $100-a-seat towels.

Instead of towels, they should give out lanyards. Terrible lanyards. Maybe add whistles. Everyone loves whistles. Yes, terrible whistle lanyards. Make it so.

++++Yeah, the Randy Moss example really makes me hope that his performance this season so far was related to the desperate, poisonous atmosphere that Crazy Al Davis has created in Oakland.+++ Posted by: mgm2rr

Unless he was disguised as Bobby Petrino, it wasn’t Crazy Al that fined Hall 100 large and shipped his butt TOO Oakland. He couldn’t’ play in Atl, couldn’tplay in Oakland, but now everything will be hunky dory here in DC, right. Could be, but it’s like hitting 20. --CORK
+++Its hard to play at 100% for such an aimless team with no clear leadership or continuity in the organization +++

You’re right of course. What should they expect for their $70 million, professionalism? I’m not doubting the atmosphere in Oakland is poisonous, but 52 players WEREN’T cut from that team, and a Good Character Guys wouldn’t phone it in while trying to escape a bad situation.

I hope DH is deliriously happy here and gets all his Mad Skillz and then some back—but it is far from the done deal, slam dunk the Vinny-o-files claim.

Um...guys...why is no one talking about the fact that ESPN is saying that Zorn said that CP is a 50/50 shot at playing on Monday. If CP doesn't play and Betts is still out...the sky is falling.
