Countdown to Kickoff
No Shawn Springs and no Jason Taylor is not a great combination. Even if Brian Westbrook is gimpy, his mere presence alone keeps defenses honest and forces a team ro respect/fear the run game and the screen passes. Andre Carter needs to have a big game and I imagine the Eagles may run at him quite a bit.
Marcus Washington seems to be in the twilight of his time here, and I am eager to see how H.B. Blades holds up as more of a regular, given his size. That's something the team needs to get a read on. I figure they will be in nickel quite a bit, though, which means no Blades in those packages.
Could end up being a big day for Chris Horton, again, too, getting the starting nod. I could see Donovan McNabb testing him more than once. I also wonder if, by halftime, we won't see more of Leigh Torrence on Reggie Brown, though Fred Smoot is slated to start opposite Carlos Rogers.

Wrote on last post that this is bad news. With Westbrook playing, that unfortunately spells bad news and a loss. I was so looking forward to a win today too.

Oh, and F the Notre Dame cowboys!
COMPLAINTS ROLL IN ABOUT BENGALS-COWBOYS AS PRIMARY GAME FOR DOUBLEHEADER
Posted by Mike Florio on October 5, 2008, 11:55 a.m. EDT
Several readers are griping about the fact that the “game” between the 0-4 Bengals and the 3-1 Cowboys has been designated as the primary viewing option for the second half of the CBS doubleheader. With the Ravens and Titans getting ready to get it on, it’s clearly the better game, and some think it should have been moved to 4:15 p.m. EDT.
But here’s the thing. The Cowboys are the NFL’s version of Notre Dame, and CBS gets to televise Dallas only once this year. (The Ravens-Cowboys game later this year would have been aired on CBS if it were a Sunday game; it’s instead a Saturday night game that will be shown on NFLN.)
So for CBS, which during the ’70s and ’80s was the home of so many compelling Cowboys games , there was no doubt that the network’s only return to Dallas in the final year of Texas Stadium would be treated as a big deal, regardless of the quality of the other games.

That makes it much tougher on us, But I'm not ready to concede yet. Let's hit Westbrook with everything we've got!

The plan for Westbrook - tackle him on a running play and have Erasmus James "accidentally" fall on Westbrook's ankles.

Frediefritz, have the Newcastle Brown Ale on ice, and of course the Patron is never far away!

I like your idea so I will watch and hope. Not having Springs is worse to me than having to play against Westbrook.
So much for Springs not missing a NFC East contest, no matter what.

I agree that we will miss Springs. But Iggles don't have the large go-to receiver that Springs can blanket. I still tink Westbrook is the bigger problem for us. He has killed us in the past. Blache has been preparing the D all week to face Westbrook. I'm sure we will be pressing to stop him. I just hope it works.

Speaking of bizarre TV game selections - here in Houston, we get the Tampa Bay/Denver game at 3pm CST. Not sure why we're not getting the Skins game.
Thank goodness for DirecTV

I have a feeling the offense is going to have to put up a lot of points on the board today.

This is going to be a very physical game. I've got my ankles taped. Hope you all are taped up too. Let's snap on our chin-straps, and go to war.

Would be great if Springs could play, but him out is less bad than Jason Taylor out. Tryon can hit big and completes his tackles (for rushing downs).
*** FF post ***
Let the record reflect that, if ESPN would have let me in, I would have benched Braylon Edwards and started Chris Henry.

Relax and prepare for a (hopefully) good game. All your suggested lineups have been incorporated, and Lisa has the whole jinx thing worked out.
With McNabb and Westbrook dinged up and their Oline having some trouble, this seems like as good a time as ever for a win.

Plus the game plans Zorn/Smith and Blache put together for this game. Win for the Skins!

Yeesh, Springs is always hurt.
Posted by: PDiddy | October 5, 2008 12:46 PM | Report abuse
If I were the Eagles I would try and get into a shoot out with the Skins. Up and down, run and gun and make it as wide open as possible.
If the reports are true about the Eagles installing something like 25 blitz packages, that's a good sign as to what they want to do. Run blitz, pass blitz and make Campbell work for everything.
This is a trap game for the Skins. It's going to be a good test for Zorn to see how he handles things.

Why does the front page of the website say Washington is leading the Eagles 7-0?
Is the same editor/intern who let Wilbon's column go out on Wednesday working? Or the one who let Thursday's box score for DC United's game get printed working? Just the facts, WashPo, but make sure you get them right.
Thx,
Jay!
