Pre-Draft Presser

A cynic might call any afternoon pre-draft press conference with an NFL clubs the "Liar's Lunch," because at this time of year in particular it doesn't behoove any club to tips its hand. So at 4 pm Coach Joe and Vinny and Dan Snyder will sit on a stage and field questions from schlubs like me, just like their cohorts around the league will this week at one time or another.

And I don't expect to glean a whole lot from it. Like all execs in pre-draft mode, they will speak glowingly about a player or two, indicate their intent to do whatever it takes to help the team and try to leave every option open. And so it goes. I will try to push the issue on a topic or two, but doubt it'll lead to much, because, again, why would it? The only motivation for teams is to express whatever mix of information/disinformation they believe aids their position, and in a league devoid of much candor from the coach/GM ranks in general, now is not the time for soul-searching honesty with the cameras rolling.

With that said, my biggest question off the day will probably be for the owner. The Redskins must have a couple of hundred media sessions per year involving coaches and players, and annually, this is the only day that Snyder positions himself behind a microphone. For a team that generally prizes free agency well beyond the draft, I found it an interesting aside that the pre-draft presser is his one public appearance. Just sort of wondering why this of all days is the one that he opts to speak? Not calling it good bad or indifferent, just something that, in the words of Arsenio Hall (anyone seen an Arsenio sighting in the last 5 years?), made me go, "Hmmmm."

Doesn't mean much one way or the other, but you figure if you don't speak publicly as a rule, then why do it on one day? Anyway, we'll see what he has to say. I am also interested in what the owner's first-hand impressions were of Calvin Johnson's Pro Day workout he attended.

Other than that, I am open for any suggestions on other questions. And, as a preemptive strike, people, let's keep it clean. No gratuitous shots. Not below-the-belt offerings. Nothing that would make Rodney Dangerfield blush, please.

Anyone in need of a pre-4 pm fix, can check out this blog that Deuce emailed me and I enjoyed reading:

So if they spend a ton of time talking up defense does that mean they're going after Johnson? Ugh!

Posted by: sfskin | April 24, 2007 1:55 PM | Report abuse

Aske them we should expect a competent GM to be in charge of the draft. I hope the Skins do not draft C. Johnson. Tell them to draft a D lineman.

JLaC - Don't hate because you can't get an interview with the Guy. So the F*ck what this is his only appeareance. Danny and you know that we as fans don't care about him and would rather see someone else behind the mic anyway. All you would get from Danny is Spin as if his name was GWB 43........

"The Jets aren't limited by the value of their picks if they decide to trade up. They also have several players - wide receiver Justin McCareins, linebacker Eric Barton and possibly defensive tackle Dewayne Robertson - who could be dealt this weekend."

We need a tackle, maybe we could......

How about JLC slipping "erudite" into the .35 cent version? Erudite in an article about safeties? Wow!

Posted by: OldSchool | April 24, 2007 2:00 PM | Report abuse

Irritating thing got to me today ... work.

Quick one before I have to leave ... from the last post:

"Remember the Tom Friend article that explained how Jacksons tinkering really messed with his head? The separate safety and cornerback meetings? Making Taylor overanalyze and not just 'play'?

Posted by: Sheriff Gonna Getcha | April 24, 2007 11:00 AM"

I asked JLaC about this at the RI pub crawl. People read too much into this. The safeties and the corners met separately before Jerry Gray got there. The source likely was Archuleta complaining about how that bit was different from the Rams. In the Grilliams' D, the corners support the safeties ... and the safeties and linebackers get the spotlight (mostly).

Skin4life, the GMU bball player you were thinking about is Jai Lewis. The NYGiants tried him at TE and it didn't work, so they moved him to O tackle. Now Lewis is trying to get back into bball.

On Carriker v. Anderson, I would opt for Carriker, only b/c he is a couple of inches taller and has more games as a starter (showing he either is durable or can play through injury). The stuff about him being perfect for 3-4 and impliedly not 4-3 seems overstated. The Skins' DE is still a down lineman. If quickness is an issue, Carriker could lose a few pounds. Either guy would be great. Just would be risk-adverse and go for the guy with less boom/bust risk.

With pick #60 (e.g., from swap w/Miami), I'd prefer a ball hawk corner who also has a return game. Skins need more picks (interceptions not draft picks ... well, need that too).

DE seems like the weakest roster spot, but would prefer FA Bobby McCray from Jags over any draft pick.

Ask him why we should trust his football decision-making, specifically his acuity in personnel matters, based on his track record up here.

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | April 24, 2007 2:00 PM | Report abuse

Ask Mr. Snyder what his intentions are with FedEx Field. The rapid detioration and lack of up-keep of the facility is hard to miss. Does he have plans to build a stadium in downtown DC once the Nats stadium is complete?

Posted by: Matt, Baltimore | April 24, 2007 2:01 PM | Report abuse

Ask The Danny when he plans to hire a real GM instead of trusting important football decisions to his incompetent racquetball buddy?

Then, as a follow-up, ask if Vinny lets lets Danny win at racquetball in the days before the draft.

Posted by: Skin Patrol | April 24, 2007 2:10 PM | Report abuse

wow, lots of owner hate. I dont get it. I hate losing more than anyone on here, but geez. The dude made some mistakes early on and probably isnt the nicest guy in the world... but he wants to win. Tries every year to make the best team with the help of our lord and savior Joe Gibbs. It hasnt worked as well as people expect, or as I expected. Maybe Joe never wins the big game for the Skins again. But he sure has earned the right to keep on trying in my book. You could make a legitimate case that Joe Gibbs is the best caoch ever, I seriously believe that.

there are 31 dissapointed teams every year, but they dont all have to throw their owner under the bus with each available opportunity. I sure as hell hope the Skins get the draft right this year and put together something better than that embarrasment we witnessed last year.

Is there anything wrong in the world that you dont blame on Dan Snyder? or V. Cerrato?

Posted by: Inigo Montoya | April 24, 2007 2:16 PM | Report abuse

hmmm..I don't think you can blame Imus on Danny and Vinny...anything else, though..

Ask Snyder if he sleeps in his suit - if he wears anything other than a suit.

Posted by: Vladdrac | April 24, 2007 2:24 PM | Report abuse

I agree with Inigo. The guy's trying as hard as he can to make this team a winner.

Questions:

1. What's his thinking on trading picks from next year's draft for picks in this years?

2. Does he regret past trades of picks and would he characterize any of them (Duckett?) as paying too much for what he got?

3. What are the biggest lessons he's learned as an owner and how do they affect the way he does his job?

4. How does he see us with respect to the salary cap?

Posted by: KK | April 24, 2007 2:26 PM | Report abuse

Draft time is primetime for Snyder that's why he is making his appearance. He'll trade away all his picks on draft day to get his next media guide coverboy Calvin Johnson. After the trade he'll sit there with a Big Cigar lit and a stupid grin on his face knowing he has mortgaged the Skins future again.

Posted by: Brian | April 24, 2007 2:29 PM | Report abuse

I have to agree with Indigo Montoya.

Snyder has flaws as most do, but he is willing to spend what it takes. It's the coaching staff that needs to keep him check.

Maybe thats what we are seeing this off-season...the coaching staff reigning him in a bit and not going for the glamor guy on the block.

Hi Jason,

My questions for the Redskins Brain Trust is this:

How do we know that Calvin Johnson won't be the next Desmond Howard?

Why would you mortgage the future on any wide receiver? (They don't get enough "touches".)

One more question:

5. What does he see as his greatest accomplishments as owner -- on the field and off the field?

Posted by: KK | April 24, 2007 2:34 PM | Report abuse

Ask how PP's rehab is going. And if they feel they are deep enough at safety given the signing of Stoutmire. ALso that Springs could play at safety with Smooter, Macklin and Rodgers playing corner.

He might slip and give us a taste of whther or not Landry is on their radar.

Also, ask about anyone from June 1st cuts they might be interested in?

4. How does he see us with respect to the salary cap?

Posted by: KK | April 24, 2007 02:26 PM

KK - Based on what I can figure, signing any player taken with the #6 pick is going to be difficult based on the current available cap space. Seems to me that all those older guys with large salaries (Springs, Daniels, Griffin, etc.) are at risk unless the Redskins trade down. Moving up in the draft is a ridiculous idea - the cap implications would be even worse.

Posted by: Pulp | April 24, 2007 2:43 PM | Report abuse

One question from the heart of the RI blog;

Does he ever envision changing the team name, and wouldn't such an event be easier to swallow while St Joe is in the house to allay his fears that the product name wont carry the same weight?

Posted by: #6DoubleEL | April 24, 2007 2:43 PM | Report abuse

I would like you to ask him about:
Offense:
1) Offensive play calling responsibilities...where does Al Saunders end and Gibbs start?
2) I also want to know about Al Saunders Playbook...did it get shorter?
3) Is Jason Campell better suited for Saunders gameplan by being more of a pocket passer?
4) What is the balance of expected carries going to look like between Portis and Betts?
5) Are we going to see both in at the same time for any significant amount of time?

Defense:
1) What did Williams see as our biggest problem last year?
2) What adjustment can we expect to see this year?
3) Anybody from last year expected to really step up and make a much bigger contribution this year?
4) What is the plan to force more turnovers?

Washington Rockets, like the "rockets' red glare"? Haha, that would irritate the B'more fans. A rocket on the helmet in place of the spear, and a new stadium in the shape of Fort McHenry would be just about right. In the off-season, Snyder could sell guided tour packages to the "Fort McHenry Memorial" so tourists wouldn't have to go all the way to B'more to see the real thing.

Almost forgot - Casey Bramlet looks a little shaky in the Europa league. His release is very low, from the hip, and his passes are prone to being batted down. His on-field decision-making process also appears to be very slow. Are the Redskins going to draft a quarterback prospect/project with a late round pick? Brunell and Collins are pretty old and should be upgraded (replaced).

OK, I'm actually serious with this suggestion for these questions:

What formula do he and the other "decision makers"use when evaluating a trade offer, say,for example, from the Bears?

Was there a calculus involved in determining that Briggs and wasn't worth the #6 and Rocky?

What would be worth trading down for?

Is he making the effort not to try to outspend the league this year or is the restraint coming from elsewhere?

That's all I got.

JLC: Dan has major flaws, including the fact he has yet to learn from Mr. Cooke that the best thing a great owner can do is hire great people, including a great GM, write the checks, and get out of the way. That said, on behalf of many fans you should thank him for ignoring politically correct idiots like your colleague Mike Wise who say he should change the name of the team simply because someone, somewhere may be offended by it. The day they change the name, which is used in this context as a term of praise and honor, is the day I refuse to renew my season tickets. Hang tough Dan and go Skins!

I say keep the pressure on the ownership & front office. You should hold them responsible. It's not hard to see the mistakes they make repeatedly. Give credit to ownership for *wanting* to win, but he has to figure out *how* to build a winner. You need to hire a real GM and give him room to operate. Pronto.

Ask him why he pulled the bait-and-switch on longtime season tickets holders to get them to move from good upper deck seats to "limited view" lower deck seats. Using the promise of "will move you to better seats in the lower bowl within 3 years" and then moving the seats up two rows after 3 years but still in the limited view section.

Then disallowing any further seat moves requests. Even when club seat owners are being offered additional premium lower level seats as incentive to re-up their club seats. I even called as a "club seat owner" and got the offer! When I asked why they told limited view people that there were no seats to move to, I was told "oh, well the lower bowl seats that are open in the lower bowl come from a different pool of seats that aren't available to general admission season ticket holders."

This guy is a greedy, slimy rat who doesn't care at all about the Redskins or their fans, except for trying to increase exposure of the Redskins as a brand. The fanbase is deteriorating and he is testing the most loyal of fans. People sell their tickets on stubhub and the rival teams' fans snap them up and take away even more of the hometeam fan experience. There is no reason to be a season ticket holder. You can go scalp better seats than what you pay for, and you don't have to buy preseason games to boot!

We are getting rid of our season tickets after having them in the family for 30 years.

Washington Candirus it is.

Steve, your comment speaks for itself.

As for the name change, the only thing as bad as changing the Skins name was getting rid of the Bullets based on some lame excuse about wanting to reduce violence. It was all about selling more merchandise. What a sham. Plus the new name is demeaning to Walt "the Wizard" Williams and every other true Wizard on the planet.

#6DoubleEL, Pierson Prioleau appears to be fine. I've seen him interviewed on Comcast several times now and he said he is on schedule and ready to go. He also played in Mark Brunell's charity golf tournament this week.

Speaking of which....everyone PLEASE live Mark Brunell alone. He is not starting, he took a huge cut in pay to stay with the Skins, he knows the system (in case Campbell gets hurt) and he has been a great mentor to Campbell.

The Celebrity Golf Tournament he held this week was to raise money for children with Leukemia. There were many children at the event and he was hanging out with them, talking with them, etc. He is a nice guy with a caring heart so please enough Brunell bashing!

The Washington Red Glare!

As in "rocket's red glare", so we use the rocket logo instead of the spear. (Also kind of a weird word play on the "Red Scare" of the 1950s, based in DC.) We get to keep the R from the Redskins, as well as the poetic meter (2 syllables). The uniforms could be a brighter red, if desired. Last but not least, we get the National Anthem as our personal "fight song".

Finally! The real "America's Team"! The Washington Red Glare!

Here's a hunch about the only thing that would convince Danny Boy to change the team's nickname: becoming the first-ever NFL team named for a sponsored product.

Don't laugh -- you know Danny and every other opportunistic team owner took note last year when the MLS New Jersey MetroStars were 're-branded' as Red Bull New York.

We'll probably see similar moves from 'cash-strapped' teams in the NBA and NHL before long. And from small-market teams in MLB.

Far-fetched? Not so long ago, no stadium had a sponsor's name attached, and it looked like disgusting profiteering when stadium sponsorships started showing up, but now almost ALL pro stadia are sponsored.

In marketing -- Danny's field, lest we forget -- the brand's the thing... and enough dollar signs from a sponsor could convince Danny to sacrifice the 'equity' in the Redskins brand.

The Washington Pepsis?

I'm just sayin'.

Shawn Springs - that is the question. If the Skins cut or trade him, the secondary will have another poor year. Smoot and Rodgers are both #2 corners. Even if Spring only plays 8 games b/c of injury, he is worth it.

As for draft, I agree with Jason. Go with D-line (if Skins can't trade down which is first choice)

I don't understand this talk about going with free agency or trade for D-lineman if Skins don't pick one. THERE WILL BE NO STRONG PLAYERS AVAILABLE IN THOSE PLACES.

No one wanted to touch what the Ohio State Michigan game and the Rutgers vs. Louisville game?

What do they have in common?

It's easy, folks.
Everyone is so excited about Okoye and Branch as our iron-clad DT.

If we do draft one I hope he turns out to be Dave Butz, but folks Ohio State ran up the middle on Branch, and Rutgers ran the ball on Louisville so calm yourselves.

How dominant were either of these guys in those two games? Not very.... in fact they weren't at all. Rutgers and OSU both gained many yards rushing. Hey WVU racked up yards rushing vs. Louisville as well!

CC, I think the smoke/mirrors is all the talk about actually providing the appearance of using the #6 pick. Unless Oakland takes CJ, the Skins will be able to trade down with #6 b/c the Browns will only be able to pick either Peterson or Quinn ... the other will fall to #6 and enable a trade down.

Posted by: dcsween | April 24, 2007 4:50 PM | Report abuse

Yeah, So I say we are going to trade back, take a different safety than Landry, and Try to find DL in round 2 or 3, whichever we get.

Then in the later rounds we will look for OL, since they said it was a deep draft for OL, and add depth elsewhere from there.

From God's mouth to my lips... or something like that.

Us 30, we got good jobs too. We get paid for posting. At the end of the day we show our posts to our bosses. If it's enough we can go home. If not, well, we have to post overtime on Marc Fisher's blog.

Posted by: KK | April 24, 2007 5:01 PM | Report abuse

Lisa, I can't think about work at a time like this ... we have 50k posts to hit before Roger says go.

#6LL, what I heard was best player available wherever they are whenever they get there. IF (and I say IF, so don't crush me Lisa) IF the Skins threats to Springs about the consequences of not restructuring come true, then I'm wondering whether the weakest spot on the roster doesn't shift from the one currently filled by Philip Daniels over to the #1 or # 2 CB spot. Rogers and Smoot are fine, but are they great? Macklin is on a one-year trial (actually, I don't even remember the duration of Smoot's deal). Though this might sound repetitious, the positions of really want still seem to be filled by the following guys -- and thus, there might be a need for upgrade.

DE - Phil
DT - Cornelius (Golston?)
S - Fox/Prioleau

Now IF things change at #1 CB, then add CB.

If, however, the Raiders pick CJ, then it seems that the trade value of #6 diminishes (except for teams who want Landry ... and it sounded btwn the lines like the Skins THEY want him).

How has no one posted this bit from Pasquarelli's article about safeties today?

On the topic of LaRon Landry:

"He's like a Swiss Army knife," said Washington Redskins defensive coordinator Gregg Williams. "He can do a ton of things for you. And the more he does, the more you're going to find for him to do. He can be a special player."

Posted by: dcsween | April 24, 2007 6:06 PM | Report abuse

More, from Landry himself:

"I've played free safety and strong safety, played like a linebacker, walked out and played the wide receiver in the slot, like a third [cornerback]," said Landry, a two-time All-SEC selection and one of the nation's most hotly recruited players coming out of high school. "I've been down 'in the box,' backed off in coverage, been in man and zone. And I did it in a big-time conference, at a big-time school and with national championships on the line. No bragging or anything, but there isn't a lot I haven't been asked to do."

Hola, party people...

Methinks that we isn't going to realize our Noble Quest of 50,000 by Draft Day. That is, at the miserable and paltry rate we're going. But I have a plan.

I'm going to need 36, maybe 37, diehard Redskins Insiders. And of those Insiders, I'm going to ask that each and every one of you make a simple pledge to post one comment per hour per day from here on out.

That's just 24 fast and easy comments per day, or a total of about 89. If you want to do them all at once, that works. If you want to spread them out over the course of the day, that works too. And the best part... it won't cost you a thing!!

So what do you think? Is that something you'd be interested in?

Just off the top of my head I can think of quite a few diehards that are more than able. The question is, are they willing?

Nate, I think you should be in charge of rounding up the troops, coming up with 36-37 dependable names (including mine), and we'll see if we can't blog our f***ing guts out and kick past 50 grand by 11:00 am on Saturday, April 28, 2007.

Oh, and Nate, you'll report directly to Cyn Cyty from here on out.

(This is # 1 for me.)

You know, picking up the theme of names derived from corporate sponsors from earlier in the thread:

Why is 50,000 so important? Sacralige, I know, but I don't read all of the posts here - did I miss an offer? Has Danny agreed to hire a GM if we hit 50,000?

If you don't make 50K, Darrell Green doesn't run down Tony D, and Tony D scores.

And if Dan Snyder spoke more, JLC would criticize him for being too outspoken as an owner.
