P.M. Practice Ramblings (Updated)

About 50 of the 80 guys in camp, including veterans like Shawn Springs, Marcus Washington, Demetric Evans, Mike Sellers, James Thrash and Todd Yoder, are taking part in this afternoon's special teams practice.

All of the wide receivers, except Antwaan Randle El and Santana Moss, are practicing. Randle El is the top punt returner, but coming off his knee surgery it would seem that the Redskins are taking a chance there. I also am hearing that Jim Zorn is not averse to having Moss return in certain situations as well.

As for the punting competition; those guys are not hitting that many balls, with the Jugs machine saving their legs.

...

The Redskins have been playing a lot of press-man coverage with their corners early in camp, more than what seemed to be the norm. Playing man is nothing new around here, but there was no cushion being given at all. Fred Smoot and Shawn Springs, the starting corners, have loved it, 'cuz now they're even closer to the WRs to beat them up a bit and also to ensure all of their smack talk is audible.

Smoot said he expects the team to play a ton of it this season, and that CB Coach Jerry Gray is stressing press technique. I asked Jim Zorn if the prevalence of the coverage was just to give the offense that look in practice, and he said, no, that he figured the Redskins would be a pressing team. Not 100 percent of the time, of course, but given the size and skills of their corner, the enhanced pass rush with Jason Taylor and the presence of a ball-hawk, head-hunter like LaRon Landry behind the corners at safety, it makes a lot of sense.

The CBs have to get a solid jam on the WRs and derail them from their route - within the ever-shrinking legal limits of doing so - and it's definitely a high-gamble tactic (if the corner whiffs you've got a streaking WR going deep all alone), but it can be smothering if done properly. Makes for some fun battles during 11-on-11s as well, especially when the kid WRs are out there.

Other Stuff: Demetric Evans is 10 pounds heavier than a year ago and is looking very sharp thus far. If he keeps this up, he will find his way into the rotation at DE - perhaps more on the left side on running downs and to spell Jason Taylor - as well as coming up the gut as an interior pass rusher. Zorn envisions getting Erasmus James into the mix - his injury permitting - to give the Skins a very capable four-man DE rotation (along with starting RE Andre Carter) ... Zorn has utilized fairly traditional drills with his QBs thus far, but says he will unveil a neat, quirky one Thursday to simulate the impact of getting sacked. He wouldn't give too many details, but I look forward to seeing it unfold. The famous dodge-ball drill - to simulate darting around the pocket to avoid the rush - will make a return shortly as well, Zorn said ... A week or so ago I wrote about Springs's rigorous boxing routine, and his trainer, Mark Craig. Craig works with the Redskins trainers on Fridays during the regular season, doing boxing and sparring drills, and guys like Stephon Heyer, who looks way more sculpted than he did at any time in 2007, and Matt Sinclair have credited it with helping their strength, agility and conditioning ...

The afternoon practice is geared toward special teams and the youngsters on this roster; for the most part veterans are off the rest of the day, but guys like James Thrash, Evans and Marcus Washington - veterans all of them - were on the bus that pulled back to the Redskins Park for practice. Those guys are special teams stalwarts - though the days of Marcus being a part of every coverage and return squad are likely over - and leaders on that side of the ball, and looks like they will be practicing this afternoon. ... Still drizzling and overcast but nothing too bad yet. ... Former Redskin WR Mike Espy, who blew out his knee in the 2006 and 2007 preseason, spent the summer working out with Springs and Craig. Mike told me that he has attracted interest from Baltimore, St. Louis and Buffalo, but obviously realized with 80-man rosters set he wasn't going to be there for the opening of any NFL camp. He continues to work hard and says his knees feel better than ever. This is a game of attrition and soon enough there will be clubs in need of receivers, and he's hoping to get the call somewhere. ... Promise to address the logo-less helmets for rookies tomorrow.

Redskins Training Camp: Day 3
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

John Keim
WarpathInsiders.com Jul 22, 2008

John Keim reports on his observations from the Redskins' third day of Training Camp under Jim Zorn. Read about who got lit up by Blades, which rookie some veterans really like and which DE has been standing out.

...Jason Taylor's first day as a Redskin was rather uneventful, a welcomed change after the first two days in Ashburn. Taylor went against Jon Jansen one time in a nine-on-nine drill and Jansen was able to stop him.

When the two matched up again later, Jansen jumped early. That's a five-yard loss attributable to being so antsy to get a jump on Taylor.

Later, against Todd Wade, Taylor showed why he's so good. His hands are fantastic, making up for his slight frame. He gets his hands inside so fast, enabling him to gain leverage - even against larger opponents. It'll serve him well against the run, though that's still considered a weakness.

Guys like Taylor are difficult because of their quick first steps. What happens is this: offensive linemen end up reaching too wide to contain them, allowing Taylor to get his hands inside.

...One veteran, when asked if any young players had stood out to him, dropped one name: Chad Rinehart. Really thinks he can develop into a quality backup this year and step into the lineup next year. So far, Rinehart looks pretty good in the run game. But at times he still stands too upright in pass blocking. He's working on the left side for the most part.

...Defensive tackle Anthony Montgomery is working extra hard on trying to stay low. His main problem in the past is that he'll engage blockers, then try to look over them to see where the ball, or quarterback, is. And once he does that the opponent wins.

...H.B. Blades lit up Clinton Portis this afternoon, leading Fred Smoot to shout out, "That's football all right!"

...Demetric Evans has stood out among the defensive linemen. He looks a bit quicker and stronger. He's batted down passes, snuffed out screens and gotten inside tackles. One day after knocking Jansen on his back side, he did the same to Todd Wade today in a one-on-one drill. He's becoming a savvy veteran.

...The coaches are thrilled with the performance of Randy Thomas and Jon Jansen on the right side of the line. They look like they're ready to play right away. Jansen looks a half-step slower - or still working up to full speed -- but he insists that's not the case.

...End Chris Wilson hasn't shown much in camp. Gets stopped too easily. Still very slight, but has not advanced as a rusher.

...Wilson got mad after a play in the one-on-one drill vs. Devin Clark. Not sure what happened, but Wilson got mad and went after Clark. DL coach John Palermo yelled at Wilson, "That's not him! That's not him!" In other words, it wasn't his fault Wilson ended up on the ground. It was Wilson's.

But this led to some barking back and forth between the lines, with Kedric Golston yelling, "You all just had one. Just pipe down." Apparently, the OLinemen were upset about a previous play. And one player shouted out, about Wilson, "He called him the N word!"

Just as the Washington Post has four or five guys writing about the Redskins, Yahoo sports has a bundle writing about pro football teams. And just as the Post guys have different views, so do the columnists on Yahoo. When Jasno writes something, it's not "The Post said..." And when Mike Silver writes something, it's not "Yahoo sports thinks that..."

Who cares. JLC has the news blog thing pretty much on lockdown, but when you add in the redskins.com blog and what you can get at extremeskins, there's really no need for yet another set of eyes saying the same thing.

Your thumbnail report on the young wide receivers, from Jasno himself:
They look young and raw for the most part. They break wrong on routes sometimes or stem off too soon. They are just starting to learn and show natural ability, but have a ways to go.
They've got to get into some games and get a few weeks of daily practices under their belts to even start to evaluate them.
Guys like Devin Thomas and Malcolm Kelly even a year from now will still be relative babies. This is just the start and people need to be realistc with expectations about how quickly they will develop.

Not only does he ignore the haters, he ignores everyone. Even the kiss-ups like you and me.

Don't know if you remember the Megskin Guide to RI (it's on the wiki) but she reported then that he read every comment, and it was true.

When I saw him at the shabingus he said he'd stopped reading the comments -- too much anger and hate. He said he regretted it because he used to get good ideas for stories from the blog but that it was just not worth it any more. (I'm paraphrasing here).

I'm guessing that Cindy gives him an overview from time to time -- "Yeah, comments are still the same" -- and maybe a few highlights. But, Cindy, please let me (us) know if I've got this wrong.

The thing about FB an Twitter is that you want to deliver news to the places where people are. It's not a replacement for one thing, it's just another mode to use. You're already doing SMS, so doing Twitter is a no-brainer (same text blurb). FB is a little more involved, but I'm confident you can do it. You're not replacing the blog, you're augmenting it.

Posted by: P Diddy | July 23, 2008 2:50 PM | Report abuse

Cindy, expectations are pretty high for a second round pick. Not only that, but the Redskins really need a WR that can get off the line. Both Moss and Randal-El do fine in the slot, but have trouble with jams at the line of scrimmage.

I love James Thrash, but he's just not fast enough (anymore, if ever) to beat DBs, so the other WR drew double coverage all the time.

Hopefully JZ's offense is relatively simple and these guys can run the right route and make catches in traffic. That should open things up.

BTW, there's a good chance that CP will have a monster year. Check out his stats from 07 catching the football. VERY impressive, and he should get a lot of swing passes in the West Coast offense. And look at the backs who've done well running the ball in that offense (Craig, Alexander, Watters, etc.) Many of them had the same running style as CP, and it's more like the offense he was in while with the Broncos. Averaging 5+ YPC.

I'm excited! If this team stays healthy, and one or two of the rookie WR's become productive, the Burgundy and Gold could be very good.

The REAL problem -- despite all this whining about talent, defense, draft, etc. -- is the schedule is absolutely brutal. 10 wins is a mighty accomplishment...

Posted by: DanPatrick | July 23, 2008 2:51 PM | Report abuse

Ummm......JLC's football knowledge is very weak, so I hope quoting someone else's evaluation of the WR's rather than giving his own.

He's just not capable or qualified.

No one said expectations aren't or shouldn't be high for a second-round pick or that none of the Redskins' second-round picks are any good. They are developing; it's day 4 of camp. It just takes time "up here."
I agree that the first five weeks of the schedule are brutal, especially for a new head coach. But if they can hover around .500, it could turn when they get three home division games the second half.
And, yes, TE I do share your thoughts with Jasno.

I would expect by end of their second seasons bother to combine for 1000 yards, depending on who else is still at the position. For this year my numbers guess is.

Moss 800-1000
El 800-1000
Thomas 300-400
Kelly 300-400
Cooley 800-1000
Davis 200-400

It's hilarious. Matt Terl, the blogger, can't even cheat right! The fake comment from "Jay Bailey" had a link directly to Redskins.com, just like Matt Terl's name does.

Isn't that pathetic? Do yourself a favor -- drop by and tell him what a pathetic little turd he is. Today he's blogging about doing the Skins laundry. Unbelievable.

Well, I'm sure Danny Snyder will find a way to make a buck from it.

Maybe if he invites people to a social circle j*** every now and again like is done here than he'll be popular too!!!!

I don't see it as a "cop out punk move" but a as rational response to unrelenting, irrational and misplaced anger and rage.

I don't think he meant negative toward him. He was referring to all the anger and hate -- the carping negativity -- of everyone toward everyone else up here, most of which is entirely unrelated to anything that he posted or even to Redskins football. At its best its jibba jabba, but it's not at its best often enough.

You and I each attract a lot of it, and I don't much look forward to reading it and I can see where Jasno or anyone else would get tired of it.

Posted by: freakzilla | July 23, 2008 3:15 PM | Report abuse

Don't get me wrong, I think they got some pretty good talent in this draft. I just expect to see one of the rookie WRs on the field early in the year in a 3 wideout set, and when given a chance to catch a ball they do so. So that's my expectation.

Those 3 home games at the end, a lot will depend on how the first part of the season goes. I heard a lot from Smilin' Al about how "close" the offense was to being really good, but they never went from "close" to "there".

Stay healthy. Keep it simple. Execute.

Hopefully JZ was the kind of QB that didn't think of themselves as a "genius", like the ol' Ball Coach. Or the kind of a coordinator that thought the same thing, like Smilin' Al.

After all, "a man's got to know his limitations"

DanPatrick...

Successful rookies are most prevalent at RB. Next would likely be OL/DL/LB in some order.

It's always tough for rookie QBs, WRs, CBs and MLBs (since they're sort of the QB of the D). Safeties are probably somewhere in the middle.

Personally, I don't use Twitter. But lots of nerds do. It's kind of like a personal blog, but limited to 140 characters ("micro-blogging"). People use it to describe what they're up to at any given moment. You can subscribe to people's Twitter feeds if you find them (or the person) interesting enough. Some folks don't see the appeal of personal blogs or Twitter, but they're not getting it. Rather than spamming 100 of your friends about the first time your kid rolls over (of whom, probably 95 don't give a SJK), you just post it and people who care get to read it, people who don't care can ignore it. Pretty simple.

I am addicted to Facebook and use Facebook's status feed as my Twitter.

As for how it relates to here: if the WashPo Twittered: "Redskins trade for Jason Taylor. Send 2nd and 6th picks in 2009 to Miami.", that would show up on my laptop, my iPhone, etc. That would actually be useful. If they Twittered: "Jason La Canfora posted 'PM practice ramblings'", that would get annoying.

Well your right about the crappy computer and the Monkey part.

Posted by: Anonymous | July 23, 2008 4:12 PM | Report abuse

I'd agree: RB is a great position for a rookie to have an impact. I'd put DE next, then FS/SS, then OLB, then PK.

WR should be somewhere in the middle: the position is enough about talent that you should be able to shine early, but scheme is important. If the offense has a lot of reads, then it's going to take time before QB and WR are on the same page. Maybe forever, as in the case of Michael Westbrook. But if the scheme is good, the rookie WR gets single coverage and opportunities to make a play.

At the bottom of the list, OL and QB. OL it's easier to screw things up than to make things better. Even if you're not getting beat, the wrong read or slide mess things up, sometimes not obviously.

While the subject matter is football, the comments have long strayed from football. Now that the season is in full swing and everyone is back from whatever it is people do when there is no football on TV (sit in a corner and shiver uncontrollably? drink to excess?), expect that to continue. Don't like it, keep scrolling down.

Punters are looking good right now Nate. Zorn first had them getting drinks for the other players. Frost won that part by driving to 7-11 for some Gatorade, the rookie just got a think of water, classic rookie mistake, but after that Zorn said "He is a great kid, tons of intelligence, but he made a mistake there and did the easy thing over the better thing, but the kid's here to learn and I think he did learn something, and that what I like to see".

Purple Haze, what's your deal, dude? Is that all you got, ad hominem attacks on people who post comments up here?

Dullsville, man.

Most of the people posting up here are pretty up front about how silly this blog community can be and how dumb, dopey, wrongheaded, uninformed, confused, dubiously opinionated, easily distracted, drunk, stoned, in need of medication or maps, and/or whatevs each of us can be.

I admit as much every time I post another stupid comment. It's right there in the fine print.

So what I'm saying is, while it may feel like you're posting hard-hitting attacks that expose the Truth (ahem) about this blog community, they read as pretty redundant.

Bring something to the table, dude! Mix it up with good stuff, not this lame-o attacky sort of stuff! I know you got it in ya, since you care enough to read and post comments. Join the fun, is all I'm suggestin'

OK, my offseason report card on the Spaghetti Gang is in ... and surprisingly, they get some pretty good grades

Coaching search: D Given the candidates out there, Zorn wasn't first choice. Still, Zorn may be an inspired choice. So while the search was ugly, the result is TBD

Coaching changes: B+. Zorn needed to hire his own guys and did. A lot of guys are doing more than they ever have before, so another time will tell. On defense, we lost a great DC, but Blache is quality and most of the D coaches stayed from a very good staff. On offense, keeping Bugel was easily the best thing that could have happened. And it did.

FA: A. Quite simply, the guys that sucked the most are gone. They didn't screw up the payroll which was a huge plus. The result? We could make the major trade for #55. Taylor is a tad on the expensive side, but if he plays a few years at the level he has been playing at, the Spaghetti Gang will look like geniuses

Draft: C+. Its always hard to tell with a draft. It could go either way. The two big WRs make a lot of sense. An OL in round 3 makes a lot of sense. The rest of it? Not so much. Almost nothing at the positions we are aging in most quickly. A second round pick for a TE when you already have a young Pro Bowler under contract. A QB? A punter? Missed chances.

Continuity: B No GG, but the Skins have more returning starters than pretty much anyone in the NFL. Its the changes in coaching and the offensive philosophy that result in a B. Of course, last year's offense did need changing ... so total continuity would have been a bad thing.

Overall, a B. Much better than I expected, especially given the track record and the problematic coaching search.

Al Zeke,

I'd be more generous on the draft -- B+ or A-. Trading down was brilliant and yielded great results. I liked the punter and the QB, especially the punter. They were late picks so it's not clear what we gave up.

On the TE it does seem odd, but I'm willing to wait and see how they use him, how well he plays and, especially, how well Calais Campbell plays. There was a lot of hate for him before the draft and a lot of love now that he's not a Redskin. Weird.

Foxsports Power Rankings-

10 -- Washington: Everyone's talking about Philly, New York and Dallas in the NFC East, but it's Washington that returns 21 starters from last year's NFC wild-card team. Add in six-time Pro Bowl defensive end Jason Taylor from Miami, free agent Erasmus James from Minnesota and gritty safety Stuart Schweigert -- and a hit-or-miss defense from a year ago suddenly becomes one of the league's most dynamic. On offense, Jim Zorn brings a new offense and a new philosophy, and the bevy of new receiving options selected in April's draft give Jason Campbell some receivers above six feet to pass to. Want to talk sleeper NFC champion contenders? Look no further than the 202. Camp: Ashburn, Va.

I wonder if SI's Banks needs a new calender, I don't think he realises last year was 2007-

"The Redskins? They finished far back in the NFC East in terms of sacks, with just 19, or considerably less than half of the average of the other three teams in the division. Defensive end Andre Carter led Washington with just six sacks, and his fellow end, Phillip Daniels, was second with three"

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/writers/don_banks/07/21/redskins/index.html

Corkczar,

Thanks for SHOUTING back at me. I'm sticking with my post as you should yours - we shall see come playoff time if your on the bandwagon then.

Brandon Jacobs is two games. Our - blasted homophones - corners should be fine for that. As for...

OR ARE YOU OLD ENOUGH TO REMEMBER DEION, BRUCE SMITH, BRUNELL, DUCKETT, ARCH, AND THE LAST ENTERTAINMENT SPECIALIST BRANDON LLOYD

Of course any fan would remember that but since trading the 3rd for Kendall, this front office has made solid moves, 10 picks - all of whom have a decent shot at making the team and all of whom provide DEPTH at key positions.

Davis is an upgrade to Yoder. IF, Cooley (best player per position on offense) goes down now the drop off is significantly less. Big WRs were needed since 50/50 starting being a regular at 14th street. All the other guys can make the team as back ups and the punter could be HUGE change of field position. Solid draft.

Next year, there is no 2nd rounder and maybe no 4th, but trading out of 1st, always a wise thing at the bottom half of the round, would fill those slots and provide the future DT, C, and starting G we will need in 2010.

In my personal opinion and from someone who has served in the US Army; I think the people WHO ARE IN CHARGE are total and utter douchebags. Again, the indivduals who are in charge. Everyone knows that the SOLDIERS and Non-Comissioned Officers (E-6 and below anyway) are the backbone of the Army.

From Yahoo! sports...

Army orders Lions draft pick Campbell to withdraw:

DETROIT (AP)--Caleb Campbell will not get a chance to play for the Detroit Lions because of a change in military policy.

Campbell was a seventh-round draft pick for the Lions in April. At the time, Army policy would have allowed the West Point graduate to serve as a recruiter if he made the team.

But a subsequent Department of Defense policy has superseded the 2005 Army policy.

In a letter to Lions president Matt Millen dated Wednesday, U.S. Army Lt. Col. Jonathan P. Liba wrote that Campbell has been ordered to give up professional football for "full-time traditional military duties."

Liba wrote that 2nd Lt. Campbell may ask to be released from his active duty obligations in May 2010.

Liba said Campbell was allowed to enter the draft "in good faith."

okay listen PH, i know this blog sometimes can be clickish and that can be very intimidating like going to a new school...but everyone's all cool up here. hardly any of the regs. shared my venom of the mannings or the venom i have for snyder and saunders. but after all the debate (read cursing like turret syndrome) and going back and forth we come to realize that we all want the same thing, that's why we're here. we all want the skins to do well.

listen, this is the only place left in town for unbiased (read pro snyder) reporting on the skins. jason can put his own spin on things but he does report and we can make up our own minds wether he's accurate or not. he was the best source for jason taylor death reporting. he was the only one in town who didn't prejudge even when goaded by tv media schlubs.

there have been many like you who get intimidated by the clickishness of this blog and start picking fights but they don't last. and i'm sorry if people have ignored you. eventually if you post enough you'll start getting blog cred.

this blog has endured far worse, better wit, more intelligent insults than you/yours. we're not going anywhere. btw ITA stands for "ignore the a-hole/ss". we've learned to ITA and they eventually go away. even boofer left town. there is no way in he-l-l you can be more annoying than boofer.

so dude just chill and sit back and relax and don't get personal. it's not cool. but if you're having some personal issues that you want to talk about we are here to help. usually for those kinds of talk it's better to come here around midnight that way you can get one on one attention with any of the regulars up here. cricket, sfskin and dorf are great for that. and sometimes me...but not alot since i picked up a online gambling addiction.

This may be nothing more than someone drinking kool-aid, but was nice to read this type of write-up on my Skins!!

Especially the following:

Soon it will be time to find out what a Redskins pass rush led by two double-digit sack machines can do to NFC East quarterbacks. They will be chasing a hobbling Donovan McNabb, renowned choke artist Tony Romo, and turnover prone Eli Manning.

McNabb is the only viable threat but his knees and shoulders are certainly not what they used to be. Looking back on their performances against the Redskins in the 2007 season it's apparent that Eli Manning (57.9 quarterback rating) was ineffective, and Tony Romo was only pedestrian (79.5 quarterbacks rating).

Posted by: Curzon417 | July 23, 2008 11:51 PM | Report abuse

Curzon,

Will believe it when I see it. Until then, this trade looks good on paper only.

If we can't manage to beat the Gints, Iggles, and Girls at home, it's all for naught.

Posted by: Chia Pet | July 23, 2008 11:57 PM | Report abuse

One, keeping him from the giants has to count for something. Second, we needed a DE and if we get two solid years from him, then what was traded is worth it.

Not winning against those three teams is not necessarily because of this trade. We lost to them last year, so I can't agree with that statement.

Our offense will be the determining factor on our success, but the to me JT upgrades our DL and secondary.

Posted by: Curzon417 | July 24, 2008 12:05 AM | Report abuse

Jason Taylor is billed as a difference maker.

If we can't take care of business at home against our divisional rivals with Taylor lined up at DE, then...same difference.

I want to see sacks, forced fumbles, QB hurries that result in untimely turnovers and stalled drives, for the opposition, for a change, for the love of all things Redskin.

Posted by: Chia Pet | July 24, 2008 12:11 AM | Report abuse

Skins defense was good in 2007. During the final 4 games, it was outstanding. Its the same group, except that Jason Taylor is there instead of Philip Daniels. Plus the two youngest guys during that run, Landry and Doughty, are both more experienced. On the defensive side, no reason the Skins shouldn't be top 10, top 5 is clearly within reach. Watch for Griffin and his health. If he stays healthy, it takes two to block him in the middle. Which means the rest of the line should have a lot of fun.

All the question marks are on the offense. New coaches, new offense. Top playmaking WR coming off a disaster of a season in 2007. O-line health issues.

I need two turntables and a chia pet!

Posted by: beck | July 24, 2008 12:29 AM | Report abuse

If healthy, the Skins d-line could be the best in football. Griffin, Taylor and Carter are all very good players. The 'weakness' is at DT, where guys like Montgomery will have to step up.

Overall, the LBs are good. Fletcher is terrific. He was absolutely robbed of a Pro Bowl spot and understands how to lead players on the field. I'm guessing Rocky (or his spot) will be a challenge, though.

The secondary of Springs, Smoot, Landry and Doughty is among the best in football. Not drinking Kool Aid. Its a solid group, no weak links. As a unit, its more important to be without any weak links than to have a great player (unless he is Darrell Green great).

The Skins also have depth on the defense, except at LB.

Philly, NYG and Dallas will all have a rough time with the Skins.

Posted by: AL Zeke etc | July 24, 2008 12:31 AM | Report abuse

Exactly what I am thinking. With the offensive plays we used last year, excluding the last 4 games of the reg season, I believe that the 2008 offense will be better. We were way too predictable and conservative and coupled with our injuries had our D on the field for too many plays.

Personally, I cannot see that we will be any worse on offense this year, so I expect to not lose so many close games this season. If our D is "only" as good as last year, we should see 10 wins.

Redskins Training Camp: Day 4
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

John Keim
WarpathInsiders.com Jul 23, 2008

How has Colt Brennan been looking? How about Justin Tryon or Chad Rinehart? John reports on these guys and many more in this, his Day 4 Analysis.

...Jason Taylor worked on both sides of the line today, first lining up on the right side with Andre Carter on the left side. Clearly they'll use Taylor all over the place at times.

...Rookie tackle Chad Rinehart has looked very good. He handled Taylor for the most part this morning. Taylor is obviously not at peak form - one NFL source called him a slow-starter, for what it's worth - but Rinehart did a very nice job. He still sets up a little too upright for me, but his footwork is sound.

...Taylor did get inside Jon Jansen on one stunt. But Jansen has fared well against him thus far.

...Chris Wilson seems no different than last year. Rinehart handled him easily. My Favorite Rookie also drove out Carter on one play. He's playing exactly the way some draft experts told me he would.

...Pass of the day: Jason Campbell hitting Antwaan Randle El on a corner route in the end zone. Randle El dragged his feet inbounds to complete the 25-yard pass in this two-minute drill.

...I thought Demetric Evans looked bigger and sure enough he is, by about 10 pounds. Seems he followed Phillip Daniels' power-lifting routine and is clearly stronger. He's flashed as much as any lineman this camp.

...Shawn Springs picked off Derek Devine. Guessing that won't go in his trophy case.

...The more I see of Colt Brennan, the more I think he's several years away from contributing, if at all. His delivery needs fixing; he needs to bulk up; and he needs to make quicker decisions. Other than that ...

...But the rookie class has some promise. End Rob Jackson does something every so often to make you go, ''hmmmm.'' Today, he dropped into coverage and deflected a pass. At this stage, he's merely intriguing. But that's a little more than I anticipated.

...Rookie corner Justin Tryon, another guy with good potential, went stride for stride with Devin Thomas and broke up a deep pass. He later had good coverage on Billy McMullen, showing the ability to turn and run.

... London Fletcher's wife delivered their second child Tuesday morning; Cortland Steele Fletcher. How nice that a linebacker gives his son the name Steel(e). Fitting.

...Corner Matteral Richardson had nice coverage on Malcolm Kelly on a deep route. He ran with him, turned at the last moment and deflected the pass from Devine.

...At the end of practice, both sides of the ball picked a representative from among the linemen to field a punt. If they caught it, their sides of the ball would get an extra hour of curfew. Justin Geisinger went first and easily caught a high punt from Derrick Frost. Next came Ryan Boschetti, who actually moved to his left to catch a wobbly Durant Brooks punt. Boschetti then punted the ball away to cheers from his defensive mates.
