Preseason Pregame 4

We're in desperate need of a fresh thread -- we've milked that welcome-home luncheon for all it's worth -- and it's time to get the old gameface on.
LaCa is winging his way to Jax on Jasno One so let's discuss our expectations for tonight, shall we?
Gotta think JC's knee is fine, but that he might be a bit rusty and, perhaps, skittish. The kid seems fearless and heaven knows he is indestructible, but until Kendall is up to speed, you'd think he'd have to worry a bit about his blind side. Do you think Portis really will play?
I don't worry much about the defense. I think it's back...or will be at 1 p.m. Sept. 9...Meantime, give Jasno's story today a read.
He'll give us a pregame post and we'll be off and running, blogging our guts out because we're supersmart. See you then!

However, I am royally p!ssed at Allen for wasting my $$ on relics that were unable to play!

Since there was so much about Cooley yesterday on the blog, i wanted to hear everyone else's thoughts on whether he would be so loved if he was not a white guy! I mean i think he is a very good tight end, a very below average blocker and a very nice guy but for people to be so upset a year before his contract is even up and to push for us to sign him so bad, isn't that a little too much? I'm a white guy too but I would be just as happy if he leaves and we signed a younger Tony Gonzales, even if he was hispanic!

Posted by: bethesdaboy | August 30, 2007 10:14 AM | Report abuse

Portis is fine. Though I wish he wouldn't play at all this game, as it's completely meaningless.

Also, I wish one publication (espn, cnnsi, cbsportsline) had the guts to pick anyone other than the Eagles to finish in the top of the division. What is that ranking based on? The fact that their defense is old and their linebacking core suspect? The fact they lost their best receiver and their two best players (Westbrook, McNabb, not to mention Kearse) are highly injury prone. It's ridiculous.

Posted by: Vincent in Brooklyn | August 30, 2007 10:14 AM | Report abuse

"The tackle opposite Griffin -- the best lineman on the team -- generally faces the opponent's weakest guard and after the snap the center will usually turn immediately to help the guard who is engaged with Griffin. That other tackle needs to exploit the resulting gap and help collapse the pocket inside -- Daniels fits that mold -- because in 2006 there were too many times when end Andre Carter forced the passer to step back toward the line, but no one made him pay with a big hit and the pass was completed to a secondary receiver."

So maybe Andre wasnt so bad on passing downs. Could have caused a lot of sacks.

No on running downs I am going to say that was Holdmans fault and with Rocky in there, #99 is poised for a big year.

And Sween, true about the field in Zona, but they were doing that for the Seoul/ Japan World Cup... so that aint new.

But in Big D, the field lenth jumbotron and the arches extening through the entire strucutre... much more like an airport...

Its okay to be jealous isnt it?

C-Squared gets much love because of his attitude and play. Man never goes down on the first hit and catches the ball when thrown to him. I dare say he's been our only consistent reciever posting a dominant 10.8 ypc when spread as a reciever last year and catching 25 of 31 balls thrown his way.

Vince I feel ya. What I can't get over is the out and out sweating of the Cowboys. I dont' get what there is to be excited about with this team.

Perhaps Romo gets better but other than that, they have a banged up secondary, flat footed Roy Willabingus, and no more Parcells.

Picking the Girls so high blows my mind.

Wow, discussion on previous thread was all about me/Brits and I missed it all!

I am not in the least offended by the epithet 'Pom' or 'Pommie', even when accompanied by the traditional Aussie modifier of 'b*st*rd', I genuinely do take it as a term of affection even though it's not always meant that way.

I have no better ideas of the words' origin than those suggested on Waikikipedia.

That list of British nicknames was interesting, it's the first time I've seen it. I picked Redcoat as my nom de blog because it clearly identifies what I am and permits some jovial back and forth of the "my ancestors shot at yours" variety.

Glad to oblige, TE. I can't believe someone objected, a month or so, to being called a hamster! It's a good thing!
As for the NFC East, I do think the Eagles will be solid again. I get every single one of the things you guys point out about the Iggles, but I think there's enough there to be tough again. And Reid is always solid, if not stellar. I think the Cowboys are overrated; I'm no fan of Wade Phillips as a head coach. And until about 10 days ago, I had thought the Gints were gonna stink up Jersey. Now, though, I don't think they'll be that bad. So I do see the Iggles winning the division, for the last time, with the other three teams battling it out and the second-place team getting the wild card. I think there's a very good chance that team will be the Redskins.

I pretty much agree with Cyn City's assesment. (say that 10 times fast).

The Eagles have questions, to be sure, but I just think they have less questions than the rest of the teams.

If our D is as advertised and we win our home games (with 320 making noise in the Yellow Circle) then we have a shot at sneakin into the playoffs.

Every single team in the League has glaring weaknesses. Look at the Colts. They were the popular (and ultimately correct) choice ti win it all last year. They had this high octane offense with BBM and Marvin and on and on. Yet they also had this liability with run defense. I'm still shocked the Bears couldn't exploit it, but the Bears' big liability was under center and it proved to be the case in the Super Bowl.

The 'Skins have a stellar defense (or the makings of one, all of which shall be proven true or otherwise in 2 weeks). But their offense seems to be a liability. Granted, CP hasn't been on the field. That little guy changes everything, so I'm cautiously optimistic.

(and for all the CP haters: do you think the team would have made the playoffs in 2005 without him???)

I hate to be a broken record, but the formula is simple. Defense keeps them in games and helps them get to 6-5. At that time, JC and the rest of the Muppets gel and make a run.

Im sure their talent evaluators should know how to draft young offensive weapons, but definetely not you!!! You are making Chris Cooley to be the best offensive weapon in the NFL or something. CP put the entire team on his shoulders in 2005 and ran them into the playoffs. He gets hurt for the first time in his career (in, I should point out, a completely meaningless game), has a down year, and the fan base gets down on him. Come on now, people. He is no LT, but he's a darn good running back and certainly among the top 12.

Living in Atlanta, I won't be able to see the game tonight. ( sigh) Oh well, at least I can find out from you good people how we looked.

Both Soups and Portis will probably get a series and then watch from the sidelines the rest of the night.

I do think we will see more of the same "vanilla" offense and defense tonight. Nothing outlandish, just straight up man football. Gibbs, Williams and Saunders are still looking at depth and that's what we or rather you local viewers will see tonight. One interesting tidbit will be the play of Kendall. IMHO, he will be fine, but the offense might not be firing on all cylinders till week 2 or 3.

But I aint' to worried. The defense should keep us in the game.

Gosh I never said Cooley was not good... he is a very good tight end... but people here saying they are going to send their tickets back to snyder if he is not re-signed... jesus!!!.... He is not a freeking hall of famer just an above average tight end that is goofy as hell... As far as portis, how many people would not trade him right back for Champ Bailey today and actually throw in a 2nd round pick in there or more??? Portis is good but not that deg on good for him to think he is too good to play in pre-season...I root for burgundy and gold, not for individual players that think they are above everyone else...

Cooley is a young Tony Gonzalez. He will be a pro bowl player for years to come.

The trash talk about Portis yesterday stuns me ... wow, that's all I can saw is wow.

On a related note, I saw a great quote in the Express this AM that I hadn't seen yet: "I think Ladell's got the best schedule in football," Portis joked Tuesday. "When I'm not going, they make sure nothing happens to him as a safety valve. And when I'm going, don't nothing happen to him, because I'm [playing]."

Not signing Cooley would be emblematic of a franchise making consistently stupid decisions because they don't have a halfway decent front office. That's why I'd send back my season tickets and focus on teams that I don't have to fly cross country to see. I honestly couldn't care less about any player (or at least, haven't since Darrell Green retired).

But I do love Cooley. I think his personality is great for the League. And nothing about him has ever intimated that he thought he was above the rest of the team. CP, admittedly, is a different story...

Posted by: P Diddy | August 30, 2007 11:14 AM | Report abuse

I think saying they give their tickets back is a built up thing. It would be watching another-drafted-Skin-made-good be not shown the money while bringing in free agents.

It's not solely based on Cooley, just the many Cooley's of the past.

P-Diddy - Yikes. I guess some people just don't get it until the unfortunate meeting of brick with forehead. Probably some odd twist on the "He's still talking to me, so I couldn't have hurt him that badly - I'm still a good person!" genre. Whatever - she's garbage, best left on the curb to be taken away by someone else. Good choice on bad mojo.

Club 320 - Please, make some noise in those seats! We could use more fans like you in the posh seats. I now look foward to seeing you, your brother and your dad on the random shots of the crowd and inexplicably yelling out "Heavy Jumbo!", much to the puzzled look of friends.

Oh, and last thing. I have made "DJ Jazzy" Jeff Townes' song 'Practice' from his latest album "Return Of The Magnificent" my theme song of the Redskins Insider 2007 preseason, for the fact that he uses AI's "It's Just Practice" interview as the sample hook. (The rest of the album's pretty decent, to boot, but that's just me.)

A younger Tony Gonzalez? Nah, not a chance. He's a young Chris Cooley. Y

Someone who plays hard, gives you all he's got, and still works to endear himself to the fans.

I certainly dont' care if he's white, and imagine 99 percent of the people could care less.

The tight end position has become more important in the NFL, and you certainly don't give up a bird in the hand.

This Chris Cooley is white discussion is awkward like a 7th grade dance that is supervised by parents. The dude balls. Some white dudes sweat him more than they should because of the whiteness; most love him because we love productive redskins with personality. Fin. Spank you very much.

Diddy...I know man. There is a sinister pathology at work there. You are her safety blanket. The fear of losing 'it' is so great that you are being bombarded with these 'interweb messagings'. I ask that you take the lead for the rest of the dudes out there and ignore this nonsense. As my mother used to say to me: 'you have made your bed. Now you have to sleep in it'. And so too should this psycho hosebeast. (Wayne's World people. Respect) She made the call. Fine. Bye. Be careful that door doesn't hit your buttocks on the way out. Dating isn't easy. Otherwise they wouldn't call it dating. It would be called 'facilitated constant hookups'.

As for the skins, I'm terrified that CP is now entering that 'Fred Taylor injury watch ' zone. I don't know if its just playing possum like the Chargers do with LDT, or if CP is really hurt. I'd just feel better if we had more than 1 practice under our belts.

My last point is this, let us not make the mistake of looking back at certain things with rose colored glasses as they grow further into the past. Andre Carter was dreadful last year. Never forget that people. The dude got mushed around on running plays and passing plays. All this 'coming around the corner' talk is poppycock. The dude had like 3 hurries the whole year. He was boots. Garbage. Maybe the Qbs were stepping up and blah blah blah. Bottom line, NFL defensive ends, at some point, hit the quarterback. Andre Carter did this with ALARMING infrequency. Do not hand me doo doo and call me 8 months later telling me its fertilizer. We will continue to not pressure the QB this year as we have made 0 improvements on the defensive line.

Sorry for my absence. Life in NYC has been intense. Holler

"F crazy chicks."

Posted by: 4-12 | August 30, 2007 11:23 AM

How'd you think he got in this problem in the first place?

Taking my jibba-jabba admonition to heart, I gotta repeat my biggest "look for" about tonight ... that Brunell does NOT have a mind-blowingly great game like that travesty with the consecutive pass record last year. This QB controversy over #2 (can I say that here without an "SJK"] has gone on quite long enough. Time to end the tedium and get it over with.

Also, Zebra, great glog, primarily b/c it was unregurgiated stuff around here. Hence, something new to talk about. That said, results may vary. Where I've sat (section 109), the peeps around me have gotten pretty good at (1) watching the language, (2) standing up and yelling when the team needs it, (3) going batshti crazy when the team complies, and (4) sitting down again, as appropriate. Might be because the entire section seems like season ticket holders who know each other though. Also, though obviously from the team originally, the best way to get GOOD season tickets if from "some guy" rather than the team or StubHub (admittedly a hard proposition, but gold when you find it).

Finally, my experience is that the reviews that they don't play on the JumboTron are typically going to end up as penalties on the Skins.

Dee Brown re-signed, Derrick Blaylock to IR

WarpathInsiders.com Aug 30, 2007

The Skins have re-signed RB Dee Brown and placed Derrick Blaylock on Injured Reserve.

The Washington Redskins announced today that they have re-signed running back Dee Brown. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Brown, 5-10, 210 lbs., re-joins the Redskins after originally signing on August 7, 2007 and was released August 24, 2007. He played for the Kansas City Chiefs the past two seasons. For his career, Brown has played in 44 games, starting three. He has 119 rushes for 405 yards, 21 receptions for 114 yards, and 27 kickoff returns for 496 yards. He previously spent time on the active roster of three other clubs: Carolina (2001-02), Pittsburgh (2003), and Cleveland (2004).

During the 2006 season, he played in 15 games primarily on special teams and recorded 10 carries for 24 yards (2.4 avg) and one reception for five yards. He was second on the team with 21 special teams tackles and one fumble recovery. He also has playoff experience, appearing in the AFC Wild Card Game at Indianapolis (1/6/07).

Brown was selected by Carolina in the sixth round (175th overall) of the 2001 NFL draft. Brown finished his collegiate career at Syracuse second in school history with 28 rushing touchdowns and fifth with 2,626 rushing yards.

The Redskins also announced today that they have placed running back Derrick Blaylock on injured reserve.

Why does that whole Portis/Bailey thing keep coming up. Bailey wanted out. There was no way we were going to keep him here without some sort of holdout. I think Gibbs did the best he could at the time when he traded for Portis. He wasn't up to speed on free agency yet and we didn't have a lot of leverage since Bailey was so unhappy. We should have gotten a few draft picks in the trade, but it's over and done with. We should move on.

Posted by: P Diddy | August 30, 2007 12:11 PM | Report abuse

Yes - trade talent that can yield a better return so you get something BACK instead of letting it fester and ending up with nothing.

Unless you can't & then you don't.

JJ made his career on that. He did ok.

I love Cooley - Cooley's great. I have no problems w/ keeping him. But if you can get something instead of loosing him for NOTHING - it's better to do that.

So picks we need & don't have for a TE/fullback we won't have anyway... yeah - I'll take that.

sween, taking the wayback machine to 11:38 in the AM...

I'm more and more convinced that it doesn't matter one whit whether Brunell or Collins is #2. It just doesn't matter. Because if Campbell goes down (God forbid) neither one of those dudes is going to carry us to the promised land. They are both caretakers, game managers, mistake-minimizers... they might be able to run this offense, but Campbell is the only guy we have right now with all the ingredients to be a great QB.

So I'm with you, I want the debate over our #2 QB to end, because it's plenty boring, but I no longer care whether it's Brunell or Collins. Same difference.

WrongDog, the good news is that if you drink too much, help is only a panic button away. I panicked last night and almost did something I shouldn't have done. Thank God they were out of tequila at the bar and I couldn't even get started, much less go too far.

1/2 cup lime juice (preferably key limes)
1/2 cup water
part of an envelope of Knox unflavored gelatin
Some lime zest
1 can sweetened condensed milk
Graham cracker crust (make it yourself ain't hard if you got a foodprocesser)

Squeeze the limes until you get 1/2 cup of juice. Meanwhile sprinkle part of the envelope of gelatin over the water in a small sauce pan and let soften for about 5 minutes. Then stir over low heat until dissolved. Combine the gelatin, lime juice, zest and condensed milk in large bowl. Then pour into the graham cracker crust. Chill for two hours. Top with whipped cream when serving to contrast the tartness.

On the other hand, Shapiro's article was just stupid. Saying Salave'a didn't "deserve" to be cut is moronic. He will play in the NFL this year and he will make a lot of money and have an opportunity to make more in the future.

Now, if he informed the Skins that he planned on retiring if he was cut then maybe, MAYBE, I'd consider adding him to the PUP. However, there's no indication of that whatsoever so Shapiro looks like a moron to me.

The Thai folks love the flashy, gaudy, BRIGHT motifs, decor and signs that go along with some of our popular chains. So .. listen closely now, they BUY the franchise but server their own food!!? How was this possible? I don't really know. All I know is the Thai ground control flight ops team took us there for Thai food. I can't seem to recall any deer hunters slamming deer on the ground by swinging them by their legs until they died from massive internal injuries.... or electrocuting them in water...slowly.... or my fav, anyone even heard of hanging a deer?

Vick is a punk & should get years not months. If you need further proof of his cheesiness, just ask the girl he gave herpes to while down in Mexico..... I bet he & the posse got a huge laugh there too. I hope he tagged more than a few sistas in the last year too, maybe then some outrage would occur.

Does anybody remember exactly where we stand with the Cooley contract negotiations?

I think it's a GOOD sign that we've already started talking about an extension/new deal/whatever and not waited for the upcoming offseason. And I don't find it surprising that it's not done yet.

And while a deal isn't done yet, I haven't seen any of those troubling smoke signals like "Cooley insulted by Skins offer" or "Skins and Cooley far apart on terms of new deal."

So I remain optimistic. Insufferably optimistic.

Why hate on Snider?!?

I fully expect all the Snider bashers to hate on me, I welcome it but this is MHO...

I mean, no question some of his moves can be questioned. But his love for the Skins and his desire to field a winner can not be questioned...From the players up to the coaches, they say anything they ask for/need they get.

Every off season, the moves we make...get us all excited, so I would think we all get excited for the season. Dan doesn't run routes, or tackle people...so you can't blame him for the on the field performance...He is the one that signs off on the checks for moves that we get so hyped for every new season. Sometimes when the moves don't work out, we blame him for the signing.

I'm just saying, I think the Snider bashing is getting old, lets just realize he is a owner that is going to help shape the future of the league. I just appreciate the fact we have a passionate owner and is willing to spend the money to make it happen...

Just what I think...

I'm just saying..., you're right, Snyder is our favorite whipping boy up here, but he's not without his good qualities, however hard he makes it to see and appreciate them.

It could be worse, we could have a cheapskate owner (Bidwell), a lunatic owner (Davis), or an overweight owner who smells of beer and cheese (the city of Green Bay).

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | August 30, 2007 1:39 PM | Report abuse

We hate on Snyder because he's a money-hungry jerk (both in and outside of football) and he happens to be a stubborn owner. We're all hopeful that he gets it one day, but to date he's still a jerk.

I for one find it meaningless to talk too much about it 1) because everyone knows and 2) because I'm talking with my wallet. No more jerseys for me. Want an example of his jerkness?

Want more...?

There was an article on this site (which was actually an excerpt from Mark Maske's book) about what Snyder did on opening weekend last year. He had six flags closed so that he, the Tom Cruise's and the Shapiro guy mentioned in the article could have the place to himself, then went to Fed Ex and had them put the Giants/Colts game on the jumbotron so they could sit on the field and watch it. Then he had cruise and Jamie Foxx in the owners box (along with Cerrato) for the game on monday, that of course we lost pathetically to the Vikings. There is no reality with this guy, just Dannyworld. If there is such a thing as karma, he is headed for a severe bear-eating or something...

Posted by: Glass Half Full? | August 30, 2007 1:44 PM | Report abuse

glass half,

I agree. Snyder gets a bad rap from me, and others, because he cares about money more than his loyal fans. Depending on who you talk to, he can also be pinned with caring about money more than the team as well (case in point, the big splash signings to sell more jersey's, etc).

Hey, I like this guy.

Leftwich went on to be a first-round draft pick of the Jaguars, and he has put his childhood rooting interests behind him. But he has plenty of ties to the Washington, D.C., area--he attended H.D. Woodson High School in the city.

Who was his favorite player growing up?

"Whoever played good that week," he said in a 2006 interview. "Sometimes it was Mark Rypien. Sometimes it was Darrell Green. Sometimes it was Earnest Byner. Sometimes it was Doug Williams. It was everybody, man."

I like Leftwich too. I personally think that his stay as a starting QB in the NFL will be short-lived, but he seems like a class guy who also grew up a Skins fan.

Funny Leftwich tid bit. Who remembers when Jax visited Danny-land last year and the cameras kept flashing to his family in the crowd? They were sitting like 3 rows from the top of the stadium. How funny is that? Danny can't spring for better seats for a hometown's kids homecoming game????

Hopefully, it was a good time. Is "On Deck" a go for next week's kick-off; but more importantly, will we be able to pull tonight's game off DirecTV? Maybe a FSN feed from back east, hopefully.

Finally, I am beginning to sense a growing schism between the east and west bloggers on this board. Hopefully this can blow up into a feud ala late-90s gansta rap. But have no doubt that you will know where my allegiances lie: where the sun sets.

The messed up thing is how they went into a tailspin the same day they signed Trembley and I pronounced myself the biggest Orioles optimist ever. I swear this franchise is cursed. Next year is a critical year for this team, because if they continue to lose, BRob and Bedard will walk, no one will want to come, and we will have absolutely turned into the Royals and DRays, if we're not already there.

Clearly the pre-season energy and testosterone build-up is driving some crazy blogging.

Two things:
1) Jason, fantastic article today. There was articulate and insightful criticism and analysis of last year's terrible D and intelligently-justified optimism for the upcoming year. In short, there was lots of info and insight there that we couldn't get easily elsewhere.

2) Just saw CP's interview on skins.com and finally it's made clear that he wanted LDT treatment all along and his knee is fine. Why did we need to wait until now to learn this??? A fleet of inside reporters and yet the absolutely critical issue of our star RB's condition gets a bland comment here and there and nothing more? If not for us diehards, report something for the tens of millions of fantasy dudes and soothe their Portis vs. Betts nightmares. I do worry sometimes that Snyder's empire is just a reflection of the current white house - you report what we want you to report and it will be the idiotic trivial stuff and fluff stories.

The Skins go on a massive spending spree last year and the results, well, you know... the highest paid punter protector ever is now gone, Lloyd had the worst statistical year by a WR ever, Fauria is gone, ARE played well, but didn't come close to living up to his 11 mill bonus, AC played very poorly the first 10 games, etc.

The O's... well they spent 42 million on a bullpen that has now allowed more 8th inning runs than any other team in the league, blown about 25 games in which the O's were leading after the 7th, has an ERA close to 6.00, and gave up 24 runs in 4 innings to Texas, 11 in 1 inning to Tampa, etc.

Posted by: Stumped | August 30, 2007 02:29 PM

I'm fully within my rights as a Skins fan to fret, esp. based on past history (e.g., Springs' sore groin from late 2005, ignored till they figured out it was a sports hernia ... which resulted in a RE-injury after bringing him back too soon). Sheesh, its not like I'm fleeing from virtual jm220 ...

For the record, Jasno has been decidely telegraphing the "CP is sandbagging" line since about a week after the "re-injury" in TC. CynCyty can right out and said it (though I'm not sure she used the term sandbag).

Now lemme get back to fretting. My fingernails need a trim. If he IS sandbagging, all is forgiven with me ... good work CP and St. Joe (who would have to be in on it). Portis takes care of himself and delivers when necessary. Last year, he delivered when unnecessary, which meant necessary deliveries did not arrive.

Also, too bad about Blaylock. Why do we find out about an IR-worthy injury today? I thought the good news from the Ravens game was that no one got hurt.

The one thing that doesn't sound right in the whole CP injured/not injured farrago is why not just say the truth? They could just say "CP doesn't want to play pre-season, and we don't want to risk him", and it's the end of the story.

Who cares apart from the other guys on the team who may be p*ssed that CP gets a free pass?

Miami have held Taylor, Thomas and Traylor out for the whole pre-season so far, as last year, and EVERYone - fans included - thinks that is just fine. They've earned it.

If Gibbs is playing mind-games, he's only playing it with himself and the fans. I know he's old, but he's not stupid ergo, there is more to CP's injury than just a smokescreen and he won't be properly ready for week 1.

It's hard to speculate on what the team thinks of CP sitting out since none of us (presumably) are on the team.

That said, given that the season tanked last season for a multitude of reasons, injuries being chief among them, and injuries to CP probably being the chiefest of those, I'm betting that the team is quite fine taking it easy and emerging relatively unscathed from this abhomination the NFL calls pre-season.

Knock on wood...

Hi 4-12, there actually are. Ford produced some homologated ones via Karmann in Germany so that they could enter them into rally competition. Here's a link:

http://uk.cars.yahoo.com/car-reviews/car-and-driving/ford-escort-rs-cosworth-2003497.html

They are basically rocket-powered rollerskates, dangerous but really fun to drive.

Of course none of the interesting Escort variants ever made it across the Atlantic, so you're probably thinking of the Escort as being one up from a Yugo.

They do keep doing minor edits on the depth chart so ... it isn't going to exactly reflect the cuts but the following guys appear to be on the chopping block for Saturday. Worth watching to see who performs and who doesn't?

There are 47 "starters" and "backups" listed on the roster.
That leaves slots for only 6 additional guys out of the following
list. Of course they can use some players to backup 2 positions to keep a guy they like ...

Quarterback
Todd Collins
Jordon Palmer

Just a feeling I get from Grilliams Lisa. He really likes Sinclair a lot. Bottom line they measure them as much on their value to special teams. But I note that this year that has lesser importance due to injuries and age I suppose. As Williams just said when he cut Big Joe and Lemar, the younger guys are doing much, much better than last year. And Lemar WAS a special teams standout too!

I'd transition at DE this year too (pickem), so we can make a serious run next season.

If Gibbs is playing mind-games, he's only playing it with himself and the fans. I know he's old, but he's not stupid ergo, there is more to CP's injury than just a smokescreen and he won't be properly ready for week 1.

Discuss.

Posted by: Redcoat | August 30, 2007 03:00 PM

Agreed, which is why I am perplexed why my fellow bloggers thinks that he will have a big year.

If he is not injured, my take on it is that he should have been taking a couple of snaps at least. There should be no LT treatment for someone who did not have a great season a year ago. If people remember, he did not get injured by running the ball last year. He got injured because he made a spectacular, but equally stupid tackle near the sidelines where he could have just as easily pushed the opponent out of bounds.

Maybe its about the sandbag virus. LT gets the LT treatment b/c he is LT and everyone knows he is LT. I don't know about those other guys you mentioned, but Saban was a hard a...nose and Cameron arrives from San Diego, where there can be only one highlander.

Maybe Gibbs was thinking that everyone would want to get the sandbag virus so it needed to be quarantined to Portis (and, later on, to Portis' giggle pal, Samuels). I dunno, I also just want it to be so -- that he's not really hurt that bad.

Report on last night's final ODA before The Season officially begins:
1. Willie arrived first, resplendent in his black tshirt emblazoned with the likeness of the last Super Bowl ring won by our beloved guys in burgundy and gold.
2. Nate was next through the door, lookin' fine as ever in his 44 Diesel jersey and sportin' some new facial hair that is coming in nicely.
3. Stumped, while last to arrive, was the most cogent and relevant in his commentary, and also kind enough to feign attentiveness as Willie blathered endlessly about subjects on which he is typically ill informed.
Final ale count: Willie 4, Nate 3, Stumped 3.
Missing in action, but mentioned in conversation was Chris in Stumptown who it is hoped will join us at the On Deck in the Pearl District for the festivities on Opening Day. Skins 13, Dolphins 6.

Just sayin'...

I think you may be right 'sween, but again wouldn;t that imply that St Joe doesn't really have control of the team?

If Portis is dictating how/when he plays in pre-season and JJG is a willing accomplice, what's the point? Gibbs can just say "we're not dressing him" and leave it at that, no-one doubts who's in charge.

This way seems a little 'weak' to me, and I don't think that would be a good thing for your team.

Lisa,

And he does fine on special teams. But who did they pick to play Middle Linebacker last year? A converted safety? Why not Campbell? Why draft 2 linebackers and sign 3 or 4 more? In fact why draft Rocky if you have a Campbell?

They were 5-11 last year. Obviously the coaches felt they could do better than Khary Campbell as backup. WHY BEG TO RETURN, AND THEN SIGN someone who is 34 and wasn't even in camp? Randall Godfrey? If you have a Campbell? I note that he has already moved up rapidly on the depth chart.

I guess they are beginning to feel like he had his chance and now its time for some new blood. The handwriting is on the wall Lisa.

Bigger Chooch:

The dude who is always first and posts 'first'.

The dude on the blog that starts dramatics and then awkwardly sticks to his guns all day, gets ganged up on by several people and refuses to relax and refreshes the page every 2 minutes to see if a new person told him to pipe down so that he can start the process anew of getting red faced angry/posting/refreshing.

You decide.

Football starts for real tonight. College games count this evening. It's on.

Didn't like the article by Shapiro...Keeping Saleve'a is foolish...yeah..he had some great games, but c'mon...do the Patriots keep players around for sentimental reasons.
