Alexander, Moore, Randle El and Mix Injuries Not Serious

In the early going, Lorenzo Alexander rolled his left ankle, but went back in the game. Kareem Moore suffered a shoulder stinger, but also went back into the game. Antwaan Randle El went off for X-rays of his forearm; those were negative. He was back on the sidelines with his right wrist bandaged because of a bruise. Anthony Mix went to the locker room for X-rays of his ribs. Those results also were negative.
...
In a pregame radio interview, Vinny Cerrato, Washington's executive vice president of football operations, said that rookie safety Chris Horton has a colon infection.

The team previously said that Horton, who missed practice late last week, had stomach flu. Horton is expected to return to practice this week. Other Cerrato tidbits: Rookie wide receiver Devin Thomas (hamstring) might play against the Jets. Cornerback Carlos Rogers, returning from major knee surgery, is tentatively scheduled to appear against the Carolina Panthers on Aug. 23. Defensive end Erasmus James (reconstructive knee surgery) is expected to participate in position drills this week. James has been working individually since the Minnesota Vikings traded him to Washington for a conditional seventh-round pick.
...
Defensive tackle Kedric Golston, who is competing with Anthony Montgomery for a first-team spot next to tackle Cornelius Griffin, was scheduled to start tonight against Buffalo. Montgomery returned to practice last week after having surgery to repair a bone he broke in his hand during Washington's intra-squad scrimmage.

With safety LaRon Landry (hamstring) sitting out again, Shawn Springs will start at free safety and Leigh Torrence will join Fred Smoot at cornerback.

With Landry sidelined for most of training camp, Springs occasionally has worked at safety. Springs has said he is open to the idea of moving to that position in the next few seasons in an attempt to extend his career. Springs and cornerbacks coach Jerry Gray have had many conversations about making the eventual switch. ... Safety Vernon Fox is not with the team because of personal reasons, a Redskins spokesman said.

My wishes for this game

1. No injuries
2. Solid performance with good decision making by Soups
3. Defense steps it up from last week
4. No injuries
5. No injuries

Personally I hope that JC and JZ are not tied together in that if JC does not get the job down, I hope that this FO does not get rid of Zorn. The two places we have had too much turnover is the HC and QB positions.

The good teams are good because of the consistency they have at HC. Zorn needs to be given every opportunity to succeed/fail before the FO jumps the gun and fires him.

Though I would love to see JZ and JC lead the Skins to many victories!

Sfskin
don't forget no injurues.

I know the switch that will cause Springs to stay longer will make Lisa happy.

Posted by: jm220 | August 9, 2008 6:46 PM | Report abuse

Looks like we are thin at safety tonight with both Horton and Fox out. Let's see what Torrance can do with a start tonight. Go Defense!

Posted by: Curzon417 | August 9, 2008 6:47 PM | Report abuse

No injuries! JC another strong performance.

Posted by: jm220 | August 9, 2008 6:48 PM | Report abuse

Alex - right thanks! No injuries! : )

Posted by: sfskin | August 9, 2008 6:50 PM | Report abuse

Colon infection? Maybe vague injury reports are a good thing.

SKIPPY ON VEGANMORTONSENISM

Skippy used to be a car-i-vore, specializing mostly on Buicks and a nice tasty Nash Rambler.

That's a Skippy joke. He didnt' eat cars, he ate carneys.

But all that cramped to a squeeky halter when Skippy saw the movie about hee little adorational talking piggie, "Babe" which made him cry the most since he saw Dumbo shoot Bambi's Mom right in the Nutcracker. Sweet!

So, after leaving the movie Skippy went for a final Barbeque rib dinner with fries and slaw and beers and Lemon Meringue Pie for desserp. But then he made a solemn oaf.

Because of "Babe, the talking Pig which was cute and rounded up those sheeos and din't evn have his way with them unlike some people on this broad.

Skippy's oaf is although once a carnivalbore, for the rest of his life or as long as he lives, whichever comes first, Skippy will never ever ever ever ever eat a Talking Pig.

Fondly,

Skippy

jm - I was wondering the same thing and gawd help me I went and looked it up. Apparently not that uncommon and antibiotics will facilitate such things happening. . . something about bacteria growing large and . . .well I stopped reading after that.

With Rock out, Mason may have his chance against some better defenders and can show he belongs here.

Posted by: Curzon417 | August 9, 2008 7:04 PM | Report abuse

Remember how the blog M.D.s questioned why he'd be on antibiotics for what they initially said was the flu last week? That explains it.

Posted by: Cindy | August 9, 2008 7:04 PM | Report abuse

LMAO! Smack you might be right about that one. Sfskin I was hoping someone else would look it up and let us know. lol

Mr. Cartwright to the white courtesy phone.

Posted by: SMACK | August 9, 2008 7:09 PM | Report abuse

Wow really Joe Theisman?!?! A key to the game is you have to catch the ball? No way! Wow hope they've been practicing that.

Posted by: sfskin | August 9, 2008 7:09 PM | Report abuse

Oof, Mason fumbles right to the kicker.

Posted by: Cindy | August 9, 2008 7:10 PM | Report abuse

Good hold by D. Need to bring in the 2nd string on D. No need to get the starters hurt. JC take it to the house on this drive

Posted by: jm220 | August 9, 2008 7:33 PM | Report abuse

That was great D. Hope we see more of that, but we may see some serious substituting on D.

Posted by: frediefritz | August 9, 2008 7:33 PM | Report abuse

Umm Cooley doesn't have an American flag on the back of his helmet. . .that means he is a secret Muslim right?

WOOO ARE! And Soooouuuppss! Okay CP off the field ahora por favor.

CP, best blocking RB in the NFL.

Posted by: Curzon417 | August 9, 2008 7:42 PM | Report abuse

Seriously to echo what several have said in last few days - is there a better blocking back than CP? I think not.

What's wrong with being a Muslim

Posted by: jm220 | August 9, 2008 7:43 PM | Report abuse

Did you see Samuels throw off the tackle, then blow out a linebacker!

Posted by: frediefritz | August 9, 2008 7:43 PM | Report abuse

Even with that holding penalty on JJ, Skins have showed some discipline.

Posted by: Curzon417 | August 9, 2008 7:43 PM | Report abuse

Or not...

Posted by: Mattsoundworld | August 9, 2008 7:43 PM | Report abuse

Go Betts!!

Posted by: c | August 9, 2008 7:44 PM | Report abuse

Nice!

Posted by: Curzon417 | August 9, 2008 7:45 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: jm220 | August 9, 2008 7:46 PM | Report abuse

Look at this offense move the ball! Good play calling by JayZ, Z-man, JZ...

Posted by: Curzon417 | August 9, 2008 7:47 PM | Report abuse

jm - absolutely nothing on the contrary. I'm just being snarky because of all the stupid things people have said because Obama wasn't wearing a flag pin. You know the silly season of American politics . . .sorry I'll focus on football.

Soups just seems poised and calm - always did but feels even more so.

Posted by: sfskin | August 9, 2008 7:47 PM | Report abuse

We start at the 45, gain 69 yards, and are still 4 yards short of the goal line... Thats not very good.

Posted by: Mattsoundworld | August 9, 2008 7:47 PM | Report abuse

No problem my friend. It seems JC is doing well. How does he look?

Posted by: jm220 | August 9, 2008 7:48 PM | Report abuse

They have to go for it. This could be the whole season right here.

Posted by: Cindy | August 9, 2008 7:48 PM | Report abuse

Okay not that I wear a tin foil hat (at least not everyday) or think there was someone on the grassy knoll but the fog that has been in place for 8 days in my part of SF is breaking up and the sun is out. . . .just as Skins play and play real purttee. . .I'm not saying . . . I'm just sayin

Posted by: Mattsoundworld | August 9, 2008 8:06 PM | Report abuse

Huh?

McMillen nice job although Betts rolled up his legs on that last run which must have stung a bit.

Posted by: sfskin | August 9, 2008 8:06 PM | Report abuse

I don't remember Ladell Betts looking this QUICK in prior years.

Posted by: frediefritz | August 9, 2008 8:06 PM | Report abuse

Now that the tequila is taking hold, Theisman is easier to take!

Posted by: Curzon417 | August 9, 2008 8:06 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: Cndy | August 9, 2008 8:06 PM | Report abuse

If only Superman were there, he'd be able to tell us right away if ARE was seriously hurt. You don't need your forearms to catch, right? Maybe we should consult Theisman. He's obviously been doing some research in that area.

This team should post a winning record and be battling for a wildcard spot.

Wow, crazy. I remember way back when I had Madden 03(?) and Skins had Hamdan, I played him as my starting QB after injuries tanked my starters. He ended up going way up in his overall rating, and beat out Ramsey the next year was my starter for a few seasons with a rating in the low 80's.

ronic as Ramsey still sucks and for what he was projected to be and by all rights Gil should be out of the league.

Posted by: Alex35332 | August 9, 2008 9:22 PM

Ramsey was, quite frankly, screwed by everyone. How many Spurrier coached QBs have done well in the NFL? (crickets)...

And then Gibbs benches him after 3 quarters. I mean, he might not have ultimately been a successful QB, since he did have his faults (immobility and a propensity to throw INTs), but nobody threw the kid a bone, thats for sure.

Ramsey had plenty of bones. He started here. He started in New York. And he's started in Denver. He couldn't get the job done in any of those places. He's not an NFL QB, and it's not Spurrier's fault.

Posted by: Alex35332 | August 9, 2008 9:33 PM

Very true. This subject came up when Zorn was interviewing, how so few veteran QBs stick around in coaching to hand down the knowledge that young QBs so desperately need. I mean, you throw an NFL playbook at a rookie run in NFL gamespeed and hes coached by guys who have never played a down at the position? Thats tough.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Well, I feel I should remind folks that even in Gibbs 1.0, Gibbs showed nothing on offense or defense!

Players were evaluated on who hit hard, blocked well, got the tough yard, played special teams but again Coach Joe showed nothing.

Remember myself that when we won SB XVII we were 0-4 in preseason.

Then when we won SB XXVI we were 1-3 in preseason.

If you take an honest look at Americas history, you cant really say a whole lot about China.

The USA treats an island off its coast as a red-headed step child, just like China.
The USA pretty much wiped out the Native Americans, kinda like what China is trying to do with their repopulation programs.
The USA propped up Saddam and Iran when it benefited us, just like China props up North Korea.

Let China take care of China, and let us worry about our own dictator in chief.

I'm just surprised because Frost always seems to punt his best when there's competition, winning his spot with a marginally better performance before becoming Sir Shank-a-lot again during the regular season.

This time, he's averaging 12 yards per punt below the competition (although he's placed 3 inside the 20, compared to Brooks placing 2 inside the 20).

That being said, it does look to me like Brooks has a much greater upside and is winning the competition on the field.

I like NFLN also. Just thought they cut away from end of game pretty quick.

Posted by: jg284481 | August 9, 2008 10:53 PM | Report abuse

NFLN has had back to back to back to back to back etc. preseason all day. I think they must have deal with local team networks basically saying game starts at so we'll make sure we're there at kickoff.

So ad breaks were way shorter during game for example.

Posted by: sfskin | August 9, 2008 10:59 PM | Report abuse

I am surprised that the NFL network broke away from the girls game to the jets game.

Colt "guarantted HOFer" Brennan just gave nice interview on post game show.

Holy Smog Batman! Yes Chia I apologize I'm flipping back and forth with Olympics.

Hey Cyn Cyty/Jasno would love a purely subjective impression if the energy in the lockeroom seems as charged/positive/different as it appears on the field.

I know I know I'm Kool Aid goggling.

B-Mitch saying defense not where offense is right now. I tend to agree. Much better performance this week but still need like one more ratchet up.

I'm going to chalk it up to the injury situation. They just haven't fully gelled yet and HammyGate doesn't help.

Listening to Doc on the radio and he said the Skins will have to find a place for Mason. He said the Skins should keep 4 RB because you don't want to cut your best special teams player (Rock).

Posted by: radio two | August 9, 2008 11:49 PM | Report abuse

Guys, guys, guys. According to some up here, Mason's play means nothing. The fact that he's been one of the best Redskins on the field and clearly the best of all the "fringe" guys is all moot. He hasn't had a carry yet in a regular season game, therefore he is terrible. In fact, we should probably just cut him now.

Where's my man greg to back me up on this.

Anon. Don't misrepresent people like that. What many were arguing was against trading Betts for Mason to take his spot. Others were saying based off Masons pre-season performance was good enough to supplant betts.

McMullen vs. Mix

Even before the draft, it appeared that Billy McMullen was training camp fodder for the Washington Redskins. In four NFL seasons, the former Virginia Cavalier has caught just 45 passes. He managed just 29 in three seasons in the pass-happy Eagles offense before catching 16 last year for the Minnesota Vikings.

The Redskins signed him to get a big receiver in the fold, but after they drafted the 6-4 Malcolm Kelly and the 6-2 Devin Thomas in the second round, McMullen's 6-4 frame didn't look so imposing. Even absent the draftees, it appeared that the Anthony Mix, a second-year player who appeared to be six feet, five inches of red zone potential, was head and shoulders over McMullen despite his height advantage of just one inch.

After three weeks of training camp and two preseason games, the picture is starting to change. Thomas, Kelly, and Mix have been sidelined with an assortment of ailments. McMullen has been available for every practice and for as many game snaps as they will let him take.

He has made the most of those chances.

Against the Colts he had just one catch, but it was a beauty. On a third and seven play from the Washington 29, Colt Brennan arched a pass on which McMullen made a nifty over-the-shoulder grab that was good for 34 yards.

On Saturday against the Bills, McMullen was the game's leading receiver with six catches for 55 yards. After a couple of grabs he showed some nice run-after-catch ability as he turned upfield with authority.

Mix, meanwhile, had one catch for seven yards last night after missing the Hall of Fame game with a hamstring injury. The injury but bit he again as he left the game after the second-half kickoff after teammate Nemo Broughton clipped him in the ribs while both were making the tackle. While X-rays were negative for any fractures, the missed time hurt Mix more than will the bruised rib cage.

Kelly and Thomas, despite their absence from practice and games, are in no danger of getting cut. Mix, however, has gone from being a fairly sure bet to make the final 53-man roster to being squarely on the bubble. It looks like it will come down to Mix vs. McMullen for the final receiver spot if the Redskins, as expected, keep six.

If all other factors are equal, the Redskins likely would stick with Mix, who is three years younger than McMullen. But the main, overriding aspect that will determine who grabs that last receiver roster spot is production, both in games and on the practice field.

So far, McMullen has been productive and Mix has not.

Still, McMullen would be well advised to keep renting in the DC area and not buy just yet. Assuming that the rib injury is just a minor setback, Mix still has a few weeks to make his case. He had better make the most of that opportunity.

Billy McMullen has made the most of his.

Um, no, I believe I read many comments saying (paraphrasing) "There's a reason Mason was on the practice squad," or "If he was talented, why haven't any other teams picked him up?"

Like I said, reiterating the thoughts of many up here, Mason is terrible because he's never had a regular season carry. The fact that he's dominated both preseason games this year and played very well in preseason last year means nothing. Until he's had a regular season carry, he's terrible. And I don't want a terrible player getting any regular season carries for my Redskins. He should probably just be cut today.

Sadly the switch deleted many past posts on this debate. So I cant find anything to back up my argument nor to support yours anon. But from what I remember most people were saying that Mason is unproven and that people like greg were making some guru-esq arguments that the team should get rid of a proven player for some still unproven player to take his spot.

The pregame wasn't the first time it was mentioned about his colon infection. Cerrato reported about Horton's colon infection on Thursday during Redskins Nation.

Posted by: MikeW | August 10, 2008 10:43 AM | Report abuse

Can we put Mix on the practice squad or has he been in the league or with us too long to do that? I can't see much interest in him from other teams if he continues to be hurt and unproductive in the preseason. Would be nice to have him around should someone go down though.

Wondering if anyone has any advice for a redskin fan from north of the boarder. I am going to seattle on nov. 23 for the game wondering if there are area's where we skins fans bolster up against the 12th man.

Posted by: barks24 | August 10, 2008 11:41 AM | Report abuse

I think that we picked Mix off of the Giants practice squad last year, so he should still be eligible for our practice squad this year.

That would be a risky move, but may be necessary if he continues to be injury prone.
