Punter Brooks Is Gone

From Jason Reid:

Durant Brooks cleared waivers, agreed to an injury settlement and is no longer with the Redskins, a team spokesman said.

Brooks was a sixth-round selection in last April's NFL draft, but was replaced last week by Ryan Plackemeier after struggling in the Redskins' first six games.

Does "injury settlement" means he can't play anywhere else this season? I'm seeing the punter carousel is still turning ... Saints just replaced punters this week ... how was Green Bay's punting yesterday against the Clots?

No, he can still play. But first he has to get on the short list -- the four punters who fly from city to city and punt against each other. Plackenmeir's seat on the plane is empty for now.

Dude, it's a sixth round pick, not a third round pick. And if we could get rid of Frost, that alone would have been worth a third round pick. The fact that it only cost a sixth was a bargain.

No one has said that for at least a week. What we say now is "We have 90% of the draft picks on the roster."

What Jasno has to stop saying is that silly mantra of his about "The draft class makes up 20% of the roster." First off, it never really did, and now it's down to a measly 17%.

Durant, Brooks, Durant (never could get his name right - a bad omen for him) is now a free agent and can sign with anyone. Too bad the Redskins gave up on him so soon. Many kickers/punters take a year or two to get acclimated to life in the NFL and the particular demands of the kicking jobs. My guess is that at some point in the future, the Eagles will sign Durant, Brooks and he will be their starting punter for the next 10-12 years, similar to the current Eagles' kicker who had an early incarnation as a Redskin.

tafka, maybe in one of the other remaining NFC East venues, but not Philly. I'm thinking Sav Rocca is the best punter in the NFC East (I'd say the conference, but I really have NOT been paying that much attention to punters ... frankly, I feel like I've been forced to pay way more attention than I would ever want to).

Thank you thank you. You're far too kind.

I felt like the Placke punted OK on Sunday (1 is more than 0 after all) but here is what the Cleveland newspaper, the 'Plain Dealer' had to say:

Special teams: Redskins punter Ryan Plackemeier was horrible and kept giving Browns good field position with bad kicks. Even though Phil Dawson's 54-yard field goal to tie faded wide right, Browns earned slight edge on 17-yard pun return by Josh Cribbs and 43-yard kickoff return by Gerard Lawson. EDGE: Browns.

First of all, that was dealt plainly. Quite straightforward.
Second, the kicks might have been short, but at least they were returnable.

Please, just always punt it out of bounds. You can't ask the D to have possessions starting in our territory all day and still pitch a shutout.

Posted by: ArtMonkToTheSticks | October 20, 2008 6:15 PM | Report abuse

Am I the only one who feels like this is a mistake, i think Zorn should have given him more of a chance. injury settlement? yeah right!I mean six weeks, you've got a wideout who can't get on the field yeah, yeah i know there's a big difference between a punter and wide reciever but damn give the kid a chance, mark my words he will be a pro bowler by next season and no i'm not crazy!!!!.

Posted by: dargregmag | October 20, 2008 6:22 PM | Report abuse

Things in life are going well when all we have to talk about is the punter. I guess he really created some animosity in the locker room if the Skins didn't IR him and try him again next year since he was still under contract for the minimum.

well i know everyone hated brooks but im not all that stoked on plackemeyer yet...

i thought brooks had some potential...he could kick the long ball for sure...wasnt that bad inside the 20...obviously inconsistency killed him...

i certainly wouldnt blame the rams game on him...sure his shank was a killer but so many other bad plays were worse...

plackmeyer looks pretty good inside the 20 with that aussie kick but all he is shown me is were gonna get about 40 yards when we need a boomer...

i probably woulda givent the kid till the bye week before i pulled the plug...unless it got worse...

but if plackmeyer can start booming them when we are deep on our side...then there certainly isnt any argument...

"It felt great with the snapper," Plackemeier said. "I haven't had a snapper like that in a while. We went through three different ones in Seattle. So having Ethan and his reliability is awesome, getting comfortable with him.

I think I need to figure out how to long snap. I mean, what if something happened to E. Albright? Who'd replace him? I didn't think it was such a scarce commodity.

PORTIS HAS ANOTHER BIG GAME IN REDSKINS' WIN

Clinton Portis gained 175 yards rushing in the Redskins' 14-11 win over the Browns. It was the fourth consecutive game in which Portis rushed for at least 120 yards, and this is the second time Portis has recorded a four-game streak of that type. The only other players with two streaks of four or more games of 120 yards rushing in their career were Jim Brown and O.J. Simpson.

Posted by: kost52 | October 20, 2008 8:56 PM | Report abuse

ESPN's Scouts Inc Review of the game-

Redskins 14, Browns 11
Washington
1. The Redskins leaned heavily on RB Clinton Portis early, but the Browns were able to keep Portis in check despite his hard running. That style paid off by the time the first half was ending, though, as he was able to turn what should have been three- and four-yard runs into six- and seven-yard gains as Portis read his blocks well, kept his pad level low and fell forward on contact. Portis and his linemen owned the day, and allowed Washington to grind out a tough victory.
2. Washington CB Carlos Rogers is playing at an extremely high level and finally living up to the hype of being a first-round draft pick. He is extremely aggressive both as a tackler and in run support, and the hit he put on Cleveland's Josh Cribbs in the flat was one that few corners can inflict. He re-routes wideouts well, has gotten better with his hand use, and his overall technique is finally catching up with his immense physical tools. He and the rest of the Washington cover men blanketed the Cleveland receivers all afternoon.

Cleveland
1. Browns QB Derek Anderson was 3-of-14 for 17 yards in the first half, then he started pressing and things got worse. Anderson's accuracy was abysmal as he missed on bubble screens, dump-off passes and many other short throws. He put far too much heat on short throws and not enough air under deep passes. Anderson can't elude the rush and panics when the play breaks down, leading to up-and-down consistency that clearly frustrated his teammates today. With better quarterback play, Cleveland probably wins this game.
2. Washington QB Jason Campbell has been a quick study in the Redskins' new offense, but the Browns failed to make him uncomfortable despite the fact that Washington did not score a single point in the first half. Cleveland ROLB Kamerion Wimbley had the look of an elite pass-rusher in his rookie season but his game hasn't improved since then, especially considering what he could bring to the table with his combination of quickness, flexibility and pure speed off the edge. The Browns still very much need to find a playmaking pass rusher, and Wimbley isn't disruptive enough to fit the bill unless there is an equally talented linebacker on the other side to draw the attention of the opposing offense.

Jim Zorn just got three former Seahawks on his roster. My own guess is that those were probably his picks, not Vinnie's.

Zorn has never had anything but praise for the front office and said that he and his staff had complete control of the roster decisions on the final cutdowns.

Well at the end of the 1998 season, I was very upset we did not re-sign Trent Green.
He had a very good 98, taking over for Gus who was horrible that season.

Then we spent top draft choices for Brad Johnson and he had a good 99 and we made the playoffs the only post Gibbs 1.0 season 93-2003

It does appear we are in a good position w/ JC and perhaps Colt will develop as well for the future.

So, let's talk a moment about punter strategery. By waiving Brooks, rather than IR, you have the chance to bring him back anytime if (for example) the Plack Attack doesn't work out.
By coming to a settlement, you give him enough spending money to stick around here -- can he rehab at Redskins Park?? -- and, if nothing else, get healthy and let him challenge for the job next year.
There's a chance that someone else might pick him up, if a 32-yard shanker is what you need in a punter...

Man, I don't know how anyone can knock Champ. Not a beast? You must not be a wide receiver.

That was a trade that benefitted both teams but I will never understand that second round pick. It turned out that the pick was Tatum Bell, who's now out of football. Bell was such a fumble machine that the Oakland Raiders named their fumble recovery drill "The Tatum Bell."

Usually, when you describe someone as "carrying Rudi Johnson's luggage", you'd be referring to a blocking FB leading the way. In Tatum Bell's case, it means something slightly different.

Posted by: chrislarry | October 20, 2008 10:13 PM | Report abuse

from last entry:

I'm with sween - Carter beasted out yesterday. Evans played well too, as did Kedric and Corny, who was apprently hurting pretty badly. Our line may not be getting lots of (or any...) sacks, but they do cause pressure. And what does that say about our LB's and DB's?? Rheotrical question of course- if they play the 2nd half of the season close to this level, and we don't get at least 3 Pro Bowl selections from the back 7, it's a crime. If J Taylor can get 100% and give us 5-6 sacks in the 2nd half, this could be a scary good D

JC is the man. Plain and simple. I've said it before and will say it every time he's compared to the rest of the NFC East and/or criticized - wouldn't trade him for ANY of those guys, even (especially) Romo. He's the youngest, the biggest, the best athlete, maybe the strongest arm and seems to have the best demeanor. Oh, and did we mention no picks in 2,000,000 throws???

SICWIDIT'S POLL-O-THE WEEK!

1) Aside from Clinton Portis, which current Skin would be your first pick to start a franchise with?

a) Carlos Rogers
b) Chris Cooley
c) Chris Samuels
d) London Fletcher

If its an expansion franchise that I know I'll need a few years to win -- Laron Landry. If its a team I can win with now, London Fletcher

2) Who do we need more on defense?

a) Sean Springs
b) Chris Horton
c) Cornelius Griffin
d) Laron Landry

Laron, because we have no depth behind him

3) How many curse words did you fire off when that idiot fan's hands blocked the goal line stand?

I'm sure I wasn't the only person who bobbed his head to try to see around that hand

4)The Redkins final record has to be no less than______for us to get into the playoffs.

d) 10-6

5) What's the biggest surprise so far?

d) Jim Zorn

6) Where do you rank Clinton Portis in terms of Greatest Redskin backs of all time?

a) only second to Riggins
b) the greatest
c) behind Bobby Mitchell and Riggins
d) Behind Riggins and Stephen Davis
e) too early to judge

CP is behind Riggins and perhaps Larry Brown (the league MVP in'72). Bobby Mitchell was a WR (flanker) while in DC -- it was a trick question!!!

Posted by: zcezcest1 | October 21, 2008 12:48 AM | Report abuse

Great poll questions. The first one is pretty interesting since you're not asking who the best player is but which one you'd build a franchise around... I think you have to think of a relatively young player, so that would eliminate the guys with a lot of miles (like Chris Samuels or London Fletcher). Of the choices you give, that would leave Carlos Rogers, but I'd go with Jason Campbell. He's already good enough to lead this team to the playoffs and he's still improving. After him I'd probably lean toward Laron Landry.

Posted by: beatkal | October 21, 2008 1:30 AM | Report abuse

This got me wondering about the last two expansions, the Texans and then the Browns team we just beat (meet the new Browns, same as the old Browns, though nothing like the original Paul Brown Browns)...

As I remember it, the Texans had the expansion draft when they got Tony Boselli thinking they'd have a franchise LT to protect their kid franchise QB, #1 overall David Carr. But Boselli was finished and things did not work out well for Carr or the Texans. As I remember it.

I believe the re-animated Browns franchise was awarded Romeo Crennel and a platter of ham sandwiches.

Not sure where I'm going with this... oh yeah, I think the dude I'd pick TODAY to start my franchise among those choices would be LaRon... a phenomenal talent who seems to make everyone in front of him play better.

From PFT,

COWBOYS COORDINATOR STEWART ON THE HOT SEAT
Posted by Michael David Smith on October 20, 2008, 9:26 p.m. EDT
There are indications out of Dallas that Cowboys defensive coordinator Brian Stewart is in danger of being stripped of his responsibilities in calling the defense, or fired outright.

Cowboys coach Wade Phillips said today that he’s going to take it upon himself to make changes on defense.

“I am going to make some changes as far as what we do and how we do it,” Phillips said. “We are looking at personnel, but there are not a whole lot of personnel changes I think we need to make. I think it’s what we do with the personnel and how we are utilizing the players abilities and what they are doing.”

So if changes need to be made and they can’t be made in personnel, will they be made in coaching? Phillips wouldn’t get specific, but he did say of the defensive game plan, “That’s part of what we’re doing. That’s part of what we’re evaluating.”

Cowboys defensive tackle Tank Johnson said he thinks the Cowboys need to run fewer plays out of fewer formations.

“Bottom line is we are trying to do too many things,” Johnson said, per the team’s official web site.

Stewart was an assistant on the Chargers’ staff from 2004 to 2006, when Phillips was San Diego’s defensive coordinator, and Phillips brought him along when he took the Cowboys job in 2007. But giving up 34 points to the Rams might have been enough to make Phillips lose confidence in Stewart.

Lets see it is the D-Cord. fault yeh thats the ticket.

Its not that they have no d-backs, or that they have a 50 year old middle linebacker.

Jerry Jones is a piece of Sh!t, this teams collapse (Which I love by the way) is all his fault, he brings in these non character guys and then gets mad at the coaches when they get suspended.

Jerry Jones you sir are a d!ck head, and I am glad you are in charge of the team I hate the most, keep up the great work.

His name is Durant (first name) Brooks(last name). He will be back with another team. And when he returns he will be a true Southern Gentleman. So when his punts drop within your 10 yard line without a return, he will smile and simply say "thank you". That was the way his Mother raised him. Durant's only problem was that he went to Tech instead of UGA.

A couple of months ago, at the start of the season, we were all "treated" to a JLC whine-fest about how Cerrato lied to the press about interest in acquiring a certain player in a trade (Taylor, I believe). JLC was sputtering his indignation about this incident all over this blog.

Well, check out this part of the latest Peter King article on SI.com:
"Jones stridently said that Wade Phillips' job is not endangered after losing 34-14 to the Rams. But he also told me, just as stridently, that he would not be trading for a wide receiver nine days before he dealt for Williams."

Hmmm, that's interesting! Memo to JLC: this happens ALL THE TIME IN THE NFL. Grow up, grow a pair, and just write about the game.
