Punter Situation Remains in Flux
The Redskins took the practice field this afternoon and began installing the gameplan for the Kansas City Chiefs. What they aren't sure about right now is just who will perform punting duties for them this Sunday.
As Hunter Smith recovers from a groin injury suffered Oct. 4 against Tampa Bay, the Redskins on Monday released Glenn Pakulak, their punter for last Sunday's loss to the Panthers. But this morning, they re-signed Pakulak to the practice squad, which means if Smith still isn't healthy enough to play, Pakulak will be ready to go against the Chiefs.
Smith said today that he's feeling better butĀ is stillĀ "day to day."
"We're just going to see how it is at the end of the week... I think we're making significant progress," he said. "I don't know if we're going to be ready to play or not."
With his status uncertain, Smith did not punt a single ball last week. He said he thinks he'll be able to punt on Friday in practice, just to test out the injury and see if he's ready for the game. In the meantime, he's undergoing various forms of treatment every day at Redskins Park.
"All kinds of things," he said. "You try to do something different every day, just to keep the muscle confused so it heels completely on every level."
Last Sunday was the first regular season game Smith has missed in his 11-year career. He said he's never suffered a similar groin injury.
"These things are tricky," he said. "Sometimes they heel quick, sometimes it takes them a little longer than you'd like."
Pakulak had five punts, averaging 42.4 yards (35.6 net). For comparison's sake, Smith is averaging 43.5 yards this season (40.4 net).

Wow. Mike Sellers used to be one of my favorite Skins.
Now he just sounds like a whiny child.
If he doesn't like the reporters, he should go back to the CFL.

Yeah, how dare he give such an uppity answer when the press graces him with such an insightful question.

How dare you provide such an uppity reply when I graced you with such an insightful post.
Um, for real...one might think that hardest part of the season so far is LOSING GAMES?!?!?
But no, instead one of our team captains is crying himself to sleep at night because of all the mean reporters.

"The Redskins took the practice field this afternoon and began installing the gameplan for the Kansas City Chiefs."
So what's the gameplan when it's 2-3 v. 0-4 or whatever?
Let's see:
a. avoid reporters
b. make sure golf clubs are set and ready to go
c. suggest that the team doesn't have the right pieces when you are a piece that doesn't fit into what the team does
c. fight the alleged star running back
d. bring in a new set of eyes
e. prevent the defensive coordinator from speaking to the press
g. offer a nap and a snack to your $48 million dollar 'big splashy move' defnsive signing
h. prevent the media from using the word 'bust' while discussing the entire 2008 drafted class
i. all of the above
It seems this game plan has been installed already.

"PFT has learned that the Washington Redskins are in negotiations with the Buffalo Bills for a receiver, however it's not the one you're thinking of. Its BOTH of them. Rumor has it that the Redskins and Bills entered into negiations regarding the services of both Roscoe Parrish, and TO, yes, Terrell Owens. The Redskins are said to be parting with back-up defensive lineman Anthony Montgomery, as well as a 2nd round pick in next years draft. Stay tuned"

No. I think any competent #2 QB will do until we build up our O-LINE and fill some holes...JC has crappy career numbers.. What have you been watching??
Posted by: scottmando | October 14, 2009 3:44 PM | Report abuse
JC is on a crappy team. Go back and look at Orton's career numbers. We have a broken down over the hill bad offensive line, broken down over the hill bad running back, and bad play caller. Those all need fixed before we fix our mediocre QB. We're not saying he's good. We just saying you don't bother clipping your hangnail when you've been shot 6 times. There's more important matters to deal with.

4-12/cL, OK, agree to disagree. I just figured that players get drafted/make rosters/get paid based on athletic ability and the risks of life-shortening, brain threatening injuries ... but if you guys want to add "communication skills" to that job requirement, whateves. Skins do so well at PR as it is, its probably a man standing up for being a man that is bringing down this team's public image.
I'm just saying that Mr. Svrugla and Mr. Tenorio were peeved by Sellers' response, hence the choice quote caption. No one likes to be called "You people."

Soup's been sacked 13 times in 2009; 16h in pass rating. Rivers sacked 11 times. Rogers 20. Big Ben 13. Farve 11. All are rated higher. It's not the sacks, it's Soups inability read a D that is the difference between he and the others. That is why he'll be a career backup.

I don't really disagree sweeny, but I think their is another rung of context that is the media landscape/public interest that drives the economic model that the NFL thrives in dictates the media engagement. If I can dare look beyond Sunday's internecine exercise in futility among the native American tribes, I'm wondering if the iggles GM signs Pakulak first light on Monday -- and keep him on an 8 day contract. It's not that da phillies need a punter, mind you, it's just that the dumbskins are so damn stupid, they keep releasing and resigning him -- before they ever know whether they have anyone else ready to play the position. Same goes, I guess, for anyone whose ever put their fingers in the dirt along O-line. Yo Vinny, you dumb fork!

If he ain't good then why not get something for him before he walks out the door and you get nothing?? Just trying to be smart is all. We could keep him but he will want starter money he ain't worth it so take a back up, maybe drop off in QB production a little ( if thats possible) and use the pick for OL help

Does the game plan include not scoring 20 points and getting beat by a winless team? I don't think they need to practice that anymore.

There is no reason to trade anyone now unless the deal is too good to pass up. I believe if next year is uncapped, which it is looking like it will be both Campbell and Rogers will be restricted free agents which means that we have the option to match their best offer and if we choose not to match we get draft picks. I do not think that the draft pikcs are awarded until the next draft in the same draft year as the signing though. Does anyone no what the rules are on restricted free agents?
